Barack Obama likes mint chocolate chip.
He considers Bono "a good friend.''
Favorite reading? The books he reads with his young daughters. Like Harry Potter. And what do Obama's daughters, Malia and Sasha, make of Britney Spears? "They're pretty down on Britney and Paris and all of that,'' Obama says. They like Hannah Montana and Beyonce.
This and more is revealed in this week's issue of Us Weekly -- though Obama dodges the "boxers or briefs" question -- in editions that go on sale Friday, the one with Jennifer Anniston on the cover, featuring an article asking the question: "Barack Obama, is he really just like Us?'' How familiar is Obama with the magazine? "My wife reads it,'' he told Us Weekly. The two keep in touch with computers and web-cams while the candidate is on the road, and he phones home every night.
The spread inside features photographs of Obama as a child -- riding a tricycle and sitting on his mother's lap in Hawaii. It spictures him in "that '70s style,'' with wide-collared "disco duds'' -- noting that his modest-sized hair was "about as big as the Afro ever got. ''
"I think I'm pretty cool,'' Obama says. "I could embarrass my girls, but I choose not to.''
His wife, Michelle, likes Stevie Wonder. She accompanied him on to the stage at a recent rally at UCLA, and Mr. Morris fell off the steps on his way up. "'This is your favorite performer,' Obama told his wife, "and you push him off the stage?' Fortunately, he was OK.''
In his spare time? The sports pages. Checks up on the White Sox and Bulls.
His wife likes Sudoku.
And, how about it, boxers or briefs?
"I don't answer those humiliating questions,'' Obama told the magazine. "But whichever one it is, I look good in 'em.''
And, the article concludes, "He really is just like us.''

Comments
You mean he was stood up by Angelina, too? Obama follows the sad trail of democrats who give the same amount of time to the national press as they do to "Entertainment Tonight."
Obama doesn't really "answer" any question whether it's embarassing or not. He just spouts something vague about change or hope and moves on to the next Swamp/Us Weekly bootlicking session.

O! He's a media creation! I'm shocked. Not. And by the same magazine that has not gotten over the retarded Jeniffer/ Angelina battle. We're supposed to look away to more important issues, like Dar fur and Iraq, not Paris Hilton, he said at a graduation ceremony. Here he is in the biggest exporter of celebrity nonsense. Talking about nonsense. I guess his campaign thought this would be a great way to see "he's like us." They did so by selling out, giving an interview, at this crucial point in the election to "Spencer Pratt denies wanting calf implants." I personally find this lame.

The nations Young people are very excited and they are voting for Senator Obama in record numbers because they don't want to spend the next 100 years in John McCain/Bush's war on Iraq.
I dare the Wingnuts to underestimate this...

Think everyone should realize that Obama is copying all of Hillary CLinton's work and everything she stands for. How many times does he gracefully give her credit for his taking all her ideas and putting his name of them? How many times have you heard him say, I agree, same ideas/he is using all Hillary's hard work and at the same time, hiding the truth about his religious beliefs and fooling a lot of people. ?We could all pay deeply if our young voters don't wake up.

It scares the heck out of me that our young people are voting for trend over substance. I asked my daughter why she was voting for Barack Obama and she said "He's like totally the young people's candidate! Hillary is too shrill, I like the way Obama talks!"
I just hope if he's the nominee he gets enough "old people" behind him who know something about how the world and the economy work.

You can keep the young people. I'll take the AARP crowd and our 71-year-old candidate any day. You know about people in AARP, right? You know that they consistently vote, right?
Young people, like "Obama girl" can't be bothered to actually vote or even be registered to vote in the state they live in in the first place.

The democrats came to the polls in the primaries by margins of 2-to-1 to the republicans in 1984 and 2000, too. We know how those elections turned out. I'd love a repeat of either of those elections.

Barack is a man raised by a single parent for most of his childhood, who was helped by her parents. He didn't know what he wanted to do when he grew up, was an above average college student, who got inspired and went to a better school. He then went to work as a community worker, working for the poor. After several years he went to law school (umm Harvard, magna cum laude) and was the president of the Harvard Law Review. He then came back to Chicago, as a civil rights attorney, and started teaching at the University of Chicago. He ran and won a seat in the State Senate, served there from 1996 to 2004, while continuing to practice law and lecture. Then he gave THE speech, won the US Senate seat, and ran for President.
He's got a wife and kids who seemingly love him. He's smart, articulate, spent most of his adult life fighting for the rights of the poor and under-privleged.
So, nope, he's not like most of us, but I believe he actually cares about people. He's not a media creation, though I can understand why people think that. In a world where there are so many cynical people, here you have somebody who actually believes we can be better than we are today.

Between Sweet of the Suntimes and you with Obama Mania; I'm getting sick of hearing so many articles. Question: Why do you only limit your articles with the most ridiculous/mundane issues on the Senator. You never get serious about what he says about a issue; rather, is is always tabloid nonsense-as this is. What Obama is Like? That is stupid.

I think the quote from Michelle Obama is emblematic of how he and his campaign sees his messianic- grandiose perception of him:
" The question is not whether Obama is ready (for presidency), the question is, are you ready for Obama"
I am not into hero worship, that some of our culturally revered press and luminaries are, so this comment is distasteful to me.
Is he going to be better than Bush?
They share a common denominator: INEXPERIENCE!
Bush's inexperience + mind bogling ineptness with words; Obama's gift: INEXPERIENCE and newly packaged, plagiarized "just words" oratory+ Chicago style politics.
RESULT: CALAMITOUS!
AMERICA WAKE UP!

While younger voters may not be familiar with all of the issues involved in the presidential race, that is no reason to imply they are illiterate and/or indifferent. Perhaps the older voters should realize that consistently voting for candidates based purely on their party affilliations is also not taking into consideration the individual candidate's policies or stance on the issues. The youth of America see hope and change in Obama and while they may not be able to cite verbatim, his stance on every issue, the fact that they are motivated to vote and discuss the upcoming election is very encouraging for the future of our country. I would rather a young person vote based on their "gut" feeling for a candidate than squander their right to vote because they feel that one candidate is the same as the other and it doesn't really matter anyway...

Just Steve, you forgot the part about where he "did some blow" because his gym teacher was mean to him at his expensive private school. That was the best part of the book, and, yes, I did read it. I guess, in that respect, he is like Hollywood although I would never presume to say "us.'

John e., you're response is more wacky than usual. No republicans were predicting a Hillary win in Iowa. Hillary barely even campaigned there compared with New Hampshire. What "happened" in Iowa? A candidate who was polling ahead won. No big shock there.
Besides, as members of the GOP we really don't care what happens in your primaries. We had a field of 6 dozen good candidates of our own to pick from. Believe it or not the world does not revolve around you and St. Barack.

Is he like us? Do we really want a leader that's just like us? Focusing on the petty, everyday things, struggling to get through a day at the office, going home to pay the bills, making tuna casserole for dinner? I don't think so. However, for a man that has lived on three continents, been educated in some of the most prestigeous institutions, has movie star "friends", and millions of dollars to his name, he is the most like me than the other candidates. I want a president that understands my needs and values my opinions, but at the end of the day I don't want a president that's 'just like me' - or I'd run for office myself.

Jeremy, no one's saying that the older generation hasn't had their say, but if young people are really serious about electing Obama or ANYONE president then they need to get to the polls and they're supposed game-changing votes in 2004 weren't enough.
The democrats did this exact same type of celebrity "journalism" to excite them, too. Lenny Kravitz, Sean Combs and the rest of the Hollywood ilk told young people all year to "vote or die."
Here's a USA Today on their efforts: http://www.usatoday.com/news/politicselections/nation/president/2004-08-19-cover-youth-vote_x.htm
Now we're seeing the same stories about how young people are more politically active than ever except Obama's attached to them and not Kerry.
Here's a story on how they voted in '04: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/11/20/politics/main656805.shtml
They'll have to do better than that if they want to compete with AARP, that's all.

Obama is a product of the media age. He is a man of "show" not substance. He talks about change but what is he going to change and how?
I guess we'll learn when Obama and McCain debate this fall. In the end I'm betting on McCain. He survived years in a Vietnamese prison camp. Compared to that experience, this election ought to be a piece of cake. McCain is your run-of-the-mill Republican.
The winner of this election will be the one who can get out the vote. Will young people lose interest in the election by November? Only time will tell.
Posted by: Gina L | February 27, 2008 5:28 PM
No, Barack H. (Middle name HE'S allowed to say, but we aren't) Obama ISN'T just like us. The media (so far) treats him like he walks on water. And that is the difference between Obama and other politicians.
Want a specific example, right on this "Swamp" webpage? If you're reading this, hit "page up" a couple times and look at the right side of the screen, where it has candidate's photos. Clinton II and McCain have one photo gallery. Barack the New Messiah has two galleries.

He's not like me. He went to Harvard, which is much more prestigious than the current institution I attend. He's lived all over the world. He's traveled everywhere.
Do an article on McCain being like Us. Oh wait, you can't. He fought in one of the most brutal wars and endured how many years of torture.
It makes me sick when Obama is all over the media. He's not the second coming of Christ. He's not Captain Planet. I've come to the conclusion that, more or less, all he can do is speak very well.

Obama did not come from a privileged background but comes to us as a Harvard grad with friends like Oprah Winfrey. It constantly cracks me up that he plays the race card when he hasn't had anything common with black americans, ever. He is half white, was raised by a white mother and white grandparents, yet he has the nerve to portray himself as the black candidate. He is not the middle class or common folk candidate either; he lives in a million dollar house, hasn't had to struggle for a long, long time and is far removed from the problems of the average person. He is packaged and is doing his best to stay away from anything of substance. It may be slick and the more you fool the average American, the more they love it; but come Jan 20 of next year, I would rather have someone who has put themselves on the line for who and what they are, and that adds up either to Hillary or John McCain. Sorry, Barak, you are a phony, or, at the very least, you have no record or real experience to hold one of the most difficult jobs in the world.

So tired of Obama being characterized as all talk. With the internet there is so much info available and too many choose to go with just one source- the mainstream media. I am a Republican who after much reading and discernment has decided to vote for the real deal---Obama. Here is an article written about him from 1995. It shows he is definitely not just a man of words. http://www.chicagoreader.com/obama/951208/

My favorite quote from o'bammy is:
"We must be the change we wish to see."
Very moving, very inspirational.
Oooops! It was Mahatma Ghandi that said it. o'bammy just claimed it to be his.

Don't let the know-nothing Republicans scare you, Jeremy, they're full of crap.
It has really been bothering me - the charges from the warmongering John McCain Republicans that Obama is all talk and no action. Those of us who support him and have reviewed his record know there is no basis to this charge, but just to make sure, I went to the Congressional Record (www.thomas.gov) and did a search for bills sponsored or co-sponsored by Senator Obama in his three short years in the US Senate. I searched the 109th and 110th Congresses which cover the years 2005-2007.
In a nut shell I found:
Senator Obama has sponsored or co-sponsored 570 bills in the 109th and 110th Congress.
Senator Obama has sponsored or co-sponsored 15 bills that have become LAW since he joined the Senate in 2005.
Senator Obama has also introduced amendments to 50 bills, of which 16 were adopted by the Senate.
His record is in fact quite impressive for a junior Senator from Illinois.
Below I summarize Senator Obama's legislative record in the US Senate.
First I list the bills he sponsored that have become law.
Next I summarize the bills that he has sponsored or cosponsored since he became a US Senator in 2005.
I have only included major pieces of legislation and have not summarized continuing resolutions or naming post offices, for example.
His record suggests several priorities and the bills he supports address many of our most pressing problems.
Most of his legislative effort has been in the area of Energy Efficiency and Climate Change (25 bills), health care (21 bills) and public health (20 bills), consumer protection/labor (14 bills), the needs of Veterans and the Armed Forces (13 bills), Congressional Ethics and Accountability (12 bills), Foreign Policy (10 bills) Voting and Elections (9 bills), Education (7 bills), Hurricane Katrina Relief (6), the Environment (5 bills), Homeland Security (4 bills), and discrimination (4 bills).
Of the 15 bills Senator Obama sponsored or co-sponsored in 2005-7 that became law:
Two addressed foreign policy:
Promote relief, security and democracy in the Congo (2125)
Develop democratic institutions in areas under Palestinian control (2370).

Next time some dumb Republican asks you "where's the beef" in Senator Obama's Senate record, please feel free to send this to them and make sure you remind them that their candidate (McCain) is a one issue candidate (war) and he's wrong on that too.

My vote breakdown: Senator Obama for student council president because he is dreamy, smart and the most popular guy in school who knows how to says the coolest things! Senator Clinton for president of the United States because she is smart, articulate fair, compassionate and tough...and she has 15 more years of real life experiences. Senator McCain for television spokesman for Erectile Dysfunction and laxative products because his age renders him incapable of doing anything without the assistance of geriatric pharmaceuticals.
Posted by: Jeff | February 27, 2008 7:27 PM
Can you dumb democrats only come up with John McCain is 77 and old. Well let me tell you something, I bet you men are younger, but have A fat old ugly wife at home that your miserable with and have to sleep next to every night.
John McCain isn't doing so bad at 77 with a HOT wife named Cindy.
Posted by: Diane | February 27, 2008 06:28 PM
Which wife would that be, #1 or #2?
It's so hard to keep up with these "family values Reublicans" and their lies.

John Everdumb: Historically the youth doesn't show up on election day, a trend that has been constantly repeated on general election days. Your an amateur "singer" for the DNC, you have a ways to go junior.

Donny Osmond,
Why am I not surprised that you aren't aware of what's going on.
That's ok Donny, the Obama Hurricane is going to be smacking you in the face any time now....I predict it will be coming right at you this Nov, at which time we can expect not to hear anymore Republican cheerleading from your piehole.

Yeah, Diane. Let's put McCain's wife on the ballot. I'll toss my vote in as soon as I see the woman blink. Didn't she once play guitar in the "Addicted to Love" video? Sounds like Diane's got a crush.

Once again, everyone makes an assumption based on the fact that a gossip rag that Obama's some media package in a canidate. Hello, he's a Senator from Illinois people, I don't think he'd be holding the position if he wasn't capable. Obama is young, hip, and appeals to a young, hip audience that reads US. It doesn't mean every article in there is The New York Times equivalent, but give em credit for at least trying to publish something moderately legitimate.

I like Obama. I won't vote for him, but he seems like a nice guy. I think that's more than I could manage to say for Bill Clinton, even.
You have to wonder, though, what gives these media darlings their special glow for average voters. This guy, John E., for example, seems to have a real crush on Obama, the "hurricane."

To this lady, Audrey, who acts like she is trying to set everybody straight with the laundry list of Obama bills, your information appears to be misleading.
I found contradicting information about his record on govtrack.us. It characterizes Obama's legislative success as "poor" to "average". His voting history is considered "Exceedingly Poor relative to peers".
What you are trying to do, Audrey, is mislead people with unclear statistical data and a barrage of information that cannot be interpreted objectively.
Why don't you considered the following information before you carry on with your unbridled fanaticism?:
Bill Sponsorship & Cosponsorship
Statistics: Barack Obama has sponsored 129 bills since Jan 4, 2005, of which 120 haven't made it out of committee (Poor) and 1 were successfully enacted (Average, relative to peers). Obama has co-sponsored 548 bills during the same time period (Average, relative to peers).
Voting History
Statistic: Barack Obama missed 193 of 1113 votes (17%) since Jan 6, 2005 (Exceedingly Poor relative to peers).

Raving Wingnut,
Voting History Statistic:
John McCain missed 65% of the votes in Congress last year (2007) while he was pretending to represent Arizona...this was second only to Sen Tim Johnson who was recovering from brain surgery...

BING BADA BING BABY! BING BADA BING!
He also is broke and lonely! His feet stinks and he doesn't LOVE JESUS!
THAT IS AN ABSENTEE SENATOR, BOTTOM LINE!
Just look at MA BELL AKA QWEST Communications, at the foot of the "DEVIL" begging to let "MA BELL OUT" to communicate on a "LEGAL WAYS AND MEANS OF DOING BUSINESS IN AMERICA."
Life appears to be simply "PROVISIONAL" TO MR. MCCAIN. A, LETS NOT FORGET (LOBBYIST IN ALL)!

O! He's a media creation! I'm shocked. Not. And by the same magazine that has not gotten over the retarded Jeniffer/ Angelina battle.
Posted by: hmmmm | February 27, 2008 2:49 PM
I find your comment lame and tiresome. They're having some fun. Lighten the f%ck up. I've hung out a bit with both Obama and Hillary and they are both engaging friendly people. PEOPLE!!! Get it.

"Obama is a product of the media age. He is a man of "show" not substance. He talks about change but what is he going to change and how?"
Well Gina L you've certainly had enough time and debate including last night to have figured that one out. Due Diligence (DD)
1. An investigation or audit of a potential candidate. Due diligence serves to confirm all material facts in regards to the candidate.
2. Generally, due diligence refers to the care a reasonable person should take before deciding on a candidate or political party. In this case voting for a president.
"The winner of this election will be the one who can get out the vote. Will young people lose interest in the election by November? Only time will tell."
Posted by: Gina L | February 27, 2008 5:28 PM
I'm 46 years old Gina. I think I represent a large swath of Obama's support. After all those aren't doghnuts and pizza he's using to buy that TV ad time. Seems to me it your arguement against Mr Obama that lacks substance. But hey, nothing personal. I'm just getting real tired of this now completely debunked arguement that Barack Obama is incapable of running for president, let alone his ability to perform the duties required as president once he is elected, which he almost surely will be. I suggest you get up to speed on WHAT'S REALLY GOING ON.
We are about to undergo a major paradigm shift in the political landscape of both the USA and with regard to Americas standing on the world stage. I think your should look beyond a fun little tidbit and realize how important a moment this is. We are about to regain our momentum worldwide.
Fall in or fall behind. The choice is yours.
Obama for president 2008.
