GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Some of the Hillary people have been spinning a possible third-place finish in South Carolina for about a week now -- which seemed totally preposterous until John Edwards began surging here.
"It's certainly not out of the realm of possibility," said one major donor. Of course all this could be part of the usual lowering expectations thing.
Now comes a Zogby/Reuters/C-Span poll showing Obama 39, Clinton 24, Edwards 19.

Comments
Oh, I do hope this is so as John Edwards is the candidate we most need to stand up for us all. That is true not only in the US, but in the world. Edwards has the best policies as to: economic stimulous; alternative energy; health care; housing; education and National Security, to name a few. If in doubt go to: http://johnedwards.com/ and see for yourself. Don´t count on the media to let you in on the secret.

I can tell you that myself, some friends and family have gotten turned off by the Clinton's behaviour to do anything to win and we will not vote for her if she gets the Democratic nomimnee. Their behavior and distortions like at Meet the Press in which Hilalry said: "Sen. Obama's chief strategist accuses me of playing a role in Benazir Bhutto's assassination.'' When in actuality David Axelrod never made such an accusation. He said former Prime Minister Bhutto's death will ''call into issue the judgment'' of ''taking the eye off the ball and making the wrong judgment in going into Iraq.'' and their recent attempt in voter suppresion in Nevada has shown a lot of people another side to them we did not know existed and it does not look pretty. They have divided the paty and it is a deep division. They seem more like Karl-Rove Republicans than Democrats and it is a shame to see their moral demise!

Perfectly likely, and I hope it happens. It's about time Democratic voters refuse to support anyone campaigning in the Lee Atwater-Karl Rove school of politics.
Last August the Washington Post reported on the admiration the Clintons and campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle had for Rove, and their intention to follow his game plan:

To clarify the reason why this is important:
The Lee Atwater-Karl Rove school of politics can win an election but lose a democracy. A democracy is based on an informed public, an independent press, and free speech. Their campaign techniques effectively draw a line through all those.
Stop the madness!

Hold your breath because she might still cry her way to a win just as she did in NH.

Bottom Line:
Like all of you. I know that health care is the most critical, and important issue facing the American people. Now, and in the coming elections. And like the vast majority of the American people, I want HR 676 (Medicare For All) passed into law NOW! "Single payer, Tax Supported, Not For Profit, True Universal Health Care" free for all as a right. Like every other developed country in the world has. See: http://www.house.gov/conyers/news_hr676.htm
“HR 676:
For church goers: less money to insur. companies and more to the church- lots more.
Srs on Medicare: save way over $100/wk. Because no more medigap, long term care & dental insur. needed. No more drug bills.”
But if we the American people fail to bring enough pressure on our current politicians to get HR 676 passed into law before the elections. We will have to identify, and replace all the politicians standing in the way of passage of HR 676. And, I think the best first place to start is with the politicians that blocked the bipartisan SCHIP bills for the kids. Passed by congress twice.
But what about the President. It was Bush after all that blocked the bipartisan SCHIP bill passed by congress to assure more health coverage for Americas kids. So which of the presidential hopefuls do I think will be most supportive of implementing the demand of the majority of the American people to have HR 676 (Medicare For All) passed into law immediately!
We have some very fine presidential candidates who would make good presidents. But none of the top Presidential candidates directly support HR 676, the only true Universal Health Care plan. So I am supporting Hillary Clinton. She is the only top candidate that has ever actually fought for universal health care before.
I have enormous admiration, and respect for Hillary Clinton. She fought a pitched battle against overwhelming odds back in 1993. To prevent this disastrous health care crisis that is now devastating the American people, and America. She fought so hard for the American people that she risk almost completely destroying her husbands presidency. I haven't forgotten her heroic effort. If any Presidential hopeful for universal health care deserves my support, it's her.
Also, if we the American people fail to bring enough pressure on our government to give us HR 676 which we all so desperately need NOW! Then we will need the most skilled politician we can get on our side to broker the best health care plan for the American people that we can get. Though it will be less than we need, and less than we deserve. The politician I think to best do this is Hillary Clinton. The Clinton's are probably the most skilled politicians in American history.
The insurance industry, and medical industry that has been ripping you off, and killing you has given Hillary Clinton so much money because they fear her. They have also given Barack Obama so much money because they fear Hillary Clinton. They think they can manipulate Barack Obama against the best interest of the American people better than they can manipulate Hillary Clinton. There is no race issue with Hillary Clinton. The Clinton's are the poster family for how African Americans want white people to be towards African Americans.
As always, African Americans are suffering, and dieing in this health care crisis at a much higher rate than any other group in America. The last time there was any significant drop in the African American death rate was when Bill Clinton was president.
My fellow Americans, you are dieing needlessly at an astounding rate. In higher numbers than any other people in the developed world. Rich, and poor a like. Insured, and uninsured. Men, women, children, and babies. And we the American people must stop it. And fix it NOW! Keep Fighting!!! Never! give up hope. There are millions of lives at stake. Bless you all... You are doing great!

Obamas has been crying since he lost every primary since Iowa, where 17yr olds (who can’t vote in general election) and Bill Richardson supporters put him over the top, otherwise he would have lost there too. The media has told the country that SC is a racist black only vote. So why would anyone other than the only 1/2 black candidate stay there. John Edwards is wasting his time in SC per the media. I don't think that ALL SC voters are as racist and naive as the media wants to portray them. It’s an attempt to help Obama because his camp has made fools of the media. It took voters and an ex-president to bring his terrible senate record, bush/Chaney backing, republican loving, lack of good judgment and inexperience out in the open when the media tried to hide it. Frankly we are tired of obama crying! If he crashes so quickly because he’s getting caught with corrupt campaigning funds with Rezko etc… what would he do when foreign leaders come at him? Run crying too, or call Oprah for help? …Just what we cannot afford to take a chance on. Giving pre-written church speeches does not make a President. And having his wife, Michelle Obama stumping throwing out racial comments is disgusting! No one sees her as first lady material; we don’t even see her as a lady! No one was crying when obama camp was attacking Hillary? And ALL the media treating her unfairly. She has proven that she is a strong leader after all the attacks she has endured and over come. Thank God the voters are smarter than the media and obama give them credit for. DONT WASTE VOTES ON OBAMAS, WE DONT NEED A RACIST IN THE WHITE HOUSE

Well, Hilary will do anything to win nomination. Ultimately it will be the same game we have seen during Bush.
Clinton presidency is riled with lots of disgrace & scandals. Starting from 'White water scandals' from Arkansas till getting service from that woman, Monica.
For last 20 years, America is ruled by two families. Lets have a break.
No dynasty, no Clintons, please!

This might not be a lowballing of expectation strategy, this perhaps might be what they wanted, they believed that Obama has more chances of winning the nomination than Edward, that explain why they haven't gone all the way out to attack Edward at the same time they would rather keep Edward in the race so he can help draw some votes off of Obama since they both seem to attract the same "change oriented voters" instead of Clintons "no matter how much you lie I will vote for you" voters.

Hmmm the sentence 'Health care free for all as a right' - couldn't that be a bit misleading - people might actually think their healthcare will be free instead of mandatory insurance deductions from their wages.
It seems that all the candidates have health care plans but I agree with what Obama says that insurance and drug costs need to be negotiated downwards for poorer people to be able to afford it.
The Clinton's have been spinning that race will be a deciding factor for their loss in SC, so as to minimize Obama's win and reinforce the idea of racial polarization - but I think that if those not wanting to vote for Obama vote for Edwards instead (who has run this race with much more integrity than then Clintons) then they send a clear message to the rest of America that sleazy tactics and dishonesty are rejected by everyone as acceptable politics.
Why would you want to model this election on Rove tactics? I thought the Bush Admin and the way it did things was something that people wanted to move away from - cos look where it has gotten you.
It seems to me that Clinton's have been setting up their projected loss to leverage it in two ways: 1/ black people are voting for Obama so they are being racist - therefore white people should punish them by swinging towards us, and 2/ the media has been disproportionately critical of Hillary and don't believe what they say and you need to vote for us to counter them.
Well, the media wouldn't be critical if they weren't acting slimey. That is a reaction of their own creation - and they deserve it. Secondly, white voters should remember that if they are not an Obama supporter, then if they wanted to polarize against him based on race - well Edwards is the better choice to polarize too, because hes run a race with more integrity.

In sum - send a message to the Clinton's that their deceitfulness and underhanded tactics are not acceptable behavior - they need to focus on their message and less on attacking Obama - Obama needs to be able to focus on his message, as does Edwards - and the Clinton campaigners in any given state would do well to remember to play fair, play by the rules, don't fix things to disadvantage voters in order to benefit your candidate. Particularly with the later, if you can't do that - you should consider not calling yourselves the Democratic party - because you are undermining democracy.
Keep it clean. If the Reps are going to come at people with the Rove handbook in the presidential election - well fine - let the candidate chosen deal with that - don't try and use that as an excuse to kneecap your own party members.

As a Democrat I've been quite disturbed by the media and the two frontrunners turning our nomination process into a devisive race vs. gender war that is tearing our Party apart.
I think we need to drop both these self absorbed candidates who don't seem to care about the damage they are doing to our Party and vote for the candidate we should have been voting for all along.
John Edwards is the best candidate in this race, period.
He has driven the issues in this campaign to the point that both Obama & Hillary are running on a variation of HIS policies. Not only do they copy his policies & ideas but they also copy parts of his stump speech.
In the last three debates the voter focus groups have all selected Edwards as the winner of those debates. Throughout the campaign he has also consistently beaten the Republican candidates in head-to-head matchups by larger margins than either Obama or Hillary.
Knowing all of this, why in the world would we want to vote for Obama or Clinton? The longer this campaign goes on the more they prove to us that they are both lousy candidates who don't deserve our votes.
I think it should be pretty clear to anyone whose been paying attention that the only candidate who deserves our vote on the merits is John Edwards. Now when are we going to do something about it?
Posted by: pmorlan | January 24, 2008 6:55 PM
Thank you pmorlan. People there are 3 candidates in the dem. race and only one stands on higher moral ground by not accepting corporate money. Aren't you tired of all the contracts, subsidies, tax breaks and favorable laws going towards big corporations like big oil, war profiteers and contractors, insurance and drug companies, credit card companies, Wal-Mart, Rezco and all the rest? Please read the issues. don't vote on "celebrity status", race, gender, or something else that has nothing to do with issues.
Edwards has comprehensive policies (and has had them long before Hillary and Obama) on economic reform, increased education (which leads to higher wages and lower birth rates), poverty reduction, insurance reform, on ending the Iraq war and on and on. Get out there and READ ISSUES and don't rely on the media or preconceived biases of your own or others. John Edwards can turn this country around, period.

I used to have a lot of respect for the Clintons, but their false, misleading, and manipulative attacks are straight out of Karl Rove's playbook. What's next? Will Clinton bug her own office like Rove did?
I've voted Democratic in every election since I've turned 18, and I planned on voting for whichever Democrat won. However, I don't think I can ever support Bill or Hillary Clinton ever again because their campaign strategy is bad for our democracy, and while I hope I'm wrong, Clinton would get destroyed by McCain in a general election.

TURN THE PAGE ALREADY!!
The Clintons had a chance to make government more ethical. Hillary had an opportunity to reform health care. Bill had an opportunity to catch Bin Laden. He also had an opportunity to end genocide in Rwanda. Well, they were not able to accomplish any of those things while in office.
What they offered to the American people was a balanced budget, scandal, drama and a torn apart democratic party. Then, what have you seen during this entire campaign, the same ‘ol, same ‘ol.
This should be an obvious choice. The DNC and Obama should join forces and take the party and America into the future. I do not want to go backwards.
TURN THE PAGE AMERICA!!!
OBAMA for PRESIDENT 2008!!

Washington Post's Ruth Marcus graded
the candidates on their economic stimulus plans...
Barack Obama: A-minus. I criticized his previous tax plan, but Obama is at the head of the class with an intelligently designed, $120 billion stimulus plan. He would speed a $250 tax credit to most
workers, followed by another $250, triggered automatically, if the economy continues on its sour path.
Obama would direct a similar rebate to low- and middle-income seniors, who are also apt to spend and could get checks quickly. One demerit: Obama omits any increase in food stamp benefits, which Moody's estimates would have the greatest bang for the buck, $1.73 for every dollar spent.
