The Swamp

by Frank James

If you were a Republican watching President Bush's State of the Union speech last night, there's a good chance the feelings in you that Bush evoked could be described as "competent, confident, in control, proud."

Meanwhile, if you were a Democrat, Bush probably conjured up feelings that could best be described as "suspicious" and "skeptical."

How do we know this? HCD Research Inc., a market-research company, tested the president's speech with 602 viewers using a testing method initially created to test the response of consumers to advertising. These were some of the results.

As Glenn Kessler, the head of HCD explains:

The methodology used to measure the emotions of Americans to the 2008 State of the Union Speech was the Ayer Emotion Battery (AEB). The AEB was developed by the former NW Ayer Advertising agency in the 1980s to understand the emotional impact of effective advertising. Ayer validated the elements with a nationally representative sample of advertisements.

The 2008 Speech was tested among 602 Americans between 10:02PM and 11:00 PM EST on January 28, 2008.

The results are fairly much what you'd expect. Still, it's good to see some evidence for those suspicions.

How can you feel proud when the guy you voted for twice is about to leave office with worst ratings than Tricky Dick Nixon?

We really need to split this country in half.

There was no "message of hope" for the shivering CHA residents housed by Barack Obama's friend and financier, Tony Rezko.

If the reaction of the panel Democrats to the SOTU was "suspicious" and "skeptical", then we already know how Frank James reacted to the speech.

Awww,
Look at those crocodile tears and the manufactured outrage "MJ" has managed to put on display. All of the sudden he's showing compassion for poor people. Too bad it's not genuine.

Well, I could've told you that. The radical left hates everything Bush does and the radical right loves him for it.

Here's to hoping the next president can actually change the poison atmosphere in Washington. I don't ever want to see the speaker of the house making snide aside remarks during a SOTU again.

Considering how many times the man has lied to us in the last seven years, who can believe a word he says now? By the way, how's our Mars expedition going?

There was no "message of hope", MJ, for any of U.S. lemmings. That was the message. "Business as usual".

But, in my opinion, MJ, we ain't seen nothing yet. If Barack does not end up our next president, then we all are REALLY going to see the price we pay for immorality in high places, Tony Rezko or no Tony Rezko!

Have you ever noticed that YOU are the only one who is trying to make a big deal of this?

We have....seriously, get a life..

President Bush delivered a superb speech and provided an outline for America that should be the model for every lawmaker in Washington. But it won't be. There will be the usual suspects who place the warped interests of their base of voters above the good of the people. Couldn't help but notice the members of the Supreme Court present for the President's last SOTU. The entire court boycotted Clinton's last one because of his disreputable and disgusting behavior.

So you think its NOT a big deal that the poor and elderly and powerless got screwed, John E? Sorry, most people will disagree with that.

"BUSH FINDS HUMOR IN THE AMERICAN ECONOMY"

HEE-HEE HAH-HAH HEE-HEE-HAH-HAH.

HE DIDN'T MEAN TO LAUGH. HE DIDN'T MEAN TO MAKE THE DEMS LOOK LIKE HE JUST FOOLED A FOOL TWICE. HE DIDN'T CIRCUMVENT THE LAW FOR NOTHING. HE DIDN'T STAND BEFORE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE FOR THE 7TH TIME AND LAUGH FOR NOTHING. HE FINDS IT FUNNY HOW EASY IT IS TO FOOL A FOOL AGAIN, AND AGAIN, AND AGAIN, AND AGAIN.

IT DOESN'T TAKE A BOEHNER TO GET IT STRAIGHT. IT DOESN'T TAKE A DICK TO MAKE IT HAPPEN. IT ONLY TOOK A YOU AND A ME TO ALLOW IT TO HAPPEN.

GO WITH THE WIND AMERICA, GEORGE BUSH READS. SEE SPOT RUN SEE AMERICA RUN WASN'T FOR NOTHING. HIS FABRICATION OF WMD'S. HIS FABRICATION OF "MISSION ACCOMPLISHMENT" WASN'T FOR NOTHING.

IT WAS TO HAVE THE LAST LAUGH LIKE ANY TRUE COMEDIAN EXPECTS AT THE END OF HIS SHOW!

HEE-HEE-HAH-HAH AMERICA, WHO IS GOING TO BANK AND WHO ISN'T NOW.

DOT.COM THAT.

There's a big difference between how we perceive the SOTU speech now as we look around at the train-wreck of a nation Bush has left us, as opposed to 7 years ago.

I didn't vote for Bush, but even I thought he would seek to unite the country after 9/11. Didn't happen. He used the tragedy to consolidate power, marginalize opponents, alienate allies, and sharply divide the country.

This has been the most secretive, most arrogant, and most incompetent administration in our country's short history. Bush's legacy is nothing more then the big pile of crap the neighbors dog just left on my lawn.

Jeffy/Bill preferred the Boss Hog,Denny Hastert.

Denny was to full of himself to make snide remarks. He was dreaming of that road to nowhere, just after buying the property that would make him cash!!!!

Bruce you are without a doubt the biggest bed-wetting baby to ever spew GOP nonsense in The Swamp.

Bush was treat kindly considering his record of destroying the good name of the Unisted States of America. This man is corrupt to the core and will leave office in shame.

When history judges this Bush presidency, all those Republicans who stood and stupidly applauded the bullshit coming from GW will have to explain to their grandchildren why they did so in front of the entire nation. It is stupidity like this that resulted in eight years of this immoral coward's mistakes. Our children, grandchildren, and beyond will pay the price.

Is that how you react when they're being screwed by Republicans like Bush? Or is it more like "We've never been better!" or "Lousy, shiftless good-for-nothings -- they're getting what they deserve"?

What a jerk. George Bush seems like he can't wait to get back to Crawford TX.

America, ever get the feeling you've been ripped off???

Sotu left GOPers proud?

There must be allot of denial in the republican party. Bush was ridiculous.

Ain't it the truth! The scary thing is that the John D's of the world defend the administration.

Watching the SOTU address was painful. Listening to that bum stumble, and stammer his way through it made you long for Bill Clinton. A reckless use of power will be the only legacy this man can hang his hat on. What a loser!

Illogic Man, I WILL defend this administration through and through. Doesn't mean I have had criticisms, but this administration actually cares about people, whereas the previous one only cared about themselves. This administration has taken on challenges, popular or unpopular, in order to do the right thing. Something that cannot be said of the previous administration.
You Loons on the Left will never get that, but that is why you folks are not part of the American mainstream.

John D., Too bad all those "un-popular" decisions and the popular ones, too, have been failures.

One dem has more guts than most repubs have in their entire body. The only repub I'll give some credit to is McCain. Though I disagree with his positions, you have to give him his due for his service and the suffering he endured in Viet Nam. Another unecessary war.

And, by the way, the Iraq war was the popular decision in March '03.

Osama Bin Ladin got just what he wanted. The narcissistic, cowboy president started his war of revenge. You say "Fight them there or fight them here." Why should Bin Ladin care, since we went there. Bush opened the door for AlQaeda in Iraq. And now more lives have been lost than those lost on 9/11. And now Iran is in a much more powerful position in the region.

Unprovoked war + loss of individual liberties + mortgage crisis + brink of recession = WORST PRESIDENT EVER.

"Suspicious" and "skeptical"??

I would add 'disgusted' and 'angry'.

15 minutes into Bush's peevish speech, I switched it off. By that time, I'd had enough of the inappropriate grinning and cocky attitude. In sharp contrast to Obama's inspiration, Bush rushed delivery (did he have a plane to catch?) and testy, chip-on-his-shoulder attitude fills me with rage.

Good riddance.

Syj, get a grip. First of all, no unprovoked war. Let's take WMDs off the table and look back since 1991:
1. Hussein kept violating UN resolutions.
2. Hussein kept violating the agreement to end the Gulf War.
3. Hussein attempted to assassinate a former U.S. president.
4. Hussein supported terrorism, whether it was giving families of Palestinian suicide bombers money or housing Al Qaeda operatives like Al Zarquawi.

If all these aren't true, then why did Clinton repeatedly bomb Iraq throughout the 1990s? Why did Democratic senators such as Tom Daschle, John Kerry, et al sign a letter to Clinton in 1998 saying regime change was necessary in Iraq?
You still have not cited ONE American who has been spied on. Please provide ONE instance of loss of liberties under the Bush administration.
Mortgage crisis? It was Bush's fault that people bought homes they shouldn't? It was Bush's fault that mortgage comnpanies gave out loans they shouldn't? Sorry, does not wash.
Brink of recession? The U.S. has experienced economic growth every year since 2002. Under your reasoning the recession Bill Clinton handed to George Bush in 2000-2001, also makes Clinton a bad president, no??
