President Bush plans to travel to Chicago on Monday to celebrate the anniversary of the signing of the No Child Left Behind Act, his signature education reform and one of the biggest domestic achievements of his first term as president.

The act, which demands annual testing of public schoolchildren and holds them to standards of "adequate yearly progress,'' initially was enacted amid much bipartisan fanfare. The president had pressed for it in his first campaign, decrying the "soft bigotry of low expectations'' that had plagued American public schools, and he won the support of key Democratic leaders, such as Sen. Edward Kennedy, in its passage.

Yet, since his signing of the act six years ago on Monday, it has faced growing criticism from educators complainng that they are forced to teach to tests and from political leaders as well -- complaining that the government never put the money behind the act needed to help schools measure up to its demands. Even among Republican candidates for president now, the president faces calls for the abolishment of the act if the government won't fund it.

The president will make a stop in Chicago, where he also will meet with business leaders, to tout the progress which the act has brought to education, as he views it -- the White House cites gains among students, particularly minority students, in reading and math scores. The White House said today there will be no political events -- such as fundraising -- attached to this Chicago stop and "no new policy'' will be announced on Monday.

Asked why he is visiting Chicago for this event, White House Press Secretary Dana Perino today initially asked: Does the president need a reason to visit Chicago? "Pizza?'' she jested.

But, in a more serous vein, Perino added this: Chicago provides an excellent venue to talk about the importance of the No Child Left Behind law and how students, parents and communities are benefiting from it, as well as a great place to discuss the economy.''

The next day, Bush plans to leave for an eight-day tour of the Middle East -- starting in Israel and carrying him through Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Egypt -- to promote the peace talks between Israeli and Palestinian leaders that were announced at a summit of Middle East leaders in Annapolis in November.

This morning, Bush spoke with Afghan President Hamid Karzai by secure videoconference. "The president will raise with Middle East leaders next week… the importance of supporting Afghanistan,'' Perino said.

Coming for pizza? How much is this trip costing the American tax payer?

Well, after spending 5 trillion we don't have, what's a few more bucks for pizza!

On a more serious note,I would be hesitant to meet with Bush after his admin did nothing to stop the assassination of Bhutto.

Who'll be the next in line???

"Conservatives" my ass!

Perfect timing for his visit - all of us in Chicago already have our shovels out from the recent snowstorm, I guess we can now use them to shovel the crap peddled by this idiot.

I'm no Bush fan, but I don't know what the Bush administration could have done to prevent Bhutto's assassination - any assistance we could have offered would likely have been turned down anyway.

Interesting he comes to a city that to this day is in dire need of education reform to tout his educational "acheivement" as President. NCLB is a joke! Standardized tests don't properly measure intelligence or promote learning. They measure multiple choice abilities and promote 'teaching to the test.'

NCLB is a disaster. The only thing good about NCLB is the name. Period!

I guess they didn't leave a "child" behind when they came to ChiTown otherwise the Decider Guy would have been left in DC.

I suspect W will be hitting the local Chuck E Cheese for some (non-alcoholic) beer and pizza.

Education is one thing but a child's health is another in which he veto funding for healthcare for children. He can take is pizza and go home.

Rich, the Chicago educational system has been a joke and a national embarrassment for decades now. No FEDERAL government can fix the LOCAL school system. The problem is Chicago's and Illinois', and that is where the problem lies anyway. Just like the mass transit mess.

Also, where most states have been flush in recent years with money because of record revenues due to the economy, housing market, etc., Illinois has been in shambles. Whereas many states have been able to GIVE money back to state taxpayers, save hundreds of millions to billions for rainy days, Illinois remains a mess. Why? Because of mismanagement and waste in the most corrupt state in the union.

If the idiot that stole the presidential office wanted his No Child Left Behind Act to work then the money that has been spent on his war should have gone to educating Americas children. Without the money needed to make it work his so called NCLB act is a joke.

NCLB is a great step forward in our nation's education system. The only folks against it are the NEA and many of it's members; public school teachers. Apparently, they don't like being held to high performance standards like the rest of us who work in the real world.

"Teach to the test" is a meaningless slogan from the NEA which they throw out frequently as a NCLB negative put down. What do you mean, tests don't promote learning? LOL Of course they do! Well, they do for those of us who like to pass tests.

If you want to attain any degree of success in this life, in nearly all occupations, you must listen and learn, study, then pass the test. I think it's great kids are learning this in school.

Oh joy, the retard is paying us a visit...lets make sure to roll out the red carpet.

BUTCH AND DALLY THERE'S A PARE.

President idiot is comming to town. I wonder for what? Does he want to destroy chicago up close and personal. It would be nice if his plane went down over daley's house. If there is a god in heaven, make it happen to save us from this small minded man.

The reason that some educators opposed the No Child Left Behind Act is that they object to accountability for product. Prior to the NCLB act, many students were being promoted without a demonstrable grasp of the subject matter to justify such promotion. Even in college, professors fight against measurable accountability. I know of no other profession where there is no performance accountability. The testing incorporated in NCLB accomplishes that. Teaching to tests? You bet. Kudos to President Bush and Senator Ted Kennedy for promoting this advancement for schools. And yes, I am a certified teacher.

Funny... How many children Bush left behind without health insurance?

p please do not leaver bush behind let bush go by to washington

p please do not leaver bush behind let bush go by to washington

Including spouses, my family has several teachers and education administrators who work in 4 different school districts. NOT ONE supports the horror that is No Child Left Behind. It's poorly crafted, sorely underfunded and has done more harm than good. Scrape it - and thank God we have only one more year of the Moron in Chief to bother us.

WHY does this man keep besmirching our city by coming here? Stay away, Bush. You're not wanted - here or anywhere else.

". . .one of the biggest domestic achievements of his first term as president."

Just about says it all.

Of course the Bush supporters would probably point to the tax cuts and ignoring the unpaid bills from this President.

NCLB is a shame before the gods. I am so tired of the games being played with our children. I don't have any but I know many and wish them some recognition in 2008. How many times do we have to say that the children are our future?
I hope there are protests when he arrives in Chicago.

Tony Shumpert sounds like a threatening, pompous, uneducated liberal who among the others commenting should look at their own elected dimwitted govenor here in Illinois who doesn't seem to care about anything or anyone. With all the money that is suppose to go to education, I never see any improvement, maybe this should be looked into....

In all fairness to Dick Vader's young apprentice Bushy, "No Child Left Behind" did accomplish one very important thing. It lined the pockets of his brother, and other Crownies as the standardized tests in question where provided by their company. Yet another fact that Corporately owned media seldom discuss......

Well, the world needs ditch diggers, too.

Stay home Bush, everything you touch turns into garbage! Chicago has enough problems without you. Maybe we should have you travel through the city by bus as punishment for your crimes!

Thanks MC, it's obvious bush can do no wrong in your eye's. Please keep them closed like the rest of the republicans who put him in office to ruin this country, and a few others. That's why we have the first amendment of free speech. I'm sure bush and his followers would like to take that away too. If I'm uneducated, what do you think that makes you? Loyola University would be very upset with you.

If you blame the sad state of education in Illinois on President Bush, you are missing the point.

How about our do-nothing Governor or Democrat controlled General Assembly that wasted over $1 million in a special session that accomplished nothing?

That money could have helped out failing schools.

Does it say anything about the sad state of Chicago schools that to increase turnout on the first day of school kids are offered free tickets to sporting events, and even free rent/mortgage?

When did an education become such a joke that you had to bribe kids and parents to show up to school?

Our state is mismanaged from top to bottom and President Bush has nothing to do with that.

Instead of blaming Bush why don't you people look around you here in Chicago and see the idiot running the Cook County Office plus a whole bunch of other idiots. By the way while you are at it...tell the Governor to grow up and go get a hair cut. Now there is another IDIOT.

After reading the comments in regards to this thread,it is no wonder that Boy George has approval ratings in the mid 20's.

He is well on his way to securing the title of Worst Prez in history.

My apologies to the real Boy George, for mentioning you in respect to the other guy.

Wow! snalg has several family members who are teachers or administrators in 4 different school districts. That would explain the anti NCLB attitude. The law became necessary because of the miserable job of educating our kids that was being done. Oh, and by the way, did you mean "scrape" it or "scrap" it?

Dear Thirtysomething:
President Bushwacker has everything to do with it. He has ruined our country in general..Overall! Not that our Governor does'nt have his faults and has made mistakes, he has done many good things for Illinois and some stupid things..Bushwacker however, has done all bad things and is not welcome here in Illinois.

President Bush is wonderful, and this country is lucky to have him. If one of the appeasing, "let's all be friend's" dems would have been elected into office this country would have been blown up a long time ago. Our pro-active President has scared the living crap out of terrorists, and has kept our country safe. I have much respect for him. Oh, and I'm a teacher, my Aunt's a teacher, and two of my cousin's are teachers, and we think the left behind program is wonderful. Also, for those who want to hate- This country is a cake walk compared to what people in other countries live with. Democrats are so ungrateful, we are a profitable nation, where girls and boys can go to school alike. I can't believe dems who consider themselves "pro-education", object to our President helping countries who are less fortunate or troubled by war and crimes against females. By him helping these countries (in the middle east for example) establish democracies and ultimately peace, an education system will be available to children in war torn countries, that's including youg girls!! Feminists and their dem counterparts forget there are other people in the world- they are too busy splashing furs with red paint, freaking out about who calls who names, and peddling infanticide.

While NCLB is not the answer, the real answer is much harder. Parents have to support education. CPS can educate if only the parents help. Northside and Payton are ranked ahead of New Trier in almost every ranking so it can be done.

Karen -- I don't know what kind of industry you work in where you merely memorize "facts" or "procedures" or whatever, and merely regurgitating the "right answers" on a "test" is an adequate indicator of competence. You must have a stunningly simple job. Me, on the other hand? I have to actually think - analyze and assess - and then based on that, coupled to my education, think up a result. Unfortunately for me, my job requires a bit more than just "a, b, c, d or e" as an answer.

Then again, maybe there's an association between the imposition of NCLB and the rise of college kids who can't even handle the most basic fact of campus life (much less the coursework) without calling mommy and daddy to bail them out of some problem they got into in school. Since they had to think, rather than having a preset list of choices and answers available for them, the little angels were overwhelmed.

"When did an education become such a joke that you had to bribe kids and parents to show up to school?"

No, no, no...it's simply an extension to the basic "deed>reward" system that these simple minded "parents" understand. They don't understand the definition of "personal responsibility."

Unless there is something TANGIBLE in it for them, what's the enticement to speak to their kids' teachers? It's not like the parents really CARE what the teacher has to say. After all, the little apples of their eyes can do absolutely no wrong, whatsoever.

So, yeah, when your kids are "perfect," what's the point?

As for bribing the kids...kids will be kids. I remember as a kid myself having perfect attendance awards, report card gifts, etc. That's what motivates kids...as for applying the same mentality to their obviously emotionally stunted parents...well, I think we're starting to scratch the surface of where the kids problems stem from.

NCLB did "work" for Prez 26%, it made his brother Jeb a very rich man and in the end that's all the Bushies really care about.

I respect your opinion, misguided as it is. We are NOT safer than we were before President Bush started his unnecesary war. In fact terrorism has grown, because now, more countries hate us. Al Qaeda is spread all over Iraq, where it had not been before the war.

If we need to help nations, it should be done through peacful means, such as economic pressure, so that the people of oppressed nations realize what terrible leaders they have and rise up "ON THEIR OWN" to turn the nations into democracies.

If people can find ways to flee their countries and come to America to seek freedom (like everyone else throughtout our countries history, i.e. Irish, Italians, Germans, Polish, etc.) we will welcome them with open arms. But the US cannot be the "police" for the world. We should lead by example of what a nation can be.

President Bush does not have the courage to lead with intelligence and hope. He only knows bombs and guns. And that's not the right way to solve anything.

They should declare the day Bush leaves office a national holiday, maybe even a world wide celebration. What could we call it? Free from the Jerk-off Day? Chicago will bring the pizza.

This President is a joke. Our teachers no longer teach children to love learning, they teach children how to take multiple choice tests.

As for the teacher who posted, I rest my case. I'm extraordinarily grateful she doesn't teach my children. Her entire agenda was covered in one word anyway....infanticide.

WELCOME TO CHICAGO President Bush. We are appreciative of your leadership of this country in times of great peril. Your universal victories over a discordant and ineffective Congress this year is illustrative of your capabilities. Oh, and congratulations on the Gallup Poll finding that you are America's Most Admired Man.
