HOWELL, Mich.--On the eve of a critical primary to help decide the Republican nomination for president of the United States, the campaign strategy has become a form of the old adage that all politics is local.
Amid questions of whether the national economy is headed toward recession, there's no debate about Michigan's bruised economy. And so, a national campaign has come down to which GOP presidential contender can offer the best leadership to turn Michigan around.
On Sunday, Republicans Mitt Romney and John McCain dueled over who could better lead a restoration of Michigan's economy. In the process, the two argued about a presidential campaign that each contends has devolved into unnecessary pessimism and negativity that will do little to inspire voters.
Closing out the final weekend before the state's Republican primary on Tuesday, Romney also traded criticisms with a third and surging rival in the contest, Mike Huckabee, over which of the two was more honest about their tax policies when each served as governors.
With the close primary contest considered a barometer of Romney's political viability, needing a victory after finishing second in contests in Iowa and New Hampshire, the former Massachusetts governor criticized McCain for saying that some jobs just won't be coming back to Michigan.
"The last thing you need in a state like Michigan is more pessimism and if he's saying those automotive jobs aren't coming back, well how about the jobs that are still here?" Romney said on CBS' "Face the Nation."
Romney, a Michigan native, is the son of the late former Gov. George Romney, who also was chairman and president of the long-defunct American Motors Corp. from 1954 to 1962. Running a Michigan-centric campaign, he noted that he's "got the automobile industry in my blood veins" and vowed an infusion of government research dollars into development of alternative fuels and criticized new federally mandated mileage standards mandated upon automakers without corresponding research money.
But McCain, appearing before a crowd of 600 people at a banquet hall in Howell, said he was "optimistic" about Michigan's future and pledged similar help in providing government assistance for energy research that would create new jobs.
"I think we all know Michigan is in very bad shape," McCain said. "I have strongly recommended that we understand that Michigan can lead the nation and the world again. We've got the technology here. We've got the academic base. We've got the ability to bring green technologies to the world and Michigan can lead."
McCain dismissed Romney's characterization as "this old negative stuff that, frankly, he's engaged in for a long time and it hasn't worked and I don't think it works now."
Romney also maintained his previous position heading a successful equity firm has provided him with the knowledge of how to trim bloat in Washington and make the changes in the federal system that the public is demanding.
"If you want somebody who knows how Washington works, there are a lot of people to choose," he said. "But there's only one guy who understands how America works."
But McCain defended his efforts at being an agent of change in Washington and said experience is necessary to make it work.
"I have been very active in change, but the point is you've got to have the knowledge and the background and the experience to know how to make those changes," he said. "I know how to fix many of the problems that are there because I have been there."
McCain also used his appearance to defend himself from criticism that his sometimes maverick approach to the White House or Republican-inspired agenda items is a sign of "disloyalty" or of not being a true conservative.
"I will match my record against anybody's. I have a record of service in the congress of being pro-life, pro-defense, anti-regulation, anti-taxes," said McCain, the New Hampshire primary winner.
Romney also labeled as "disingenuous" Huckabee TVs ads promoting tax cuts that Huckabee implemented while serving as Arkansas governor. Romney maintained that even after Huckabee's tax cuts, taxes rose in Arkansas by $500 million.
Citing a conservative economic group that has run attack ads against Huckabee, Romney said Huckabee's "liberal on taxing. He's liberal on spending. He was liberal on commutations for prisoners."
"This is not the kind of Republican that you'd expect to go to the White House," Romney said.
But Huckabee told CNN's "Late Edition" that "it's almost sad to watch" Romney's criticism when Romney raised fees in Massachusetts by "over a half-a-billion dollars."
Huckabee acknowledged that taxes in Arkansas were increased under court order to improve education funding and that highway construction taxes also were increased. He said he had no "apology" for either.
Huckabee said Romney, who headed the Bain Capital private equity firm, did an "admirable" job in some quarters but also led the restructuring of businesses that resulted in bonuses being paid to top officials while "a lot of people went home without a pension and a paycheck."
"It would be nice if Gov. Huckabee would stick to the things he knows about," Romney responded. And borrowing a Biblical tone from Huckabee, a Baptist minister, Romney said, "Don't cast rocks at people who are trying to create jobs and turn around businesses. We need people who know how to do that."

The economy of Michigan was destroyed by the liberals and unions.
There is a lesson here to Americans as your government employee unions have created similar economy destroying obligations for all the country to pay.
Read the PEW report on unfunded taxpayer obligations that will take from the workers and give to government employees for decades.
http://www.pewtrusts.org/news_room_ektid32368.aspx
Your government has lied to you and hid the secret deals for decades. Now the truth is coming out and the cost will continue to undermine the dollars value. until all the information is released in 2009.
Ultimately the unfunded costs are likely to exceed $1.5 trillion dollars. Tax payers are responsible to come up with that money above and beyond your current taxes.
Government employees, long considered the most unproductive members of our work force are going to live like kings and steel from the private workers for the next thirty years.
That's liberal & union mentality, hide it from the people until it is to late.

YOU CAN BLAME THE UNIONS YES INDEED, BUT ALSO CORPORATE GREED, BOTH CREATED AN ENVIRONMENT OF DESTRUCTION OF MICHIGANS ECONOMY, OWNERS COULD NOT COMPETE, CONSTANT DEMANDS FOR BETTER HEALTHCARE BENEFITS HIGHER WAGES, ETC. THE COMPANIES HAD TOO DO WHAT THEY COULD TO STAY IN BUSINESS, LACK OF SALES DUE TO POOR QUALITY, A RESULT OF DISGRUNTLED EMPLOYEES AND CORPORATE POLICIES, ALL HAD SOMETHING TODO WITH LOSS OF JOBS AND OUTSOURCING AS THE OVERSEES MARKET IS MORE PROFITABLE FOR MANUFACTURING. THE UNIONS SHOULD HAVE NOT BEEN SO DEMANDING, THEN BUSINESSES WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN FORCED INTO WHAT IS NOW EVERYONES LOSS.

I love when "Conservative" Repugnanats promise workers all kind of govt.assistance.
Then,when they're elected,they do everything in their power to destroy the unions.
Thus,giving middle class workers lower pay and fewer benefits.
To all union members across this country:
If you want to see income stagnant or decline,lose health benefits,or see your job shipped overseas,
VOTE REPUBLICAN!!!

Mitt Romney looks promising in Michigan it is his home state and he is conservative favoring tax cuts, less government.
John McCain is a Washington insider who the drivebys love so they can beat us with Hillary or Barack in the fall.
They don't fool anyone and I am a real conservative who mistrusts the drivebys anyway but, now more than ever.
McCain is against tax cuts, for amnesty, and authored McCain Feingold to keep incumbents in office while taking away our free speech during campaigns. Enough already. Jerry White, Springfield, IL

What kind of empty headed perspective is that?
Don't you have anything substantive to say? Here I lay out specific points and all you can do is.... empty- idiotic- nothing

That's not what the CEO's of Detroit are saying. Every one of them points the finger at rising health care costs.
When is the GOP and its legion of Kool-aid drinkers going to wake up to reality?

What does Chryslers bailout have to do with this?
Unions and the liberal socialist that run them have indeed put the death grip on US auto makers.
Ant the point is that the last bastion of union stronghold is the government employees.
NOT ONE OF YOU ADDRESSED THE DETAILS OF WHAT THE UNIONS HAVE DONE TO OUR ECONOMIC FUTURE one and a half trillion dollars in secret (off the book- like ENRON) agreements.
ANYBODY WANT TO EXPLAIN HOW OUR GOVERNMENT GOT AWAY WITH THIS ??

Oh yeah, it was all the liberals and unions fault.

I can just picture it. The 'Go' meeting, Dearborn Michigan, June, 1955;
(Mercury Division Chief FMC (William 'Bill' White));
"Ok! So here it is! Marching orders. Bob One, you call the vinyl suppliers and get them moving! Bill light a fire under the engine development section! I want 430CI and 360 horsepower! Jim, cancel the brake upgrade program! Too expensive, not 'sexy'! Nobody buys brakes!!
Jim Dillbright;
"But sir! My engineers have come up with some great solutions on the 'brakes/suspention/safety' project. With this much horse power we need some basic standards for handling and ..."
Mr. White interrupts;
"?Uh, uh, Dillbright is it? Look! We don't have time for it. Or the money for it! The engine and chrome upgrade plus the 'horizontal antenna' project has soaked up all the extra money in the budget! Get with the program, Dillbright! Nobody buys a car for the brakes or seat belts! Tucker proved it. Be a team player, son! Give me a warm fuzzy! Nobody cares about the B/S project! Look; keep working on it. Low key it. Maybe next year's Edsel project will be a 'go-go' for it! For now just add more boost to the power brakes! I want all four to lock up if grandma so much as touches that brake peddle with her pinky toe!"
A secretary enters the room;
"Mr. White, there is a Japanese fellow on line two. Says he has an interesting offer about a different kind of small car that is economical to operate."
(general laughter all around.)
Mr. White;
"Right Betty, right (wiping tears of laughter from his eyes). "Tell 'im I'll get back to him right away! After lunch! "
(More loud guffawing all around)
"Let's see? Oh yeah! Bob Two, get ahold of our friends in South Africa and tell them to start putting out all the chromium they possibly can! "
Mr. White ends the meeting;
"Ok, lets break, martini lunch and steaks at Sambo's downtown..."
(More general laughter and applause as the team leaves the conference room.)
(As the executives leave the conference floor, Dillbright hangs back and has a short conversation with Betty. She hands him a memo with a phone number on it.)
Mr. White standing in front of the elevator;
"OK boys, for 'Old Henry' to cover lunch we need to talk a little new business, so think 'Edsel'!
(The first signs of negativity and even some groaning issue forth from the group)
Mr. White continues;
"Come on! Get with the program! By the way, can you believe that Jap!?"
(The good feelings and hilarity are restored with this comment. The group disappears into the down elevator. Dillbright is not among them.)

You are exactly right, "healthcare for life" that the unions negotiated and drove the costs of the employee benefits to a devistatingly stifiling level that is destroying the competitive abilities of the american auto makers.
That is exactly what the government employees got from the polititcains. Behind our backs in secret.
It is exactly what is coming to light in the PEW report.
The unions are going to do to the USA what the unions did to the US auto makers. AND it was secret and behind closed doors. They stole our financial future. The debt to american taxpayers is larger than all the credit card debt in the country combined.
The full accounting reports come out in 2009 but until then detail and estimates indicate for instance that New Jersey is $60 billion in unfunded (off balance sheet) unreported liabilities. This number has only come to light in the last 3 weeks.

To the attention of all political parties!
One of the biggest worries that is going to raise its ugly head during the election year, is rampant voter fraud?
The picture is a dismal one, that only the Republicans have pushed for any legislation? This includes Indiana, that is pushing for picture I.D. to be shown when going to the polling places. Perhaps more than ever in our Democratic process, the 2008 election will be the most significant in the last five decades. Because of the massive influx of somewhere between 12 and 20 million illegal foreign nationals, that could place our system of voting in dire jeopardy. One example is a letter http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=15082 sent out by the Democratic party to potential, but not yet citizens of this great nation. That this actual letter undermines our most basic citizen right; the right to vote! Please read this disturbing letter that more or less convinces foreign nationals or permanent residence the right to vote. Something pure is being raped by scheming political parties, to gain unfair advantage over our system of laws. It scares me to think that our system of voting can be compromised by any person, who knowingly or perhaps innocently uses an absentee vote or enters a voting place to ignore our voting laws. In any courthouse, post office or Department of Motor Vehicles any foreign national residing illegally or not on our shores can sign under the penalty of perjury a declaration to vote? Nothing is more precious in America is a citizens right to vote for a new President , Senator, Congressman, judge of other official? We must have a federal law, or state law that demands that any person who is voting show identifying information, that they are a citizen. That our federal government good at forcing unfunded mandates on citizens, issue a I.D. card, just good for voting and nothing else? Their have been many instances in the past when illegal aliens, without a commitment to our society have caste a vote. In this day and age we cannot afford to compromise this treasured aspect of our citizenship, that the U.S. Constitution separates us from many foreign countries, where the gun dictates an election. Every county polling place should have a police officer on duty, with officials who have been taught to recognize blatant fraud. Alas America has come to this sickening period in it's history, when any party will do "whatever is necessary" to intentionally influence the will of the THE PEOPLE for their own selfish reasons. That means sending letters out to non-citizens to vote for them, or as we saw in California some years back a political nominee blatantly declaring that the crowd vote for her, even though recognizing that many had illegally entered America. I am convinced we need a paper trail, because any fraudulent voting detected should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law!

You are worried about the $1.5?? Really?
Check out who caused it.
http://www.cedarcomm.com/~stevelm1/usdebt.htm
Note: It only leveled out under Clinton.
Also, the private debt, in total, far exceeds the public debt. Americans have been borrowing privately, like drunken sailors.

Doug Zook,
I gave you access to the facts I sure am not going to spoon feed you the answers. There is a link in the first posting to the PEW report. You have to read it carefully to understand it.
As for other facts you can go to the FASB and the GASB to see the differences in accounting standards.
Your ignorance really is not my concern, from reading your empty headed rhetoric for the last several weeks I figure this is all way over your head.
I do hope some people out there care enough to look at what is coming down on us as a country. Just last week Gov.Corzine in New Jersey let the fact be know that NJs previously unidentified liability is $60 Billion dollars alone. THat does not include the $30 billion in pension liabilities that NJ has.
NJ is doomed as are several other states, read the report.
Posted by: give me a break | January 14, 2008 6:45 PM
C. Morris,
The debt I am talking about is not included in your reference. Wake up- That's my point- are you dense? The GASB does not require disclosure of these obligations until filing year 2008 and that means they will not be fully disclosed until 2009. The Pew report if you bothered to look at it explains that.
As for leveling out it would be far more intellectually honest to refer to Newt Gingrich din't you think? Wasn't that part of the Contract with America?
Posted by: give me a break | January 14, 2008 7:24 PM
GMAB,
You don't get it?
It was Clinton's policies and veto's and tax increases that brought the debt down.
It was Reagan's, Bush's 'cut taxes and spend' policies that ran the debt up. (Tax cuts and then more tax cuts going into war, talk about dense. Even a child knows not to do that. 'Trifecta' I guess, huh?)
What we do get is this; The Cons running this mess want to make the gvmt. fail, and they will bring down the country to do it.
Why?
They have nothing to lose. Freedom, right?

Yo C. Morris,
It took me a while to figer out.. cause I'm kinda dense ya no... but your point copied above is very interesting ... ah... fundamentally flawed; in fact - the heart of the problem...
it dawned on me ... it is so fundamental as to why your point of view is so off logic, ... it's not a competition , fool...
Your argument is absurd; government is not, or should not be, in competition with the private sector on this or any other issue.
