A year ago, John Edwards flew to New Orleans to announce another run for the White House. The man America met as a Southern-twanged, hope-is-on-the-way, sunny son of a mill worker emerged in the Lower 9th Ward grimmer, better traveled and quicker to attack, his policies more ambitious, detailed and liberal.

The tone and manner were as if Edwards' persona had been transformed, or at least as if Edwards listened to different people now. Was that true?

"Yeah," he says. "I listen to me."

A tight clutch of advisers say his 2004 defeats and the years that followed gave Edwards the knowledge and confidence to shed caution in what could be his last run for elective office. "Urgency" is the one-word bumper sticker many of them use to describe Edwards '08.

Rivals note that Edwards is also a legendary trial lawyer with a focus-group-honed skill for swaying juries. His political evolution coincides with a leftward drift in the Democratic electorate. Some of his top issues this campaign -- including global warming and poverty -- hardly show up in his six-year Senate record.

In a candidate profile in today's Tribune, we explore the central question of the former North Carolina senator's second presidential bid:

Is John Edwards finally being himself? Or is he just down to his last closing argument?

Edwards is a closer, and he will win Iowa.

The corporate media is trying to ignore him, but they can't stop him in Iowa.

Edwards must be the nominee in 2008.

John Edwards is just another utter phony.

He's the suger-plum coated version of Rudy Giuliani, the most irrepressible liar in American politics.

"Edwards might, however, reconsider -- he is, after all, a serial apologizer. Of his actions during his six years in the Senate, he says: My vote for the Iraq war? Sorry about that. For the Patriot Act? I don't know what I was thinking. For No Child Left Behind? Oops! For liberalized trade with China? Forgive me. For storing waste in Nevada's Yucca Mountain? I was for it before I was against it."

Per George Will's column in the Washington Post.

You have to ask yourself, "do we really want an ambulance chaser in the White House."?

Nice back-handed swipe at lawyers, Mr Tankersley. If nothing else, we can be sure that Edwards is a better lawyer than Boo$hy is a CEO.

Here we go again, yet another "hit piece" on Edwards. And not a very good one at that just another recycled attack piece. At least you could be original Mr. Tankersley instead of repeating the same lines that others of your ilk have used before you.

I know one thing I've learned from this election there are quite a few hacks working in the media. They sing the same tune over and over and over.

Mr. Tankersley, my apologies for my earlier remarks. When I read this blog posting it really ticked me off that it was so slanted against Edwards. However, I did read your entire piece about Edwards and I found that it was a much more balanced piece. I still think this blog piece is awful but your full story is much better.

I guess this means we will get more stories about how eeevil those BIG hospitals were that he sued, and how rich people just sit around their swimming pools counting their money.

Maybe Chavez can help write his next speech.

....or maybe he is finally realizing that his class warfare message isn't selling. That only works on a jury, not voters.

I think Edwards will help the average American better than Obama or Hillary would. Hillary will be more Cheney/Bush--only on steroids. Look at her votes and look at her lack of directness. She will continue NAFTA and all of the Bush trade agreements. The best thing for the USA now is Edwards/Biden, or else Edwards--with Biden as Sec'y of State. When the MSM cites the polls, it is helpful to remember that 60% are undecided, or else decided--but the silent majority for the candidate of reason.

Class warfare is never helpful because a president must view the entire citizenry as his constituents. This is most obvious in his attack on NAFTA which by any objective analysis has been more success than failure. Full and free trade worldwide is the wave of the future and we should concentrate on education of our youth and the necessary retaining and placement of those who will be affected. The union leadership is understandably in denial on this issue but they are part of the education process and pandering "protectionist" talk by Edwards AND Hillary on this subject is not leadership.

If I lived in a 28,000 square foot mansion and could convince people I was really concerned with global warming and poverty, I'd skip law and politics and go into sales. What a con man.

Gee, whatnow, you wanna talk about con men. Who was it that convinced so many voters that he was a compassionate conservative? Hmmmm?

John Edwards is clearly the only man who can sucessfully create a universal health care system, repair relations with our European allies, create an easier immigration process and sucessfully fight against global terrorism. Mr. Edwards as an Irish immigrant to this grand country, you sir are the man i will vote for. It is because of men like you that i desire to be apart of this country. God bless you sir and you have my vote!

This blog is alarming to me. We will never reclaim our democracy if we continue to believe that cynicism somehow displays intelligence when all it does is show one's selfishness and short sightedness. Edwards became a changed man when his 16 yr old son died, and his empathy for those less fortunate then himself was deeply strengthened when his wife was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Death does that to people - you can trust it. He means what he says and I think his conviction makes him fearless. We cannot let our country and our values be destoyed.

The problem with Edwards campaign is the same as that ol' Foreigner song, "It's too repetitive."

Who won the NPR Democratic Debate in Des Moines Iowa?

The people on this blog must really come from a Swamp. John Edwards is the only candidate that will be better than any other Democrat,Republican or Independent candidate running for office. It's too bad many of these bloggers are so ill informed.

Urgnet.

John, had a couple of thoughts. liked the things you talk about but have some to ad.
regardless of what the other two say i have to tell ya that you seem to not be going into this with blinders on. and most of the people that i know have been watching how you have not been atacking the others in your party.
doesnt impeachment mean you are no longer wanted in the white house? im not sure who is wearing the pants there. but i really dont want another four years of bill. and if so who are we going to find under the desk this time?
i was on the phone with Verizon yesterday, took 45 minutes for someone to answer the phones!! when answered was a voice from another country. asked where are you located and they wouldnt answer. it made me stop and think arent these companies bassed in the USA? and if so dont they get their tax credits here? so what kind of break are they getting have a business here and claiming all their expenses here but in reality they have almost more people in other countries than they have here. wow where are the jobs going. and why the heck are we giving them any breaks at all. maybe we should be giving them tax credits for the amount of people they have working in country rather than what their expenses are. for i am sure a lot of the expenses they are claiming are out of country expenses. they worst part of this is they arent the only ones making big using overseas labor, and at the same time ripping off the IRS ( wow should say us taxpayers ) none of your party has talked about this. i have a lot to offer to throw you competitors off their shoes. the one thing i think we can all see is hillary if she makes it saying bill will be her vice pres. and if not how many pres will we have at the same time. they are making a joke of this election. all in all hope you win. if your interested in any good ideas to realy talk to the people about that you havent all ready talked about. mail me back.
anyway good luck. if the right things are said you have a potential 60 more votes in Pa that are unexpected since we are republicans.
