The Swamp

by Rick Pearson

DES MOINES—Republican Mike Huckabee, a Baptist minister, defended the role that faith plays in his life and said by his personal definition, it would be a miracle for him to defeat rival Mitt Romney in Iowa's lead-off caucuses.

Huckabee, a former Arkansas governor, said on NBC's "Meet the Press" today that potential caucus-goers have been "bombarded" with negative TV ads and mail from Romney and others, including during the recent Christmas holiday. Instead of Christmas cards, he said, "they were finding out what a bum Mike Huckabee is."

Huckabee also conceded that the attacks, including a series of commercials launched by Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, may have softened his support in recent weeks after polls had showed him overtaking Romney—the longtime Iowa GOP frontrunner.

The former Arkansas governor again maintained that Romney is running "a very desperate and, frankly, a dishonest campaign," not only against him but in ads targeting Sen. John McCain of Arizona in New Hampshire on the issue of illegal immigration.

"Now, Sen. McCain and I are rivals for the presidency, but I've said on many occasions, I'll say it here again today, Sen. McCain is an honorable man and I believe he's an honest man. I believe he's a man of conviction. And I felt like that, when Mitt Romney went after the integrity of John McCain, he stepped across a line. John McCain's a hero in this country. He's a hero to me."

Huckabee attacked Romney for claiming to support gun-owner rights while backing restrictions on firearms and for touting opposition to abortion while approving a $50 co-pay for elective abortions as part of Massachusetts' health care plan.

"Those are not the marks of a person who's pro-life and pro-Second Amendment," Huckabee said.

Romney's campaign responded to Huckabee's remarks by challenging the former Arkansas governor's contention that he had not reduced methamphetamine sentences while in office. Huckabee had previously acknowledged allowing good-behavior time off prison sentences to deal with penitentiary crowding. Even with the good-time provision, Huckabee had maintained meth sentences were still harsher in Arkansas than Massachusetts.

Romney's campaign also contended Huckabee falsely implied that tax increases he supported as governor were either court ordered or approved by voters when a gasoline tax increase was imposed without the need for voter approval.

In his interview with Tim Russert, Huckabee, who has been benefiting from the backing of evangelical Christians in Iowa, said he would never "want to use the government institutions to impose mine or anybody else's faith."

"If people want to know how I would blend those issues (of faith and government), the best way to look at it is how I served as a governor," Huckabee said.

"I didn’t ever propose a bill that we would remove the capitol dome of Arkansas and replace it with a steeple. You know, we didn't do tent revivals on the grounds of the capitol. But my faith is important to me," he said.

Saying he has been very candid about the influence of religion on his life, Huckabee said "I've never tried to rewrite science textbooks. I've never tried to come out with some way of imposing a doctrinaire Christian perspective in a way that is really against the Constitution."

But when asked about his opposition to abortion, Huckabee said, "That's not just because I'm Christian, that's because I'm an American. Our founding fathers said that we're all created equal."

Huckabee also was questioned about his support for a failed proposal in Arkansas that would have given in-state tuition rates to the children of illegal immigrants who graduated from Arkansas high schools. In an earlier debate, Huckabee said the proposal reflected his belief that "we're a better country than to punish children for what their parents did."

Since that time, Huckabee has proposed an immigration reform plan that would require illegal immigrants to leave the country within a 120-day window in order to seek citizenship or lawful re-entry to the United States.

Asked what would happen to the children of illegal immigrants, who were born in the United States and, as a result, American citizens, Huckabee said: "They go with their parents. I mean, I can't imagine a parent not taking their children."

Challenged why American citizens would have to leave the country, Huckabee said, "Because they're first, before they're American citizens, they're the children of their parents."

Asked by Russert if he would consider it a miracle if he won the caucuses on Thursday night, Huckabee said: "By my definition? Yes it would."

Hucabee is a theocrat with little ability, other than typical preacher parlor tricks. Romney is doing the country a huge favor in exposing this guy for what he is before he gets elected to something important.

He does however make a compelling arguement for John McCain!!!

Tim Russert went very easy on Pastor Huckabee on Meet the Press today. This proves that Pastor Huckabee is the choice of g-d. Pastor Huckabee has the foreign policy experience to clean up the mess in Pakistan and elsewhere with one swipe of his mighty arm. For example, Pastor Huckabee punctuated a point about having John Bolton as his foreign policy advisor the other day by discharging his shotgun over the reporters' heads, because he's a tough law-and-order man. In the ensuing melee, he didn't have time to mention that he may also be advised by Kofi Annan, Henry Kissinger, and Mikhail Gorbachev. The other thing that has not been mentioned is an explanation of Pastor Huckabee's comment about Pakistanis entering the US illegally. What Pastor Huckabee probably meant was that rather than coming in from Mexico, the Pakistanis are smuggled in by cargo containers originating from the so-called geographically shared eastern border with Afghanistan. This would make sense because, as Pastor Huckabee mentioned, martial law is being enforced in Pakistan, so that everyone else must remain inside their homes which would allow terrorism suspects to slip into the containers unnoticed for transport to the US. Yes, Pastor Huckabee apologized for the Pakistani affair, but he did that because he is a true Christian and that is what Christians do. And since as he mentioned he has a theology degree and most of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were clergymen, it carries extra weight with Christians, so he was able to raise $89,000 in the one day 'money bomb' on December 27. Pastor Huckabee also knows that we must protect Israel at all costs for it is in the Bible. He has the power of a multinational corporation, Amway, at his disposal to bring the countries who won't get in line on terrorism to their knees. Oh, how happy everyone will be when Pastor Huckabee is president and puts the Christ back into Christians!

Huckabee has had his 15 minutes and the sand is running out of the hour glass. Like another former Arkansas governor...and wife, the Huck doesn't wear well.

Huckabee seems to be a nice guy but maybe too soft...1033 pardons and commutations???

Romney is what America needs to turn the economy around!

A miracle? Please! It would just show things have not changed and the American people want to have the wool pulled over their eyes. Lets see: the huckster is deficient in geography just like Bush. Just a few days ago he said Pakistan shared an eastern border with Afghanistan. In bashing fat people he is letting special interest (Pharma) pull his strings just like Bush. And like the current president he recognizes the few issues such as abortion and gun ownership are all the Christian right care about. Even though everything else is falling apart. So a whole nation and dream down the tubes because of the obsession of a right wing zealots. What is new here???

Well, Illogic Prisoner, you might use some of your 'logic' by doing a little research on Huckabee. I am a resident of Arkansas and know first hand what kind of abilities to govern he has. As a Democratic state, we elected him into office 4 times. He improved our roads, schools, health care for our children [Arkids] and took us out of debt into the black. What does that say about your "logic"? Romney is a liar.

Mike Huckabee will win Iowa and will go on to be the next President of the U.S. Not only because he is the ONLY honest candidate running, but because he has the conviction, fortitude and moral and ethical boundaries to lead our country.

It seems that Mr Huckabee is a "do what I say, not what I do" type of Christian. Did he forget that Jesus said that he who was "without sin" should cast the first stone?

Why does he think he can casually attack his opponent as being dishonest, when he himself has had some candor issues?

Mr. Huckabee, who is the real phony? Do you think he might be one of the following:

1) The guy who formerly said that AIDs victims should be isolated?
2)The guy who said he consulted John Bolton and others on foreign affairs, when he hadn't?
3)The guy who said that negative campaigning was wrong but then proceeded to spew out vitriolic character attacks on his opponents?
4)The guy who attempted to harness his religion to meet his selfish political agenda?
5) The guy who accused his opponent of being dishonest but can't seem to identify the dishonest statements?
6)The guy who covered his tracks by refusing to allow journalists to review his record? (He continues to deny access to his sermons while he was a pastor and personal records while he was governor.)

Please Mr. Huckabee, stick to the issues.

Mike Huckabee gave the kind of thoughtful answers to Tim Russert's typically hostile interrogation on Meet The Press that I have grown to expect of him. But it should be said that the role of the press in America is NOT to play gotcha for entertainment purposes, but by their interviews to help the American voters determine who has the best qualifications to be the next President. As with their government, it is the duty of the people to ensure that the press does its job and if not, to replace it by whatever means necessary with another that will do its job with integrity and honor.

Huckabee had a few good one-liners in the debates, but I hardly think one-liners are what we need to solve this world's problems. His skills as governor include raising taxes, letting criminals out of jail, enticing illegal aliens with college tuition. How is that any different than what any of the democrats would do? The only thing I want Huckabee to do is teach my Sunday School class.

The Republicans really have a bunch of sad sack candidates this time around, Huckabee is a nut, Rudy is a crossdressing pimp and Willard Mitt is a flip-flopping serial liar.

Appearing on Meet the Press two weeks ago, Republican/Droid Party candidate Mitt Romney spoke out of so many sides of his metallic mouth that he sounded like a creepy calliope. As a public service let's distill Willard's MTP hour into bite-size pieces and puts them into the giant throbbing translation tube:

Willard Mitts - Meet The Press "Answers":

-"When I said last week that 'freedom requires religion,' I was quoting John Adams. So it's all his fault and he has been dismissed from the campaign."

-"I hate discrimination, but I supported my church 100 percent when they discriminated against blacks until 1978. Trust me...my brain is super-advanced so I can do that."

-"I support abstinence-only education in schools. Even thought it's been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that it doesn't work, it still seems like it should, doesn’t it?"

-"Every embryo needs a decent Christian burial."

-"No guns for the crazies! Oh no, I just lost half of my supporters by saying that, didn't I..."

-"Look Tim, I used to be a Jedi until I was seduced by the dark side. Cut me some slack here. I mean, you try saying 'no' when someone's standing over you with lightning bolts shooting out of his fingers. But to answer your question, yes, Bob Jones and I had a pleasant meeting."

-"Let me correct something, Tim. I did not have a pink house! Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha! That would be, like, so gay!" (Perhaps someone should tell that to Brad Pitt.)

-"A fee is not a tax. And when I become president I plan to dig us out of our financial hole by charging fees on the owners of those highway signs that say things like, McDonald's---Next Exit. Two billion bucks per, baby."

-"The Brady Bill has been revised several times. Mostly by Satan."

-"When I promised to be even more liberal than Ted Kennedy on abortion and gay rights back in 1994, I was speaking as a conservative Republican."

-"Iraq is a mess, but don't you dare say that George Bush is arrogant and has a bunker mentality. Can we go to a commercial? I think I need a battery change."

He is not the ONLY honest candidate running! Ron Paul is the most honest I know, and who I feel is going to fight for my personal liberties! Huckabee is npt honest - he lied about having a Theology Degree for goodness sakes! Huckabee would run this country on his owns beliefs and I don't think he would care about anyone else's beliefs. Abortion and our founding fathers? What?! He makes no sense. I'm voting for the good doctor (who hasn't lied about his degrees) and vote Ron Paul!

I just want to know why the author referred to Huckabee as a Baptist minister and Romney as a former governor. Huckabee is also a former governor. Very biased reporting. Shame on you.

I didn't realize most of the founders were clergymen. I would note that Charles Darwin was also a clergymen.

The first step to enlightment is doubt.

Mike Huckabee is a man who has served God, his church, his community, and his State with honor. He has always worked to make things better. He is a fine candidate for President. Romney has been called a phoney by the Union Leader and the Concord Monitor. His hometown newspaper, the Boston Herald, endorsed McCain. Arkansas re-elected Huckabee so that he served more than 10 years in office. Romney served one 4 year term. That tells me how well each candidate served his constituents.

Huckabee is first on my list, if not him then Romney. I don't want any of the democrats but I would probably take any of them over Ron Paul. That's just my opinion and I have one vote, the same as the rest of you.

Mike Huckabee Must Be Stopped

Thank goodness Huckabee has finally seen some scrutiny. Although Hillary, Obama, and McCain have never actually run anything (business, etc), inexperience is much better than the experience that Huckabee gained as governor of AK. He had a chance to prove himself, and proved that he is not worthy of the presidency – even by Bush standards.

Huckabee’s only true “appeal” is that he is a Christian. It’s a bit too egotistical to say “Vote for me because I’m better than the others – why am I better? – because I’m Christian.” Well, being a Christian isn’t exactly a qualification – I’m talking to you, Iowa.

Huckabee may sport one hell of a public speaking smile, but he has a dark side. Actually, he has many dark sides. See http://www.salon.com/opinion/feature/2007/11/13/huckabee/ for more details. Below are some highlights – or lowlights.

Huckabee tried to force Roby Brock, the host of a public TV show, off the air for critical commentary. Huckabee had to pay $15,000 to settle the suit.

Huckabee compared journalist Max Brantly to Jeffrey Dahmer (in print, even) for publishing articles critical of the governor.

Huckabee has either pardoned or commuted the sentences of over 1000 felons, 12 of which were murderers. One particular rapist (DuMond) claimed to have found Jesus, so Huckabee pressured the parole board to let him out. He raped again, and killed this time. Was Huckabee wearing his minister hat, or his governor hat when he pardoned the rapist who found Jesus?

In 1992, Huckabee paid himself with campaign funds. He was apparently his own “media consultant.” After he became governor in 1996, he accepted tens of thousands in gifts from people – people whom he later appointed to state office!

Huckabee used campaign funds to pay for trips in his own personal plane – and failed to disclose that the plane was his. This guy is a self-dealing maniac.

He tried to claim $70,000 in furnishings provided by a wealthy cotton grower for the private part of the residence as his own, until he learned ethics rules prevented it.

He even took control of the state Republican Party's campaign account -- then swore the account had been somebody else's responsibility when it ran afoul of federal election laws.

Huckabee was even SANCTIONED by an ETHICS COMMISSION on at least 5 occasions. In one case, he was saved by the swing vote of a woman who left the chairmanship of the Ethics Commission days later to take a state job. She listed the governor as a reference on the job application.

Huckabee even once sued to overturn the ban on gifts to him.

In early 2007, reporting also prompted the former first lady to decline dozens of place settings of governor's mansion china and Irish crystal that had been purchased with tax-deductible contributions to the Governor's Mansion Association, nominally set up to improve the mansion, not to buy going-away presents for former occupants.

Huckabee even tried to subsidize education for ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS.

Huckabee professed opposition to alcohol and gambling, but he allowed passage of legislation that made it easier for restaurants to obtain private-club mixed-drink permits in dry counties. Over the angry objection of the church lobby, he sped final action on a bill to allow video poker at the state's racetracks, an act followed not long afterward by a $10,000 campaign contribution from the owner of the state's biggest race track, at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs.

Huckabee left Arkansas with a bill of more than $40 million for overcharges of the federal government's Medicaid program.

When he left office, Huckabee crushed computer hard drives so nobody could ever get a peek behind the curtain of the Huckabee administration. Apparently, he is not a fan of transparent government.

Huckabee even raised more taxes in 10 years than Clinton did in 12 years as governor for AK (http://www.arkansasleader.com/2007/11/editorialswhos-biggest-tax-raiser.html).

After the school shooting at Westside Middle School near Jonesboro, Arkansas where four little girls and a teacher were killed by two young gunmen, Huckabee decided to CASH IN on the tragedy. He received an advance of $25,000 from a publisher to write “Kids Who Kill.” And no, he did not donate any of the money to the families of the murdered children, or any other fund for that matter.

Now if you want to vote for this guy just because he’s Christian, you’re just plain stupid.

The comments by Huckabee supporters sound thoughtful and mature. The comments by Huckabee bashers sound like taunting by naughty little children who want to get attention by saying bad words. We're going to find out how many of each there are in Iowa on Thursday. I am betting on the people of Iowa and Mike Huckabee.

Tim Russert went easy on Huck in this morning interview. I believe the media elites would love to have the Huck as the presidential nominee because the democrats could beat him.

If republicans want a republican in the white house this next go election, they need to support Mitt Romney. He can win. He has run a honest campaign.

Hucks record is not so flattering so Huck accuses Mitt of being dishonest. What Huck needs to do is address his record and stop trying to run from it. Huck was a very liberal governor and conservatives need to see what this guy is all about before he moves into the white house. Mitt Romney is doing conservative a favor by exposing his record. I have read many blogs from people in Arkansas who have said in a nutshell that Huck was a liberal governor.

Mitt will win. He is a winner. He will do great things for the United States and he will honor his commitments. He has demonstrated this time and time again in private and public life.

Bottom line...it the media likes Huck it is because a Democrat could beat him.

It's all about illegal immigration.

It is at invasion level proportions. It is affecting our schools. It is affecting our hospitals. It is affecting our courts and jails. It is affecting the quality of life in our communities.

Republicans and Reagan Democrats see this and understand this.

That is why pro-illegal alien poseurs like McCain and Huckabee are dead in the water.

They are unelectable.

I also thought that Russert was easy on Huckabee. Instead of asking him questions about his faith, he should have asked about his statements that contradict his faith.
For example, Huckabee didn't vote for a bill that would deem floods and tornados as "Acts of God" because it went against his own conscience belief that God is not capable of doing these things. (Isn't God sovereign?)
If you don't believe in evolution, why wouldn't you want the textbooks changed? Either you believe it or you don't!
Huckabee agreed with the Supreme Court ruling that said that sodomy was a Constitutional right. HUH?
Huckabee says that faith (backtracking from his anti-Mormon statements) shouldn't have anything to do with the election and that he would appoint an atheist to cabinet. Isn't faith the only thing that he has been running on?? He knows that the rhetoric that he is dishing out is what evangelicals are wanting to hear. This Christian knows that he is wolf in sheep's clothing. (What is up with the ethics investigation involving $70,000 in furniture from the governor's mansion or his wife's personal use of public funds? Google it!)

Huckabee was an Excellent
Governor of Arkansas
and would be an Excellent
President too. He is very
honest and serves his
country to the fullest.

"What does that say about your "logic"? Romney is a liar."

Well smarta%s, I know a snake oil selling tax and spend scumbag when I see one. Now if thats what you want, go for it. One Jimmy Carter was enough for me!

Hey you democrats out there: would you support a republican who was a better leader for president?

Hey you republicans out there: would you support a democrat who was a better leader for president?

Or are you a knee-jerk ideologue?

After eight years of the worst presidency this country can endure, we do not need a president whose main agenda is leading this country on an evangelical crusade.

I find it kind of funny that the Romney supporters on here are so defensive about his religious beliefs and yet here they are on here bashing Huckabee's religious beliefs.

Don't get me wrong, I think all of the Republican candidates are p*ss poor but Romney is a flip-flopping serial liar of the worst kind, he'll say whatever he thinks people want to hear.

From the internet(s):

Mitt Romney Fields Questions After His Big Speech At The Bush Library In Texas:

Reporter: So Joseph Smith put the golden plates in a hat?

Romney: Well, I really don’t want to get into all the nuts and bolts about...

Reporter: And he translated what was on the plates with what, again?

Romney: The Urim and Thummim.

Reporter: Can you spell that?

Romney: No. Look, the point is that religion and politics should never be...

Reporter: And the angel Macaroni told him where the plates were?

Romney: Moroni! It's the Angel Moroni! And I really don’t see why...

Reporter: Did anyone else see these gold plates?

Romney: Look, guys, this is getting way off-topic, and...

Reporter: Isn’t it odd that Joseph Smith put the plates in a hat...then read the words on the plates to a transcriber...who was writing behind a curtain...and then Smith buried the plates so there's no independent verification that they ever existed?

Romney: Oh, they exist, pal...they exist! And if you say one more goddam word about...

Reporter: Hey, you're not supposed to swear!

Romney: I know, I know. I'm sorry. I just... I just want to talk about why my faith won’t interfere with my being president, is all. So if I could just say...

Reporter: Now, your church considered blacks to be cursed during its first 150 years. So when that position was reversed recently, in 1978, was there an adjustment period where it was like, Hey, this is a little freaky...

Romney: No!

Reporter: Like, Hey, get outta my chair! Oops, I forgot, you're on our team now...

Romney: I'm not answering that!

Reporter: Governor Romney, about the Planet Kobol. As president would you have NASA send some sort of a probe to explore the surface of...

Romney: That's it! We're done here.

Reporter: Would you say your magic underw...er, sacred garments are in a twist?

Romney: God, I need a drink... Of water! Of water!

[Ker-SLAM!!]

Touchy.

I see there are a lot of Huckabee bashers on here, one even wrote a book, you should find a publisher but after all that, you didn't change my mind. Actually, since you wrote so much that most decided not to even read you ranting, it just reassured me to vote for Huckabee so I really don't know what you gained.

Hey John P,

Define "better leader?"

Or are you just simplistic & condescending?

Huckabee is not even a good christian leader. Please don't give him to us. How can he square his pandering warmonger point of view with being a christian? He chooses to ignor a good bit of the new testament. Unless you consider the John Hagee type of christian a christian. They both would make much better Jews or Muslims. They don't have to deal with the New Testament.

I don't care that Huckabee is a so-called christian. What bothers me, is that he has consistantly used his so-called religious accomplishments to boost his campaign as well as attack others.

The only thing Huckabee wants you to think is that he is some how qualified to be president because he used to be a baptist minister and is a so called true "Christian Leader".

Look through his "Awe Schucks" act and see him for what he really is. Mike Huckabee is a wolf in sheep's clothing that uses the religion card to push his own agenda.

Mitt Romney is doing the country and the Republican party a huge favor in exposing this fanatic Huckabee for who He is. The media and the Democrats are doing everything they can to prop him up. Lots of media time and attention in hopes the Huckabee will be the Republican nominee as they already have more than enough ammo to bring him down. Who they fear is Mitt Romney as He is a fighter as Huckabee and McCain are finding out. Hey McCain is fair game He knows as well as anyone what shots He has to take to run for President.

I think Huckabee is a great candidate. That is, if you like your candidate dumber than a box of rocks.

Mike Huckabee: proudly almost smarter than Forrest Gump!
