The Swamp

by Rick Pearson

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa—Acknowledging a tightening race in Iowa, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney challenged rival Mike Huckabee's fiscal record of raising taxes in Arkansas and supporting in-state tuition breaks for children of undocumented immigrants.

Romney, who has seen his longtime front-runner status in the nation's first caucus state challenged by the former Arkansas governor in recent weeks, also questioned whether rival Rudy Giuliani could defeat Hillary Clinton in a general election contest because the two were so "similar" on social issues.

Appearing at the Kirkwood Community College, Romney noted a record as Massachusetts governor of cutting taxes 19 times, though he acknowledged "not all of those were backbreaking lifts."

"I'm proud we reduced taxes in Massachusetts and I'm proud that we reined in spending," Romney said.

"Gov. Huckabee was (a) governor," Romney said. "He talks about his desire to rein in spending, but as governor he took spending from just over $6 billion to $16 billion and he financed that by raising taxes time and again. He raised sales taxes, gasoline taxes, grocery taxes, even taxes on nursing home beds."

Huckabee has often described his record of cutting 94 taxes in Arkansas but does not mention that other taxes increased during his tenure more than outstripped the lost revenue. He also has attributed an increase in state spending to an influx of federal funds, not dollars over which he has actual discretion.

But Romney on Friday also did not mention that he raised a variety of fees and ended some corporate tax breaks that generated more than $500 million.

Romney also criticized Huckabee for supporting an initiative in Arkansas that would have allowed the children of undocumented immigrants to pay in-state tuition rates and be able to obtain scholarships to attend state universities. Huckabee has said he believed it wrong to penalize children for the mistakes of their parents.

"I was a little surprised that in getting into the real facts here actually Gov. Huckabee fought in favor of giving in-state tuition breaks to illegal aliens. That is something which I disagree with," Romney said.

"I would cut back on federal funds to colleges that gave out in-state tuition breaks to people who are here illegally," he said. "If we've got enough money to give out breaks, let's give it out to U.S. citizens."

Romney defended his stepped up criticism of his rivals, saying he was discussing issue differences and not personal attacks.

"Well, when you take incoming fire day after day, at some point you decide you're going to return fire," he said.

Romney said he would leave it up to the "pundits" to explain why the GOP race in Iowa has tightened. With Romney spending millions of dollars in the state and Huckabee spending several hundred thousand dollars, the Massachusetts governor was asked by a reporter whether Huckabee was a better money manager. Romney at first looked befuddled before saying, "Sorry I don't have any particular comments on that."

But he did contest the viability of Giuliani, the former New York mayor, as a Republican in a general election contest against Clinton, a Democratic New York senator.

"I think it would be very difficult for our party to win the White House if our nominee was so similar to Hillary Clinton on abortion, on same-sex civil unions, on guns, on sanctuary cities and on a record of ethical lapses—and I'm referring to the Bernie Kerick matter."

As New York mayor, Giuliani supported abortion rights, gun control, extending rights to gay couples and not pursuing undocumented workers employed in the city. And Giuliani has said he made a mistake in not fully vetting the background of his long-time friend and police commissioner, Bernard Kerick, who he later recommended to President Bush for homeland security director. Kerick was recently indicted on federal corruption charges.

Romney, however, had little comment on whether Giuliani had sufficiently answered questions about whether the costs of his city security detail were improperly hidden throughout obscure offices in the municipal budget, particularly during a time when Giuliani was carrying on an extramarital affair. Giuliani has denied any fiscal wrongdoing occurred.

Romney also defended the use of a taxpayer-funded security detail while he was Massachusetts governor and said the purpose of security is "24 hours a day, regardless of what you are doing."

"Whether you're taking a vacation at the beach or traveling for politics, that's a very normal procedure," Romney said. "You don't have security only when you're on official business. Security is associated with your travel and protection wherever you are."

Romney is right about one thing, Rudy is a lying sleezeball, snake oil salesman. That being said, I hope the Republicans are dumb enough to nominate Rudy Julie-Annie so I can have the pleasure of watching that corrupt phony crash & burn in the general election.

As New York mayor, Rudy Giuliani billed obscure city agencies for tens of thousands of dollars in security expenses amassed during the time when he was beginning an extramarital relationship with future wife Judith Nathan in the Hamptons, according to previously undisclosed government records.

“Badmouth”???? ...what the f’ing (now that’s “badmouth”) are you talking about? Romney is actually telling the truth - he is reiterating what is general knowledge and in the press/media about Rudy and Huckabee! How is that “badmouth”?

This might be the real Mike Huckabee:

Disc jockey for president
Tuesday, Nov 27, 2007

By John Brummett

One of the national writers putting together a profile of Mike Huckabee asked how it might be that this preacher showed such an affinity for popular culture.

The Chuck Norris alliance, the tailgate party in South Carolina with the wrestler, the pardon for Keith Richards, the playing of bass guitar in a rock cover band offering Lynyrd Skynyrd - isn't all that out of character for a man from the Southern Baptist pulpit?

Actually, Huckabee was a radio man before he was a preacher and he has remained more decidedly a media man than a pulpit man.

His superficially likable nature, which provides the essence of his oddly succeeding presidential campaign, comes via a disc jockey's shtick rather than a pastor's. I refer to the rich intonations of his professional voice, the music, the hip topicality, the impersonations, the jokes, the Mr. Glib.

It can't be those radical policies. Outlawing abortion altogether, not merely leaving it to the states, is extreme. A national sales tax to replace the income tax is a gimmick, either scandalously regressive or entirely too difficult to design so that it wouldn't be. He barely scratches the surface on foreign policy with what got described over the weekend as "cheerful know-nothingness." He denies the better points of his record in Arkansas, since they're entirely too moderate for modern Republican primary voters.

His is wholly a candidate of personality, and, as such, is more Don Imus than Billy Graham.

Yes, Imus. Huckabee can be mean and inappropriate. It usually doesn't get revealed until the second impression. He's still making his first out there on the trail.

As a midteen, Huckabee found work, including some on-air, on a Hope radio station. Then he had one of those seminal religious moments. So he figured he'd apply his talents and interests to serve Jesus through Christian broadcasting.

That led him to the seminary, after which, almost by accident, he got preaching work in Pine Bluff, then Texarkana. In both towns, he supplemented the preaching with work for which he was better-suited and that he more enjoyed. That would be a local cable television show.

He attained the presidency of the Arkansas Baptist Convention not so much by conventional preaching as by the clever politics of making himself palatable both to fundamentalists and moderates. It was from there that he moved to secular politics.

When Huckabee was lieutenant governor, needing something to do in that pointless job, he accepted an invitation to substitute for a vacationing radio talk show host. He invited me to be his guest, mainly so he and his callers could berate me. He was fully at home and adept in the radio booth.

One day as he prepared to ascend to the governorship, Huckabee had a news conference. I was struck by his intimacy with the TV cameramen. He joshed with them authoritatively about their equipment, specifically about the comparative modernity of one station's gear versus another's.

Then the producer of his cable show in Texarkana, Gary Underwood, joined the governor's staff. Huckabee and Underwood transformed the governor's conference room into an audiovisual studio. They produced a slick, self-promotional cable television program that they distributed for use by ever-pliable local access channels.

As Huckabee prepared to become governor, he said one of his dreams was to do radio play-by-play for a Razorback football game. Naturally, as the new governor, he was obliged. He described a few downs, smoothly and ably, of course.

From time to time I've written an unoriginal but incisive line, which is that Huckabee is really running for his own show on Fox or MSNBC. I'm sticking with that.

But I'll admit there are moments lately when I wonder if he'll have to go through the motions of being the Republican presidential or vice presidential nominee first.

Romney's having trouble arguing with the truth that Huckabee is a witty, likeable, humble person - NOT someone that just wants to be King or Queen. I've seen his speeches. Very impressive. Much like JFK and Reagan, he's going to be noticed. Not to be mean in any way, but Romney is going down and he knows it - hence the hateful words. The rest (on both sides) will follow suit. As Huckabee once said, "When your being kicked in the rear, it proves you're ahead".
"President Huckabee" - it kind of has a ring to it....

Granted, we have yet to find a candidate who has reached such a state of perfection so as to never have any worries or concerns over them. Every candidate has made mistakes along the campaign trail. Every candidate has a great deal to learn about the changing morals, cultures, beliefs, and opionions of we Americans. We are as "flip-flopping" as any group of people in the world and its a good thing we try to keep an open-mind about things or we would stop being world leaders in most things.

This article's headline is misleading. Romney has made a point of not "badmouthing," which most consider the equivalent of mud-slinging. There is a clear negative connotation to your headline. Even today when asked about the most-recent allegations of Giuliani's misuse of security funds, he responded by saying Giuliani should have a chance to respond first.
This kind of misleading discredits the article and your entire publication.

Here is Huckabee on immigration, and his opinion of what Romney says about him:

Huckabee is the man!

I think it's sort of funny that Romney has been characterized as a good looking guy of no substance, but the reality is that he's got the best policy, the best leadership skills, and the statesmanship to keep the discussions of his rivals on the issues. Huckabee (as the above commenting supporters show) is the real example of a nice looking guy (with no substance behind him).

Get the facts straight guys and stop spreading false stories about Huckabee. You are getting your information from the Club for Growth, not crediable.

Here are the facts:
" Governor Huckabee didn't "sign a sales tax hike." An overwhelming 80% of the voters chose to do so through an amendment to their state's constitution. He supported the measure, however, because he believes that conservatives should be "conservationist" and that clean lakes, streams, rivers, and forests are a necessary expenditure.

Notice they also left off the rest of what Cato had to say:

"In his first budget, however, he redeemed himself by proposing a sweeping overhaul of Arkansas's archaic income tax system. The $80 million tax cut package was enacted in 1997 and became the first broad-based state tax cut in more than 20 years. It increased the standard deduction, eliminated the income tax "marriage penalty," and indexed the state tax brackets for inflation."

He supported an internet sales tax in 2001 (Americans for Tax Reform 01/07/07).

" Indeed, Governor Huckabee joined 43 other state governors in sending a "strong and unified message to Congress: deal fairly with Main Street retailers, consumers, and local governments."

As the letter stated, "If you care about a level playing field for Main Street retail businesses and local control of states, local governments, and schools, extend the moratorium on taxing Internet access ONLY with authorization for the states to streamline and simplify the existing sales tax system. To do otherwise perpetuates a fundamental inequity and ignores a growing problem….The loophole creates serious budget problems for schools, states, and local governments. A study estimated that states could lose as much as $14 billion by 2004 if they are unable to collect existing taxes on Web-based sales. Nearly half of state revenues come from sales taxes."

" Governor Huckabee supported the federalist position of allowing the states-not Washington, D.C.-to decide whether sales taxes were collected from goods sold within an individual state. Why should the federal government be allowed to say that Amazon.com must be given a 7% tax break over a local Arkansas book store owner?
He publicly opposed the repeal of a sales tax on groceries and medicine in 2002 (Arkansas News Bureau 08/30/02).

" The CFG fails to note that Arkansas law prohibits deficits and requires that the state budget be balanced.

" According to the article cited, the reason Governor Huckabee opposed abolishing the food tax was because it would drain $168 million from the state's Medicaid budget by eliminating the soft drink tax. The article also notes that the Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce and Associated Industries of Arkansas also opposed abolishing this particular tax, saying approval would likely lead to an increase in the general sales tax.

He signed bills raising taxes on gasoline (1999), cigarettes (2003) (Americans for Tax Reform 01/07/07), and a $5.25 per day bed-tax on private nursing home patients in 2001 (Arkansas New Bureau 03/01/01).

" The CFG fails to note that 90% of the state's budget is spent on education, Medicare, prisons, and human services.

" The CFG fails to note that the gas tax was used to fix 1,300 miles of highway, much of which was considered the worst in the country.

" The CFG fails to note that the cigarette tax was used to cover a budget shortfall. In 2003 the state's chief financial officer projected a $62.3 million revenue shortfall that would result cuts in state services, possible layoffs, tax increases or the possible repeal of late 1990s tax cuts. The Legislature was presented a series of options and chose to increase the tax on tobacco.

" The CFG fails to note that the bed-tax on private nursing home patients was instituted to generate revenue for a nearly 3-to-1 match in federal Medicaid funds. Without this revenue low-income patients would not be able to find beds in nursing homes.

In 2004, he allowed a 17% sales tax increase to become law (The Gurdon Times 03/02/04).

" Notice the odd wording, "allowed…to become law"? Here is how the Cato Institute report describes the incident:

"In response to a court order to increase spending on education, Huckabee proposed another sales tax increase, and the Legislature sent to him a smaller sales tax increase with a corporate franchise tax to make up the difference. Huckabee let it become law without his signature."

" Governor Huckabee had three options: sign the bill into law, veto the bill, or let it become law without his signature. As the Governor told the Arkansas News Bureau (1/28/2004), "If this is what they want to put their signature on and their stamp on, then I should let them do it, even though I think that's pathetically less than what we ought to be shooting for, it will let the public see that that's the best they could offer."

He proposed another sales take hike in 2002 to fund education improvements. (Arkansas News Bureau 12/05/02).

" In Arkansas, 49% of the tax revenue comes from Sales/Use taxes. Such increases were required to meet the legal requirement to balance the budget. The citizens of Arkansas, like most true conservatives, the benefit of having an educated populace far outweighs a 7/8-cent tax increase.

By the end of his 10-year tenure, Governor Huckabee was responsible for a 37% higher sales tax in Arkansas, 16% higher motor fuel taxes, and 103% higher cigarette taxes according to Americans for Tax Reform (01/07/07),…

" As noted above, the Governor allowed the sales tax to increase from 5.125% to 6% (+7/8 cent) to increase funding for education.

" As noted above, the 3-cent higher fuel tax was used to make needed repairs to the state's dilapidated highway system.

" As noted above, the cigarette tax was used to cover a budget shortfall of $62.3 million

I am a resident of Massachusetts and I can tell you that Mitt Romney did raise taxes but he did it through a hike in all state fee's. Romney was terrible for Ma. and if you think he is really a conservative you are sadly mistaken.Romney is going after Huckabee with falsehoods because he is so very desperate. All that money he spent and doesn't have much to show for it, really sad. Huckabee has spent a only about a million and has got maxium gain out of a small investment. Huckabee is who we want handling the expenses in washington..

Romney looks and sounds like a used car salesman. I think America is tired of millionaires like Romney who wanna be president so they can line their pockets even more! He was pro-life, then pro-choice, then pro-life again. Same for gay rights....flip,flop,flip,flop, this man will say ANYTHING to get elected.

These attack articles about Mike Huckabee are getting ridiculous; if you're going to vote, do yourself the service of researching the candidates from different sources; I can tell you that if you do so with Huck, you will be very pleasantly surprised. I know that I was, and I fully support Mike Huckabee.

Mike Huckabee's honest, humble and trustworthy style of speaking is winning everybody over. I had the chance to personally talk with Mike one on one at an event in Ohio and I got to say, he is truly a very believeable and very likeable guy.

His messages are so positive and uplifting. His communications skills are what every motivational speaker would love to have. He can unite a group of people so easily with his down home charm.

Mike has a very unique skill to talk with people, in a non-offensive manner. He makes everybody feel like they are number one. And he really means it too. Very humble person, someone you can totally totally trust.

Even Time Magazine voted him one of the best Governor's ever. Mike will continue to skyrocket in the polls, it's almost impossible to not like Mike. I encourage you to go meet and talk with him in person. You too will feel the geniune, humble spirit he has. In my opinion, this guy is going to become an American icon, mark my words,
America is in store for one super amazing time period in history.

You need to explain the headline of this article. There was no "badmouthing" involved here, no negative campaigning or mud-slinging

Reporter: "Governor Romney the Iowa race has tightened and you have spent MILLIONS in Iowa while Governor Huckabee has
spent several hundred thousand does that make Huckabee a better money manager?"
Governor Romney:("befuddled") "I do not have any particular comments on that."
PRICELESS!

In the final days of the GOP primary, attacks are being launched against at the candidates, and it is hard to know just what to believe. I have been following the primary with scrutiny since last summer and have taken the time to research all of the candidates and their positions. After a good deal of research, I am of the conviction that Mike Huckabee, who is becoming a very real challenger, is the one we need to put into the white house this year. One of the biggest bricks being lobbed at Huckabee, is that he is not a "fiscal conservative" as he claims to be. Quite simply, this is not true. Consider the following to be my first political opinion article. Thanks for reading, in advance!

I find it ironic that the forerunners, Gulliani, Romney, Hillary, and Obama especially try to compete in the debate about being "fiscal conservatives" and launch incorrect attacks on Huckabee of all people. Consider the following point:

The presidential race has had a LOT to do with money for a long time now. It seems that the person who has enough money to put into campaigning via TV, staff, advisers, and silk Armani suits, are the ones who are considered viable candidates. This is not to say "he who has the most money wins," but certainly it has been "he who does not compete in the multi-million-dollar-realm-and-spend-gobs-of-cash" does NOT win. It is "normal" (and horrifically wasteful) for presidential nominees to campaign in the way of the big bucks.

Like most, I have simply taken this point for grated coming into this year. Sure I wish it would change, but it didn't look like it ever would. As long as people saw fund raising ability as a critical point for presidential viability, this point could never change.

Here is a different way of looking at it, though. Once the said presidential campaigner wins and goes into office, he is used to big spending, used to being able to get money out of people, etc. What was skillful campaigning outside of office translates to tax and gov't spending in office. How ironic it is for a multi-million dollar commercial aired for weeks in several states to advertise Gulliani, Romney, or even Paul as "conservatives who favor less government spending".

But, what if a presidential candidate were to come along and make a climb by the seat of his pants? What if a man, with the support of little more than his church and family, launched a campaign that would grow into a real threat among the top dogs? Then, what if that person got to the point of REALLY being able to win the ticket?!? Such a person would :

1) Make a resounding statement for future presidential campaigns to chew on.
2) Prove that Americans still hold to values that are in other colors than green, when considering leaders
3) Have to be someone awfully special, to the point of being able to inspire people to spread the word for him, without the use of TV time
4) Be a TRUE fiscal conservative out of office, and -- much more importantly -- in. Why? Because they will have learned the valuable lesson that SO much can be accomplished by SO little money if people are willing to follow you.

Now, allow me to introduce you to such a person: Mike Huckabee. A quote from the Time Magazine:

"Our campaign is not about high-paid consultants," Huckabee said Thursday in an interview with The Associated Press. "It's about ordinary people who've come from as far away as Oregon and Florida to get to Iowa, many of whom are coming up there from Southern states where they're having to buy a coat so they can survive going door-to-door, answering phones, getting out material and signing up people for the caucuses. Huckabee has climbed to second place in Iowa polls despite having millions fewer dollars than his rivals."

Consider these other quotes that support what I am talking about:

Dallas News: The former Massachusetts governor's spending in Iowa has been 10 times greater than Huckabee's and, until this week, Huckabee had not run a single ad (versus Romney, whose ads have already run over 5,000 times)... It's tough to see how someone who wants to get rid of the IRS, which Huckabee's "fair tax" initiative would do, can be thought of as someone who loves big government.

Time Magazine: Huckabee has raised just $2.3 million in total, and had $650,000 cash on hand as of Sept. 30, but he is surging in Iowa polls. In the latest Rasmussen poll he even overtook by a couple of percentage points Iowa front-runner Mitt Romney — who by comparison has raised $62.8 million so far this cycle and had $9.2 million cash on hand as of Sept. 30." (NOTE: Given the raised money to cash on hand, Romney has spent 53.6 MILLION dollars by Sept. 30 on his campaign. Compare that to Huckabee spending less than 2. Interestingly, Huckabee is beating Romney in some national and all Iowa polls, even so).

Save Talk Radio: I am not a social conservative champion. I am a fiscal conservative and I support Governor Huckabee.

Anybody who wants to eliminate the income tax, payroll tax, corporate tax, dividends tax, capital gains tax, alternative minimum tax, and the estate tax is not a fiscal liberal.

Anybody who wants to publish on the internet every check written out of the United States Treasury for scrutiny by the people is not a fiscal liberal.

The Hill: In Arkansas, the income tax when he took office was 1 percent for the poorest taxpayers and 7 percent for the richest, exactly where it stood when he left the statehouse 11 years later. But, in the interim, he doubled the standard deduction and the child care credit, repealed capital gains taxes for home sales, lowered the capital gains rate, expanded the homestead exemption and set up tax-free savings accounts for medical care and college tuition.

Most impressively, when he had to pass an income tax surcharge amid the drop in revenues after Sept. 11, 2001, he repealed it three years later when he didn't need it any longer.
He raised the sales tax one cent in 11 years and did that only after the courts ordered him to do so. (He also got voter approval for a one-eighth-of-one-cent hike for parks and recreation.)

Finally consider the man we put on the GOP pedestal, the last true fiscal conservative, Ronald Regan. At this stage of the game, Regan during his first campaign was "flat broke." He later said, "We were so broke, we were sleeping three to a room in New Hampshire and eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches," Regan learned that his honesty, strength of character, and positions were what the American people wanted, so he continued to use his resourcefulness in office to accomplish great things and government spending cuts. I am convinced that Mike Huckabee would do the same.

Will you join me in voting for the true conservative (in so many ways)?

"Badmouths"? I have been following this campaign in the old and new media for months now. Everyone has been taking shots at everyone else but no one has ever been accused of "badmouthing" until now. What a horribly slanted article. Are you baiting us? Do you get promotions based on how many comments and reads your article gets instead of how accurate and professional your piece is?

If Romney really wanted to "badmouth" Huckabee he would tell you the story the journalists from Arkansas tell but which no one else in the mainstream media seems to want to talk about. Huckabee is a huckster. He violated (or was caught) the campaign finance rules FIVE times. On one occasion he paid his babysitter with campaign cash--this wasn't even a close judgment call and shows what an idiot he is. On his way out of office, in a true demonstration of Nixonian paranoid, he directed that all the governor's office computer harddrives be smashed. While his computer techs were smashing he was loading up the moving van with government art, rugs and decor from the Governor's mansion that was clearly not his. This guy is a scandal waiting to happen. No, Romney didn't badmouth him but I wish he would. Romney is scandal free and bullet proof. No one has a dossier on him and Hillary knows it. Hillary insiders say she is more afraid of Romney than anyone else. Therefore, Mitt has my vote.

WHAT A CROCK...LOOK AT WHAT NOVAK Says..He is trying to save face because his & the Club for Growth's(greed) attacks on Governor Huckabee aren't working. Can't wait for the Huckabee Tsunami wash all these old style, know it all, penny pinching, irrelevent consrvatives out to sea.

Robert Novak with a column today says:Strategists for Mitt Romney's Republican presidential campaign were actually pleased that fast-rising Mike Huckabee moved ahead of Romney in the Rasmussen poll in Iowa, eliminating surprise if Huckabee finishes first there in the Jan. 3 caucuses.

Gimme a BREAK!
Actually pleased???Yeah right- IF They were true conservatives they wouldn't be pleased at all!!! because per dollar per vote Romney's camp is fiscally liberal Compared to Governor Huckabee!!!!!

Governor Huckabee is the most articulate, humble, real candidate out of all of them-after all the verbal stumbles of the Bush presidency we have finally discovered someone who can communicate republican principles with wit & wisdom. McCain came out ok. Romney just got a beating..wow..definitely NOT his night. I wonder what Hugh Hewitt and all those who were so ready to give Romney the mantle of conservatism are doing after this one. HUCKABEE is a force to be contended with, and tonight he showed WHY he is on the rise in Iowa. The Underdog is poised to take a bite out of Rudy McRomney on Jan 3rd. The others were all a distant..3rd...Duncan Hunter had some ok stuff and Fred is frankly coming across as kinda like..hey man ..someone please pick me for VP so I can sport my hot wife around DC. And what was with the INQUISTION Style question the crackpot youtuber asked about the Bible(As if he has ever read it)(and all the man on man gay questions...and the rebel flag...weird..there had to be some better questions that those...but wow did the gays in the military question make Romney look like a TOTAL flip flopper...what a bad night for him.

I just listened to Huckabee's U-Tube luncheon conversation as was suggested.

He views are moderate liberal to me. He might be conservative on life but a moderate liberal on all his other issues. He is not the strongest conservative candidate. He has some conservative beliefs, but is talk does not show me that he will decrease government. He needs more than heart he needs wisdom also.

Whatever happened to the old adage,"If you don't have anything good to say,
don't say nothing".

To me, Huckabee is a foregone conclusion. Like the country is going to vote for the mayor of NEW YORK CITY, or a northeastern blue-blood.
Give me a break!

The best part about Huckabee is his honesty, integrity and true conservative roots. He lays out his beliefs and stands on the issues and refuses to waver when speaking to different groups. He is the only true conservative in the field, both socially and fiscally, and is a person who can truly galvanize the Republican base. He is someone we conservatives have been missing for quite some time now.

People forget that electing a president, or any public official for that matter, is the political version of a board of directors selecting a CEO. While we all love Mr. Rogers, putting him at the head of microsoft, apple, or google would send those companies down the tube (no matter how baptist he is).

Badmouthing - paleeze
You know, it's interesting....I can see how Romney comes off as a slick empty suit. But the reality is that he is not. Huckabee does not have what it takes to get the nomination. Especially financially. He is too much fluff and not enough substance. That is just the reality! I also think that Romney is a far better leader, more intelligent, thinks outside the box, and would do better for this country than Huckabee by a longshot. I hope people will start doing more research and look at the bigger picture here.

I could care less if my president was articulate.

It's WHO he is and what he DOES that matters.

Huckabee just happens to be articulate AND has more common sense than all the other candidates combined.

"Huckabee does not have what it takes to get the nomination. Especially financially. He is too much fluff and not enough substance."

The exact same thing was said about Reagan. Huckabee WILL win the nomination and up until last month, I would have bet my last dime on HiLIARy. Not anymore.

When you say that Huckabee has no substance, you prove to people that you have not listened to his speeches. Try this one out first:

I don't see why there isn't more press about why liberals would rather face ANYONE but Dr. Ron Paul. Much as we'd like politics to be positive, it is in fact ruled almost entirely by negatives. For instance, what's the biggest negative the Republican Party is facing in 2008? Iraq - a staggering 70% of people favor IMMEDIATE withdrawl from Iraq. Who is the only candidate that doesn't have that negative? Dr. Paul, who advocates using those trillions of dollars to secure our border (perhaps against Saudis who were 20 of the 24 terrorists in 9/11) and rebuild our crumbling infrastructure which is far more worrying than the loss of Social Security. Hm, full employment, withdrawl from Iraq and a huge boost to our economy from rebuilding our infrastructure - what Democrat wants to run against that. Hence the behavior of known liberal biased network CNN, who wants us to nominate either Guiliani or Romney - both of whose negatives are so high the copy practically writes itself!
