The Swamp

by Mark Silva

As “social conservatives’’ assess the field of Republican presidential candidates and attempt to rally around one, a leader of the movement maintains that one is not only unacceptable, but also unable to win a potential contest with Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton.

That’s Rudy Giuliani, former mayor of New York, the only Republican voicing support of a woman’s right to choose abortion.

Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council and host of a forum for the candidates next week in Washington that will culiminate in a straw poll of conservative voters, says activists who have long worked to promote “a culture of life’’ will be unable to support Giuliani -- and that spells defeat for the party at the polls. Yet, dismissing talk of any need for a third party candidate, Perkins does not believe it will come to that.

“There is no desire to create a third party. There is no action underway,’’ Perkins said in a conference call with reporters today. “There is simply a statement that if the party breaks ranks with social conservatives, there will be a number of social conservatives who break ranks with the party…. If the Republican Party advanced a pro-abortion rights candidate, then we simply couldn’t be there.’’

It’s not enough that social conservatives would be upset with Clinton winning the Democratic nomination, he says. Conservatives will need someone to rally their support at the polls.

“I don’t envision the majority of social conservatives actively moving toward endorsing a pro-abortion rights candidate,’’ he said. “This issue runs strong, and just to sing the simple ABC song – Anybody but Clinton -- is not enough to rally social conservatives who have been working for 30 years to support a culture of life.’’

s Voter turnout will be greatly affected by the party's choices of nominees, he says. And conservatives will find "little difference'' between Giuliani and Clinton on a November ballot.

“My experience has been that you don’t beat a liberal with a moderate, because what you have is a motivated base on the left and a lack of enthusiasm on the other side,’’ he said. “In the eyes of many social conservatives, on social conservative issues, there is little difference between the two…

"When you get to a point where you have two candidates who are pretty much indistinguishable on those core social issues, then yeah, it’s kind of hard to see why you should vote for one over the other.’’

Yet Perkins maintains there is time for social conservatives to find their candidate and bypass the dilemma that Giuliani would create for a party that has based its victories on a coalition of social conservatives, fiscal conservatives and foreign policy conservatives.

“We don’t think it’s going to come that,’’ Perkins says.

“Support has not solidified for one of these candidates,’’ he says – but the “Values Voter Summit’’ planned in Washington on Oct. 18-20 should help advance that cause. With perhaps 2,000 or more expected to attend and hear each of the Republicans speak for 20 minutes, they will close the conference on that Saturday afternoon with a straw poll.

“I am very optimistic, given the field of candidates who have a lot to offer, that there is going to be one or two candidates emerge…. with a strong consensus of support from social conservatives,’’ Perkins said. “I am pretty optimistic that we are going to see the field solidify.''

Perkins has been meeting with Dr. James Dobson and other conservatives voicing increasing doubts about their ability to support the Republican Party’s nominee if the GOP sides with a supporter of abortion rights. This has given rise to speculation about a third-party candidate for conservatives.

Yet, Perkins said today, talk of a third party has “been misconstrued a little bit. It was not a declaration of intent to support a third party,’’ he said of a recent meeting. “I think it was a declaration that there is a line that we will not cross, and that is the issue of life… If they sound retreat by advancing a pro-abortion candidate, I think the consensus is that we are not going to go that direction.

Dobson will address the conference at its Friday night dinner.

"Social conservative: GOP cannot win with Giuliani"

I hope he's right. Giuliani is THE natural heir to Bush/Rovism, and that ain't a good thing. If you like the divide and conquer, my way or the highway, with us (Republicans) or against us, nothing to use but fear itself rhetoric of the past 7 years, than Rudolph William Louis Giuliani is absolutely your man.

And if you like a guy who managed to actually INCREASE his city's budget deficit in the midst of the greatest economic expansion in American history, IMAGINE what he can do with the national budget in a time of economic uncertainty?!

I'm at the edge of my seat.

There may be a few "social conservatives," who would sit out if Guiliani becomes the GOP nominee, but that's not all of us. I would vote for Guiliani and it's not just because of "anybody but Clinton." Guiliani is on the right side on most issues. One issue voting never worked for me anyway.

Funny how these christian conservatives support the death penalty and unjust, unneeded and ideological wars, isn't it?

When did Christ ever talk about abortion? I remember him talking about helping the poor and healing the sick, but abortion?

Social conservatives don't think Rodolfo can win? What a revoltin' development this is!! Astonishing! America needs a Godfather like Don Giuliani. Who else in this country, besides Hillary/Bill of course, can utilize a dust mask so effectively? America needs an experienced dust mask wearer in the White House. With the likes of Gary Bauer, Ralph Reed, Tony Perkins, Larry Craig, Tom Delay, Ted Haggard, Mark Foley, etc. etc. around, Don Giuliani is sure to have a big supply of dust masks on hand.

The greatest economic expansion in American history ws engineered by REPUBLICIANS with the "contract with america " which the Dems at the time said was totally impossible.Rudy will be an excellant president and I hope Rommey gets the V.P..
or Rommey as president and Rudy as vise

Giuliani cannot win period. There is little light on the fact the New Yorkers hate him and he wont even carry his own state. Fact is, Ron Paul is the only one with a chance of beating Clinton. I don't feel that change is wanted by some though, at least with Clinton the GOP can have someone to blame for the many problems it caused. Paul would take out the trash which would include many corrupt Republicans. That is why he is feared by the media and panderers of the GOP.

Johnny:

You may be a "social conservative", but the people they are talking about are the good ol' boys and girls who listen to what Dobson, Robertson and Perkins say and follow it to the letter. And it is quite a bit of the Republican Party, especially in the South.

So basically, Johnny, there are a lot of them out there - unlike you, however, they usually cannot think for themselves - they wait for God's messengers (see above) to tell them what to do.

Ding:

Wrong!! The expansion began with the Clinton/Gore economic programs started WAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY before the Contract on
America in 1994.

Nice try.

This is not the first Swamp article highlighting some Republican saying they won't support Rudy, nor will it be the last.

People like Perkins know that the media will only cover their remarks if they say something bad about a Republican.

Most social conservatives will back Giuliani against likely Dem nominee Clinton. So long as the Dem Party follows its self-destructive course, driving pro-lifers out of the Dem Party and imposing an ideological litmus test, people who are on both sides of the abortion debate will find a home in the one national party that includes people on both sides--the GOP.

I think the GOP can win with Giuliani. I think a majority of republicans are secretly hoping that these people will go away and form their own party. Republicans would take a hit in the short term, but come out ahead in the long term.

niselib,
It was in the Bible, right after the part where God says it's an abomination to "lie" next to another man and just before God said it was an equal abomination to eat shrimp, lobster and other sea creatures.

Bruce:

The GOP offes a home to people on both sides of the abortion debate????

That is the funniest damn thing I have ever heard!!!!

What is the official policy of the Repubican Party? Which party is the one that wants to do a "Right to Life" amendment??

And the Republicans do not put a litmus test on their appointees??? Oh, Puhhlleeze!!

The Republicans treat the Pro-Life members of their party like they do not exist.

Rudy had no problem with illegal alliens, being pro-choice, pro-gun control, supports homosexuals, & supported his then mistress with NYC tax dollars.

"One issue voting never worked for me anyway"

I guess some conservatives don't understand what it means to be conservative.

But, hey! Let's all gang-up on the Frost family!

As long as hillary loses. The thought of her as president frightens me more than when Sister JoAnna caught me sneaking sacrimental wine after a funeral.

Hilarious. First Rudy and McCain lose any chance of getting center or conservative Democratic votes by sucking up to the aptly named 'movement' conservatives, then the same group of ✺'s turn around and stick it to them. Yeah, my sides are hurting, all right.

Nisleib, please explain how you folks can equate taking the life of a serial killer like John Gacy to the aborting of an innocent baby?
Ooops, dumb question. John Gacy was a Democrat and a precinct captain at that, so what he did to this boys was a good thing to be honored and admired. Sorry, my bad.

From TheRealRudy.org:
10-10-07

Todd Beeton at MyDD took a look yesterday at Rudy Giuliani's habit of exaggerating time and time again. The most recent being yesterdays GOP debate, in which Giuliani claimed 23 terrorist attacks against the U.S. have been thwarted. The number was apparently pulled out of thin air, as homeland security and terrorism experts were baffled when asked about the number. One expert pointed out that even though President Bush declassified aspects of several thwarted attacks in May, the number appears to be closer to a dozen.

Giuliani seems to be fixated on the number 23, as he recently claimed to cut taxes 23 times in New York City. A check of the facts reveals he's taking credit for cuts initiated by others, counting one cut twice and one cut he even fought against.

On Giuliani's web site, he claims he extended the NYC police force to 12,000 officers, but most of the cops he's counting were already in other departments and simply folded into the NYPD. The merger of the departments didn't create any new police at all.

John D-

Do you think that Jesus Christ, an innocent man who was killed by capital punishment, would support the death penalty?

Would Jesus, who stopped the crowd from stoning the woman caught in adultery, support the use of lethal injection instead of stones?

We, and our courts, are not infallible. The death penalty inevitably kills the innocent. Judicial murder is murder none the less.

Bobin;
Presidents cannot spend money.(ITS AGAINST THE LAW only the congress can do that)Clinton had nothing to do with balancing the budget. When the republicians took over the congress the budget was balanced for the first time since Washington. Now that the DEMS are in "control" again they have spent billions of dollars on a war THEY VOTED for and the approval rating of the congress when from 23% down to 10% and probably will go lower.

John D asks:

Nisleib, please explain how you folks can equate taking the life of a serial killer like John Gacy to the aborting of an innocent baby?
Ooops, dumb question. John Gacy was a Democrat and a precinct captain at that, so what he did to this boys was a good thing to be honored and admired. Sorry, my bad.

A) The Catholic Church coined the term "culture of life." The death penalty and abortion are no-nos to them. The GOP stole the term, and then conveniently forgot about the death penalty.

B) War, while sometimes needed, was not called for in Iraq. That is not just the Pope saying that, that is many religious leaders from many religions. The notable exception is the frothing-at-the-mouth, right wing, brain dead republican Chisto-fascists like you, John D.

C) I have no problem with the death penalty. Actually I do have two small problems with it: it isn't fairly applied and it costs too much. Little known fact, it costs more to execute someone than it does to throw them in jail for the rest of their lives. (At least it used too.)

D) I didn't say we shouldn't execute serial killers, that is a straw man and you know it.

E) My point is that these GOP Christian Freakwads are barely even Christian. They don't follow the teachings of Jesus'.

Did that clear things up for you John D?

Oh, and by the way, Republicans are just as likely to be serial killers as Democrats. Do you remember Ted Bundy? And, John D, you know I’m not a Republican or a Democrat, I’m an independent who can’t stand Bush (or Hillary, or Mitt, or the Christian clowns who try to take away the freedoms Americans are supposed to share.)

Another Christian, the Bible is full of God's word for an eye for an eye, the right to take the life of someone who took the life of another. Through Jesus the sins of man are forgiven, even the sin of murder. But there is still allowance for man to enact justice, which can include capital punishment. The ultimate forgiveness of done by God, not man.

But if you truly are "another Christian," then you would not be equating abortion with man through laws taking the life of a murderer.

Nisleib, please explain how you folks can equate taking the life of a serial killer like John Gacy to the aborting of an innocent baby?

Isn't the whole premise of the Right-to-lifers that all human life is sacred, even if it's just a tiny cell glob? They seem to only care about embryos in a womb and not those breathing air. And isn't it the Christian GOD's job to judge a life? These hypocrites are not reading their job description and are playing god.

Now that the DEMS are in "control" again they have spent billions of dollars on a war THEY VOTED for and the approval rating of the congress when from 23% down to 10% and probably will go lower.

What may I ask, is a "Social Conservative".

"Another Christian, the Bible is full of God's word for an eye for an eye, the right to take the life of someone who took the life of another. "

John D. Gacy

And if you were a true Christian you would know the difference between the Old and New Testaments.

"the Bible is full of God's word for an eye for an eye"

Yes, but Christ had a response to that, didn't he?

"You have heard that it was said, "An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth."
But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.
If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also. Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two.
Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you."

Jesus also tells us that the one who is sinless amongst us is the one who should cast the first stone (Our push the plunger on the lethal injection). Are you sinless John? Are any of us?

The problem isn't killing the guilty John, it's killing the innocent, the unjustly convicted. That does happen, and that sin is on all of us.

Please do not presume to imply I am not really a christian because I do not believe in the death penalty is just. Christ also teaches us to be humble.

Another Christian,

Trying to reason with John D. is like,,,,like,,,um,,,,,,shouting into a flushing public toilet; The sounds cancel each other out.

Another Christian, I have no problem with someone who is not for the death penalty. I know many good Christians who are against the death penalty. But you made a comment equating the aborting of innocent babies to that putting to death convicted murderers.
Yes, some innocents have been put to death for murders they did not commit. I do not believe in the death penalty for just any murder. I would use the death penalty only for certain, heinous murders, serial killers, etc.
We can quote Bible verse from Bible verse to make our cases. The fact remains is that God did allow mankind to enact justice. In your argument, anyone who commits a crime should be allowed to walk the streets freely, whether it be murder, stealing, etc. It doesn't work that way in a civilized society and God and Jesus's teachings allow for that.

And "Reamer," there are major differences between the Old and New Testaments. The Old consists of many laws set down for man by God, whereas the New Testament is largely about love and forgiveness through faith in Jesus. But, under yours and "Another Christian's" argument, the Ten Commandments would be null and void, and nowhere does the New Testament do that.

Yes, we all fail and we all sin 24/7, 356 days a year. And, yes, God is the ultimate justice administrator. But the Bible clearly allows man to set forth justice while on Earth.

And C Morris, when it comes to reasoning, please provide ONE example in which you have been reasonable. And if you're interested in seeing and learning more about folks who cannot be reasoned with, I suggest looking in the mirror as a start.

your argument, anyone who commits a crime should be allowed to walk the streets freely, whether it be murder, stealing, etc.

Many you're dumb and a terrible journalist to boot. Why do you think you can just make stuff up? Who said criminals should walk free?

All these right wing war-mongers are terrible! they are nothing more than puppets for the Bush-Cheney machine. Hillary will go down in history as one of our best President! second only to maybe Bill! Gore would have been a good one too, if not for being robbed by the Bush posse.

John D,

Sure. Here is a recent example of a perfectly reasoned post;

Your column today makes me scream! basically you say that "ABC approach not enough for Rudy"

Please lets take a step back for a moment
It was only 3 months ago when all Pundits said that the 9-11 approach not enough for Rudy
it was 1 months ago at the last debate when the pundits said that talking to much about about His New York success and too little about the future won't get him elected
Now when talking about the future and HIS ideas Vs. the ideas of Clinton , now its the Anyone-but-Hillary approach not enough for Rudy?

How about ALL three of the above will that be good enough to get him elected,
I sure think so
