They are taking a straw-poll of voter sentiment among the couple of thousand people expected today and tomorrow at the "Values Voter Summit'' in Washington, but voting isn't limited to people in the ballroom. And the campaign of Mitt Romney, who has a lot at stake here, has figured that out.

Romney, who will address the conference this evening, is a Mormon. He also is a relative latecomer to the "pro-life'' cause of preventing abortion.

With one in four of the evangelical Protestants who comprise a significant share of the Republican vote reluctant to vote for a Mormon -- as surveys show -- and with Romney having to convince supporters that his anti-abortion convictions today are strong and true, the former governor of Massachusetts has some selling to do here. But with the party's front-runner, Rudy Giuliani, a supporter of abortion-rights, Romney and other Republicans appearing here also have a certain momentum on their sides heading into that straw-poll on Saturday.

But the Family Research Council's straw-poll lines are open to social conservatives on the Internet as well. And the Romney campaign is courting that out-of-the-hall vote. See the memo that went out last night. It's a rallying call for all Romney voters:

From: Mark DeMoss
Romney Faith & Values Steering Committee Co-Chair

To: Romney for President Supporters

Subject: The American Values Straw Poll

As many of you know, virtually all of the Republican candidates for President are speaking this weekend at the Values Voter Summit sponsored by the Family Research Council. What you may not know is that Family Research Council is also conducting a straw poll and allowing people to vote whether or not they attend the conference.

Time has almost run out. We have until Saturday at noon.

I wouldn’t be writing you this evening if I didn’t believe you could make a major difference for Governor Romney’s campaign.

At this crucial moment for the campaign we want to make sure that America knows that voters like you, who care about values, support Governor Romney.

Let me tell you how simple this is! Just go to www.frcaction.org and click on the large banner “Participate in the 2008 American Values Straw Poll.”

Remember that you have only until this Saturday at noon EDT to get your vote cast before the polls close.

I believe we can make a difference—the difference in this election—and when Mitt Romney becomes the 44th President of the United States, I’m confident he will represent those American values that you and I care about so deeply.

I hope you'll join me by voting in the American Values Straw Poll today. Please visit www.frcaction.org by this Saturday at noon EDT to do so.

Best regards,
Mark DeMoss, Romney Faith & Values Steering Committee Co-Chair

P.S. Today, Romney for President launched its first web ad, "Our Home." The ad features Ann Romney talking about raising five sons and her devotion to her family. Governor Romney believes that the most important work being done in America today is the work going on within the four walls of the American home. Click here to watch the ad .

This Romney is a cheater. No matter what, he's constantly attempting to find a way to manipulate the poll numbers. He wants to buy the presidency. This guy is sneaky, how could anyone trust him as a president?

This Terrance guy is a liar. He is constantly attempting to twist your opinion of good man in Mitt Romney. How can anyone believe what he says?

Why is it the Tribune mentions Romney's religion virtually every day, but not the other candidates? I don't even know what Hillary is, if anything. Or Obama. Is he
a Baptist or what? If so, what are the tenets of his religion? Does he abide by them? McCain? Don't know. Edwards? Who cares? Giuliani? Presumably a Catholic. If you are going to talk religion every day, make it catholic (with a lower case c meaning "universal").

Romney is a man who will follow the law like any noble citizen. He will also do what is in his legal right to win the Presidency of the United State like any other candidate would do. Romney has got what it takes to be a great president; and believe me, the Clintons are starting to get nervous upon hearing of all the support and endorsements Mitt is receiving. Go Mitt.

I don't consider that cheating. After all, supporters of any campaign (Democrats included) could submit $1 and vote for whoever in that straw poll. I support Mike Huckabee. I decided not to pay a $1 just to vote for my candidate in a non government straw poll. I have given my candidate $40 though. I like all of the Republican candidates. But today I would vote for Huckabee if it were election day already.

"Values Voters"? From the trash that gave us Bush/Cheney. WHAT values exactly are you bunch of filth voting for? Allowing the feds to spy on every phone call you make? Approving world dominance for the idiot administration? Giving away our jobs to other countries while the Bushies get cheap labor and basically whore themselves. You're trash and you know it.

Mitt Romney has a great campaign going. His campaign has been very effective and organized. He has been running a tight ship, and in terms of organization, he's really making the other candidates look like amateurs.

Anyone who does well in a Family Research Council poll goes straight to the bottom of my list.

This isn't cheating. If Romney wins the straw poll, it's because more people voted for him. Other campaigns will be jumping on this as soon as they figure it out.

Mitt Romney is running a tight ship? I hope that was sarcasm. His Net Cash on hand is negative $8,000,000. He has lent himself 17 million dollars. This is not a tight ship, this is a ship about to run aground.

To the person who said Romney is running his campaign like a tight ship, how do you explain the fact that he is over $8 million in debt at this point? He's the only presidential candidate, on either side, to carry that much debt. I believe he's trying to use his great personal wealth to buy the presidency.

I encourage everyone here to learn more about Ron Paul. He's truly a man of principle and the real conservative in the race. Visit http://www.RonPaul2008.com

Romney is trying to use his own money to elevate himself into the limelight.

He spent lavishly in the Iowa straw poll. Even in the Illinois straw poll, which was an informal event at the State Far, Romney felt the need to bus in supporters and pay their ticket entrance fee.

It's not illegal, or even immoral, but it does show that he is unable to generate passionate support. He has no chance in the general election.

We need to nominate a Republican that has shown to generate passionate supporters. Do we have anyone that fits this bill this go round?

Mitt keeps on tapping into his personal funds: without them, he would be behind Ron Paul (!) in support and cash. If he really wants the be president, he'll need to dump nearly his entire assets into his campaign. His voters are jumping ship and joining Huckabee, Thompson, and Paul.

Mitt Romney would be NOWHERE in his campaign if it wasn't for his own wealth. I can assure you with him in office, his votes will go solely to the corporate world and you (we) will pay for it with money from your pockets.

Only RON PAUL can mobilize a grassroots movement to dethrone Queen Hillary. Mitt, Rudy and the rest are just stale hot air...nothing new.

Romney is brilliant!

Like any good business leader, Romney learns how to win within the system provided to him.

If Romney is breaking any rules, call him a cheat, but he isn't is he?

The world is a complex place and I want a President who knows how to win creatively, but within the rules.

Just because the other candidates are too stupid to take advantage of the rules isn't Romney's fault.

Bush was the "value voters" cnadidate too, and look how many people have died in Iraq and Afghanistan as a result of his administrations lies.

If you want a candidate who is honest, fiscally impecable, and has strong faith and values, look no further than Ron Paul. He's the total package and will lead this country out of the darkness it's going to be enveloped by.

No worries, the man with the highest integrity and values --Ron Paul will win this no problem.

Vote here and while you're at it, be a part of the largest freedom movement in American history. Donate at ronpaul2008(dot)com

Hah, the Ron Paulians are going to smoke him, let him try to win this poll. Romney couldn't even win the Conservative Leadership Conference straw poll in Nevada he personally attended, where Ron double up on him with 33 pct. Go ahead Mitt, make our day!

Romney isn't cheating by getting his people to register for this poll. I'm a Ron Paul supporter, and I know a lot of RP people who are registering for this, the only difference being it's an independent movement not organized by the campaign.

Don't hate the player hate the game, which is the family values counsel try to bump up its coffers by making you pay to enter.

Romney wants to win every poll. If I were running I'd want to do the same thing.

The problem is the poll, not Mitt.

Honestly, from a public policy standpoint, abortion, stem-cell research, and gun control are good.

If the democrats had a clue on the enconomy, I'd be one of them; until then, I need to throw-up in my mouth and watch the Evangelicals hold conventions and sell Jesus.

I got 2 words for you..... RON PAUL!!!!!!!

Thanks for the advice on how to vote, Romney! I'll now be using it to vote for Ron Paul.

I don't mind Romney, although America will not elect a Mormon. Sorry. Too many people still think it's some kind of cult. You people are delusional to think anybody but Ron Paul are going to win this straw poll. Only the Ziono-Fascist wing of the Christian coalition would vote against Paul.

On every issue except "Continuously blowing things up for Israel", Ron Paul is lock-step with the Values Voters platform. Who doesn't see that?

Those other clowns didn't even have the respect to show up to the actual Values Voters debate, and Giuliani is pro-abortion! Who are we kidding? Ron Paul is the ONLY candidate who can beat the newly-turned warhawk Clinton.

The military's soldiers overwhelmingly support Ron Paul, even over Obama. The military suppliers and private contractors overwhelmingly support Clinton. Those are your choices.

Are you SURE you're a conservative?

Thanks Mitt Romney, but I'll have you know... Ron Paul appreciates my vote, rather than suggests it.

This family value is called confidence.

Learn something?

Ron Paul's stock now stands at a 7.1% chance of vicory, ahead of McCain:

Romney has a history of attempting to influence straw polls, such as trucking in busloads of support for the Iowa Straw Poll.

Corporate shill, anyone?

Ron Paul is the ONLY Republican with a very clean record, consistently pro-life, consistently pro-Constitutional rights, against the evils of war, and for the rights of AMERICAN citizens. Ron Paul 2008!

Terrance Washington is addled brained. Only someone insane or with a low IQ would suggest that asking your supportors to vote for you is cheating.

Never in the history of this country has anyone ever won an election without campagining for votes.

I hope Romney does win and the Ron Paul comes in a close second. If Ron Paul wins the media will ignore it; however, if Ronmey wins they will report it and be forced to show that Ron Paul was second. This give more credibility to Ron Paul since otherwise, with the media black out, most Americans have not heard of Ron Paul.

Ron Paul can win all the straw polls he wants, he will always be an over the hill lunatic who cannot control his temper... He will get squashed come Jan. and end up dropping out... Sorry the truth hurts. GO ROMNEY!!!

Mike Huckabee just came in 2nd place to Romney by 30 votes! And Huckabee didn't have to resort to emailing all of his supporters begging them to vote for him to make up for a VERY shady history on the "values" that our country was founded upon (that's what Romney did). Mike is the only candidate with a crystal clear history on abortion, marriage, etc. MIKE HUCKABEE WILL BE OUR NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES! You heard it hear first. Check out his take on all the issues here:

http://www.mikehuckabee.com/index.cfm?FuseAction=Issues.Home

Republican, Democrat, Independent, or Ron Paul, I think you'll like what you see. (OK, maybe not Ron Paul...but who's paying any attention to him anyway?)

By the way, here are the results of the top four candidates in the straw poll:

Romney: 1595
Huckabee: 1565
Paul: 865
Thompson: 564

Mike Huckabee is the REAL winner of the straw poll. Romney only received 99 votes from the Washington Briefing itself. He stacked the online voting by sending massive email blasts to his lists. Huckabee took 51% of the on-location voting to Romney's dismal 10%.

I'm a Jewish social conservative and I would have voted for Romney.

It´s not cheating; it´s called the Mormon Mafia.

Values voters are about alternatives to abortion, marriage between a man and a woman, and low taxes. In other words, values voters are about the very basis of a successful society, the family.

Mike Huckabee won this event hands down. Romney is a cheater and the FRC should be ashamed for giving this any merit.

Who is Ron Paul? I've never heard of him and I'm a Texan. My vote is with Romney!!

MitR Romney isn't the only one who made this poll a joke. Many Ron Paul blogs were also encouraging people to pay the buck to vote even though many don't give a hoot about christian moral values. They just want the Christians to join the Paul Bandwagon. Paul doesn't understand that God's law overides the laws of Men and the Constitution, that is why he supports legal gay civil unions and legalized prostitution. And he is wrong about allowing states to decide whether abortion should be legal. The Declaration of Independence grants Life as a God given right which cannot be taken away by Men. If Slavery were allowed to be a decision by the states, many Southern States would have voted to continue the practice after the Civil War. If Abortion goes to the States, Liberal States such as Illinois and New York would continue to allow the infanticide to continue, now over 40 million since Roe vs Wade.
If Paul wants this Christian's support he He needs to Make God his Lord and not the Constitution.
My vote goes to Alan Keyes

Huckabee ROCKS!

I LIKE MIKE!!!!

Mike Huckabee clearly won the straw poll.

On-site votes:
Mike Huckabee 488 51.26%
Mitt Romney 99 10.40%
Fred Thompson 77 8.09%
Tom Tancredo 65 6.83%
Rudy Giuliani 60 6.30%
Duncan Hunter 54 5.67%
John McCain 30 3.15%
Sam Browndback 26 2.73%
Ron Paul 25 2.63%
Undecided 11 1.16%
Not Voting 7 0.74%
Barack Obama 5 0.53%
Chris Dodd 2 0.21%
Dennis Kucinich 2 0.11%
Joe Biden 1 0.11%

Total 952 100%

Mike Huckabee for president!

Why did the Romney Campaign *need* to send out that e-mail? Because they know he has no moral fiber! He's like a chamelion - when he runs for senator against Ted Kennedy, he conveniently becomes pro-choice. When he runs for President, he becomes pro-life for political expediency. That's not conviction, it's not competance, it's HYPOCRISY! And Americans (at least those with true convictions) don't buy that.

I was in Washington for the Values Voters Summit.

When the MC announced Mike Huckabee as the next speaker the audience just exploded. The MC had to ask for us to sit down and be quiet so he could introduce Mike.

I hope you saw that Mike received more Votes from US who were there than all the other candidates combined - 51.26%
488 votes for Mike and 464 votes for all the other both Republican AND Democratic candidates.
I LIKE MIKE and so did a majority of all the Values Voters at Washington. !

cheating. stacking the online vote. serious charges.

look at the numbers.

Romney-1496 online votes (1595 total minus 99 on-site)

Huckabee- 1077 online votes (1565 total minus 488 on-site)

so do we have 2 cheaters? are there 2 candidates who were stacking the online vote?

GO MITT! Saw the crowds in FL for you this weekend....only top 4 candidates (That's why they called the get together "Presidency 4") got invited....could be reason most of us had to vote on the net.

Didn't see any Huckabee supporters? No McCain or many Thompson supporters in FL. Only Romney and some Rudy "rude" New Yorkers from South Florida.

Pick the strategic thinker and a man with a proven track record...honest and pure amazing...been in Military 30+ years, and we need some one with fresh ideas to take on the challenges for our USA's future.....Thanks Mitt!

YOU BE DA MAN!
Ralphie

If that is the best Romney can do with the "Values Voters", whether or not you agree with them, his boat is sunk. Millions of dollars, emailing your entire campaign list, bussing in several dozen supporters to clap for you, vote, and leave....and a close win (online) is the best you can do???

I was there in person, and Mike Huckabee won the straw poll hands down! The crowd went wild with his speech, and a lot of people I talked to afterwards were switching their support to Huckabee. Romney may have money and staff, but Huckabee has an incredible growing grassroots support that will be difficult to stop! Look out Iowa....

Join the growing grassroots campaign for the ONLY authentic, articulate conservative who has the momentum needed to win!

GO HUCKABEE!!!
