“The worst thing we could do is run up taxes as this economy is growing,’’ President Bush said today at a campaign-styled stump appearance in northwestern Arkansas. “You’re fixin’ to see what we call a fiscal showdown in Washington,’’ the president said to applause in Rogers, Ark.
The president’s approval rating may be 32 percent in the latest Gallup Poll taken Oct. 4-7 – and averaging 34 percent in the last three Gallup Polls – but there still are places where the White House can invite an audience and find ready applause for talk of cutting taxes and promises to veto any new ones. Including Rogers, Ark., where one veteran stood today and told the president that a lot of his friends wishes Bush could serve "another four years.''
The president wore long shirtsleeves and carried a hand-held microphone on the stage after a barbecue lunch at the "Whole Hog Cafe’’ and a tour of Stribling Packaging. He went short on a prepared speech and long on questions from the audience. He is headed from there today to a fundraiser for the Tennessee GOP in Memphis before returning to Washington this evening.
“One of the things a president has to do is travel around the country and explain why things are happening,’’ Bush said in Rogers.
“Mr. President, first of all, I’d like to commend you on your steadfastness and your faith and not letting anyone wavering you on your faith,’’ said a man in the crowd, a pre-school administrator.
"Mr. President,'' a young girl asked, "When do you think there will be a girl president for the Republican Party?''
"You took my line,'' Bush replied. "I think there will be lady president and she will be a Republican… I’ve seen women who are plenty capable of being president of the United States... and capable of making sure they stick to principle... One of the worst things you can do is chase a poll.''

Leaving the Whole Hog at a Rogers strip mall, a stone's throw from the Krispy Kreme, the president's motorcade to the convention center passed a mostly friendly or neutral crowd of onlookers, and a few "Impeachment Now" and anti-war signs.
The president, who hopes to sustain his veto of an greatly expanded State Children’s Health Insurance Program this week, delivered a lot of tough talk about fiscal irresponsibility at the convention center.
“I don’t know if the people in Rogers understand the calendar, but our fiscal year ended Sept. 30… and not one appropriations bill has reached my desk,’’ the president said, with repeated promises to veto excessive spending whenever it reaches that desk.
“There’s what’s called S-CHIP… a children’s heatlh insurance program. It made it to my desk and I vetoed it,’’ Bush said to some applause. “The House is going to decide whether they are going to sustain my veto,’’ he said – with that vote expected Thursday. And if the veto is sustained, he said, he will start working with leaders on a continuation of the S-CHIP program which he can support.
To the school administrator’s question about education and the government:
“We’re spending money, on the federal level, on public schools,’’ Bush said, “and it seems like it makes sense if we ask the quesetion if the money is being spent wisely.’’
A third-generation dairy farmer who milks 300 cows asked about immigration and ethanol.
“I’m guilty on promoting ethanol, and the reason why is it’s important in diversifying away from oil,’’ Bush said. “I promoted ethanl and still believe it’s important for the future…
“As you know, I’m a person who believes strongly in comprehensive immigration reform,’’ he said. “I agree with our citizens who say we’ve got to do a better job of enforcing the laws of the country… You’ve got a border for a reason… and I supported congressional efforts to modernize our border, and we are. It’s a long hard border to enforce.
“But I also recognize this,’’ he said. “You’ve got to have a program that will enable somebody to come here and work on a temporary basis… In order for us to have good border policy, it makes sense for us to have a temporary worker program… to do jobs that Americans aren’t willing to do…
“And then the big issue is, what are we going to do with the 11 million people already here.. You can’t kick ‘em out,’’ Bush said of his failed legislation which addressed all of these issues.
“It didn’t pass, and it’s a mistake that the Congress didn’t pass comprehensive immigration reform,’’ he said, which is why he has to go to Rogers, Ark., and answer questions about what he’s going to do about the problem.
A member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars who said he had sat “up front’’ when Bush addressed the VFW in Kansas City this year, told the president: “The straw poll throughout the room, sir, was we wish that you could run for another four years.''
“I can’t,’’ the president said. “It’s time for new blood.’’
“Thanks for saying it,’’ Bush said, noting that it’s impossible -- “Plus I’d be single.’’

The people in Rogers, Arkansas are like good people everywhere in the heartland they don't have to listen or believe the Burwash drivebys. President Bush has integrity and tenacity and doesn't put his finger up like Bill or Hil and wait for a focus group to tell them how the polls would go.
The President is winning the surge, unemployment is low, the stockmarket is high and interest rates are falling, a good economy and his tax cuts have the Treasury flush with money. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Dingy Reid would raise taxes 1 trillion dollars and ruin the economy. 06 was good for the Dems but, they'll find out the people are tired of the blatant use of power the Dems have used with over 650 oversight hearings and they don't effectively govern while drunk with keeping their power. The Republicans don't want to raise your taxes, they want to keep charging it to your credit card so your grandkids can worry about paying back China and not them.

President Bush could urinate on the cheerleaders of his incompetency and they will thank him and ask for more of the same. That's the sad lesson of blind allegiance.

Good point. I also find it notable that his daughter Jenna, who had the double misfortune of growing up (1) in Texas and (2) with this awful beast for a father, speaks like a perfectly intelligent person, sans nitwit drawl? Can't be that Georgie's twang is affected, can it?

Rogers, Arkansas? Bush is really having to dig deep in the backwaters to find any remaining pockets of support. And for the the buffoon that wished for another 4 years, why not just make him dictator-in-chief? An obvious hotbed of American intellect.

And that woman will be named Hillary Clinton.

Of course, Shrubby could have answered her question. But then of course, the answer would be 'never'. Same response for an African American Republican.

Reducing taxes is meaningless unless is accompanied by a corresponding reduction in spending. Otherwise, the government will merely rack up more debt.
The inverse is also true. Reduce spending and the need for taxation goes away.
The same is true for waste. Reduce waste and increase government efficiency and responsibility, and the need to tax to cover government shortfalls is reduced.
The above represents simple, common sense lessons from history. All of them have been lost on our President and Congress.

Yep, Jerry, I'm sure Karl Rove never used a focus group or research study. Him an' them other fellas would just amble down to the General Store, sit a spell and speak with the folks who come by.
Sure.

John E- I am with you on the republican spending- while a lot of that can be attributed to nat'security, Katrina and two wars- THe front running DEM candidate will dwarf that spending.
More importantly, you are ignoring the RECORD incoming tax receipt revenue that this administration is reponsible for- AFTER a tax cut..! How cool was that?

I know enough about GWB to suspect that having him for a father would be a disaster: pigheaded; alcoholic; arrogant; lacks compassion; dumb; a bully. Not the stuff of a great father.
I've lived in Chicago all my life and I've spend a good deal of time with Texans on business. I'll take Chicagoans every time (not to say that Texas is devoid of quality people -- it's just that they're long on morbidly overweight, gun toting, pickup truck driving morons).

Is it any wonder that Bush would be asked to address it?

Bush replied: "One of the worst things you can do is chase a poll."
Yeah, that "Of The Pepole, For The People and By The People" thing is so old fashioned.
Look at this arrogant dictator-in-chief's record and hypocrisy.
When the issue is gay marriage, and whenever he denies this group of Americans their constitutional rights (and Declaration of Independence for that matter, i.e. "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness"), all he ever says is "the will of the people" (read: polls!!).
And I am fully aware that Clinton signed the "defense of marriage act" and disgreed with him on the issue, as well.

I have seen you debating the issue of race here a couple of times. I have to ask......Why is it then that the democrats hold a large majority of the black vote? Could it be that they could see through the republican push to capture the south by luring voters with keeping civil rights as a state issue not federal?

Anyone who supports strapping future generations of Americans with the bill for this irresponsible, ill-advised and illegal invasion of Iraq is a horrible American citizen. Anyone who supported tax cuts while also supporting sending other people off to war is the epitome of the MOST IRRESPONSIBLE GENERATION in American history.
I love how it's these welfare states like Arkansas, Alabama and Mississippi, where idiots support these tax cuts when they're not even paying in the amounts they receive back in entitlements. I guess the way these bad citizens see it is that since they're already getting a tax handout provided by residents of other states, we'll likely be the ones paying for their irresponsibility (and sense of entitlement) down the road too.
It's time we got these "conservative" states off of blue-state-provided welfare and passed along the tax burden to the people who get the most government hand outs.
Posted by: Jim | October 15, 2007 4:37 PM
Bill R., the states should have the right to govern themselves. There are civil rights laws in all states. You must think that it's legal to go to southern states and beat up or kill black people. There already are federal laws that prosecutes anyone who denies someone thier civil rights.
Yeah, Bush is a hell of a swell guy. Just a regular Joe. Don't you wish you could go out and have a beer with him? Wow, that would be neat. Gee willikers. Yikes.

I for one am glad Bush got re-elected. If someone else had one, they would have been blamed for the mess in Iraq. I could just see him saying, "I would have won it by now." In a way I'd like to see him do another four years, for the same reason, but I don't think the world could survive it.

b,
Of course, you can't have a beer with GWB; He doesn't drink and can't hold his likker when he did. (Unless of course you want to end up in a fist fight or a DUI arrest.)
You would do better having a drink with John Kerry. He can at least hold a couple drinks, and has a much steadier hand on the trigger, literally.

I suppose there are a lot of 'good people' in Texas. Janis Joplin, Bill Moyers, SRV, and others come to mind.
I recall in the US Army meeting many southerners and liking them. In fact, best man and first witness were both sons of the South.
But in three years I never met a likable Texan. (I'm sure they exist,) They acted like they had something to prove.

It's funny how George always ends up digging into the deep rural South for support. Says a lot about the ignorance of his constituents. I've driven across the sand fly infested state of Arkansas and I can honestly say, that place is a hotbed of intellectual depravity. Plenty of sheep and lambs for King George. Scary that anyone would want ANY President not to step down after they have served. These people want a monarchy, not a Republic. Bush has systematically compromised the US Constitution with his abuse of power and it will only hurt our country's balance of power in the future. When is America going to stop enabling this abuse of Presidental power? And as for higher taxes, what about the $330,000 per minute cost of Bush's illegal war? Who is going to pay for that. I think the American people who put him in power should.
