NEW YORK -- With NYPD helicopters circling overhead, a few thousand Columbia University students sat out under the hot sun waiting for President Ahmadinejad, taking pictures with their cellphones, picnicking and chatting, in what had become a holiday atmosphere.
A group of sophomores, political science majors, debated the merits of allowing Ahmadinejad on campus. "It makes me so proud to be a student here," said Anna Couturier, a 19-year-old with a pierced tongue and strong opinions. "It's all about letting us get direct access to him, without being filtered through the media."
"But where do you draw the line?" asked her roommate, Danielle Ash. "We didn't let the military on campus because of the don't-ask-don't-tell policy."
The crowd of thousands reserved their most raucous, almost disbelieving applause came when their president, Lee Bollinger, began the program with a scathing introduction of Ahmadinejad, saying this was a chance to "confront the mind of evil." "Mr. President, you exhibit all the signs of a petty and cruel dictator," Bollinger said.
(See Ahmadinejad's full remarks at Columbia) and read on:
Ahmadinejad responded by saying, through an interpreter, that the students should be able to judge him for themselves, without what he called a "vaccination" in his introduction.
His speech was rambling and less provocative than usual, beginning with a long biblical defense of the importance of science and accusing "some groups" of "creating nonexistent enemies" in the name of security.
But the q-and-a quickly became heated, with students submitting questions on index cards that challenged him on everything from his view of Israel to homosexuality.
Ahmadinejad backtracked on his previous denial of the Holocaust, saying that while it happened, there was not enough research on it. "A number of European academics are in prison because they want to approach the subject from a different perspective," he said.
When pressed about the issue of punishment of homosexuals, he said: "In Iran we don't have homosexuals like in your country." As the audience jeered, he continued, "In Iran we do not have this phenomenon. I don't know who's told you that we have this."
Afterwards, the students seemed subdued, processing, almost stunned as they filed quietly off the yard.

There's something seriously wrong with this country if the class act at an event is Ahmadinejad.
Who is an idiot, by the way and pretty damn evil, but he doesn't really have the power to be a dictator.

Lee Bollinger. What a windbag!!! He made the Iranian guy seem reasonable by comparison.

You have a world leader (ostensibly) that
denies that homosexuals exist in his country , like here..
and
Struggles with the concept that the holocaust occured as we know it..
Class act? How do you get there?

Allowing Akmadinnerjacket to an event and then challenging him shows the world how strong we are.

Senator John McCain had an unanswerable observation on Columbia's double standards on open discourse.
"I still find it astonishing and astounding that Columbia University would welcome the president of a country that has not only dedicated itself to a policy of extinction of the state of Israel, but as he is speaking, most of the lethal and explosive devices are being exported from Iran into Iraq, endangering and taking the lives of brave Americans who are serving. Meanwhile, Columbia University's belief in free speech does not extend to Reserve Officers' Training Corps units being allowed on their campus to attract outstanding young men and women to serve in the military."
Columbia invites an Iranian dictator, but bans the ROTC. The Left-wing academic mind (?) at work ....

It is a fact that the Palestinians, including their ruling class, the Hussaini tribe, and the Jerusalem Mufti, a nazi close to Hitler, Goebbels and Himmler, are the determining cause of the Holocaust, by virtue of the international pressure they exerted to restrict and even stop immigration of European Jews to Palestine, before and during the nazi period. These Jews' only refuge (protected in principle by the British) was thus denied, resulting in millions of them to be exterminated in death camps.Palestinians were fully aware of the consequences of their anti-immigration policy and jubilated at the news of resulting jewish deaths. As of today, they fondly remember this strategy of theirs, and keep regretting that it has not been successful enough to make all Jews disappear for ever, as the Romans had envisaged before them, with the help of their german and syrian-"palestinian" mercenary legions.
I simply cannot understand why nobody stresses these well-known facts. Of course Ahmadinedjad knows them as well, but capitalizes on their being widely ignored or deliberately hushed.
Mr.Bollinger appeared to be the only totally ignorant and illiterate individual in this meeting, when he stated that Ahmadinejad's position is defensible and that he respects it as having some merit.
Well, Ahmadinedjad's claim that the Palestinians have nothing to do with the Holocaust, and only suffer from its consequences, is not defensible, and it does not have any merit.
The Palestinians are responsible for the death of the Holocaust Jews. Had they even allowed them to take refuge in such a small area as the Gaza strip, millions of them would not have died, and... the Gaza strip could have become the State of Israel. But their hatred and cruelty and ingrained fanaticism led them to blockade Palestine entry, resulting in a much larger and mightier State of Israel.
Just one example:
Would Walter Benjamin have died if he had had a chance to being admitted in Palestine, and allowed to join his friend and colleague Gershon Sholem at the Jerusalem University?
And there are millions of similar cases. The nazis wanted to chase the Jews away. The Palestinian blockade strategy (entertained by the British) left no alternative to the German except the"Final Solution". Consequently, the "Palestinians" are the ones responsible for the Holocaust. They are the real culprits.
A disturbing reality.

I guess its roll-out time for the Iran War. I'm at the edge of my seat to see if the President will seek a war authorization, or make the case that the post-September 11 legislation gives him carte blanche to take any action he pleases against any nation whether its connected to 9/11 or not.
Hey heartburn, are you going to sign up for enlistment if we choose to invade Iran? Would you be willing to pay higher taxes to support the war, or institute a draft? If Iran turns out as bad or worse than our Iraq adventure, would that be an improvement over the status quo? How many American and Iranian lives would be worth losing to set back Iran's nuclear program 10 years? (note: it won't end it, because Iranians almost universally believe they have the right to nuclear technology) How are we going to effect regime change in Iran better than we did in Iraq, when Iran's population, after the mass exodus in Iraq, is nearly 3 times the size of their neighbor, where, last time I checked, our troops are currently bogged down in a civil war? Will we use nuclear weapons to stop them from getting nuclear weapons?
If we attack Iran, there will need to be a draft and taxes will need to be raised to pay for the enormous expenditure. Maybe speaking of the pocketbook will help focus the mushy-headed fantastical minds of NeoCons like heartburn, Bruce and Dyslin.

Well I applaud Columbia for having the President of Iran over. I know all you out there have some skewed view of the world where we are the ones who pick and choses who deserves to carry what title based on what merit but the REAL world does not work that way. Kudos for the institution that would rise above politics to allow their students (future foreign leaders) to experience who or what they they will have to deal with once they get out into the world and see that the highly publicized glitzy photo ops are only the tip of the iceberg; it is NOT all that is cracked up to be and you WILL be subjected to opposing sometimes socially and religiously motivated points of views. They got their exposure and I'm am pretty certain that that exposure will highlight amany debate in the department bringing issues to light and truth.

Let's hear it for Terry who'd prefer that the military continue to recruit for wars against so called terrorist states, clearly against homosexuality, refusing to acknowledge homosexuality themselves; opting for the safe don't ask and don't tell. Way to win that war ..... on human rights, women, and gays you were squawking about for in another thread. I guess Columbia sees that the US has an obligation first to its own who will fight the fight in order to get through to others. Otherwise I don't see the sense in fighting for homosexuality out there when their existence remains unconfirmed out here in the institution that will do that fighting; apparently that phenomena of homosexuality is excluded from our military and Iran (for different reasons but the bottom line remains the same). Will the military change its mind? No the apologistas have it covered. Dangerous to acknowledge gays and promote tolerance in the military. I don't expect Iran a theocracy (headed by religiouse principles) to change their mind either.

Wow your country is full of freaks. Look at this guy above "the palestinians caused the holocaust" he's as mad as Ahdmeninijhad. There are a great many people arguing for Mass murder of muslims these days. AND THEY ARE CARRYING IT OUT.
One thing though - The president of Iran never started a war with anyone. Bush started 2. And wants another. Bush has a "policy of extinction" (as McCain puts it) of Iran, North Korea and Iraq. AND HE's in the process of CARRYING IT OUT.
I fail to understand, as do much of the population of the rest of the world - why the booing crowds are not out in front of the whitehouse instead of this clownish sideshow.

Lee Bollinger did a great job here.
Expose the silly little man for what he is...a bigot.
Claims made by him just expose what he is and that is a hate filled ignorant leader put in power by the relious order in Iran.
I personally think that exposing him will work wonders while he tries to become more moderate to secure his bomb.
Let's not be fooled and let's not let him get his bomb.

John D,
You missed the whole point of it.
Many Americans are so ignorant about the rest of the world that the administration could probably get away with claiming the 'Iraf War' a success.
You do 'get' that Iraf is not a 'real' country, and The Onion is fake news?
Posted by: C.Morris | September 24, 2007 10:24 PM
I really don't know much about Ahmadinejad. What I do know has been processed and filtered through the MSM. I have only heard negatives about this man, and Iran, on TV snips from Bush, Cheney, Lieberman, Lindsey G. and McCain. When I have heard these republicans (and the one pretend dem), I have heard the beating of war drums behind their words. I wanted to hear what Ahmadinejad the man had to say today. Go to the source. I think, though, that the spirit of his speech today was undermined by Lee Bollinger, president of Columbia. Bollinger was not a gracious host, and I believe he was playing to the protesters and to those who donate to the University. I did not see a sword in Ahmadinejad's hand today. I did see, however, Bollinger skewer his guest like a weasel.
I do not want war with Iran. We need to keep talking. I also do not want to be prodded into someone else's war - such as Israel, or another mid-east country. We don't have the heart anymore, or the resourses for another fight. Yo, mid-east countries- its time to grow up and put up for your own battles and security. Quit hiding behind the (at one time) big kid on the block- letting him (us) get bloodied and drained. Drink from your own teats, or go get help from a country whose dollar is worth more than America's- like Canada, England, and all the EU countries. Sorry, but Bushenomics has totally ruined us as a nation. Our pockets are empty and turned inside out. America needs some time to replenish herself.

You have many people in the USA that deny the murder of 6 million jewish people also. This man is an elected President who has to face the problems of his own country before those of Israel. But there is no doubt that close to a million people and their children were forced off their land by the State of Israel.

Try reading the Iranian president's entire speech. Unless you are completely illiterate or hopelessly deranged you will notice he was truthful in many respects. Iran never bothered anyone outside it's borders, and does not want its women and children maimed and slaughtered by self-righteous and deluded american savages. It is a society rich in culture which it has a right to live without interference from warmongering and hypocritical outsiders. What right do you have to insert these warped murdering judgments on Iran? The worst slander is seen from a nation of immorality and racism that pillages and slaughters hundreds of thousands of women and children in selfish preemptive resource wars, threatens the world with WMDs that would fry the planet 100 times over, has the honor of maintaining a prison system with the highest prison population in the world and which operates like a multibillion dollar slave industry that executes convicts every day, most of them black and many proved innocent after the fact. Americans have appointed a brain damaged psychopath to the white house who has bankrupted their economy with a crippling debt of trillions that is mostly owned by Asia. The Iranian president was much too kind in his speech. American has descended into a cesspool of degradation full of barbarism and ignorance. And it calls itself a democracy?

They both sounded like they escaped from a mental ward. Speaking of mental wards, when did John D get out. Perhaps they give patients accessibility to computers in the insane asylum where he either resides, or has fled from!
Someone get all three of these nuts some help!

Who are they kidding? They applauded him...they didn't stand up to him except for Bollinger attempt (who knows his butt is being fried in the academic world over this fiasco). What a bunch of woosie cats.
Please don't do America any more favors kiddies.

How did Bollinger's remarks play in Iran?
As could be predicted by anyone except a ivory tower Liberal, the state-run Iranian news agencies made sure Iranians didn't hear his remarks.
So much for any "dialogue" or "debate" with the dictator.
From the Islamic Republic News Agency:
"Despite entire US media objections, negative propagation and hue and cry in recent days over IRI President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's scheduled address at Colombia University, he gave his lecture and answered students questions here on Monday afternoon.
On second day of his entry in New York, and amid standing ovation of the audience that had attended the hall where the Iranian President was to give his lecture as of early hours of the day, Ahmadinejad said that Iran is not going to attack any country in the world.
Before President Ahamadinejad's address, Colombia University Chancellor in a brief address told the audience that they would have the chance to hear Iran's stands as the Iranian President would put them forth.
He said that the Iranians are a peace loving nation, they hate war, and all types of aggression.
Referring to the technological achievements of the Iranian nation in the course of recent years, the president considered them as a sign for the Iranians' resolute will for achieving sustainable development and rapid advancement.
The audience on repeated occasion applauded Ahmadinejad when he touched on international crises.
At the end of his address President Ahmadinejad answered the students' questions on such issues as Israel, Palestine, Iran's nuclear program, the status of women in Iran and a number of other matters."

As flaming liberal Patrick Buchanan said this weekend, its time for America to grow up and act like a real superpower. Enough of this childhood snubbing. Let the man speak.
Why are conservatives so freakin' afraid of everything? I thought you guys were supposed to be the tough ones?
Dialogue is beneficial for national security, even if it requires dealing with unsavory characters. Whether we like it or not, Ahmenidinajad is the ELECTED leader of Iran. The invasion of Iran cannot be justified on the basis of installing democracy, they already have one, however imperfect.
Attacking Iran would be an insane, counter-productive measure that would make the Iraq War look like child's play. Besides, whose going to fight this war, and whose going to pay for it?
Posted by: Distrust and Verify | September 25, 2007 11:00 AM
I am sorry, but the media hypes Ahmenidinajad just like they hype everything else with their bs agenda (be afraid be very afraid!!!). I am not denying that the guy is a nutjob. It's just that G.W. Bush is more of a nutjob than Ahmenidinajad and he has the power to destroy the planet 100 times over. At least Ahmenidinajad has the spine to address a hostile crowd. Have you ever seen G.W. do that? I didn't think so, he is a ninny. I don't like Bush or Ahmenidinajad, but Ahmenidinajad is the better man.
Posted by: The Decider | September 25, 2007 12:55 PM
I just want to make it crystal clear- Ahmadinejad is the ELECTED President of Iran. He may be petty and cruel but he is not a Dictator by the traditional definition of the word. He's not even the power center in that country- the mullahs still run the show.
