She doesn't want to ask, but it sure sounds like Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton wants her $850,000 back.
Clinton confirmed today that she is open to re-collecting the money that her campaign is returning to donors who were solicited by convicted businessman Norman Hsu, but she said she was not overtly making such a request.
"I'm not predicting that. We are not asking that that be done," Clinton said. "But I believe the vast majority of those 200-plus donors are perfectly capable of making up their own minds of what they will or won't do going forward."
Clinton made her comments during a conference call with reporters to discuss a fund-raiser scheduled for Wednesday night at the Bethesda, Maryland home of Weldon Latham, a Brooklyn-born attorney who defends corporate clients facing discrimination charges.
Clinton staffers arranged the conference call to talk about diversity and the candidate's appeal to minority communities (Latham is black), and urged reporters to stick to those topics.
Nonetheless, rules were bent and Clinton was compelled to address the larger fund-raising question hovering over her campaign.
The Clinton campaign has said it would return about $850,000 in donations to 260 donors whose contributions were bundled by Hsu, who burst onto the political scene a few years ago, became a leading Democratic fundraiser and is now an embarrassment to Clinton's campaign.
Hsu, who failed to appear for sentencing in a 1992 fraud conviction, recently turned himself in to California authorities, fled the state and was recaptured. He has been hospitalized in Colorado and his fund-raising activities are now the subject of an FBI inquiry.
Continuing questions about Hsu come as Clinton's campaign tries to keep pace with Sen. Barack Obama in the race for Democratic dollars. To boost those efforts, former President Bill Clinton is scheduled to join his wife at tonight's event in Maryland.
Latham was a fund-raiser for Al Gore's 2000 presidential campaign, including hosting an event featuring Bill Cosby.
Latham said having the former president attend tonight, instead of Cosby, is "a real coup."
"A lot of people think he is extremely entertaining," Latham said.
David Nitkin reports in Washington for the Baltimore Sun, a Tribune Co. newspaper.

Oh, please, John D, Bruce, call your GOP handlers and tell them to attack Hillary with everything they have if she gets any of that tainted money back.
Tell them to get Rovian on her. I know for a fact she has an illegitimate black child that she sold to Martha Stewart!
Attack!@!@!!

RNC Bruce, Lil Johnny Dittohead,
Man the battle stations, commence firing, ATTACK ATTACK!

Now there's an accomplishment. The husband of The Odious One will help in fund raising.
I wonder what, or who, is in it for Bill.

Thanks whatnow, I just spit coffee out of my nose all over my keyboard. Funny stuff!

These attacks are expected because Hillary is the frontrunner. No suprise.
Posted by: lylepink | September 12, 2007 3:57 PM
Clinton? Dirty money!?! NO WAI!!!
*rolleyes* If you buy the campaign line that she's a squeaky clean financial unit, pass me whatever in the heck you're smoking, because it must be REALLY good.

These attacks are expected because she is Hillary Clinton and we all know her and we all hate her and we are all pulling for her to lose.

So what, if the donors elect to re-donate to Hillary. It's called the First Amendment, Swamp.
She has every right to accept legitimate donations.

The latest polls from Iowa, NH, and SC has Hillary leading 5%, 19%, and 18%.

Do you notice that most of the people commenting on this thread aren't wingnuts? Do you see Bruce or John D saying anything? Do you know why? They want Hillary to be the Dems nominee. She would not only be the worst President of all the people (with the possible exception of Romney) running for President, but she would also be the worst nominee for the democrats.
I haven't picked a favorite yet, I have picked least favorites. As long as it isn't Romney vs Hillary in the general election I will be happy.
Posted by: nisleib | September 12, 2007 4:19 PM
Earth to bigdawg, the problem is those weren't legitimate donations. You see Mr. Hsu would give Family A thousands of dollars to donate to candidates such as Hillary and to the DNC. That's how a family earning $49,000 can donate $40,000 to Dem candidates and the DNC. Hillary has been in cahoots with Mr. Hsu. Just more campaign nonsense from the Clintons and Chinese operatives.

What a racist statement!

John D is right, and he illustrates one of the many reasons why Hillary would be an ineffective leader of this great country.
1) She has a lot of baggage that her husband will hand down to her. Like it or not, fair or not, it is a reality. The sins of her husband will be hers.
2) The GOP will hound her! She will be to busy defending herself to every bridge the gapping political chasm between left and right. If you thought Bush was polarizing wait until you see Hillary Clinton. The GOP will figure out a way to reanimate Vincent Foster's corpse just so they can reenact how she killed him with her throwing star/prada bag combo.
3) We don't know for a fact what the deal was with Hsu and the families making 49K and donating 40K to Hillary but my guess is John D is nailing this one on the head. I'd even go a step farther and say, given the huge amount of money involved, that Hillary knew exactly who she was taking money from. Can I prove it? No. But that goes to point #1 & 2 above; she doesn't get the benefit of the doubt. It's not that she hasn't earned it, it's that she's already lost it.

I didn't mean it to be racist. Rovian - as of or like what Rove would do.
This is referring to what Rove did to McCain in the 2000 primary. Remember when Rove claimed McCain had an illegitimate black child???
If I offended you I apologize.

The reason hate people like Hillary is because one day she goes in front of the NAACP or a group like that and tells them how she's fighting for the rights of minorities, then before you know it she's having a fundraiser hosted by an uncle Tom Brother who has sold out his people and uses the color of his skin to win cases for corporations that discriminate. I never voted for a Republican in my life and though I might vote for a Republivcan someday for some good reason, I'll never consider taking two steps to vote for Hillary even if she was running to be the official dogcather of New York. If the Dems nominate a scammer, quasi-republican like Hillary, screw those idiots in 2008.

I am sick of the Libune and all the fluff stories of Obama and Clinton. When will they start talking about the Hsu controversy?

Well said, bravo, well said. Again, hillary's true colors continue to grow. hillary is on the ballot because her last name is clinton. I will repeat myself many times, but she is the worst candidate we have to choose from. She is not clean, she is not moral, she is not qualified. I have voted rep, I have voted dem, I have even voted ind a time or two, but I will write in my cats name before I vote for hillary.

Marko, woe to me to defend the Swamp, but there have been a few Richard Hsu stories. Course, they aren't as hard-hitting if it were Republicans involved and of course, the Hsu story only merits coverage in the campaign digest section of the Tribune.
Posted by: John D | September 12, 2007 5:17 PM
Marko & John D
I don't really find any of the stories all that hard hitting. Should there be more Hsu stories? Certainly, bring them on!
The comments are hard hitting, not the articles. And we bring up Hsu in the comments all the time.
Posted by: nisleib | September 12, 2007 5:47 PM
When are the Tribune and other media going to ask for a list of those 250 donors who contributed almost a million dollars?
Be prepared to wait until Hell freezes over, to paraphrase a Democrat who was a real Democrat, Adlai Stevenson.
Posted by: Harry T. | September 12, 2007 6:15 PM
Nisleib, the Norman Hsu (I incorrectly called him Richard before) stories are not hard hitting.
Anyway, you are like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. One minute you want more Norman Hsu stories to get Hillary, and the next you laugh at the partisan stuff and say we're being too tough on Hillary and the Dems. Which is it?
Posted by: John D | September 12, 2007 7:16 PM
nisleib: I think you may be half happy or angry because from my reading of the process, Hillary will be the dems choice, and I think she will win in 08 no matter her repub opponent. We should know by early February the choice of each party.

"GOP STILL IN RED PLEASE SEND MONEY"
The GOP cannot get George Bush or Dick Cheney to cough up some of that 9 billion dollars that the TREASURER SECRETARY PAULSON HAS YET TO BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR and have tapped into every White House server they can to retrieve all emails they can on any Democrats is getting ridiculous.
AMERICA GIVE ME 60 BILLION DOLLARS AND I WILL......LET YOU KNOW IN MARCH 2008.
John McCain, Tancredo, willing to reach in the hands of the PUBLIC MONEY COFFERS to continue their tyrant bids for the Presidency.
Bush Administration all of sudden can follow a paper trail. All of sudden his administration is not doing the daily business of america (EAVESDROPPING, WIRE TAPPING, AVOIDING CONGRESSIONAL SUBPOENAS, CAGING BLACK VOTES, CAGING MILITARY ABROAD VOTERS, but backtracking donations, by donation.
People need to take heed to this type of muckracking by criminals on live television.
Newt Gingrich, Tom Delay Live on Sunday Morning is what this and THE VOICES BUSH HEARS spew out at us on Spectacular Mondays.
You can agree or disagree and that may make it okay, but......Aren't you tired of PAID PROGRAMMING only in your town. WHERE IS KEN MEHLMAN AT WHEN YOU NEED A PHONE OR PROGRAM JAMMER WHEN YOU NEED ONE.

ComeOn, and here I thought you had something on the ball.....

Biggdawg (from some unearthly place I suppose) to John D (on earth I suppose):
Hillary has returned (or is returning) the donations. She didn't have to. As far as I know, the Federal Elections Commission has yet to cite Hillary or anyone on her campaign staff for malfeasance in connection with this Hsu affair.
It won't. We all know that because, despite the inexplicable, deep-seated hatred many harbor against Hillary, these two facts remain inescapable: (i) SHE DID NOTHING WRONG, and (ii) SHE DID NOTHING UNETHICAL. Hopeful, spiteful, swiftboat-esque innuendo to the contrary will not erase those truths.
I would hold the same sentiment aout any of the republican candidates as well; well, maybe not as passionate. Sadly, crooks are intrinsic to the political process. No candidate, democrat or republican, can completely avoid associating with them, knowingly or otherwise. So cut the silly, "Ken Starr" crap. Hillary and Barack get a pass on this because they didn't know, much less were they complicit.
So bottom line, if these donors merely served as pass-throughs, uninterested in Hillary, then I suppose they won't donate to her upon the return of the money, and those who wish Hillary ill in her fundraising efforts can take heart -- little though that might be. But if the donors elect, of their own volition, to donate to Hillary's campaign nonetheless, well, then the Constitution guarantees that right -- at least it does in this unearthly world in which I apparently now reside and which seems eerily similar to my United States of America by the way.
But I suspect all the negative press, hyperbole and the fear of imaginary legal sanction has chilled these individuals' desire to participate in the process altogether, unfortunately. No, rabid Hillary haters, I'm guessing Hillary won't come out completely whole at all in terms of recouping the contributions she returned. So rejoice, tepidly.
Oh and Nisleib, you've vetted your choices among the candidates in this race on both sides of aisle. I've done the same. We obviously disagree. Fundamentally.

John D -
you are like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. One minute you want more Norman Hsu stories to get Hillary, and the next you laugh at the partisan stuff and say we're being too tough on Hillary and the Dems. Which is it?
Well, both sides have sneaky fund raisers who funnel money to their campaigns. Duh. But Hsu gave funneled loads of money to Hillary. I am all for attacking Hillary, especially for something I have no doubt she is guilty for. I can't stand hillary, that should be obvious. One of the reasons I liked McCain in 2000 was his tough stance on campaign finance reform. I think the corruption of the system as a whole is one of the most important issues are country faces. Until we fix the system we will continue to make poor choices based on what's best for donors instead of what's best for the country.
John E -
Are you telling me that you could support a Rudy Julieannie or Grandpa Fred Presidency?
ComeOn, and here I thought you had something on the ball.....
Well, John E, if my choice was Hillary or Fred or Guiliani, hillary would not get my vote. Maybe there will be a third party candidate, maybe Fred is worth voting for, maybe Guiliani isn't that bad, I really haven't decided. The only way I can see myself voting for Hillary is if the GOP nominates Romney.

Norman Hsu got on a chartered jet with his passport. Typed a suicide letter and sent it to numerous charities and acquaintances, then boarded a train in order to have some much needed privacy for hsuicide.
Pretty much a textbook suicide case so far...
Just a few points about the missing 40 million...
1. Hsu told Source Financial the money was to manufacture clothes for Gucci & Prada in China. Neither company manufactures any items in China, ever.
2. Source Financial never noticed that Hsu's businesses didn't exist before loaning him money. They also failed to check his background, or look for a factory in China connected to Hsu.
3. Source Financial was accepting checks post dated by 135 days as payment on their huge loans to Hsu.
4. Source Financial employees are also big Hillary donors.
5. Hillary set aside 1 million dollars of taxpayer money for a "Woodstock" museum. The head of Source Financial was a major Woodstock promoter and also a long time Clinton friend.
6. It took 2 weeks for the head of Source Financial to realize there might be some kind of connection between his company, Clinton, and Hsu.
7. One of the recipients of Hsu's suicide note googled the term "Hsu Suicide" BEFORE anyone knew where he was or what he was doing - according to Michelle Malkin.
These are just a few of the latest strange facts in this case.

John D,
Is your campaign cash list accurate? I just put it in a spreadsheet, and even though the total is around 850K (actually a little over 900K), only 96K was contributed to Hillary Clinton. The rest went to other candidates over three years. The average of the 44 donations to Hillary was under $2,200. All this fuss over less than 100K? No wonder she didn't know about it.
Posted by: Tim S | September 13, 2007 12:27 PM
John D,
Sorry. Make that $79,400. Still curious about the accuracy of your list.

Let me 'explain' to those who say Hillary's opponents 'hatred' for her (not my choice of words) is "inexplicable". Ever heard of NAFTA? Since it was passed I have had almost no choice amongst products to buy, and they all break almost instantly. How much damaga to the environment occurs when I buy a new hair dryer every year and throw the old one in a landfill. Instead of buying one quality item every 20 years or so, we have to replace every single item in our house once a year. Do the people on the left think that producing 20 hair dryers as opposed to one is a good thing?? Nevermind that it has been nothing but an assault on wages of workers worldwide. So-called leftist are nothing but a bunch of closet Bushies. Anyone who isn't on Wallmart's Board, who supports Hillary and calls themself a progressive, is nothing but a phony!
