President Bush, who will travel to Minneapolis on Saturday, also will devote his weekly radio address to the catastrophe there.

The White House typically withholds the text of that address until its airing on radio programs across the country on Saturday mornings. But, eager to get word out about Bush's concern for the situation, the White House released the text this afternoon.

"In times of tragedy, our hearts ache for those who suffer,'' Bush will say in that radio address, "yet our hearts are also lifted by acts of courage and compassion.''

First Lady Laura Bush made her own Minneapolis inspection today:

This is the text of the radio address which the president will deliver Saturday:

"Good morning. Today, I am traveling to Minneapolis to the site of Wednesday's tragic bridge collapse. Like millions of Americans, I was shocked and saddened when I heard the news that the I-35 bridge gave way during rush hour. The bridge was a major traffic artery, and when it collapsed dozens of cars fell into the Mississippi River.

Laura and I join all Americans in mourning those who lost their lives and in sending our thoughts and prayers to their families. And we pray that those injured will make a full recovery.

On Thursday morning, Transportation Secretary Mary Peters and Federal Highway Administrator Richard Capka traveled to Minneapolis. They announced $5 million in immediate federal funding for debris removal and to help restore the flow of traffic. This is just the beginning of the financial assistance we will make available to support the state in its recovery efforts. Several federal agencies are on the ground aiding state and local officials, including the National Transportation Safety Board, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Coast Guard, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

I recognize how important the I-35 bridge is to the state of Minnesota, and my administration is committed to working closely with Governor Pawlenty and Mayor Rybak to rebuild this bridge as quickly as possible.

In times of tragedy, our hearts ache for those who suffer, yet our hearts are also lifted by acts of courage and compassion. We saw those qualities in the residents of a nearby apartment building who rushed to the scene to offer their help. We saw them in the divers who fought the mighty currents of the Mississippi to reach victims. And we saw them in the firefighters who searched car to car for survivors.

Among the survivors was a group of kids returning from a summer field trip. Their school bus had just passed over the Mississippi River, when the bridge below them gave way. The bus dropped more than 20 feet and came to rest on the guardrail of the collapsed bridge span. A staff member named Jeremy Hernandez quickly swung into action. He broke open the backdoor and helped evacuate the terrified children to safety. The mother of one of the children on board credited Jeremy's presence of mind with helping spare her daughter from tragedy. She put it this way: "I don't know what he was thinking but it must have been something really good."

Our country is fortunate to have brave and selfless citizens like Jeremy, and all those who risked their own safety to aid in the rescue. This is a difficult time for the community in Minneapolis, but the people there are decent and resilient, and they will get through these painful hours. As they do, they know that all of America stands with them, and that we will do all we can to help them recover and rebuild.

May God bless those who are hurting in Minneapolis, and may God bless our wonderful country. Thank you for listening.''

He doesn't address the real issue at all: our aging underfunded infrastructure.

This isn't about the I-35w bridge. It's about the thousands of other structurally deficient bridges spread out all across america. It's about maintaining all of our vital national infrastructure.

How bout a little heartache for the thousands dying in Iraq every month?

You're right Tony. But our friends like Brucie,Little Johnny and Beany Boy,received those big tax cuts.

That's really what's important, more money for me me me me me me me.

Funny,no complaints about all the wasted tax dollars in Iraq.

More than 70,000 bridges across the country are rated structurally deficient like the span that collapsed in Minneapolis and engineers estimate repairing them all would take at least a generation and cost more than $188 billion, The Associated Press reports.

There's no money to fix bridges, but yet Bush has stolen $500B from my children's future to fund his war in Iraq.

Bush's priorities are out of synch with America.

Bush: "Our Hearts Ache For Those Who Suffer"

Tell that to the people of NOLA, President Earboy.

I haven't read any accounts of the New York City steam pipe explosion in conjunction with the Minnesota trajedy, as a folow up to the New Orleans levee breach.

Our infrastructure is falling apart. Let's fix it and give some Americans some work while we do it.

This is a win/win - need/need good idea in the best interest of all Americans.

As shown on the BTS link I provided yesterday, the work is getting done.

My ability to keep more of my hard earned money is totally irrelavent to this issue.

The federal DOT Budget is over $60 Billion. I think there is plenty of money. Maybe if there was less of this money used for walking and bike paths (which I like) and more used to maintain the existing infrastructure, this would not have happened. Unfortuately, DOT money gets hnded out like candy to the Congressman for their pet projects (Bridge to Nowhere). It's not always spent wisely. The fact is there is plenty of money, its the allocation of it that needs work.

Here are acouple of examples I found

"Our hearts ache for those who suffer... unless they happen to be on the receiving end of one of our 'smart' bombs. Then they are terrorists and they will not win."

Sorry you sicko libs, but Bush and Iraq have nothing to do with a 40 year old bridge collapsing in Minneapolis.
Nice try though!

Mr.Prez, rescind those tax cuts for Rush Limprod who makes 35 million a year.

I'm sure he can afford his oxycontin and pecker pills.

Re-build our nations roads and bridges.Don't ignore it like 9/11 and New Orleans.

Rescind the tax cuts - take back that Child Tax Credit to $500, demolish the 10% tax bracket, shorten-up the 15% tax bracket. Increase the price of American capital so we can destroy jobs in this country and reduce the tax revenues.

Crazy Duck, go read about the Luxury Tax of 1990 and the lessons learned from that fiasco of taxing the rich.

Only an unhinged liberal nutcase would exploit a national tragedy to take cheap shots at Bush.

Hedrbie, unhinged liberal nutcase is one big oxymoron. Most liberals are unhinged and most are nutcases. Most definitely need medication and institutionalizing.

Such valid points. Only wish people would listen to what you say here!
