President Bush, following a meeting with his Cabinet at the White House this morning, delivered his first public comments about the collapse of a highway bridge in Minnesota.
"One of the things we discussed was the terrible situation there in Minneapolis,'' Bush said in a statement delivered in the Rose Garden. "We talked about the fact that the bridge collapsed, and that we in the federal government must respond and respond robustly to help the people there not only recover, but to make sure that lifeline of activity, that bridge, gets rebuilt as quickly as possible.
"To that end, (Transportation) Secretary Peters is in Minneapolis, as well as Federal Highway Administrator Capka,'' Bush said. "I spoke to Gov. Pawlenty and Mayor Rybak this morning. I told them that the secretary would be there.
"I told them we would help with rescue efforts, but I also told them how much we are in prayer for those who suffered,'' the president said. "And I thank my fellow citizens for holding up those who are suffering right now in prayer.''

"I thank my fellow citizens for holding up those who are suffering right now in prayer.''
Holding up those who are suffering? What does this mean????
How about some accountability, W? Not just prayers!

Yes, prayer will help the people of Minneapolis just like it did the people of New Orleans, and the people of Kansas City, and the people of New York, and the people of Iraq....

Seems that the $TRILLION projected cost of the future US involvement in Iraq could be put to better use rebuilding our infrastructure at home, among other domestic needs.

We need a president, not a pope. People of honest faith are demeaned by self-serving efforts from the White House to play cheerleader-in-chief for mass prayers.

But wait.
We've given half a trillion to the Iraqis, and it looks like Bush (and then Hillary) are prepared to spend up to at least a trillion, perhaps several trillion more. And Congress is too scared of looking
weak on terror to do anything about it. Even if the Iraq occupation does nothing to protect us from terror. Even if the Iraqis are ripping us off big time.
So...I guess that means no money for bridge repair, even bridges deemed by the feds as "structurally unsound." Osama must be chuckling. We're destroying ourselves. Part of his long-term plan for the infidel, no doubt.
We must be among the most generous nations in history. We aren't just giving our young people's lives to the Iraqis. We're giving them trillions from our national treasury even if that means we'll soon be too scared to drive over most of our bridges. Now that's charity.

So, please, tell me about all of the appropriations by the great President Clinton that were delivered to help repair the "structurally unsound" bridges across our great land. Guess what: transportation bills are bipartisan in nature. If there is a failure here, it is the failure of congress to push for transportation bills with funding for bridge repairs. Grow up and look beyond your liberal hatred for President Bush and realize that yesterday was a tragedy--quit placing blame when we don't even know what caused the collapse.

Yes Mr. President, we have confirmed it is a predominantly white and wealthy area. We'll got on it right away.
New Orleans: Your still on your own

I'm with you guys. Bush made that bridge collapse. He took all the bridge funds and I think he gave them to Halliburton. No bridge for oil. Bush did that to the bridge because he never liked Minnesota drivers. I'm only surprised he didn't create another hurricane to do it. I'm a completely unhinged idiot, relying on the twin pillars of liberalism - whining and hysterics. That was my first liberal rant - how did I do?

The bridge was built in 1967, it was inspected in 2005. The recommendation was to have the bridge replaced in the near future. The work being done was not structural work it was road surface and side rail work. Our good Governor Plenty vetoed our highway repair spending bill; the ink is not even dry on the veto. This is another case of our republican leaders with their, suck it dry and leave an empty shell government style. We must use the money for our corporate welfare programs (no bid contracts).
This should get some attention when you see the photos of the school bus on the collapsed bridge leaning against the guard rail. How many of you have children that must cross a bridge to get to school?????????? Maybe we should put our tax money to work in the correct places!!!!!!!!!!! It will take two years to replace that bridge, what do you think that will do to the local economy?????? How will they get their goods across the river now?????
When you run a business do you let your production equipment fall apart before you do any work on it????? Or do you do preventative maintenance?????
All I can say is Governor Plenty, those people on the bridge yesterday had to pay plenty for your veto!!!!!!!!! But you are so busy playing bush lapdog you failed the people of the state of Minnesota. If you do not want to move this state forward you should step down and let some one who has the best interest of the people of the state of Minnesota in mind!!!!!

Once again, our Sorcerer in Chief failed to protect his citizens from a disaster that should have been easily foreseen.

"it only took this NeoClown how long to "Blame it on Clinton"......
Very original.
Sorry "Original BZ"--I never placed blame on anyone--my comment pointed out the idiocy trying to blame any one person here--something that your liberal cohorts are unable to grasp. Clinton is no more at fault than Bush. Period.

Tax cuts for the rich.
Debt for the middle class.
No money for infrastructure.
1 trillion for NATION BUILDING.

Oh Boy.. Here we go again, our Government, trying to make it right. This will be great. Don't you think they learned a lesson from Katrina & Iraq?? NO. I do not think anyone is that smart in the "Peoples House" to make anything right. PERIOD

Ah the maniacal rantings from the Loony Left.
We don't know the cause, but we'll blame first. Just like the Loony Left did with the Duke Lacrosse team!
Herbie, great job on the Loony Left rant.
And I love how Bush gets crucifed by offering a prayer for those who lost their lives and the families affected by this tragedy. Again, when Clinton offered prayers, he was our "great daddy in chief." When Bush does it, he is a slobbering Bible Thumper.
Really, Loons, just take the cyanide and put yourselves out of your perpetual misery!

I'll reserve my judgement until the cause of the accident is revealed. As I've said, I don't blame Bush or Clinton. Radical liberals, however, seem unable to blame anybody other than Bush.
In your case, Mr. "BZ", I think it's clear that your capacity for Bush-hating exceeds your ability to process reason and logic.

After viewing the video of the actual bridge collapse on the web, it fails at the transition point where the span attaches to the piers. The reason it failed at this point is because the span is allowed to deflect and return with the variation in the traffic flow load. At the pier point the bridge is held ridged while the span is allowed to flex under the variation in traffic flow. That is the point where the most fatigue would accrue. After the bridge fails at this point it is no longer a complete structure. The load then is transferred to the remaining structure in the fashion of a shock, which completes the total collapse. The bridge repair was only a road surface and rail project, not a structural repair.

Sorry Mike, Bush is culpable here. By giving tax breaks to the wealthy in time of war, and by engaging in a war of choice in the first place, among other blunders. Clinton's domestic policy produced surpluses and reduction of debt, leaving more money to address critical issues at home. Bush has increased the national debt by 3 trillion dollars. You can't blame all that on 9/11, which happened on Bush's watch, BTW.

Outraged,
I'm no engineer, but I heard a commentator on CNN say that this bridge became a model for several across the country because it had no piers that interfered with boat navigation. If this is true, I hope the others are not equally vulnerable.

Why can't you people see that GLOBAL WARMING was the cause.
