Ever get the feeling you're seeing the same faces in those political crowds? You are, as today's Hartford Courant explains. Here's the top of the story....

MANCHESTER, N.H.

She was the rare young person in a crowd where virtually everyone seemed to be over 50. And she wore a Boston Red Sox shirt.

Maybe that's why Rudy Giuliani, a diehard Yankee fan stumping for votes in this state, noticed Jo Jensen.

"I have to take a Boston Red Sox fan," Giuliani announced at a town hall meeting in early June, as he settled on the bubbly, smiling young woman.

Jensen, 21, spoke tentatively at first.

"Mr. Mayor, yeah, I'm sorry we lost last night, too." (The Oakland A's had defeated Boston.)

Then she pitched her question, the reason she was in New Castle that day:

"How would you address the problems facing Social Security? Specifically would you raise taxes, or would you allow future generations to have more ownership with something like personal retirement accounts?"

An odd query, perhaps, coming from a new college graduate wearing a grin and that Red Sox shirt.

But Giuliani smiled broadly. "Whatever you know of my philosophy," he said in an almost paternal, friendly tone, "which of those two things do you think I would agree with?"

The crowd laughed.

"Tell me," he said. "Tell me, what do you think and I'll tell you what I, I ..."

Jensen politely interrupted. "I think you would choose the ownership and personal retirement accounts."

"Yes," the mayor said, making eye contact with Jensen. "Yes."

Yes, Jensen thought to herself.

The week of the Giuliani event, Jo Jensen seemed to be everywhere in the Granite State, wearing the same smile, the same shirt, and asking the same question about the future of the Social Security system...

When the story is about the questioner instead of the questionee, you're off message.

It sounds like Rudy Gigoloiani is searching for a new wife, if she was one of his cousins she'd have a better chance.

So Giuliani needs someone to tell him what his position is on a topic like Social Security - and the Republicans actually like this schmuck?

Clever name, remember when you use to post as John E.???

If you want to get into incest and the candidates, isn't that a Democratic thing? I'm sure Clintoon raped a few of his cousins growing up.

If we switch to a Social Security system with personal retirment accounts and Jo Jensen becomes permanently disabled in 6 years and unable to work. How will she survive the rest of her natural, permanently disabled life on only six years of constributions into this type of plan? When will conservatives understand that Social Security is not a retirement plan? This is not a rhetorical question, I would like someone to tell me how you would receive income under this system if you are permanently disabled.

Beverly Hillbilly Jethro:
Disabilituy pay can still exist under private accounts. That is just one of the ways Social Security has gone amok. It was originally designed for retirement but expanded way beyond that.

Also, one can carry an insurance plan that can come into play upon disability.

Also, no one is proposing doing away with Social Security permanently. Privitizing some of it, though has been proposed.

You do much better with your own retirement plan than you can under Social Security. Social Security also is going bankrupt. When will you folks on the Left admit that your own retirement plans do better and that something must be done otherwise there won't be much come 2040??

Why are you lying? If Jo Jenson makes $45K annually and her company offers her Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance for up to 10 x her annual base pay, how long do you think $450K would last a woman he was permanently disabled at 28 and unable to work?

John D,

Don't try talking finance to Jethro, he won't/doesn't get it.

He doesn't understand the differences between a retirement plan and a disability plan. He doesn't understand that there are different risk profiles of each plan and therefore there needs to be different strategies.

For whatever reason, the Trib did not post this respinse to Jethro:

Jethro, first of all i didn't say Social Security should be done with entirely. Second, insurance companies also offer disability insurance plans, so if something unfortunate was to happen and you had the insurance, you could get money. As you noted, many ocmpanies also offer disability insurance.

Terry,
Social Security is not a retirement plan. Why don't you get that?

If you can afford a disability plan. If you can't, Johnny, then what? Selling pencils on a street corner?

Jethro,

The primary beneficiaries of social security will get this money as part of or all of their retirement income.

Social Security is primarily a retirement vehicle. Most of the payments are for retirement not workers comp.

Tony, if the working man didn't have 12.4% of his income connfiscated for this ponzi scheme, he probably could afford to but this disability insurance.

I have figured out if a working guy (making about $50K/yr) was not paying into social security and saved that money and invested in the DJII, he would be able to save about $800K by the time he retires. Add this to a 401K or pension and the retiree would be living a very comfortable life. And possibly, be able to pass on some wealth to the next generation - unless the libs tax it thru the estate tax.
