Cindy Sheehan, the nation's best-known Iraq War protestor, was in Washington today, trying to raise the pressure on Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the House Speaker, to authorize impeachment proceedings against President Bush.
As I've written earlier, Pelosi essentially ruled out impeachment as a possibility before last year's congressional elections and since and has shown few signs of reversing herself.
But Sheehan isn't one to give up easily. After all, it was only a few weeks ago that she said she was giving up her role in the peace movement, only to return after a brief respite.
Here's how the Associated Press reported on Sheehan's activities in Washington today.
By NATASHA T. METZLER, Associated Press Writer
ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan on Monday moved another step — actually several thousand of them — toward carrying out her promise to run against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi because the California Democrat won't consider impeachment proceedings against President Bush.
Sheehan and about 200 other war protesters began walking from Arlington National Cemetery to the Capitol Hill office of Rep. John Conyers, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, where any impeachment proceedings would begin. Sheehan said she would ask Conyers to initiate impeachment proceedings against both Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.
"Impeachment is not a fringe movement, it is mandated in our Constitution; Nancy Pelosi had no authority to take it off the table, " Sheehan told her group of orange-clad activists Monday. "If Nancy Pelosi doesn't do her constitutionally mandated job by midnight ... I will announce that I'm going to run against her."
Across the street, about 20 people demonstrated against Sheehan and the other anti-war protesters.
Sheehan, whose 24-year-old son Casey was killed in Iraq, has been saying for two weeks that she would seek to oust Pelosi from office by running against her as an independent in her San Francisco district if Pelosi didn't change her mind by July 23 on trying to impeach Bush.
Conyers, D-Mich., introduced a bill last term calling on Congress to determine whether there are grounds for impeaching Bush. Pelosi has steadfastly dismissed any talk of impeachment, saying Democrats should focus their efforts on ending the war in Iraq.

Ah, the Left Wing are in full foaming-at-the-mouth rabid mode, lead by Cindy Sheehan. John E. are you there too?
Actually I hope you get your impeachment hearings because it'll be the best thing you folks could do to ensure the GOP not only wins the White House but reclaims Congress.
So as Bush would say, "BRING IT ON!!!!!"

Countdown to the "Patriotic Wingnuts" who are going to claim that Cindy Sheehan, who lost her son in Iraq, is acting "Unpatriotic".

I will give Ms Sheehan some credit- this is not a non binding resolution...
Unlike most of the political left she is doing something about what she believes in- she is misguided and has obviously been given some really bad advice- but she definitely has the courage of her convictions.
She will fail miserably, but I respect her.

Good for Cindy--impeachment is reasonable at this point given the way Bush has indicated his administration is above the law (warrantless wiretapping, excessive expansion of executive privelege, the firing of US attorneys etc). This is not about D vs R's. Its about whether we continue on as a democracy, or fall into a defacto dictatorship.

John D,
Apparently losing a loved one is more humorous than, say, colon cancer. Otherwise, why would you compare a grieving mother who feels ignored and wronged a rabid animal.
Can't wait to hear about ol' touchy-feeley Rob's take on this tragic bit of name calling.

I think Sheehan is a little nuts, but I don't blame her for holding Pelosi to her own rhetoric. Pelosi has spouted off about how Bush lied, etc. If she really believes that and thinks she can prove it, then she should have the courage to bring Articles of Impeachment. If she doesn't really believe it, then she should can the empty rhetoric and stop misleading impressionable people like Sheehan.

Why, when someone who truly believes in something and takes action, do people call them a nut job, loony, etc? I give Cindy Sheehan a lot of credit for taking on Bush and Company. She lost a son and she believes, as many of us do, that this war is senseless.

The left screaming Dems are in full rant with nutjob Cindy Sheehan saying Bush sould be impeached. Going to War after the UN sanctioned Saddam 17 times is not an impeachable offense neither is spying on Alquaeda or firing 9 U.S.Attorneys. What is the matter with your logic if it weren't for MoveOn.org, Daily Kos, People for the American Way and George Soros the billinoaire this nonsense would not matter. President Bush has done a great job we are winning the surge in Iraq, the stock market is at almost 14,000, unemployment is at historic lows 4.5 percent get a grip folks you're losing it. One can only feel sorry for Ms. Sheehan. She lost not only her son but most of her family who have distanced themselves from her. Unfortunately, she has been used unmercifully by the extreme left.

Long Live Nancy Pelosi:
I say that because it will take a woman to clean our house out. Hillary can't get there any sooner. Sec. Rice didn't do it. By the way where is Secretary Rice? consolidating her role in the constitution over to Chertoff. Giving Putin lesson on English as a third language, or just avoiding Congress all together.
I don't think Ms. Sheehan has the political clout or endeavor to make that happen. I do think Nancy Pelosi did the right thing by taking it off the table as there were so many other things to do instead of babysitting someone elses child and not getting 180.00 a week to do so, that's what Laura gets paid to do. The Lady Speaker had "hope" and hopes to heal America at a time wherein we were JUST TIRED as a People. After The President's speech on the day of September 11th, was tiring enough as you sat and watched someone who knew more than he was saying behind (children). Heck he still hiding behind someones child, they just happen to be serving in a branch of our military.
Then to find out, Yea we knew, but hey what a better way to get our "Patriot Act, Liberation of Iraqi Oil aka "Reconciliation" Real Id Act, EEVS, Purging of the Prosecutors, Ambrahoff Scandal, must we go on...oh yea, Osama Bin Laden, and Saddam, while you "Work" all day, "Invest" all day, Raise a family, Educate a family all day and for what, So a new (Administration) can come in and just take us back to 1941 and then be told that we need to "Assimilate" some people.
So Ms. Sheehan gets a "You go Girl" from me, but let Ms. Pelosi, allow the "Boy who Cried Wolf" continue to cry wolf as all of his lies and deceipt unveils itself right before Johns eyes.
So I applaud her for going to Arlington, my father served 27 years in the military, and I know he has turned over and stood up in his grave and ran down my hall to make sure I got up this morning and shot straight to America as to where they are and where we are headed.
*Arlington*
or
*Iraq*

Jerry S. you should apply for a Y-Visa or a H-1Visa or better yet if you are under the age of 42 years of age, you should go and relieve one of military men and stop selling the Bush Administration. Heck you can sell crack and get a better american at the end of the treatment cycle. I know I don't live in Chicago, but if I'm not mistaken a lot of your men and women are stationed over there who think the same thing. Just one Day, Just one Day.
Are you man enough to do that. I am, but if I wanted to join a Gang, there is one down the street that paints on the walls all day and all night.
Let America know you are willing to do that call out to your local recruiter and get your 5.00 for joining this mans army. Put the 5.00 in the bank, and maybe when you get back, if you get back, you will have enough to pay your COPAY.

"Anonymous," Cindy Sheehan has lost her family and friends because of her actions. She has cowtowed and smooched it up with Hugo Chavez and Castro. Her son re-upped his tour of duty VOLUNTARILY in 2003, while the Iraq War already began. He knew the situation and chose to fight for his country. No one forced him to stay in the military. It's tragic he was killed, that is not the issue. But how Cindy Sheehan has reacted, shamed her son's name, her family and her country is the issue.

I guess parents are just supposed to allow their kids to do anything they want, and never have an opinion about it, unless it completely supports exactly what the kid wants. So if the parents of John Walker Lindh don't support his decision to fight for Al Quaeda, they must be shaming their son's name, their family, and the country. After all, it is the flip side of what Cindy Sheehan is doing, except the wingnuts can get appropriately foamy-mouthed about Lindh, and then Sheehan, but for polar opposite reasons. Sorry, Cindy is the mom, she is entitled, via labor, at a minimum, to take her position and get respect for that position. You might not agree with her (I think a few of her tactics are a bit over the edge) but you better f!@#$%^ respect her rights as a mother, mother.

Nice language there Snitramc! No surprise that Mark didn't censor that dialogue though.
Anyway, Ms.Sheehan can feel and do whatever she wants. It's a free country. Just like I can feel and do whatever I want. And it's just not my belief that Ms Sheehan has shamed her son, family and country. It also happens to be the belief of HER FAMILY!!

This Jerry White from Springfield, Illinois says President Bush is doing a great job. I wonder if White knows what Bush's approval rating is?? Or how much of the world and many many Americans consider Bush a criminal and a terrorist?? Keep on listening to Fox Lies and your superhero Rush Limbag. Again, Bush will go down in history as the very worst President the United States has ever had.

"Bush will go down in history as the very worst President the United States has ever had. "
No way- all you have to do is remember Mr. Clinton trying to spin the definition of the word "IS" to defend himself in his deposition.
That was classic, rock bottom, embarrassing I don't care what your politics are. I still laugh at that- my kids defend themselves with more credibility.. and I voted for Clinton twice..
you could also look at Mr Carter's handling of the Iran hostages or even Bush Sr's "read my lips" sellout of the American taxpayer.. these are just recent examples.
Get real!

Who said this?
"The Democrats are the party of slavery and were the party that started every war in the 20th century, except the other Bush debacle. The Federal Reserve, permanent federal income taxes, not one but two World Wars, Japanese concentration camps, and not one but two atom bombs dropped on the innocent citizens of Japan -- all brought to us via the Democrats."
If you guessed Mother Sheehan, you're correct. It's in the weekend's San Francisco Chronicle:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/07/22/INGC6R23F41.DTL
I always thought the Germans started World Wars I and II, not the U.S. or even the Democrats, but who am I to doubt Mother Sheehan?

Wow, so there really are Wingers out there STILL trying to make the anti-factual argument that President Clinton is somehow one of the worst of the worst president? I'll leave all the jump-in-your-face obvious reasons like the booming economy, budget surpluses, and overall sense of power and well-being, and go with what the people think:
Clinton left office with the highest approval rating of any president (since such polls started being taken during Truman), 65%, higher than Reagan's. At no point in time, including the heart of impeachment, did President Clinton's approval rating EVER fall below 50%. http://www.pollingreport.com/clinton-.htm At no point in time did approval for impeachment surpass (or even get close to) 50%.
"heartburn" has hereby screamed from the rooftops "I am a Winger! I am a proud 26%-er and nothing will convince me that the overwhelming majority of Americans are right and that I am wrong!!! Facts be damned!"
If you want to make an argument besides Bush 43 for the worst president ever, I'd like to nominate Carter, Hoover or perhaps Ulysses Grant or James Buchanan.
Unfortunately for reality-challenged individuals like "heartburn," in the real world Bush is a pariah and nothing that the non-stop GOP attack machine has mustered has dulled the sheen of his predecessor, the most successful president of this generation. I bet even heartburn knows that President Clinton would win a 22nd Amendment-free matchup against President Bush, or anyone else for that matter.
Finally, you have the profound ongoing irony of what has become of key impeachment figures like David Vitter and Newt Gingrich. Why is it that those screaming loudest to hang Clinton from the gallows for sexual indiscretions WERE DOING THE EXACT SAME THING AS HE AT THE SAME TIME. Granted, Newt eventually married the intern that he was having an affair with at the same time he was attempting to impeach Clinton for doing the same, but it is pretty impressive chutzpah to be such a glaring hypocrite.
Most Americans know that the impeachment process was a salacious joke; they can see that by the way the media has no appetite for impeaching Bush despite the fact that significant numbers support impeachment (in far greater numbers than those who supported the Clinton impeachment fiasco). All the arguments that Wingers have been making to pardon Scooter Libby suggest that Clinton did nothing wrong either by lying under oath, since we keep being told that since there is no underlying crime in the Libby case, he should be granted (extreme) clemency. The people long ago understood that the Clinton impeachment was the exercising of a political vendetta, and a furthering of what Ronald Reagan called "the criminalization of politics."

And we're suppose to be kind to this woman, Bruce? I am sorry she lost her son, but hundreds of thousands have lost their sons in the past 60+ years to war and very, very few of them resorted to the level of Ms. Sheehan. Like I've been saying, she shames her son, her family and her country. She is nothing more than a Hugo Chavez emissary.

Let us all, let her go.
Posted by: Doug Zook | July 24, 2007 1:01 PM
we can go round and round about the absurdity of the Clinton impeachment- I believe it went too far. The length of your thesis alone screams over compensation, my antacid friend!
BUT- the fact still remains that the worst of it was brought on by the Leader of our country acting like an immature child and then lying about it.. The act alone in the oval office would get anybody fired from a real job ( no pun intended).
I say Clinton loses purely for this fact alone-
Posted by: heartburn | July 24, 2007 1:14 PM
Also- be careful with placing public opinion polls as the sole indicator of successful presidents.. the same public that is polled votes barely 50% of the time and know more about Paris Hilton than what is going on in either local or federal government... see Cindy Sheehans belief that we started WW2..not too loopy!
Posted by: heartburn | July 24, 2007 1:22 PM
"Also- be careful with placing public opinion polls as the sole indicator of successful presidents.."
I know I know, I've heard the very same line from absolutely every Winger who insists that polls don't matter... until they trot out a different poll that they like. Note local media-hounddog Bruce's incessant search for absolutely any poll that supports his contention that everything is A OK in the Grand Old Party as well as the nation.
Anyway, to summarize, I agree that public opinion polls should not be the final basis of comparison. However, couple that with historical analysis, quantitative economic data and the view of the people, and the picture is pretty clear. This after the endless revisionist history that still goes on to this day. I hope once Bush leaves office that pollsters will start asking the question: If the 22nd Amendment were repealed, which former President would you most like to see in office? It would appear that if Hillary wins the presidency, that question will have more or less been answered anyways.
I can't disagree that Mr. Clinton had his moments of petulance and immaturity, but those traits are far worse under his successor. Clinton's wrongdoings were personal and sexual, Mr. Bush's are unConstitutional and geopolitical. There is simply no doubt that Mr. Clinton will continue to be viewed favorably vis a vis President Bush.
The Clinton Impeachment was a failed coup d'etat in the midst of the greatest peacetime economic expansion in American history. Especially in light of the Scooter Libby "no underlying crime" hypocrisy, I'm confident Clinton's legacy will survive the never-ending assault from the GOP.
It is laughable to suggest that President Clinton will ever be viewed as one of the worst presidents.
Posted by: Antacid | July 24, 2007 2:27 PM
Antacid-
petulance and immaturity? How can you understate that any more- and you claim my position is laughable?
Are you OK with him being caught up in that completely self created circumstance while we had our bombers, painted with UN markings, bombing Serbia?
Could he have just possibly been distracted enough to ignore early signs of Al Queda's plans?
DOn't give him a pass just because it was personal and sexual, he totally made himself and his office vulnerable to HUGE security issues..

John E:
When Cindy Sheehan quit the anti-war movement (temporarily), she unequivocally exclaimed that America is not the country she loves.
In a pro Lynn Stewart rally held on April 27, 2005, she said:
"I was raised in a country by a public school system that taught us that America was good, that America was just. America has been killing people, like my sister over here says, since we first stepped on this continent, we have been responsible for death and destruction. I passed on that bull**** to my son and my son enlisted. I’m going all over the country telling moms: “This country is not worth dying for. . . . "
[Censorship added to get it past the Swamp Guards.]
She called Lynn Stewart, the lawyer convicted of giving aid to terrorists who plotted against the U.S., her “sister”? What does that say about her loyalty?
And did I mention that Cindy Sheehan referred to the United States as a “cancer” in the world on at least one occasion, and possibly twice?
It’s her right to say all of this stuff. I don’t begrudge her that right. Nor do I find it “unpatriotic” for her to attacks Bush, Cheney, members of Congress or anyone else. She has the right to think poorly of those who disagree with her views on anything. That’s what “freedom” is all about. In fact, we have to stand up for the rights of people like Cindy Sheehan to say this stuff just to insure that public debate never loses its perspective.
But, the woman who said that she doesn’t love America, who said that it is bull**** to believe America is good, or worth fighting for, or worth dying for; who said that America is a “cancer” and only responsible for killing; and who sides with traitors – hates America. Had she stuck to attacking Bush, Cheney and their cohorts, I would accept that she did so out of patriotic fervor or out of grief over the loss of her son. But don’t tell me she’s a patriot when she expresses unequivocal contempt and hatred toward the country and its people. If that’s patriotic, there is no such thing as being unpatriotic.
