Environmentalists have argued that reducing meat consumption would be one way of creating a more environmentally friendly world since it takes so much land to grow the grain which feeds livestock, with all the attendant fuel costs.

There are good ways to reduce meat consumption and bad ways to reduce meat consumption, of course. The Washington Times reported today about one of the bad ways: the violence in Iraq.

BAGHDAD -- Once-flourishing middle-class families in Baghdad are now eating meat only sparingly, if at all, as violence across the city prevents people from working and farmers from delivering food to the capital's markets.

Some women are eating less in order to give their food to their children, residents say, while others try to make meals for a family of five from a portion of meat that would barely make a single hamburger.

"Even my family does not eat meat too much; maybe when we have visitors and guests," said Jenan, a university graduate whose family once was very well off, but is now crippled by the lack of work.

"I don't like to eat it. I prefer that my nephews and nieces have my share. You get the idea," said the tall Iraqi woman, who has unwillingly lost some 20 pounds in the past two years.

This paragraph contained a gripping image:

Farmers are discouraged from bringing food to the city by the risks on the roads and by tedious delays and demands for bribes at a network of checkpoints. Baghdad streets are now home to small flocks of sheep that eat the trash piling up in empty lots.

So the streets of Baghdad are dangerous for Iraqis but safe for sheep? Very strange.

Another fine accomplishment by the Republican Party.
We wouldn't even be in Iraq right now if the Republican Party wasn't filled to the brim with non-thinking lockstepping robot drones.

Say goodbye to the three headed Rudy McRomney monster.

The Republicans like to have their "leaders" think for them and they're now being told to do the robot lockstep behind Hollywood Conservative Freaky Freddy Thompson, a do nothing phony if there ever was one, which means he's a perfect fit for the RR robots.

But look on the bright side - we're making progress. The Decider has told us so.

Why doesn't the Commander Guy send over a few billion dollars worth of prime beef courtesy of American taxpayers.

Then, whatever isn't stolen by Haliburton or given to the insurgents,Iraqi's can have nice meal that our children will pay for someday.

The Iraqis are eating more vegetables. That means less animals led to slaughter (granted more methane gas). Shouldn't PETA be jumping up and down for this?
