As someone who majored in English in college, I have a fondness for poetry. Apparently, so does Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.) chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, who has borrowed from Elizabeth Barrett Browning to take some political potshots at congressional Republicans. The "letter" he refers to in his introduction is, of course, fictional.

My guess is that congressional Republicans may respond with their own poetry. I have some ideas about lines they could use. There are some particularly good ones from Shakespeare. But I'll leave that to them. I'll post whatever response they come up with. Here's Emanuel's press release:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Thursday, April 27, 2006

Dear K Street, How Do I Love Thee?

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, U.S. Representative Rahm Emanuel (D-IL), released the following statement as prepared for delivery on the House Floor:

"Mr. Speaker, investigators have recently uncovered a letter from the Republican Leadership to special interest lobbyists -- I'd like to share it with you today.

Dear K Street Lobbyists,

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

I love thee to the depth of thy oil wells,

For thou shall have $14.5 billion to drill them.

I love thee to the heights of thy drug profits,

For the Medicare bill gives you $139 billion.

I love thee for thy golf courses, and for thy private jets.

I love thee for thy donations, libations, and vacations.

For now we must part, and I'll call it reform,

But remember, in December, once we get past November,

The travel ban expires, and I'll meet you at the tees.

"Yours forever, 'cause I can't quit you,

"The Republican Congress."

As an organizer of Beyond Today, which is a local peace and justice group, I have followed Rep. Emanuel's career. If this is true, and Rep. Emanuel delivered this joke speech, I am just about to throw up over it. We beg him and beg him to take serious action on these issues, but all he has the balls to do is make up joke poetry? He puts up the facade of a fighter, but Rahm has REAL power and he REFUSES to take action. He pokes fun at the Republicans, but hogties the Dems with his pro-war policies. Rahm's a millionaire himself. We are waiting for more than poetry from the man.

Emanuel quotes in his press release a "letter that is, of course, fictional"? His truth-telling is as bad as his poetry.

The WSJ is reporting that there's a new sex scandal.... Republicans are gonna have a tough time with this one...
