House votes for slots
The House of Delegates voted 71-44 to send a bill to the Senate outlining the details of a slot machine gambling program, contingent on approval by the voters in November 2008. The bill appears to remove the last remaining obstacle to the resolution of the current special legislative session. Leaders in both chambers are expected to come to a quick consensus on a tax and spending cuts package later today. The chambers must agree on some differences on the slots legislation as well, but they are expected to be easy to resolve.
Because some delegates did not record their votes before House Speaker Michael E. Busch took the call, the vote total will change, but not the outcome.

Comments
The Amendment added to the slots bills that prohibits Ocean Downs from building a hotel within 10 mile of the track or even building an arcade is just plain ridiculous and corrupt. it can't be legal. More Maryland Corruption. It limits the ability of the slots to make money for Maryland

I haven't made many comments on this blog lately. I was exhausted and frustrated after the mayoral race. But, now I feel the urge to ask why Sun coverage of Special Session issues affecting Baltimore City has been so, well, seemingly incomplete? Something significant happened that I don't fully understand and the Sun has been practically silent. A couple of years ago, the Baltimore City delegation voted to keep SLOTS out of Baltimore City. This year, practically every member voted to put them near Cherry Hill and Westport on property the city has gifted to developers. Why? Why the complete flip flop from House Speaker Busch and the city delegation? Why did Gov. O'Malley change from an anti-Slots position to a pro-Slots at tracks position, to pro-Slots nowhere near a track? Why did Sheila Dixon campaign for mayor on an anti-Slots position, and then request that the General Assembly place them on the land she practically gave away to the Polakoff, or whatever they call themselves, Comony company? Where's the back story to this suspicious front story? Have all of our city reps just sold us out? Did they all change positions merely because a democrat gov asked them to? Sun, Mr. Green, please don't sleep on this. There is more to cover in the legislature than just democrat vs republican issues. Tell us the deal with our Baltimore City Delegation. Tell us why our mayor flipped her position before she has even been sworn in as mayor.
