Chesapeake Bay Bridge

BayBridge.jpg

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge is an engineering marvel and the most famous man-made structure in Maryland. The bridge opened July 30, 1952 at a cost of $45 million and carried 8,278 cars that first day and more than a million vehicles in its first year. At the time it opened, the 4.3 miles made it the largest, all-over-water steel bridge in the world. On June 28,1973 a new westbound span was opened at a cost of $148 million.

I am amazed every time I drive across the bridge or see photos of it. I think about the people that built it and have to maintain it. I hope you enjoy the gallery of photos of the bridge under construction, and will share your memories and comments with me.

I sent a note about this picture. I am not sure if you received it.

I stated that the gentleman at the top is my dad, Nick Guerieri. He died in October, 2006. He was very proud of the snapshot that was taken on that day. I actually bought the original print from the Baltimore Sun which they matted and framed for us.
I call my dad, the angel with the hard hat and hope that he continues to keep travelers safe as they travel across.

Thank you for your note . I am sorry I didn't receive the first one. I am amazed by the skill and danger people like your father faced to build such an amazing structure . This is one of my favorite pictures and was used on the cover of photo book published in 1999 called " A Century in The Sun " It was taken by Baltimore Sun Photographer Hans Marx in 1950
