Tomorrow's editorials: Baltimore fails Racheal Wilson again

Here's a preview of an editorial we're working on. Let us know what you think. The best comments will appear alongside it in the print edition.

Baltimore failed fire cadet Racheal Wilson when it sent her, ill prepared and ill equipped, into a live fire training exercise that violated dozens of federal safety standards. Her death is the deepest stain imaginable on the department, and there should have been no priority higher than doing everything possible to make recompense to her family. Now the city has failed her again by bungling the paperwork for a federal death benefit from the Department of Justice that would have paid nearly $300,000 to her children.

Mayor Sheila Dixon's reaction -- that the failures occurred under a previous fire chief -- doesn't cut it. For one thing, the request for information that the department failed to provide came in the last few months, and for another, she is responsible for setting matters straight no matter which fire chief was involved. Ms. Dixon needs to take charge of finding a way to take care of Ms. Wilson's children financially without forcing all taxpayers to cover for some employee's mistake.

Anyone who had a hand in this failure doesn't deserve to be working for the fire department. Racheal Wilson lost her life because of carelessness. Losing a job seems like a small price to pay by comparison.

Dixon can take 2 police with her to Miami at $4500 and say "the previous Mayors did it".

Dixon is a despicable woman!

If you people in the city that bleeds re-elect her you get what you deserve. More corrupt incompetent failed mayors.

Mayor Dixon needs to get this fixed ASAP!
Blaming the previous fire cheif does not cut it.
Miss Wilson died in the line of duty and her kids deserve that money.
Unbelievable.
Typical MARYLAND DEMOCRAT BS making excuses!
Or is she more concerned about her trial?
I cannot wait for the day I get afford to move out of this failing, crime ridden, corrupt city.

Actually I think this is a failure of the federal government. To deny a claim like this merely because the paperwork wasn't exactly in order, without inquiring why or if it could be simply correct, is a derelict of duty.

Jay,

If you are really that anxious to "move out of this failing, crime ridden, corrupt city", then what's stopping you? Affordability? Puh-leeze. I'm sure that you can find a cheap house in the county or that exurban paradise, York. Either you're an Ehrlich sycophant who parrots the ex-Gov's "Baltimore is a crime ridden cesspool" meme on the Sun blogs on a daily basis, or you're too lazy and/or stupid to find another place to live. My guess is the latter since your comments typically include improper use of capital letters, sentence fragments, and misspelled words.

Fire Chief Clack has appointed Deputy Chief-Training, Joe Brocato, the task of getting this fixxed. It has become his number 1 priority. We are hopeful that his efforts, along with those of Local 734, the International Association of Firefighters, and members of Maryland's Congressional delegation will bring resolution to this injustice. Seconds into that exercise, Racheal was no longer a rookie-she was a firefighter trying to protect her co-workers in a full blown dwelling fire. Her family deserves that she have that recognition.

Gee MCG harsh words from a liberal.
The truth is never popular for a liberal. Liberalism has sustained and supported Baltimore for 40 years and how about a standing ovation for the results.
NICE JOB LIBERALS.
Is this what you are supporting MCG?
I am for fiscal responsibility, not more of Maryland's Democratic tax and spend mentality.
And I voted for Obama.
As for living here, I have child support, ailmony, college, and my kids mortage to pay for. No whining there, just the facts MCG.
Tell me know it all what's your excuse for supporting Maryland's beloved tax and spend majority?

Somewhere within the Baltimore City Fire Department someone was drawing a paycheck to ensure that these types of issues were taken care of in a timely fashion. Chances are that person was not a lowly firefighter, but rather someone more highly compensated, which reduces the the acceptability of any forthcoming excuses.
Every member of the Fire Department should be outraged at this failure. If this can happen to Racheal Wilson's kids, it can happen to yours.

Everyone needs to pull together in times like this and stop blaming. No matter who did it, it needs to be taken care of for the childrens sake. It just doesn.t have to be an illogical sum.

City Authorities didn’t only fail Racheal Wilson, I believe they failed the entire City of Baltimore twice. Racheal Wilson manner of death displayed the disregard Baltimore Officials (the Mayor, Fire Chiefs past and present, and the entire Mayor staff included) have for Fire Department, the citizens of Baltimore and procedures that are in place to assist the training of those who protect our general public. When training facilities are not adequate, someone should have ensured that those insufficiencies are assessed and corrected, before a tragedy such as Ms. Wilson death occurred. I believe their lack of action to amend those deficiencies speak in volume on how they view the priorities of city safety. As for not assuring that the claim was submitted correctly and speedy, speaks again on how the lack of leadership, core values and integrity our great city officials encompass. This truly is a sad day in our City. Passing blame on Past or Present shouldn’t be an example we teach our future Mayors , Fire Chief and City Officals. If it’s on your Watch (Mayor Dixon) stand up and be accounted for and fix the problem, or the citizens of Baltimore will find someone else who cares and will!

What ever came of the Cardin proposal issue and was any police rank and file or higher up EVER reprimanded?

Or did they just expect it to pass?

You can write even more on this subject as the City is seeking to deny Line of Duty Death benefits to the family of BCFD Captain Don Hubbel, who died following a training exercise last year. His death (from heart attack) was 100% covered under the definitions contained in the Federal Public Safety Officer Death Benefits Act. Unimaginably the City disagrees. No Line of Duty Death benefits for the last 2 members of the BCFD who died serving the citizens of Baltimore. Anyone see a pattern?

This is another example of the decline of the BCFD. The decline was started under the Goodwin reign and unfortunately continues with the current administration and CITY HALL's blessing. This decline is ruining the proud traditions that were a highlight of BCFD history. The promotion of incompetent administrators (uniformed and civilian) is ruining the morale of the members in the field and its retirees.

And you have officials here saying that "The Wire" is just fiction. All of the waste, murder, mayhem, indifference, apathy and cruelty displayed in that "fictitional" TV show, is front and center for anyone who turns on the local news or reads this newspaper This travesty for the young ladies children would not have happened under the last good mayor we have had in Baltimore...William Donald Schaefer.

Why in the world is Barbara limiting her efforts for this one individual? Given that all firefighters deserve the suppport of the entire society in which they live and work, but there has to be a limit. Needless to say, if an exception is made in this case, all other firefighters and police who have died in the line of duty deserve equal treatment. Why isn't she going all out for all of the service men and women we have lost their lives in Iraq and Afganistan? They, too, died in defence of their fellow service staff, as well as laying their lives on the line for their country!
Come on, Barb, get the big picture!
