No large church in Maryland allows its Sunday School workers to change a diaper without some mimum of training in the child abuse reporting laws. ACORN either trains its agents or it does not. There is no way of knowing from this incident or some others if there is endemic corruption in the inner precincts of ACORN. But ACORN gets a lot of federal dollars and the question is if this organization deserves tax payer support when it hires and trains people carelessly. They are hard-working and dedicated to helping poor people who need a helping hand. Yes, this video is appalling, but it doesn't represent the work of ACORN overall; and those workers were fired right away. Second, some of you got it way wrong about ACORN and the foreclosure crisis - ACORN has been working AGAINST predatory lending practices for years and years - and THOSE PREDATORY PRACTICES were an important factor in the crisis. Third, these rumors of ACORN getting a lot of tax dollars are ridiculous! I've even seen claims that they got $4 billion! Come on, have you seen their offices? And the staff work for shoestring pay. Violations of the law are felonies punishable by imprisonment for not more than five years and a fine of not more than $10,000. I am certain that ACORN scrambled to verify that this is some large net cast to smear them. I am certain that ACORN scrambled to verify that this is some large net cast to smear them. They would have hoped to find a number like only 1 in 1000 offices had employees willing to aide people in this heinous and illegal of activities. Unfortunately it appears that it only took these two whistle blowers 5 offices to find employees capable of aiding and abetting in something this over the top. For those posting statements that it is ok that they found this, because it took them more than one try, I would like to remind you that ACORN has over 400,000 employees, taking billions in TAXPAYER money. The fact that only 20% are capable of something this isn’t really a good thing. Even if it were 10% 5% or only 1% willing to do something this atrocious…how many of the other offices are capable of fudging documents for someone who really couldn’t pay back a loan for a home. That is where the real problem lies. It is fairly obvious that these ACORN employees viewed the prostitute and politician pimp as victims of a broken system that needed their help to circumvent the unfair roadblocks put in their way by a corrupt capitalistic society. Hasn’t this been the main allegation against ACORN all along? It is no-wonder that Obama feels that capitalism is corrupt. This is the society that he grew up in, and formed his world view in. ACORN needs to be gutted, and the employees need to be re-educated. It seems to me that the indoctrination process that is part of their training, leads them to be above all else “politically correct”. How do we know what the Narrator says is true without hearing the entire conversation between all parties?

This version of the tape is inconclusive. Based on the "evidence" presented alone could provide a very false interpritation of the event.

ACORN employees advising on setting up a brothel, Justice Dept advising how to legally torture people, Madoof advising how to lie to the SEC, priests sexually abusing children, all true examples of bad apples abusing positions of trust.

It's important to note that this statement was an outright lie, and I am very curious to know why it was included in the original blog when it was so obviously false. Did Mr. Green receive that information from ACORN itself and, with no journalistic integrity or concept of honest reporting at all, decide he would repeat their claim as fact without citing its source or even bothering to fact check the claim? Or did he just make it up to try and defend an organization in a completely indefensible position? These two failed to dig up anything on ACORN in half a dozen other cities around the country, and when they finally do, the rabid right tries to tell us this is pervasive criminality in the organization? That statement by an ACORN board chairman shows a clear disregard for the law at a higher level within ACORN. She could have said that the matter was being investigated by the proper authorities, but she did not.

Why is everyone so up in arms about the hidden camera...I'm sure a thorough reading of the laws and regulations will reveal an allowable reason. Hidden cameras exist everywhere(most stores) and these are not the first "reporters" to use them...what about when the news media follows a city or county or state worker around as happened in the DC area several years ago, that was all done without the employee or the government knowing it was being done until after the fact.

While two wrongs don't make a right, it would seem to me that the real issue is about what they filmed...it is not illegal for them to have testified to what they did and heard in response, all the video does is provide visual evidence, even in a court of law, the exclusion of the video would not invalidate the testimony.

John Boehner's office has run a tally and found some $53.6 million in grants ACORN and its affiliats have gotten from 1994-2008. For what it's worth, they got more during the Bush administration than the Clinton administration. Many people are saying ACORN is geting biullions from the stimulus plan, but I haven't been able to find any evidence that they've gotten a dime from it. Poor journalism like that at the Baltimore Sun is necessary to protect and allow organizations like ACORN to continue operating.

The first video game out and we have indisputable video and audio evidence of ACORN not only suggesting someone else break the law, but they themselves are breaking the law /and/ helping others literally destroy lives.

ACORN's response is very telling. ACORN should have stated that what happened here is an assault on all things right in the world, stated that lives were being destroyed by these people with the assistance of ACORN, and announced an organization wide sweeping review of ACORN workers and supervisors to ensure such a think never happens again.

Instead, ACORN simply said, "hey, nothing wrong was done here and please go away, because we fired these guys." This indicates the organization itself feels nothing wrong was done, even though it is aiding criminals in the destruction of young girls' lives.

They didn't say anything like "I don't know, this has never been tried before", or "we'll have to check this out and get back to you" No "ummmm, well....." They had the answers right away. Can't you see when you watch the video how the questions to the women
have been dubbed over? How do we know, unless we see the unedited
video or an accurate transcript, what the women were actually
responding to? For example, the woman posing as a prostitute also says
that she works as a dancer...they could be responding to questions
about that employment and not the prostitution...stripping is

I would note, however, from my experience in Annapolis, that ACORN is not terribly influential, at least in Maryland. Then I look into the issue, see that the claims are exaggerated at best or downright fabricated at worst, and then don't think about ACORN at all until the next period of hopping-mad-ism. In this case, ACORN was essentially "punked" by people doing the equivalent of prank phone calls. It should be looked at as humor, that the pranksters found people who took them seriously and supplied seriously inappropriate "assistance."

There is a billion dollars available for block grants, designed to help home owners and small businesses, and ACORN usually applies for and wins some of these grants -- but so do a lot of other organizations, so I think it's unlikely that one organization will get most of that billion dollars.

[This has nothing to do with "intercepting" a wire (i.e. phone conversation). It's video journalism like you see done legally every week on 60 minutes, 20/20, Primetime, etc.]

It is a misdemeanor to use a hidden camera in a bathroom or dressing room... "for purposes of conducting deliberate, surreptitious observation of a person inside the private residence," or in a private place with "prurient intent."... [This is referring to making recordings of a sexual matter--that's what "prurient" means.]

ACORN has no case against these reporters.

Problem solved. Two of the ACORN employees caught on film giving tax-dodging, mortgage-fraud advice were fired.

That's bound to be about as effective as solving a mosquito infestation by swatting them as they land on you.

The problem is ACORN, not just its employees. Stop these problems at the source - ACORN.

The US Census people announced that they would not be working with ACORN for the upcoming census. The problem with that is ACORN goes by about a million different names and they'll just apply under another of them. You can see this method of subterfuge in the the "advice" flap. Since you allege that the reporters broke the law in obtaining the interview contents, then for Acorn to discharge its employees on illegally attained evidence makes the discharge wrongful and the employees should be reinstated. I am sure there are plenty of would be child prostitutes and pimps who won't have a roof over their head and have to ply their trade outdoors unless they are reinstated.

I know ACORN workers personally who are incredibly hard-working and dedicated to helping low- and moderate-income people. ACORN's constitutency is facing predatory lending and a host of other economic ills foisted on them by corporate leeches in the financial industry and by the low-wage environment thar our corporate sector has promoted for decades.

Of course, the ACORN employees were wrong and deserve to be fired, but this incident doesn't really speak to the merit of ACORN as an organization.

When a low-budget outfit by ACORN is targeted by deep pockets like Fox News, it is just no contest. Any organization, including the Sun would have trouble if they were investigated day and night by a group with 100 times their money.

Why do Fox and the GOP right-wingers do this? Because they want to thwart ACORN's agenda of helping working people and they don't want these people to vote.

There are very few organizations that combine ACORN's approach of helping individuals and families with financial counseling AND doing systemic advocacy improve laws and corporate policies.

Obama is in bed with the scum of the earth, which is how he got nominated, and elected. I judge him by his (extremely bad) company, and his Hitler-ish demeanor...he is a dangerous narcissist, and will make America into a third-world country if "we the people" don't stop him. Keep Rallying, and never vote for an incumbent again. (for those of you with extremely limited I.Q.s, who voted for B.O., "incumbent" means the one who is in office already...)

While ACORN provides some useful services for inner city poor, it crosses the "legal-lines" regularly, bullying and strong-arming other groups and associations. It gets public funds from politicians to whom it delivers votes and squads of goons who intimidate "unfriendly" voters. I hope some enterprising Attorney General hits them with the RICO stick.

Reminds me of when my kid used to ask Why do I always get caught? I would say because you continue to do the same thing over and over and the odds are now on my side.

Where is the investigative journalism? Are you all asleep - or in the pocket of the politicians who allocate our tax dollars to this fraudulent outfit? In addition to Baltimore and DC, New York has been added to the list by this brave young couple who are doing what formerly would have been done by "investigative reporters". The funniest part is the two letters sent by their activist lawyers to Roger Ailes, CEO of Fox (on the newly sanitized Acorn website). The first letter says the conversations never happened, the voice-overs were added later. The second (barely a day later) says they are looking into the legality of taping the conversations - which never happened, remember!. Can't make this stuff up.
