The black church and the synagogue
Temple Oheb Shalom (right) calls itself "Baltimore's most welcoming Reform Jewish congregation," and it certainly lived up to that claim this week.
After the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church was damaged by lightning earlier this month, leaders of Bethel and Oheb Shalom announced that the largely black, Christian congregation would hold its Sunday services at the Reform synagogue through Labor Day.
There is nothing all that unusual about Christian and Jewish congregations sharing space. In Baltimore, Congregation Beit Tikvah shares a building with 1st Christian Church in Roland Park, and one of the founding principles of the community of Columbia was that diverse religious groups would co-exist under one roof.
But there is something special about the relationship between Bethel, one of the city's largest and most important black churches (its 17,500 members include Mayor Sheila Dixon and city Comptroller Joan Pratt) and Oheb Shalom, among Baltimore's prominent temples. The two congregations have strong, long-standing ties that include holding joint services for Martin Luther King Day and participating in the Black and Jewish Forum of Baltimore (also known as BLEWS).

The partnership between these congregations is in some ways a throwback to a time of intense cooperation between black and Jewish communities, both in Baltimore and nationwide. Jewish Americans were disproportionately active in the struggle for black civil rights in this country, and many have maintained a deep interest in African-American progress.
But relations between blacks and Jews in America have also been tense at times. In Baltimore and other cities, Jews -- along with other white people -- tended to move out of neighborhoods as African-Americans moved in; while many Jews still live in North Baltimore, most have fled the city to nearby suburbs in recent decades. Also, a perception, whether fair or not, of largely Jewish ownership of slum housing in Baltimore has not helped matters. And yet, Baltimore has escaped some of the more intense expressions of black-Jewish tensions that have affected other cities such as New York and Chicago over the years.
The Rev. Frank M. Reid III of Bethel AME had this to say about Temple Oheb Shalom's gesture of solidarity: "We thought, in light of the hate crime that took place recently over in Washington at the Holocaust museum, with the ethnic violence going on in China at this time, that this partnership between the Jewish faith community and the Christian faith community, this partnership between the Jewish community and the black community, re-establishes a bridge that has existed between our two communities for hundreds of years."
All one can really add to that is: Amen, and may such expressions of brotherhood across lines of race and religion continue to be an example to all of us, for hundreds of years to come.

This is a nice, positive story. This is how different people and groups should be interacting in the world, whenever possible. I've always thought, as a Jew, that the supposed enmity of blacks toward Jews was somewhat exaggerated by people and the media. Sure some exists, but also many blacks sense that Jews and themselves are kindred racial/ethnic minorities who do have some "different" cultural attributes from "majority" white population and have both experienced prejudice from people and from hate groups. I applaud these people cooperating like this.

Jews and Blacks belong naturally together and have much in common. Historically both have suffered from some of the most egregious crimes committed against humanity. Yet, men like Louis Farrakhan have fomented divisions between the two groups by suggesting Jews have a monopoly on power in America by being disproportionately represented in business, media and government and somehow this is bad for blacks. The success Jews have had in America has come with hard work and ingenuity; it wasn't just fluke. Several blacks are already emulating the Jewish story. Jews and Blacks are connected by a penchant for story telling, zest for music, dance and entertainment and lots of humor in spite of great suffering. The Jews have an amazing gift for science and math. They should partner with black leaders in Baltimore to bring inner city black children along to greater success in these areas and put the Jewish slum lords(if they exist) to shame. I believe these partnerships already occur everyday and are not that well advertised. Several Jews "Teach for America", others play in symphonies that welcome inner city children into their fold to experience classical music, Jewish medical students volunteer in clinics in the poorest sections of the cities where they go to school and Jewish charities give generously to after school enrichment programs for black youth. I am not surprised Oheb Shalom opened its doors to Bethel AME. Black reverends love to spice up their sermons with a liberal sprinkling of old testament theater and when they do this they regale their audiences with a slice of Jewish oral history and tradition.
