Did the White House dictate the camera angle on Obama's first pitch?
In fairness, President Barack Obama grew up in Hawaii and Indonesia without a dad, never played Little League and is certainly as athletic as one can expect for a president. But White Sox jacket or no, that guy really can't throw a baseball. He made some kind of awkward windup and lobbed a lazy, stiff-armed lefty toss toward the plate at Tuesday's All Star Game that was only saved from hitting the ground by the alert play of Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols, who stretched out and scooped it up. (Note to future presidents: first basemen, who pick throws out of the dirt all day long, may be the ideal choice for this activity.) My dad, who was in the stadium (and called me, obnoxiously, to rub it in), said it was quite clear that the president shouldn't quit his day job.

But did you see Pujols' great save on the Fox telecast? Nope. The camera stayed trained on Obama until the pitch had been safely caught. The producers didn't broadcast the traditional center field camera angle that would have shown both the pitcher and the catcher. Coincidence? Seems highly unlikely. Considering how embarrassing it was for the first President Bush (a standout baseball player in high school and college) when he bounced a pitch on the way to the plate (he said he was trying to throw a curveball), I'd bet the White House had some careful negotiations with Fox beforehand about camera angles. An administration as attentive to image as this one would hardly leave such a pivotal moment to chance.

No wonder he got boooo'd.
JUST SAY IT ANDY.
OBAMA THROWS LIKE A GIRL.
[That would be unfair to girls. //AAG]

He's as good a President as he is a so called pitcher.

Can't imagine Fox giving the White House a break on anything. I don't agree with your Dad, I think he should quit his day job.

Obama...a "girly man" thrower...what an embarrassment he is!

Honestly! What is it with people in general? Can't you just appreciate some fun and entertainment without always having to criticize someone? Times are difficult enough without having to read and/or hear some people always being crude, rude and obnoxious. Find something good to say in life or don't speak at all.

I think its sad that the pres needed the angle of the camera fixed so that it wouldn't show how bad a throw that it was. Sad indeed that his ego can't take it. I don't recall any other presidents doing this? And some have thrown some real stinkers too. Just another reason the masiah is in trouble deep.

What a weirdo! So he doesn't play baseball with his girls?!

The infection that is the GOP party of hate, hate, and more hate, has infected the brains of some, but not all.
Why are bush and cheney still walking around free?? Let's start a national dialogue with this question, instead of something with zero importance, like throwing a GD ball. WAKE UP, AMERICA.

I agree with PAL, loosen up people, its just a game! If you have nothing good to say about anything, please keep the nastiness in you and let the rest of us move on.

You Americans are never happy! For 8 years, you praise GWB, who was good at NOTHING! You liked the fact that the White House was a blackout zone, where no information on the destruction of the military or the economy ever hit the light of day until all the damage was done. Now you have a man who can laugh at himself, and will even have fun with the things he is not good at. You NEED Obama, somebody who can get good at anything, and motivates the very best to join his team just by being such a good sport.

Some writers have way too much time on their hands and not enough meaningful topics to write about. It's really sad that they get paid to write about topics like this. Watch the movie "Idiocracy" to see where this mentality will lead us all.

Obama is a fantastic basketball player and about the world's worst bowler. No one does all the sports well. You never heard anything like "Bo knows racquetball."

Not picking on whether or not Obama throws like a girl. We all can't be great at everything. He is an awesome hoopster. However, there is a good chance his people did manipulate the camera angle to protect him from the possibility of tarnishing his near-almighty image that he and his spin meisters are diligently, and almost-obsessively, trying to foster.
Just an insight into human nature...Anyone who worries about what they look like all the time is not secure in who they really are. (It may be said that it was his "handlers" who orchestrated the contrived camera angle. To which I would reply, "What is it that his handlers see in him that they are so worried about or not comfortable with?")
Does throwing a baseball necessarily reveal anything deep about a person? No. But, trying to manipulate how you may be perceived while engaging in such a benign activity, may start to unveil a little. Just a thought.

Just show how MUCH his handlers are covering up for this person

Gee PAL you actually see something good in life that this president hasn't had the chance to destroy. Like the American way of life? If your the president your open to any comments by anyone. And if your a horrible president as OBAMA is then you get what you deserve. He has DESTROYED and is continuing to destroy this great country. Wake up and smell the manure in Washington.

Andy:
Thank you for critical journalism. The press should always be questioning authority, and you did a fine job of it today.
You have to say that's its ironic that Fox gave him the favorable angle of all outlets.
Thanks again.

Since know that my son loves baseball and would have loved to be at the game. I could not resist "rubbing it in". What I said was that the president looked like a basketball player. We, here in Southern Illinois, have known that Obama would make a great president since he first ran for the Senate. We as a nation are most fortunate to have him in the Oval Office even though he is a White Sox fan. It could have been worse, he could have worn a Cubs Jacket! I say "Mr. President keep your day job, you are really good at it. Baseball can wait till 2017."

LARRY GREEN! Your ignorance to OBAMA is unbelieveable. OBAMA IS DESTROYING THE USA. Are you blind, Larry???? He has runied America and his Congress is continuiong the death throws as we speak!
[Larry Green? Is this some long-lost relative, or are you having trouble seeing yourself? //AAG]

If Baseball is America's favorite past-time, Maybe the DEMs should fly everyone to the All-Star games? With "Change" shouldn't the World Series become free so all the comrades can attend. Baseball like healthcare should become a "right".

Lee learn how to spell brother.
Oh and your boy George Bush Jr. did a great job as president.
Posted by: jay | July 15, 2009 5:36 PM
Jay, When GW was president we had no upcomming 10 trillion dollar deficit comming our way. We stayed safe from terrorisim for 7 1/2 years and knock on wood (your head) it stays that way. There were millions of more people still employed and even with the troubles during GW's presidency we still had an America that was far right of the far left it is becomming now. All we have done is gone down hill faster and faster with this president.

We, the people, must start a national dialouge on WHY bush and cheney aren't on trial yet.
I don't care how Obama throws a ball, but I do care that our country was destroyed by bush and chainhole.
Posted by: BrokenArrow | July 15, 2009 7:19 PM
Rather then speculate, why didn't you ask the White House people or Fox? Or better yet, try to interview the producers and camera men? Isn't the Baltimore Sun a newspaper?

If anyone took the time to think hhhmm? Why is that White Sox jacket so puffy? I would encourage any of you to try and throw a baseball 60 ft. into the strike zone, while wearing a bullet proof vest. Please post how it goes!!!!

I actually met someone not too long ago that knew Obama and said he wasn't a good basketball player. Thats why he didn't continue playing....
Posted by: Lisa | July 16, 2009 8:36 AM
ok thats lame...wut exactly do girls throw like and i bet whoever wrote this comment about obama probably throws horribly so dont talk about "throwing like a girl",it's a stereotype that needs to stop being used cuz some girls throw perfectly well like me and i could knock you out with my fast pitch and barack threw it very nicely, because it made it to home plate so please shut up about this topic it's stupid...LAY OFF OF PRESIDENT OBAMA!!!
Posted by: jahreya | July 16, 2009 9:28 AM
It's not about the fact that Obama couldn't make it to home plate with a pitch. The problem is that the media is being dictated to by his administration. If they aren't in love with Obama and only broadcasting positive spin then they are locked out to whatever degree unless they capitulate. Wake up people, this country is being turned into a communist state without a shot being fired. Your economy is being ruined and your society is being fundamentally changed into one that tolerates everything including pedophiles. Your government will provide everything for you and freedom will be nothing more than a fantasy. Hyperinflation is coming next, if you know anything about economics then you know it's true. America needs to pull its collective head out and press reset on the government. The founding Fathers felt that we should if things got bad enough, well they are.

I don't know what pitch this writer saw G Bush throw, saying his skipped to the plate. I sawa strike, hard and fast.
As for Obamma, what do you expect? Iran, Korea, Russia, and Hugo Chavez could have told us he threw like a girl....
Posted by: george guynn | July 16, 2009 9:55 AM
I guess he couldn't have someone teach him how to throw before the event. That says something. It tells me the guy is to conceited to realize he needs a little training. Obama's conceite and niavete are reflected in every decision he makes. Sad state of affairs for the US.
Posted by: Tim W. | July 16, 2009 1:25 PM
Directed to Richard Green's comment.....Richard get your damn head out of the sand. America was is shambles long before Obama came along!! Don't try to put this mess on him. He is simply here as a clean-up man!! And it's going to be a hell of a clean-up effort!!!
Posted by: Army Sergeant | July 16, 2009 3:07 PM
GW Bush's throw after 9-11 was right down the middle (not in the dirt). Perhaps the writer was talking about GHW Bush.
[Yes, that's why I said "the first President Bush." //AAG]
