Help wanted Jan. 9
At least for a time -- the better part of three years -- Darryl Logan felt appreciated, productive and normal again. He was the subject of a recent column, and his story shows what can be done -- one man, one woman at a time -- if those of us who can step up to help actually do so, on a direct, personal level. Be a mentor, listen, share your wisdom and common sense. . . . Darryl stopped using and cleaned up, he got a job, he became a reliable worker and he stepped out of the ranks of Baltimore's problem children. A generous old friend from high school helped him, but that's what it takes -- one man, one woman at a time. . . . The phone rings at my desk at The Sun every day, mostly calls from ex-offenders looking for help finding a job, and it's hard for me to keep up in responses. I am going to have a "catch up" day at The Sun, when we'll return as many phone calls as possible -- I am way behind in getting back to those who've asked for help -- and mail out as many information packages as we can. I need two college students on winter break to volunteer a few hours to this effort on Friday, Jan. 9 from 10 am until we're done. We'll be in the Sun newsroom. Lunch included. Call me at 410-332-6166.
