« Lessons of Iraq | Main | McCain hittin' Obama on Iran »

The War comes center stage

It has been a while since the American people heard a substantive discussion about the war on terrorism and the decision of the Bush administration to invade Iraq. The war has cost $800 billion, more than 4,000 American lives, and more than 30,000 wounded. Researchers of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health estimated a year ago that more than 650,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed since March 2003.

Obama says we need more troops in Afghanistan. We took our eye off the target there. We should have kept up the pressure on terrorism there. Instead, he says, we invaded Iraq, which had nothing to do with 9/11, and that just sapped resources away from where they were really needed.

McCain sounds strong on the war -- he's trying to convince the American people that it was a good idea to invade Iraq and that we're winning. This argument has dubious appeal. On one hand, it appeals to our patriotic instincts and our desire for something about the Bush years to make sense. On the other hand, it sounds like McCain is painting a silver lining on a war that most Americans consider to have been unnecessary and too costly.

Both men speak eloquently on this subject and explain their differences clearly.

I very rarely watch tv so tonite John McCain gets to make his first impression on me - he appears to be a great namedropper, and wants to win one for the gipper or be the gipper.

Thank God this immoral war is getting the attention it deserves. 650,000 Iraqis, dead? I'm more than shocked, I am saddened to the core. These Republicans can do all the flag-waving they'd like, but NOTHING will erase the fact that they dropped those 1,000 pound bombs on innocent people. How can we face the world with this blood on our hands? HOW? The reason we are in such bad economic distress is because the rest of the world can no longer support us. This is karma. We must get rid of these war-mongers in November!

Everywhere I look it’s unmistakable. They may have learned to be politically correct. They are better at hiding who they are. The Reagan Revolution, the Gingrich Revolution “Taking Back America” George Bush, Bill Clinton… yah Bill, that might point out the biggest difference this time it’s; “the easy way out” instead of hard armed tactics they lend us enough to catch us (companies and individuals)’ to politely call in our loans, take what we have! Mergers….mergers and acquisitions… and more mergers.. In case you haven’t noticed Standard Oil has been reassembled. Fill in the blanks.
The Robber Barons are back!
