Johnny Dark on 'Herman'

Legendary radio DJ Johnny Dark, a fixture for years in Baltimore and now host of an oldies channel on satellite radio, has been heard from. He weighs in on my blog posts on the dust-up between Peter "Herman's Hermits" Noone and Baltimore's Niki Lee:

"I've known Peter Noone since 1965 and have been on stage with him as recently as 2006," says Dark. "He's come to Baltimore twice in the past 10 years for the Children's Cancer Foundation's Celebrity Ball. The ball is 23 years old and Peter is the only act that's been on the stage for us twice. That was by popular demand.
"As one who's played oldies when they were new, like Peter, I take offense to comments made about the fans of music of the 50's and 60's. You could call me 'balding and old' as well. I turn 74 in July and on the 30th of May will have completed my 55th year in radio. I continue to play oldies on World Space Satellite Radio and am heard in 130 countries around the world. I receive e-mail fan mail daily and I doubt that all these listeners are balding and old. From their comments, some are just discovering this music.
"Getting back to Peter, I know of no artist who cares more about his fans. At one particular outdoor concert in the Washington area, right after Peter performed, it started to rain and we had to cancel the last act. In spite of the downpour, Peter remained under a small tent for over an hour until every last person in line had received a greeting and an autograph. Peter Noone is, in my estimation, one of a kind."

Johnny Dark speaks the truth about Peter Noone - at a recent show at the Lyric, he also stayed for over an hour to sign autographs and pose for photos with every fan that lined up, and there were a lot of them. I also saw him at a couple of shows in Annapolis at the Rams Head Tavern, and he's a heck of an entertainer, with a terrific sense of humor. And he still has a great voice, too. You should make sure you go see him Dan!
