O'Malley blasts Christie on Face the Nation
Gov. Martin O'Malley told a national television audience this morning that Republican Gov. Chris Christie would provide "tremendous entertainment value" if he runs for president, but will offer little in the way of "effective government."
O'Malley, a Democrat, appeared for on CBS's Face the Nation opposite GOP Gov. Haley Barbour of Mississippi in a segment that focused on widespread speculation that Christie will jump into the Republican primary battle.
Maryland's governor has been picking on Christie for about a year, starting last January when he blasted the New Jersey governor's attitude toward state workers.
O'Malley has sought to raise his national profile this year, taking on a leadership role in the Democratic Governors Association, making frequent trips to Washington, D.C. and appearing on Sunday talk shows. O'Malley is set to be in North Carolina early next week raising money for the DGA.
On Face the Nation this morning, host Bob Schieffer pressed both his guests on whether Christie's weight should disqualify him from occupying the Oval Office.
Barbour spoke of his own struggles shedding extra pounds, and paid O'Malley a compliment: "You see somebody like me opposed to somebody like Martin [O'Malley], he gets the first swing" because he looks better on television.
Schieffer next turned to O'Malley, introducing him as the "slim, trim governor of Maryland." O'Malley dodged the Christie weight question, and when chided for doing so by Shieffer, O'Malley said "it was not an evasion, it was a redirection."
O'Malley took some time to criticize the current crop of Republican presidential hopefuls by saying they are "pandering" to the tea party. He noted that Obama "will not be running against the almighty, he'll be running against the alternative" and said the GOP bench might be "deep in personality" but "the pool of ideas is shallow."
Barbour took some shots at Obama, saying the president is going to "have to learn how to lead, or he's going back to Chicago."
Earlier in the segment, U.S. Sen. John McCain, said that Christie would be a "viable candidate" if he runs. But, the 2008 GOP nominee for president did have a warning for New Jersey's governor, saying: "The swimming pool looks a lot better until you jump in."

The kid governor doesn't have the stones to do a live debate with Governor Christie.

The entire interview as well as the network is completely discounted the minute Schieffer asked about Christie's weight. What an idiotic question. Typical.

Shut up O`malley , nothing worse than a stinking drunk ,that wants to try and put down some one else .Do people in Maryland a favor keep you butt out of the bar every day and try to improve things in Maryland without raising our taxes more!!

The State of Maryland is leaning so far to the left that it is slowly slipping into the Atlantic ocean. O.Malley is leading the slide and the lemmings are following.
Obama is great entertainment, makes you laugh and scratch your head at the same time. He has accomplished what besides removing a couple of terrorists that the military has been after for years before 2008? THEY finally are realizing the fruits of lengthy investigations and interrogations, not Obama.

MOM gets orders from headquarters,
If you want "tremendous entertainment value" look at what we have now.

Perhaps the governor should tell the audience that he is pro abortion, pro gay and that he supports illegal citizens in the state instead of concentrating on the other candidates.

Martin O'Malley is a punk! His attitude and comments are simply pandering to the radical left that includes the likes of Michael Moore and Nancy Pelosi.
Posted by: PompassMarty | October 2, 2011 4:46 PM
I don't think Martin has to worry. Christie will be for gay marriage. Martin can still open the closet door.

"Congratulations" Governor. Like too many of my business clients, my wife and I will also be driven out of Maryland by you for Florida or Virginia....or who knows...Christie's New Jersey in the near future. People will also vote with their feet, Marty. What a silly midget you are at last( but not as big as Christie).

I like the fact that Christie at least stands up to Washington and fights for his State while on the other hand O'Malley is just an Obama parrot. O'Malley's strategy is to get as much Federal aid as possible with a total disregard for the many that are out of work. If your not in a Union or working for some government entity you SOL in Maryland.

Well, you got a bunch of people here who didnt like what the Democratic Governor had to say, however, do any of them research tha facts? Do any of them know their left from right? (How does Maryland lean left and tip into the Atlantic?)
Maybe a Republican Canidate can do good with shallow and vague view on Government beause their voting base do know the truths anyway... I mean who in their right mind making less then $250k a year would ever vote Republican, because NOTHING in their agenda will EVER Aid you in anything you do, and most of their ideas will actually hurt you in life.... research the facts people, and don't do it on FOX NEWS...

Quite an image there from John McCain: Chris Christie jumping into the swimming pool.
Posted by: Barry | October 2, 2011 5:13 PM
James, buy a clue. I and my "evil wealthy" Republican friends don't have to live here. We can take our wealth and businesses to, say, Republican states like Virginia orTexas. You can either figure out to make us stay here or you can race to the bottom with the rest of the failed blue states. There is ...no federal bailout. Make me happy or starve.
Posted by: Leo Hylan | October 2, 2011 5:37 PM
If Leo and his ilk had their way none of us would be getting our social security or medicare just so he could drive his Mercedes/lexus and get away like the Republicans did for the Bush years by not paying for anything and running this country into the toilet - if you make under $250k a year a vote Republican you are stupid - Our guy Harris voted to end SS and Medicare along with the other right wing wackoes who have no brains or programs just hands out for welfare for the rich

Martin O'Malley is an embarassment to Maryland and his party. He will be a token governor these next two years while setting himself up to run for president in 2016, if there is one. And anyone defending his cowardly and immature posturing on shows like this, you deserve the resentation, er, representation from this guy. Don't even want to offend those who deserve to be called man in using that term for O'Malley.
Posted by: AnnoyedCitizen | October 2, 2011 6:16 PM
O'Malley was one of the worst mayors Baltimore ever had and is one of the worst governors Maryland ever had.
Posted by: Bar | October 2, 2011 6:53 PM
C'mon, Marty would never make it as president. He's running for Barbie's seat. She's the one who groomed him and tells him what to do!
Posted by: Anonymous | October 2, 2011 6:55 PM
First, asking if whether Christie's weight should disqualify him from occupying the Oval Office, Is like asking if Obama should be disqualified because he is black. It's ridiculous.
O'Malley has one idea on the economy, and it's RAISE TAXES. For him to say, the GOP "pool of ideas is shallow." is laughable. The democrat’s pool dried up and has been closed for years. Tax and spend is all O'Malley and the Democrats know. O'Malley needs to worry more about the illegal’s he harbors and worry less about promoting himself and his tax increases.

There has to be a special search engine somewhere that triggers every O'Malley hater every time his name appears in print. It's the only way to explain the vitriol that appears without any relevance whatsoever to the content of the article. If you want to criticize, fine, but stick to actual issues, not broadsides based on his alleged youth (he isn't all that young anymore) or his rock band, or just the fact that he is a Democrat. I, for one, am glad I transplanted from NBJ to MD.

I wish all of you right wing teabagging morons would make good on your idle threats and move somewhere else. Besides comedic value, the only decent thing about the posts thus far is that at least nobody found a way to work their normal bigotry into the comments.
James is absolutely correct. The GOP (and particularly the Koch-funded teabag movement) doesn't give a darn about anybody making less than $250K/year. If you make less than that and you vote for any GOP candidate, you are the lemming blindly following those leading you to the slaughterhouse.

(How does Maryland lean left and tip into the Atlantic?)
James, that's an easy one. Maryland's standing backwards.

Senator Mikulski will retire before O'Malley's term is up as Governor so that he can appoint himself Senator from Maryland. This is the payback for not running against Kathleen Kennedy Townsend all those many years ago.
Once he's Senator he imagines some gullible presidential candidate will chose him to be VP. He's almost as lucid as Biden and more hateful.

Eastern Shore Loser, I'm sorry you're a clown who has to beg money from your betters. But don't pretend you somehow "deserve" it ,loser. Just beg for it. Don't pretend anyone owes you anything. Post your address,tsG clown and I'll sell one of my "lexus/mercedes(sic)" and send you a check so you can stay drunk, moron.

O'Malley is the greatest gov in USA, he has brought MD back from brink of disaster. His word is as good as gold. He never run off at mouth, he just speak truth,

I saw the segment today. The writer missed the best zinger from Barbur after MOM was talking off the song sheet on bush's fault, tea party blah blah, Barbour said "I hope Obama does run on his record because we want to talk about that". O Malley was called out by the host and Barbour for not answering the question. Nothing but talking points, nothing original.

Uncle bill is on drugs!

O'Malley says the republican candidates are deep on personality but shallow on ideas?? Isn't that also a fine description of his boss?
Posted by: Chris | October 2, 2011 11:05 PM
Mr. O'malley appeared nothing but arrogant to me. He took swings at the Tea Party and 'do nothing Republicans'. The reality is that people are extremely unhappy with the direction taken by the Democratic party. If you live and work in DC, there is a good chance you live in and spend money in Maryland. A fat, bloated federal government will only serve to benefit Maryland. As such, anything coming from this governors mouth should be viewed as suspect.
Posted by: Bob | October 3, 2011 1:13 AM
I thought it was dripping in irony that OWEmalley questioned Christie's leadership because of high unemployment and his record on education. Hmmm, isn't his honor's party's President in that same boat?
Posted by: Jimmy A | October 3, 2011 6:02 AM
Gov Christie is trying to help NJ taxpayers by reducing the sky high taxes and spending that has brought the state to the brink of bankruptcy. In contrast, Omalley has raised every tax he can think of on working families. Next up: gas tax. No wonder the whole country is buzzing about Christie running for president, while our snide little governor, mostly unknown outside of MD, is desparately trying to get noticed.

Oh GOD!!!! O'Malley!!!!What an idiot. Go to India (the next trip for commerce) and this time dont come back. This man is an idiot. How can he presume to critize Christie???Wishful thinking..from someone who wants to give the store away to illegals and others but loves to raise tolls, etc for tax paying citizens. GO AWAY, O'Malley..have a drink on me.

Dear MOM, Please understand that you are not relevant to the national discussion. You govern a (relatively) small east coast state that survives only because of the proximity to the teat of the Federal Government. Your track record shows the terrible job in Baltimore and now in Annapolis. Only in this fine state could a Governor with approval ratings in the low 40's get a second chance to make things worse. We have become the envy of the "progressive" leftists in MA.
Posted by: BirdFan | October 3, 2011 12:22 PM
u guys are just hating because u know o'malley is right. anyone who likes a governor who talks shit to his citizens like their dirt deserves to not be in office and get a ass kicking from everyone in the state!
