PG Delegate charged with theft

Del. Tiffany T. Alston, a Prince George's County Democrat, was charged this morning with stealing money from her campaign account to pay for wedding expenses.

Alston, a freshman member of the General Assembly, is heretofore best known for walking out of a House Judiciary Committee voting session on same-sex marriage even though she had sponsored the bill.

The charges were brought by the Office of the State Prosecutor, which alleges that she made a series of withdrawals from her campaign account in late 2010, spending $3,560 on wedding related expenses, $660 to pay an employee of her law firm and $1,250.

The indictment uses her new, presumably married surname, Tiffany A. Gray.

Speaker Michael E. Busch, a Democrat, said in a statement that he will "determine the appropriate course of action" after "the judicial process has concluded."

Alston is the fourth Prince George's County Democrat to make headlines this year for corruption. Sen. Ulysses Currie, a Prince Geroge's Dem, will be in court for the next month facing bribery charges. Former Prince George's County Executive Jack Johnson pleaded guilty to corruption charges, as did his wife Leslie, who was a member of the County Council.

I wonder what her pension will be after her conviction/resignation?

Elected officials are like diapers. They need to be changed often...and for the same reason.

Her husband was the long-time top aide to former Prince George's councilwoman Camille Exum, who was accused of using her county credit card for personal expenses.

Shouldn't surprise anyone really. She will probably be re-elected with 80% of the vote in P.G. County.

She won the PG elected official lotto. Everyone knows there's money involved.

PG County is a breeding ground for corrupt entitlement class politicians.

The "I am going to get mine" mentality is inbred in these people.

Well, well, well. This trick theft (allegedly) walked out on important legislation this year PLAYING games.

I hope they through the book at this trick scum theft. We have got to STOP electing the same old scum.
VOTE out ALL incumbents...start fresh even if they turn out to be more SCUM....

Just another reason we should draw a line across the northern border of Baltimore City to enjoin south edges of Baltimore County. Add the city, PG Co, Montgomery and Howard and AA Co on south to be Maryland. The northern part of Baltimore County, Harford, Frederick and points west along with the Eastern Shore can be "North Maryland." To hell with the criminals pizzing away our tax money and stealing!

Ineresting, isn't it, that Mrs. Gray, nee Alston, was allegedly using her campaign funds for her wedding expenses? She was one of the key Delegates to turn her back on those working for marriage equality (after having agreed to co-sponsor the legislation). Guess she did not want her gay colleagues to have all of the advantages she had . . . you know, to rip off contributors and violate the law to have a fancy schmansy wedding . . .

What a hypocrite! She's for same-sex marriage then votes AGAINST it. Then on top of that she gets married using CAMPAIGN funds! How does someone, like this, get elected? With friends like these, I rather have enemies! The least of her problems will be getting KICKED OUT OF OFFICE!! What a joke to the Democratic Party in MD....

Interesting, I clicked a different link and this post popped up first. I understand the general skepticism many have developed regarding elected officials. However, I'm troubled by the rush to judgment in all cases. Perhaps, Delegate Alston is not guilty. Perhaps, even, she's been maliciously targeted by the democrat political leadership that has demonstrated a zero tolerance politicy for any democrat that resists machine control. I think Alston screwed up on gay marriage and handled herself poorly. But, that doesn't make her guilty or worthless. She's had only one session under her belt. She probably needs help, support, and guidance, more than malicious attacks and strict scrutiny.
I'm less skepical of Alston than Delegate Sam Arora, another freshman that vascillated on gay marriage but caved under pressure where Alston did not. Arora is now being courted by Gov. O'Malley in India. One get's rewarded with a trip to india and fundraising help --the other is prosecuted? I think we should question why some elected reps are treated with favor by the party and others are abandoned and attacked by their own democratic party. At any rate, Alston should be presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a resonable doubt as should we all.(didn't mean to write so much-kudos to concise bloggers and commentors)
