O'Malley tangles with a top Senate Republican

Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley's appearance this morning on ABC's This Week with Christiane Amanpour included a sharp back-and-forth about jobs with Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions.

Sessions, the top Republican on the Senate budget committee, floated a 10 percent cross-the-board cut to all federal departments and agencies as a solution to the federal debt crisis that led Standard and Poor's to downgrade America's sterling AAA rating.

O'Malley listened to Session's remarks and wryly noted: "I never once heard the distinguished senator use the word jobs." O'Malley next accused Sessions of "worshipping at the altar of the false god of tax cuts."

Sessions appeared whipsawed during the exchange and the two talked over one another for a period.

On the show, O'Malley promoted his view that the country must focus on a "balanced approach" that includes "investing in the future and investing in job creation."

It was O'Malley's first appearance on a network Sunday morning political talk show. But he's been a guest on several national cable shows since last December when he assumed leadership of Democratic Governors Association.

These TV appearances, plus a series of speeches at Democratic fundraisers around the country, have revealed a side of O'Malley rarely seen in Annapolis: A fierce partisan. Maryland's state legislature is dominated by the Democratic party, so broad swings at the GOP don't matter that much.

But on the national state, O'Malley regularly takes swings at the tea party, Republican "extremism" and he's jabbed at  New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a conservative darling.

O'Malley "is" a Catholic who supports abortion and same-sex marriage. He not only lost businesses and racked up a $2 billion deficit in Maryland, but more importantly promotes a culture of death, and gives scandal to our Catholic faith. Need I say more?!

you can groom that low life omalley all you want,to be the next president, but the people of baltimore know what kind of crook he really is.

im a democrat and i would rather vote for a republican first ,before i dare cast a vote for that hateful omalley.if the people of the world knew the underhanded things this guy has done they woud vote him out of office right away

Maryland is tied for last in job creation in the United States.
What does MOM know about job creation?

Dear blog author:
You have a lot of nerve, or shall I say a lot of fear, not publishing my comment. What about the truth are you afraid of?

Of course he takes swings at the tea party, Republican "extremism," and NJ Governor Chris Christie, a "conservative darling," because Martin O'Malley is an unrepentant, far left liberal. And, Ms. Linskey, why don't you use that term when you write about him, because he IS a leftist?

To even imagine O'Malley recommending anyone is a laugh. All O' is good for is traveling and new tolls on bridges. Oh, and giving away our money to non-citizens. Forget him!!!The worse state for jobs. If it wasnt for the govt. I dont know what would happen here.

LKC, You have said about all anyone needs to know about the apparent heresy of the gov. A cafeteria Catholic is, I suppose, still a Catholic. However, his public positions on these two subjects are diametrically opposed to well-promulgated Catholic doctrine and he should not be allowed to say he is a Catholic. If he had intergity, he would say he used to be a Catholic.

Martin O'Malley a fierce partisan. What a shock. I'm surprised he's not trying to go with the '08 Obama "post-partisan" persona. Even more surprised The Sun isn't trying to help him.

So O' thinks Sessions worships at the "altar of the false god of tax cuts", eh? Well O' worships at the altar of liberalism whose primary sacrament is abortion. He firmly and fiercely believes in abortion at any stage of pregnancy. And he is the "darling" of the liberal Sun and its reporters.
I see you have now corrected the spelling error of "altar" in the posting, Ms. Linskey. Nice work!

Religion is going to be the downfall of this country. Religion should have nothing to do with governing a city, a state or a country. If we keep going that route, we will become another Iran.

I doubt Sessions or anyone else outside of Md knows much about our slippery and amibitious governor. If he did, he would have known that O worships the false god of regressive tax increases on working families.

Christine, I haven't seen one mention of "religion" until you put your mouth on it. This is not a matter of religion. It is a matter of morality. If a rational society cannot subscribe to an absolute morality, we're toast. Thanks for sharing.

Again Bush & republicans let our manufacturing plants and job force be outsourced (over 7 million U.S. Jobs)

Gave over $16 trillion to the banking Empire.

Started an illegal war which has cost U.S. citizens trillions of dollars.

Destroyed our constitution , bill or rights and freedom.

And they have the nerve and BS to attack O'Malley and democrats.

They either are not fact finders or they do not give a darn..

Bush took a balanced budget and our debt was being paid down and turn it into a disaster of the middle class and poor , while transferring our wealth and power to these foreign Empire
.

Define morality LKC.
What gives you the right to judge others?

Once again. The Republican Senator from Alabama did not mention jobs once in his talk. Nor did he volunteer cutting 10% of HIS salary or healthcare. Same old Republican Party.

john, you as a moral relativist have answered your own question. You have defined morality as an INDIVIDUAL JUDGMENT of right and wrong. It is precisely because there is an absolute standard of right and wrong ordered toward the good that I have the right to make prudential judgments based on objective truths about behavior. I don't judge people's hearts...only their actions.

@Sporty: Bush inherited an economic downturn from Clinton. However, instead of handling it with more spending, a la Obama, he cut taxes for *everyone*, and lo and behold, it worked. The Bush tax cuts fueled recovery and created jobs. It also made the tax code more progressive than Clinton's -- the wealthy were left to pay a higher portion of total taxes.

True, the downturn and the wars turned a surplus into a deficit, but the growth spurred by his response had the deficit shrinking each year -- until the Democrats took back Congress. The deficit in the last year of a Republican Congress was less than 10% of the current deficit we have now, and which our president's budget (using even the rosiest of predictions) calls to continue for decades.

It's true that Bush definitely failed to practice fiscal conservatism at various points in his presidency, particularly towards the end. (An opposition Congress wasn't helping, but he hardly seemed to be a staunch fiscal conservative.) But to lump his fiscal views with all of the party, especially considering the Tea Party's predominantly fiscal focus and frequent tussles with the GOP establishment, is like calling all Democrats -- past and present -- philanderers like Clinton.

Jeff Session easily and effectively addressed O'Malley's attempt to spin debt reduction as "jobs." Session whipsawed by O'Malley? - give me a break -watch the video yourself on "This Week." This opinion / blog / article, whatever the Sun calls it is an insult to anyone who thinks on their own.

@Tom: At your suggestion, I watched the full interview.

1. The topic of the interview was the debt crisis and the credit downgrade. Jobs was not the subject before or after the governor's haughty attack (Amanpour returned immediately to the real interview topic). So, the governor's only notable statement was pure political gamesmanship.

2. At no point in the interview does the senator stumble, hesitate, or anything similar. "Whipsawed"?!? Pure wishcasting by the purely partisan author of this amateurish report.

@Joe

Right O.

Also, "...O'Malley wryly noted..." author's words....

Red alert, red alert, opinion article from a "reporter."

Begin verification procedures.

@Joe

Well said. A few other observations.

1. Irrelevant. The Sun would have done a greater service to its readers by linking to the video or transcript, which is a google search.

2. Arrogant. The Sun believes their interpretation of the interview is more important than the interview itself.

3. Lazy. O'Malley going on "This Week" is not news. It's re-hashing what another media outlet already covered.

Let's face it - objective journalism died with the 2008 election. The Sun leads the pack in their partisan reporting from the left. Very despicable. And that is why circulation is in the tank. MOM has taken this state to the brink of destruction. By the time he's gone, the debt will be astronomical. Hope all you liberal drones are happy!

Joe-

You've taught me a new word. Wishcasting. I like it. I'll be using it. Thanks!
