O'Malley declares state of emergency

Gov. Martin O'Malley just declared a state of emergency in preparation for Hurricane Irene, which could dump as much as a foot of rain on Maryland this weekend.

The executive order signed by the governor activates the state national guard and puts the Maryland Emergency Management Agency into high gear. The governor plans to give a news conference from the MEMA headquarters in Reisterstown later this afternoon.

States up and down the eastern seaboard are preparing for the storm, the first to threaten Maryland this year.

OMG i have been waiting forever for Gov. O' Malley to declare a state of emergency!!!!!!! Thanks O' Malley!

Let's declare a state of emergency so people will run out and get toilet paper!!!

Really, Martin, you could wait to see if it will actually hit here. For all we know, it could be a category 5 heading up the bay, or it could be a thunderstorm.

He'll get into his emergency look for the storm. Always makes me laugh. As soon as he walks in he'll roll up his sleeves and loosen his tie to look like he has been there all night. As soon as the camera is off, its back to the mansion to plan tax increases and gerrymandering for the fall General Assembly.

Anonymous must be a right wing wacko crank who never lived through a hurricane - when will these nut cases ever stop their ridiculous whining? It was exactly the right thing to do - sign me a former forecaster in the Coast Guard who lived through some really bad ones - you cannot be to prepared - and please anonymous write in after the storm and give us your take

Uh… I dare you to look into which party does the most gerrymandering. Bet it's not the blue states, holmes.

OK, if there's looting, it will be interested if the National Guard will be used to stop it and to use lethal force. On the one hand, property rights andpublic order; on the other, keeping O'Malley supporters alive so they can vote against illegal immigant tuition question, and vote for O'Malley and Brown in future elections. Tough choice for a tough man.

It's about time! Thanks! Wheew!

This should stimulate the economy with all the people out buying stuff. From what I hear, Walmart and Target have already been picked over.

If he did not declare emergency, sure enough there would be people complaining about that!

I guess this means schools will be closed tomorrow and government workers will be sent home early.

Praise THE LORD for Marvin O'Mallaby! All you bamas would be like "huh what?" and then BAM a hurricane up in here.

hey ben and bella.
what's this i just read from cnn?
this could be the worst flooding in a hundred years!
maybe you should go out and buy some flood insurance instead of yapping about the gov. doing the right thing.

State of emergency? We'll see. If there's looting in Prince George, or the Baltimore area, will O'Malley's base be shot on sight?

He has no bigger critic than me however he is doing the right thing. This declaration clears a lot of obstacles to get things done and I believe this is the hardest time to be a govenor .First responders,BGE,National guard are putting thier lives on the line .You'll never hear me say it again probably but ,good job Mr.O'Malley.

Hey Ben: You realize that when O'Malley declares a state of emergency, it isn't only for the general population. It's also the sign that emergency response teams and those in the state militia as well as other organizations need to prepare for activation and to help provide disaster relief to the state. It's a call for preparation, not a call that anything will happen.

hey don,

maybe we should exercise a little restraint rather than panicking over ever thunderstorm. Sure, it could be the worst flooding in years.... or it could be nothing. Let's stop wasting money until there is a real story here. I'm not saying there wont be a horrible hurricane with flooding, damaging winds, power outages, etc. But activating the emergency center TWO DAYS before anything hits is just another way for O'Malley to line the pockets of his cronies with extra overtime pay. Saturday morning would be MORE than sufficient, if the forecast continues to show a bad hurricane with a direct hit.

Racism is alive & thriving in the MD republican party.

Remember when Ehrlich declared an emergency and all the democrats chimed in on how he was going to go around killing people? Didnt think so cuz it didnt happen, but dont let that stop you.

Way to build a party full of hatred & wingnuts. That oughta get votes.

Guess those that think he's a wimpy govenor and just wants to try to lok good say the same about New Jersey's Gov. He declaired earlier than Maryland did.... got anyhting to say about that, or the brain still rattled from the earthquake..

There has been a State of Emergency in Maryland ever since O'Malley became Governor!

A storm is coming that could injure your fellow citizens and dystroy homes and property - and all you people can write is the same political-myopic verbal vomit.

COULD WE ALL JUST TRY AND BE A BIT MORE SUPPORTIVE OF ANY AND ALL EFFORTS TO SUPPORT AND PROTECT OUR FELLOW CITIZENS AT RISK ON THE EASTERN SHORE AND HEAR LESS ABOUT YOUR SELF-PLEASURING POLITICO DIATRIBES!

No doubt after the storm you all will find plenty of guilt to lay at the doors of anyone with political leanings different from yours...

Anonymous,

Your 1st post on this thread is priceless!!! State of Emergency look!!! A light colored shirt(probably blue), wrinkled brow, fake concern. It gets no better than that! He may even wear a lumber jack shirt!!

hey ben,

Since you think MEMA could be up and running well by starting to address this emergency on Saturday morning, I am sure you would be the first whiner and complainer if the response didn't match the need. Get a grip. You know nothing about the machinations required to prepare for a possible disaster of this magnitude. As a former MEM A rep for a state agency, I DO know what I am talking about. Thank God you are in the minority that thinks they know it all.

smoot u must be the left wing wingnut because thats what you left wingers do resort to name calling O Malley is just another tax and spend politician that's not even debatable

The aftermath will create jobs lol

hmmm....ben, i think i remember reading 100 years.
maybe there will be more than a few t.s.
besides ben, i think it might take more than a day to get everything and everyone prepared for such an event.
and yea, i hope you weren't planning on running down to o.c. this weekend.
a emergency evacte has been ordered there too.

I think the State of Emergency was decleared mainly to help cover federal assistance $$ to help with clean up costs if it should occurr. Based on the information he has it may be the right choice. I am not a big fan of O'Malley but think this may be the right decision for once.

MOM is making the right call- this storm is a monster.
And believe me I am NO fan of Mister Tax and Spend!

Oh look, it's the Deep Thinkers making a non-political event into a partisan wedge issue. Must be a day that ends in the letter "y".

I am very very appauld about the fact that I have seen some electronic on in areas that did not have no where near the damage as others. I have seen areas where the elderly is STILL w/out power and they have been robbed , etc in the past for the reason that BGE take for EVER to get there power back on. Its ALWAYS IN THIS same spot that get taken care of LAST. That dont make no sense to me!!
BGE was informed at least 10 time about the hot wires being down and they still have NOT been there to assist these people in any way. But as soon as its time to pay the bill. I bet the people get hounded!!! This world is really WHACKED!!!
