Cardin raises $1 million

Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin will report raising more than $1 million in the second quarter of this year for his 2012 reelection effort, a roughly 32 percent uptick in fundraising from the first quarter, his campaign said Thursday.

More than 1,300 individuals gave to the campaign, according to the announcement, and the Maryland Democrat received the majority of his donations from state residents. Cardin will report having $1.8 million in the bank.

Cardin, who is considered a safe bet for reelection by nonpartisan political observers such as the Cook Political Report, had $1 million on hand at the end of April. The latest figures suggest he spent around $200,000 in the second quarter.

“Helping to create and protect quality jobs, keeping our bay healthy and our drinking water clean, and protecting seniors from efforts to slash Medicare and Social Security are at the top of my daily agenda,” Cardin said in a statement. “It’s humbling to receive such an outpouring of support as I prepare for the 2012 campaign.”

Detailed campaign finance reports for congressional candidates are due to the Federal Election Commission on Friday. Cardin reported raising $756,000 in the first quarter of 2011.

Republican Daniel Bongino, the former U.S. Secret Service agent, will report raising about $11,000, according to his campaign. Bongino created his campaign account June 29, days before the reporting period ended, FEC documents show.

"Senator Cardin's early money advantage will not buy him a winning message with struggling Marylanders who are looking for real answers not political games,” he said in a statement.

Unfortunately, Cardin could raise 1/10th of that and he could still probably win by five points. Maryland will continue to get the welfare-state Democrats that P.G. county, Baltimore City, and Montgomery County want as they blindly vote (D) down the ballot.

Bongino launches his campaign in May but opens a campaign account on June 29? Something sounds wrong

You are only required to open a campaign account when your campaign raises $5,000. That is likely when they hit that threshold, which explains the delay.

Why does it sound wrong? Daniel Bongino is a first time candidate, it takes sometime to set up a campaign and before you can start asking for money you have to have a basic campaign set up. Ben Cardin is an incumbent career politician so he already has a well developed campaign set up. What sounds wrong is that only 1,300 people donated to raise over a million dollars. That doesn't sound like small donations from the middle-class marylanders. Its obvious his backing is in special interests and other Maryland Democratic politicians who are paying big bucks to keep that seat blue. The Gov. made donation requests on behalf of Ben Cardin!

Bongino is a fool. Money will not come. Bongino and Murphy are running a terrible campaign. No PAC or National R group will have Maryland on the radar. Only a known candidate with some experience in government or elected office has even an inkling of a shot at Cardin. I am a Republican. The arrogance of both Murphy and Bongino blinds them of their foolish folly.

Bongino leaves 12 years of honorable government service behind to take on Cardin and "Tony?", a supposed Republican, calls him arrogant and foolish. Typical MD Republican politics, suicidal.

Tony? Sounds like Sue Payne again. I can smell the desperation. Sue's only agenda is hate politics & that is why she is only relevant in her small circle, which literally grows smaller by the day.

I agree, Bongino is foolish. Anyone who says their are leaving a secure, prestigious government position with excellent benefits in the short and long run, to run as a Republican in our Blue State of Maryland against an incumbent such as Cardin is either an idiot or being disingenuous: neither are great in a candidate. Especially with a young family?
C'mon, Bongino just doesn't have it together. I'm hoping Pat McDonough runs..

Joan is right. I agree there is no logic to why he left the security and benefit of the SS. Especially in this tough economy where finding jobs is so difficult! Joan, thanks for pointing out to us exactly how ridiculous Bongino's stated premise for entering the race really is. Giving everything up to run for US Senate - no logic there, with a young family to boot!

Lisa and Jane? The games are getting old, everyone knows Pat McDonough's crony Sue Payne has been his desperate surrogate in a pathetic attempt to attack Bongino under various names. Good luck Pat. This is really sad for a guy I once respected. By the way, it is never foolish to risk it all for something you believe in, its career politicans who never seem to get that. I know the guy and he is solid, good luck trying to convince people otherwise.

Lisa, Pat is going to run against Dutch in MD District 2.

WOW, Why must you be a career politician to run for office? I applaud anyone who feels so passionately about serving the public to give up so much to run an uphill battle. And if i'm not mistaken didn't we just have a republican governor? And didn't Michael Steele get 45%? I mean neither of the two were good candidates so if we can get a real candidate like Daniel Bongino in the race we have to do better. And even if a Republican doesn't win, atleast democrats will have to spend money fending us off instead of spending it elsewhere!

Let's see is there anyone else in the state of Maryland who is a Republican and running against Ben Cardin that has already been on FOX and CNN? Who has been able to garner just a little bit of attention? Ummm no.
So is Bongino foolish- or is he somebody with the guts to actually put it all on the line for our country? Let's check out his job history and decide.. NYPD- takes some chuzpuh- putting your life on the line and being ready to take a bullet for two Presidents- I'm going to go with this guy has the cojones to not only stand up to the likes of Pat McD and Sue Payne, but also to the Liberal Democrats...
Oh did you forget that it is a choice between Ben Cardin and a couple of guys who haven't raised much money. At least Bongino has raised some. Matter of fact other than Cardin he is the only one who has raised more than $50. Even the other Democrat took out a loan. So if the brand new guy only raised 11K in his first month- dude get behind him, cause right now he is our only shot!
