Cummings to discuss security at Old Dominion

Rep. Elijah E. Cummings will travel to Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., Monday to meet with college officials there and discuss security efforts a week after his 20-year-old nephew was shot and killed near the campus.

Cummings, who spoke at his nephew's funeral in Baltimore on Saturday, had earlier described the students living in the neighborhood surrounding the campus as "sitting ducks" because of a recent spike in crime there.

Cummings’ nephew, Christopher Cummings, was killed on June 10. He was a junior at Old Dominion. Christopher Cummings' father, James Cummings, will also speak at the event as will Rep. Robert Scott, a Democrat who represents portions of Norfolk.

"sitting ducks"???

Cummings is one who would deny us of our Constitutional right to Keep and Bear arms and he has the balls to claim his nephew and others are "sitting ducks" when he has spend his wasted years as a congresscritter trying to deny us our rights?

It's not the school's fault for any crimes committed off of the campus. Maybe he should look in his own backyard at helping those people in his district. I'm sorry to hear about his nephew, but why isn't out talking with the community and police in his Baltimore district?

Congressman Cummings is a blessing to the 7th District, to Baltimore, to all of Maryland, and takes his service to our country seriously. He is a compassionate problem solver, and has offered more leadership in his lifetime than most I can think of. Take his example to heart and do something to improve your home, neighborhood or community before complaining about his actions.

Am I the only one that finds it hard to believe that this was a totally random killing? I still think that his nephew was involved somehow with drugs, people that killed him knew there were things worth stealing besides electronics or that he did something to make someone mad enough to do this and that usually is drug involved.

Susan, please provide for the readers JUST WHAT this waste of air has accomplished in his years in congress!

Be specific. If you cannot list those than we know your comment is as empty as Cummings' head.

Susan,
I was in Newport News the friday that this happened, and it was reported that the suspect was kicked out of a Frat Party prior to returning with a gun. There was a fight that took place and the loser came back with a weapon...no drugs, just a normal keg party.

Typical congressman...it's never really an issue 'til it hits home. It'd be nice if he'd work as hard on the streets of Baltimore as he hopes to do on the streets of Old Dominion.

Why is it that when someone asks a supporter of a politician to list their accomplishments, the supporter runs away like a Wisconsin Democrat to Illinois?

Cummings is a Tax and Spend, corrupt demoncrat who knows NOTHING about security. We need details on the cause of the young man's murder.

Congressman Cummings' office has provided extensive support to small and minority business community in Baltimore and surrounding areas, for one thing. This is done by connecting business leaders to a variety of development opportunities in Baltimore, and providing education and access. The result is more job opportunities in Baltimore for Baltimore, and has been going on for over 10 years that I know of.

Please name something you've done for your community!

(apologies for delayed response- not available to respond earlier)

Well, thanks Susan for supporting my comment that Cummings is a useless man in congress.

In his entire run all you can come up with is his help for minorities? 10 years and all you have is that?

Seems your expectations of Cummings is as low as it can get.
Kind of like affirmative action, lower the standards and he is what we get.

Good private-sector jobs in Baltimore for Baltimoreans help all of us, as it reduces dependence on public handouts, and helps people get to better lives under their own power. It should be a high priority for all politicians.

I am saddened, Anonymous, that you only find words to deride.

If you don't care for Elijah Cummings, what is it that you hope the politicians would do instead?

"Good private-sector jobs in Baltimore for Baltimoreans help all of us"

Have you NOT read the papers lately? Maryland is last, LAST in jobs.

Cummings has also supported programs to SEARCH and FIND those ENTITLED to government aid. Nothing like digging up people to help them become more dependent on himself and his generosity with OTHER people's money!

Good work Cummings!

Politicians should do ONLY what the people have delegated to them, they are the 17 Enumerated Powers in the US Constitution.

How radical is that?

Hi Anonymous,

Thanks for your response.

It sounds like you are really frustrated with people continuously living off of public welfare programs, as am I.

In my opinion, however, you've mis-characterized or misunderstood the point, as it seems you think that creating private sector jobs would make people more dependent, not less.

Based on the statistic you cite, it seems like we need more leaders (not just politicians) to find ways to promote private sector job increases, good jobs at living wage, and good education to prepare people for those jobs.

Thanks also for referencing the Enumerated Powers, something I have not studied previously
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enumerated_powers

Based on the wikipedia entry, I am guessing you would probably take a more 'strict constructionist' interpretation than I would.

"The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imports and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States"

Perhaps we differ on just how Congress is to go about providing for the General Welfare.

What would you do, or like to seen done to that end?
