Cummings seeks bank subpoenas on foreclosure crisis
Baltimore Rep. Elijah E. Cummings on Wednesday requested that the House Oversight Committee issue subpoenas to six banks he said have refused to voluntarily provide documents detailing their role in the mortgage foreclosure meltdown.
Cummings, the top-ranking Democrat on the committee who has made the foreclosure issue a top priority, said the documents are needed to help the committee determine how the foreclosure crisis unfolded. He said it is his first request for subpoenas since starting in the position in January.
“The foreclosure crisis has had devastating consequences for communities across the country and continues to threaten our nation’s economic recovery," Cummings said in a statement Wednesday. “The banks have admitted wrongdoing, and yet they are now refusing to provide Congress with documents that are critical to our investigation.”
Cummings wrote ten of the nation’s largest mortgage companies in February asking them to turn over internal audits of their foreclosure policies and correspondence with customers who went through foreclosure. Cummings said four companies are responding to the request. He released responses from the other six in which the companies declined to provide the information.
The six companies cited by Cummings are MetLife, SunTrust Banks, PHH Mortgage, U.S. Bank, Wells Fargo & Company and Bank of America Home Loans.
Subpoenas have long been a point of contention between Cummings and the committees's Republican chairman, California Rep. Darrell Issa. Cummings has argued that Republicans have issued subpoenas without giving Democrats on the committee notice.
Frederick Hill, an Issa spokesman, said the chairman will "be asking ranking memner Cummings to provide additional information about this investigation before deciding on the most appropriate next step."
In February, Issa subpoenaed mortgage documents from Countrywide in an attempt to show that the company provided special deals to members of Congress to curry favor.
Former Connecticut Sen. Christopher Dodd, a Democrat, came under fire in 2008 over allegations that he received preferential treatment from Countrywide. A Senate ethics panel later dropped its inquiry, but Dodd nevertheless decided against running for re-election in 2010.

Comments
Tell the idiot Cummings;
The bust of our economy and investment houses was rooted in FANNIE MAE AND FREDDIE MAC. These corrupt quasi government agencies started by presidents Roosevelt and Johnson FORCED banks to cover affirmative action lending to unqualified house buyers. Investors seeing the government backing of these economic CRIMES, jumped in to make profits that ultimately failed. Dems Clinton, Barney Frank and Cris Dodd FORCED banks to make more BAD loans that failed. Bush tried to stop the rape of our economy.

NRB.. false! While fannie and freddie mac were part of the problem, Lehman brothers who are no longer in business was the biggest problem. Followed by AIG who insured every single mortgage out there, and as 91% stake holders in that company we as a country have come to that realization. Your a typical party line voter and your red bleeds through. But like you republicans are famous for saying.. " NEVER LET THE FACTS GET IN THE WAY OF A GOOD STORY." Go back to being brainwashed by Rush Limbaugh I believe hes on in a little bit.

That's an interesting theory, nrb. Have any evidence to support it?

This Socialist Cummings had no such requests of his fellow Congresscritters when those like Chris Dodd and other FRIENDS OF ANGELO'S at Countrywide Loan were getting sweetheart mortgages in return for who knows what!

Cummings is about 20 IQ points away from brain dead.
He has had his OWN foreclosure issues personally as well.

Where oh where is Socialist Cummings on his comrade Maxine Waters and HER ethics ethics hearing that has just disappeared from the planet? Her ethics issues also include mortgages and stimulus money for PERSONAL gain.
Cummings will never call Waters for more info. I wonder why! Is it a color thing?

The videos and information are all over the internet if one actually cares to learn the truth. nrb may have simplified it a little but the record of the hearings through the years and the comments of those he named telling us that FM & FM are solvent and in no danger. We all know that was just wrong.
The info is there for those willing to get past their partisanship.

As an ex-appraiser I can tell you that for a while we were being watched for under appraising the value of homes belonging to minorities. This encouraged us to appraise a little bit high. About the time the mortgage fraud mess came to light we were then accused of appraising the same homes too high. Most of these contradictions were the result of pressure from Fannie or the large banks. Also the most of the appraisal management companies, who I would not work for, pushed for us to make the deals work. While this is a very condensed opinion it was the main reason for me getting out of the business.

And conveniently, by not providing a source or a specific argument it's impossible to refute.

Bush tried to stop the rape of our economy.
Sure thing, smart guy -Commander Texas paid $78 billion more than the actual value of the toxic bank assets during his eight year reign of error. You're better off trying (but still failing) to give him credit for Bin Laden.

Unfortunate, but not entirely surprising, that none of these negative comments actually relate to the current foreclosure crisis. Many factors caused the meltdown, Is Rep Cummings a socialist for requesting information about banks' foreclosure practices or are you just choosing to be disrespectful?

the link provided to the Congressional Progressive Caucus shows his membership in this socialist group. Is it disrespectful to point out his membership in this group of socialists? I don't think so.

Hey Anonymous and NRB - you're doing remarkably well at illustrating the right-wing Republican mantra of tell a ridiculous lie often enough and idiots will believe you. EVERYTHING you say is at odds with the facts - Rep. Cummings is doing what any responsible member of Congress should be doing - the only negative would be showing how Republicans and big business have managed to collude to destroy the middle class of this nation - using character assassination against one of our Country's greatest government officials doesn't change that fact! You and your ilk should be ashamed of yourselves!

"one of our Country's greatest government officials "
????????? He has the IQ of pocket lint. He has children out of wedlock. He is a racist! He is a socialist! He does not represent much of his constituency.
He has had many personal financial issues.
In summation, he is incompetent in the position he holds.

Please write to your government officials, we have to break this silence. They must realize that this is the moment to either save this country and its people or lose it forever! If those responsible are not prosecuted, then how could we ever trust to our legal system again?
Also, here is my open letter to AG Miller - the lead negotiator with the Banks: http://tinyurl.com/3h5kfy9

Fannie & Freddie guaranteed the loans. the subprime lenders new they were dealing shady...lastly the CONSUMER is ultimately responsible for not reading the fine print for themselves instead of relying on a mortgage lender/broker to tell them their options. tsk tsk...hard head makes soft butt. So I think there is enough room to call alot of folks idiots but it will not change the situation.

Sad! It boils down to "trust no one" and hire an honest attorney to look over your mortgage agreement before you sign it including having a forensic audit done, to make sure you have the right to buy the house, and it is not stolen by the banksters and can be owned someday, does not have a clouded title, and check the history of the bank to see if they have committed criminal acts against American homeowners, and the economy. Well that just about does it. No body should trust purchasing a home from most banks. NOT Bank of America, not Chase, not any of them. Investors should not trust any of them either. Any new banks opening up soon? The regulators , the banks and the S&P, and especially our justice system all need to be replaced before Americans can trust taking their mortgage agreements to a trusted attorney to make sure they are not being conned, ripped off, and set up for having the home stolen from them. Home buyers may not even know they have a problem until they try to pay the last payment on the house and can not get the deed.

Cummings is looking at the proposal by Obama to extort $20,000,000,000 from a few mortgage companies to pay off the mortgage principle of those who have failed to keep up their payments. This is rewarding the irresponsible at the expense of all those who have faithfully paid their mortgages and who did not use their homes as ATM's. The poster who said Cummings is a socialist was right on in their comment.
Remember this woman prior to Obama's election?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P36x8rTb3jI
"I won't have to worry about paying my mortgage."
There is absolutely zero evidence even in congressional hearings that the people who have had mortgage companies file bad or wrong paperwork to foreclose, have been paying their mortgages. They have in fact defaulted and nothing will change that.
Just as Obama has extorted billions from BP for what has turned out to not be totally their fault, (most is still in the government coffers) this is nothing short of EXTORTION and exactly what Obama told Joe the Plumber, he is going to redistribute the wealth. And as he said just before the election, "we are 5 days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America."
He is well on his way and must be stopped by any means necessary.

I lost my home and no party are al right or all wrong, but partly Mr. MRB was somewaht correct, Bank hired smart people to work for them and congress or our president enacted law and sign as his duly duty. In the old days banks issue loan only to the rich and the poor are renters, In the late 70's Jimy Carter feel compassionate for the poor community and sing a law (CRA) Community Reinvestment Act in hope to promote poor iner city to move up but until his term out of the office the law had no action and them that handsome guy Clinton enhance this law to make it even easier for loan if not bank got sue left and right for discrimination so on ans so forth so smart banks use the loophole to make money, bank is to make money, no one can say no about that until it was over do, when bank started to lose money due to the lost of mortgage security value some banks started to commited fraud and the domino affect began, so who is realy right or realy wrong just judge it for yourself and vote for those who love their contry and not for their own profit.

Bankers act as if they are above the law and that their bank which is a business entity is a country that they have allegience! Monetary and criminal (against the top CEO) penalties must be levied!! The funds these bankers use are funds from and by the people(in the US and abroad) not out of their pockets, they have gotten things twisted. And, elected officials voted to SERVE AND REPRESENT THE BEST INTEREST OF THE PEOPLE not corporations need to be penalized as well!! We must re establish integrity, honesty and customer loyalty in doing business here and around the world!

Barney Frank was knee deep in the mortgage Fannie Mae Freddie Mac issue.
Now he has admitted he got his homosexual lover a job there!
CORRUPTION is rampant in this regime and it is a criminal enterprise.
"U.S. Rep. Barney Frank admitted he helped his ex-lover land a lucrative post with Fannie Mae in the early 1990s while the Newton Democrat was on a committee that regulated the lending giant — but he called questions of a potential ethical conflict “nonsense.”
“If it is (a conflict of interest), then much of Washington is involved (in conflicts),” Frank told the Herald last night. “It is a common thing in Washington for members of Congress to have spouses work for the federal government. There is no rule against it at all.”
Frank said he helped his former longtime companion, Herb Moses, land a job at Fannie Mae in 1991 after Moses graduated with a master’s degree in business administration from Dartmouth College. Frank said he was approached by a Fannie Mae executive and vouched for Moses, who formerly worked as an economist in the Department of Agriculture."
Posted by: Anonymous | May 26, 2011 11:06 AM
"In an interview Tuesday on WBUR’s “Fresh Air,” Morgensen said Frank “was very aggressive and really tough on those who were testifying in Congress about reining in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac” during hearings after Moses was hired. She said Fannie Mae “rolled out the red carpet” for Moses as part of a strategy to curry favor with Frank and other members of the Financial Services Committee.
Morgensen also noted that members of the committee raked in tens of thousands in campaign donations from Fannie and Freddie execs, including Frank, who received $42,000 in contributions from 1989 through 2008.
Frank denied he turned a blind eye to Fannie until after the 2008 mortgage meltdown."
