Peter O'Malley elected state Democratic chairman
UPDATED, with details of position, below.
The Democratic State Central Committee voted unanimously Saturday to elect the younger brother of Gov. Martin O’Malley to chair the Maryland Democratic Party.
The governor had nominated Peter O'Malley, who managed his 1999 mayoral campaign and was one of the top aides on his gubernatorial campaign last year. Peter O’Malley replaces Susan Turnbull, who led the party for the past two years.
“I am so thankful for this tremendous and humbling opportunity to once again work with Democrats in all corners of Maryland,” Peter O’Malley said in a statement after the vote. “In Maryland we’ve set the standard on how to win, and together we will lead the charge to protect the progress we have made.”
Republican Party Chairman Alex X. Mooney dismissed the selection as nepotism. In a statement, Mooney said the governor has “created more jobs for his family than he has for Maryland over the entirety of his time in office.”
“It’s clear Governor O’Malley is more focused on putting members of his family to work rather than the over 200,000 unemployed Marylanders struggling to find a job,” Mooney said.
UPDATE: According to the Maryland Democratic Party, the chairmanship has always been an unpaid, volunteer position. The party said Peter O'Malley will continue to work, on a paid basis, as manager of Friends of Martin O'Malley.
Shaun Adamec, a spokesman for Martin O’Malley, said the governor is “very proud of his brother, and pleased he’s the chair of the Maryland Democratic Party.”
Part of Peter O’Malley’s role in the recent gubernatorial election was to reach out to other Democratic candidates. As party chairman, he will be expected to help engineer the re-elections of Democratic Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin and President Barack Obama in 2012.
Also elected Saturday were Yvette Lewis of Prince George’s County as first vice chair, Oscar Ramirez of Montgomery County as second vice chair, Robert Kresslein as treasurer and Beth Swoap as secretary.
Before joining his brother’s gubernatorial campaign last April, Peter O’Malley worked for three years as chief of staff to Baltimore County Executive James T. Smith Jr.
In the Smith administration, his job included advising the county executive on political issues, setting his schedule and serving as the administration's contact with other elected leaders in the area.
Politics is a family affair for the four O’Malley brothers, who have all worked on the campaigns of the governor and some of his political allies.

tough job. trying to ensure Cardin and Obama win in MD. nice of him to help his brother out. otherwise, the governor would be embarassed. could you imagine, the chair of the national gov assn might not swing MD to Obama and Cardin if his brother doesn't do this? and, the legislature might be taken over by the Beckites or Tea Party Patriots!
funny, these pols always turn to family. like libya, so goes maryland(or vice versa?)

Happy O'Malley voters? This was promised in the 2010 election,,,wasn't it? A 20% sales tax increase, lying about BG@E rates, the upcoming gas and alcohol taxes just weren't enough! Now it's "in your face", here's my brother! Oh wait, I was against gay marriage before I was for it! If anybody made this up it would be a comedy. Sadly it's what the "new Americans" and those that are more worried about American Idol and The Simpsons voted for!

Reminds me of the Kennedys.

No AT, HE thinks of himself as the next Kennedy. Make no mistake, as he's in the White House shining B.O.'s shoes he sees himself there. In the big picture that's what this is all about! It's about what advances HIM to higher office!

Oh the O'Malley-Curran clan. No strangers to nepotism for sure. Lame. A man with any sense of personal integrity would never appoint/nominate his own brother-- even the appearance of impropriety matters. Shameful. Typical Md. Dems.
(not a republican, by the way, before some party line dem gets their panties in a bunch about sullying the name of the Chosen One. Md GOP is no better from an integrity standpoint, they just don't have as much power as the Md Dems)

Unbelievable - the blatant nepotism from O'Malley continues! He gave his father in-law Joe Curran, a $120,000 a year job with the state insurance fund IWIF now he gives his brother another phoney baloney job. Where is the outrage from the Sunpapers?
What if Erhlich had picked his family member for a govt. job? The Sun would be writing all kinds of critical editorials. Maryland Democrats tell our Gov. STOP the nepotism!

The people's republic of Maryland rolls on....I just cant believe how many voters are snookered by this - I think the people in PG & Montgomery County and Balt City have no brain to think for themselves....

Woodie-you made the forest for the trees Mistake. Peter O hasn't run for this office. Like wannabe Bobby K, his BROTHER put in in a powerful post, though he's been ELECTED to nada, senor.
As some here know, I'm a traditional consevative. Thus, I hold little truck for the blue blood, One World Wall St Friendly Bush Klan, who are just a WASP version of the elitist Kennedys. But at least the Bushes run for office. It's not my fault genetic defectives can be elected under our democracy. I don't believe in democracy except for local matters, and now you see why.

If the Sun paper thinks Omalleys brother is best person for the job why dont they highlight his qualifications. Like his past DWI and other domestic problems. this is clearly as case of nepotism

How is different members of a family running for and winning free elections nepotism?? Let us not forget that O'Malley also awarded his brother a no-bid contract for a shame statistics program.

If it helps a little bit , this state will receive about 450,000 million less from the fed this year,,,,,,,,,,,,,this means fewer hand outs for the Gov's people,,,,,,,,,,,,one more thing to make you smile , the Gov. looses about three hundred votes a year from the city as the dems keep killing each other off,,,,,,,,,,,,it takes time to right the ship , don't give up................

Cardin, Sarbanes, O'Malley--nepotism is alive and well in our one party state. It's the North Korean model!
Posted by: Granden | March 6, 2011 11:04 AM
Good to know all of you know nothing about how the Party works or about Peter O'Malley.
The Chair of the MDP under the last few chairs was an unpaid position. The MDP - like any political entity - is funded through contributions.
Plus nepotism means that Peter didn't merit this job. He's worked with Dems all across the state and has helped defeat every GOP opponent he's come across (including the vaunted Bobby Ehrlich)

If I was a Republican I'd be upset about this too. Peter O'Malley is very good beating Republicans, after all.
But their nepotism charge doesn't stick because Mr. O'Malley's new position is unpaid, and he doesn't gain any power or prestige he doesn't have already. He has long been recognized as the chief architect of his brother's electoral success and one of his most trusted advisors.
The good news for Democrats and bad news for Republicans is that just like outgoing Maryland Dems chair Susan Turnbull, Peter O'Malley is a favorite among the volunteers and activists who fuel the party from one election cycle to another.

I am a Democrat but, I must say what a disgrace the entire Democratic or is that DUMBOCRATIC party is starting right at the top with the fool from Montgomery County Martin O'Malley. What a joke. He is taking Maryland and the citizens down quicker than Obummer, I mean Obama. Wait tile 2012 when the Republicans take over again and put order to this state and country.

Many are using the term nepotism. I disagree. I would use the more relevant term, incestuous.

One O'Malley is WAY too much now we have to have another one? Swell, O'Malley messing up Maryland as quick as he truly can;. Oh wait, he already did. Why the heck was he re-elected.
