Liberal group attacks Rep.-elect Harris over health benefits

In a possible sign of things to come, a liberal organization is going after Maryland Congressman-elect Andy Harris, starting today.

The initial strike, over health care, is somewhat reminiscent of the Republican strategy against Harris' Democratic predecessor. Republicans began attacking Rep. Frank Kratovil before he was sworn in and kept it up for much of his two years in the job.

Americans United for Change says it plans to whack Harris over a comment he made about health care at a Washington orientation session for new members of Congress last week. The Baltimore County Republican became a Democratic target after he demanded to know why new congressmen had to wait almost a month for their health care coverage to kick in.

The "Drop it or Stop it" mini-campaign against Harris, who favors repeal of the new health care law, argues that he should either drop his own government-provided health care or quit trying to deny coverage to others, according to the group's spokesman, Jeremy J. Funk.

"Call Congressman Harris and tell him to stop whining about his healthcare – and start fighting for ours," declares a 30-second ad the group says it is running on talk radio in Baltimore and Salisbury for two days.

At the same time, the group is extending its anti-Harris effort to Facebook users in the First Congressional District, which covers the entire Eastern Shore and portions of Baltimore, Anne Arundel and Harford counties.

Full text of the radio spot after the jump.

Our new Congressman Andy Harris vowed to repeal the new health reform law during the campaign.

So what was the first thing Andy Harris did when he got to Washington?

Harris complained that he wasn’t getting HIS new government-provided health care fast enough.

Say what?

Call Congressman Harris and tell him to stop whining about HIS healthcare – and start fighting for OURS.

If he wants to deny Maryland families quality, affordable healthcare, tell him to start with his own.

Paid for by Americans United for Change.

Maybe Harris can move the freeloaders out of Baltimore County and make safe for the taxpayers.

This is a funny post.

Below are a couple of words my parents would say when I acted like a spoiled brat.

bellyacher, crab, crank, crosspatch, curmudgeon, faultfinder, griper, growler, grumbler, grump, killjoy, moaner, sorehead, sulker, whiner

I wonder what the people who voted for he are thinking. Everyone you vote for KEEP them ACCOUNTABLE.

Opposing the recent health care reform is not equivalent to "deny(ing) Maryland families quality, affordable healthcare." What a non sequitur. Obamacare is full of corporate subsidies and rent-seeking (if you don't know what the concept of "rent-seeking" is, please look it up) and an individual mandate that is noxious to the idea of individual freedom. Yes, Harris is a whiner. The bottom line is Md. should allow competition and let companies from out of state offer health insurance.

A lot of these Maryland familities without healthcare should consider actually getting a job. These liberals make me sick. Maryland has one of the highest taxes in the country and still have a huge deficit after billions in federal stimulis money. Maryland is the Socialist capitol of the country.

Did this same group whine about Charlie Rangel of Maxine Waters for their corruption?

Didn;t think so.

Tom,

Do you support the GOP's proposal to allow interstate competition? Their plan was to define the N. Marianas Islands as a state, and since they have no regulations, all insurance plans would simply move there giving everybody the only option of getting a worthless insurance policy with no regulations...do you really think another state's regulator, even a real state, would care if a Maryland resident complianed to them when an insurer didn't pay a claim? That's why this fallacy of interstate competion is simply a red herring

Get used to it conservatives.

We've had to endure the same kinds of attacks YOU guys made on us; shout downs in town hall meetings, birthers, accusing Obama being a muslim, calling liberals socialists, slamming healthcare, just to name a few things you guys did to us...now we are returning the favor.

And before you point your figner at us for being partisan, take a moment and remember that it was the partisan strategy of the GOP and Tea Partiers that got you the House.

Tony G, four out of five of uninsured Americans are in working families.

p.s. this is USA, bub. Speak English or get out.

Harford county will reelect andy Harris again. He will eventually become speaker of the house. the Democrats keep Pelosi and her Klan in office. Mr. Harris is well respecte4d up here and will gain much more support from this negative ads that they are doing. just a waste of money.

So what choice did we really have? The "lesser of two evils" once again. A pair of dopes.

Who could want this so called health care? Simple logic and the past spells a mess.

Just take a look at the other major ferderal acts that We The People are forced to pay for.

There is Social Security and Medicare to name two. The fraud aside, they are both running in the red, costing taxpayers for generations to come.

If they cannot manage Social Security how in the world should we expect these people to run a national health care business that will run into the trillions?

Bases upon the results........

Sorry, but Harris' individual health benefits have absolutely nothing to do with Obamacare. Zero, zilch, nada. Nothing but a bunch of democrats reaching for something to whine about since they got their collective arses handed to them. Get over it and find something real to complain about.

ok.. maybe I'm not understanding something here. I quit the job I have for a new job and as part of the orientation process, have the nerve to ask my new employer when my new benefits are going to kick in. I guess those of you who are ripping him apart are willing to start a new job and wait a few months before you start any kind of benefits with your new job? Paul D. If 4 out of 5 Americans are uninsured, that would work out to 244 million Americans without health care. The statistics you were quoteing from stated, in the past 2 years 87 million Americans have been without health care for a PORTION of those years. And of these 4 out of 5 came from working families. What that means to me is, maybe people were between jobs, maybe people declined insurance from their employers. But I'm sure most of these people, when it was available to them, took insurance.

I just sent the following email to Congressman-Elect Harris...
Congressman-Elect Harris,

I was completely disgusted to read about your November 16th comment in the Baltimore Sun in which it was reported..."During a briefing Monday on employee benefits for new congressmen, staff aides and family members, Harris wanted to know why he would have to wait a month for his new health insurance coverage to start. 'This is the only employer I've ever worked for where you don't get coverage the first day you are employed,' Harris said, according to his spokeswoman, Anna Nix."

REALLY??! Is this a joke? I lost my job and currently have NO INSURANCE to cover my family. In fact, a few years back I was between jobs after taking a promotion. I had a 6 week period when I had to pick up the full cost of the insurance until my new employer's insurance coverage kicked in. Did I like it? No. Was I grateful to have the job? Yes. Did I complain like a little wimp about not having coverage on Day One? HELL NO! I have four kids and I needed that job. I need a job now and one that carries health insurance. What SPECIFICALLY are you prepared to do to get jobs back for Americans in your state and district? What? Specifics, and please do not include making the tax cut for billionaires/millionaires permanent.

I hope this is not a sign of things to come, but I fear that this kind of selfish thinking is in your DNA.

The real issue here, to me, is one that the liberal groups attacking Harris are missing completely.

What this really shows me is, once again, how amazingly out-of-touch the politicans who represent us truly are.

I switched jobs earlier this year. Guess what? It took 90 days for my new insurance coverage to kick-in. That's a simple reality for anyone who changes jobs. One would think a physician, of all people, would realize this. But Harris is too insulated from real people's problems, being simultaneously a career politican and a prestigious doctor.

So he demands an explanation for a delay in coverage that is common to anyone who is forced to change jobs. Let alone the fact that he is clearly very interested in the government provided healthcare coverage to which he's now entitled. Let's focus on how shockingly little he understands about the real world.

The election taught the american voter nothing. We are the ones who need the assistance, but we let the politicians blind us on emotional issues, rather than iyems with substance. Harris have more financial resources, and support than we do. and he is concerned about when his health coverage will start. He was not worried about the citizens, veteran, or poor person health care starting. The World is laughing at us, when our people will elect someone on how they look, rather than interlect.

O.K. Some of us out there have jobs where your health care dosen't kick in until you're there for 90 days. Most of the jobs I've had, health care starts up pretty much right away. I've never had a job where I've had to wait 90 days before I've had health care. I think the delay is uncommon for most people but maybe I'm wrong or just lucky. But once again he just asked a question that most of us would ask and is getting taken to task about it. Another thing you all are saying is that he's not concerned about the people in his district that elected him. The Maryland General Assembly doesn't start until the middle of January.

Woodie - hating on someone who has a job and asks a simple question about his benefits won't get you another job. I'm sure you would do the same thing. Dr. Harris' political views will create better economic conditions than Obama/O'Malley hope and change B.S. AK - a 90 day waiting period is certainly not a standard time frame so your outrage is a bit unfounded.

One of the biggest problems in the United States is that most health insurance depends on a person having a job. Police and fire protection are not given depending upon whether someone has a job or not, and health insurance should not depend upon employment. In a country as wealthy as ours, health care should be a fundamental right.

Really?,

None of your examples matter since Rangel didn't run on ethics reform. This is more like Larry Craig making a name for himself going after Clinton for his affair and then trying to get some in a bathroom stall himself. This is like Mark Foley legislating against gays while sending explicit text messages to a male page.

This isn't Harris just taking advantage of the perks of a new job as some others here suggest. This is taking advantage of legislation he ran against. He will take his gap coverage until January and then try to repeal the legislation he just got finished using. He didn't just sign up for COBRA here people.

Andy Harris was ignorant in Maryland when he tried to restrict free speech at the University of Maryland. No wonder he didn't read the health care bill, he can't even get through the 1st amendment. He just doesn't know what he's doing. I say that because of his actions, not his party affiliation. I've voted for Wayne Gilchrest long before I voted for Kratovil.

At least I can say he's not my Congressman now that I moved.

Andy is one of the chosen. The peasants should do without their healthcare so he can have his. No mystery here.

Glad to see a Republican being attacked. Republicans have attacked Democrats for years, with little reprisal, both publicly and privately.

Read any of the comments on these blogs to see the typical vitriol directed by Republicans toward Democrats. Even the patriotism of Democrats is questioned. Now that you're back in the majority, Republicans, turn about is fair play.

People can twist this all they want. Harris was only trying to make a point-Obamacare has made no improvement on the existing system.
