Ad War: O'Malley fires two more shots, one in DC
Democratic Gov. Martin O’Malley has fired more shots in this election’s ad war – a contest he’s handily winning when it comes to volume. The Washington Post reported this morning that O’Malley tomorrow will begin airing a television ad in the pricey Washington TV market.
The ad, which hasn’t been released, touts O'Malley's commitment to education, The Post says. It sounds as if it will be a striking contrast to spots his campaign has recently aired in the Baltimore market, including one out Friday, that attack Republican former Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. on his credibility.
O’Malley has been using TV ads to communicate with voters for about two months, cutting more than a half-dozen different spots. By contrast, Ehrlich has had his ads up – two now – for just two weeks in the Baltimore market only.
Baltimore TV viewers are treated to far more Maryland political ads than DC area residents, mostly because of the price difference. And in addition to being more expensive, the ads reach non-voters in DC and Virginia, whereas the Baltimore ads stretch far and wide across Maryland voting blocs.
O’Malley’s newest ad in the Baltimore market came out Friday.
Similar in tone and production to another recent O’Malley spot, it questions Ehrlich’s credibility when it comes to halting taxes and helping working families. That’s an issue of utmost importance to voters this year -- and one where the O’Malley camp likely feels vulnerable in part because of a package of taxes he approved after a special legislative session in 2007.
The new ad features "real Marylanders" talking about how Ehrlich raised property tax, increased college tuition and made $2.5 million in the private sector after his term as governor. It concludes with a man saying, "With this tough economy, we really need a governor on our side."
(The Sun examined each governor’s tax and spend record earlier this year in this piece by Annie Linskey.)
Ehrlich responded Friday in a press release titled “Got Ideas?”
“Martin O’Malley is out of ideas, out of touch, and out of momentum," Ehrlich spokesman Henry Fawell said in the release. "Like most incumbents heading towards defeat at the polls, he is trying to distract Marylanders from his legacy of massive job losses, record tax increases, and ballooning debt that will be paid by our children."
Team Ehrlich also pointed out that O’Malley’s attack ad came out as Ehrlich released a “ten-year plan” -- highlighted in a TV ad -- for improving the state. Camp O'Malley was not impressed with that ad or its companion document.

The sick joke is over...the worst governor this state has ever seen needs to move on...if Owe Malley really cared about the people of this state he would move aside and let the grown ups fix what he has done..

More typical O'Malley. He attacks Ehrlich because he has no record to run on. Unemployment has doubled. Maryland is going in reverse, not "moving forward." O'Malleys biggest claim that he is making higher ed more affordable is a lie. It is not more expensive to go to college in Maryland then it was four years ago. Tuition has been frozen, but fees and room/board have increased. Financial aid has also been cut.

The people of Maryland only have to see the Ad from last election when OMalley pronised that BGE rates will not go up on his watch. Does he think we forgot. do a search on you tube for Omalley and BGE and you can here it is his own words. He is handling this campagim so negative i would never vote for this man. We need to send a message to all elected leaders you failed to listen to us and pass reform that we didn't want. and you want to get reelected. NO WAY

After MOM's record tax and spending hikes in 2007 it was a breeze to hold the line on tuition in Maryland.

Will the Sun report on how Bob Ehrlich is a taking a failed proposed tax bill from 2007 and claiming it as some new O'Malley proposal. Ehrlich's 43 new taxes is a lie.

So Gov. O'Malley is challenging candidate Ehrlich's credibility on taxes?
How about O'Malley's increasing the sales tax by 20%, adding a $1/pack to the cigarette tax, and imposing a monthly fee on MD EZ Pass users, whether they use it or not?
The last example shows why the O'Malley Administration doesn't get it. The monthly fee was supposedly to help cover operating costs of the toll plazas (which are mostly labor costs).
A sensible solution would have been to raise regular tolls and reduce EZ Pass tolls, thus encouraging more local drivers to use the less-expensive automated system, and reducing the need for manned toll lanes, all while improving traffic flow.
The Governor talks big about technology, but is clueless on this and other issues.

Yea, good thing you put that O'Malley reference in your line. Everyone was assuming you meant Ehrlich. Now if you had anything to back up your contention about the "worst governor", we'd be happy to hear it. As it stands, your guy was the one responsible for the biggest four-year tax increase and spending increase in state history. Those are indisputable facts borne out in the state budget documents.

Ernie, you cite all those tax increases, but Ehrlich's increases were far larger. Look at "Revenues" (aka taxes) in the FY 2003 and FY 2007 budgets. You'll see that spending went up 6.6% annually. Guess where that money came from... taxes.
As for EZ Pass, the system costs money to run. Why should I pay higher tolls if I don't use the system. If others get a convenience from it, they should pay for it. It seems YOU don't get it if you want my tolls to finance your EZ Pass box.

Great. 8 more weeks of dishonest attack ads from O'governor. He has already proved that he has no problem lying about his opponent and taking credit for anything good that happens in MD (Grasmick, who he tried to fire, comes to mind). Once safely re-elected, you can bet his next tax increase will dwarf his 2007 record.

Its too bad most middle class Marylanders don't realize that more money came out of their pockets under Erlich than O'Malley. Why is recycling an idiot like him the best that MD GOP can do? Both parties need to dig deep and find individuals that use more common sense. Again we are stuck with the lesser of two evils and I certainly don't want to see "Mr. Middle School drama queen Bobby fees n slots/no slots" back in office.

Come on Bob! Where did you get such a bad haircut?

Property taxes went up mostly because of skyrocketing housing values. His nickel increase didn't cause whatever OWE'Malley's ad says... 49% or something?

Let's face facts - governor is irrelevant in every state because it is an undoable job. Every state is broke, and therefore every governor will cut services and/or raise taxes (call them what you will).
Ehrlich screwed up in his turn because he promised slots and was unable to deliver. Additionally, "fees" were flying all over the place even though they were better than taxes, lol. And his typical GOP worship of the rich is just plain barfarama.
But O'Malley added a percentage point to the sales tax, which is a flat tax and therfore unfair to the poor, and I haven't seen any sock-it-to-'em taxes on the rich as of yet. Still, he spread the misery around by cutting a few workdays of state employees.Plus he may have the slots settled, or so we can hope.
Bottom line - If you like your taxes - or fees! - going up, and services going down, vote for either one. I'm assuming that both are decent men who are caught in an impossible siruation. Additionally, both are looking at this as a soapbox to a higher office.
But the GOP worship of the rich based on the totally phony tea party premise that giving them free money will create jobs tilts the vote a bit towards O'Malley. In the meantime, let the games - and those wonderfully entertainng negative ads - begin!

Maryland voters showed Boobie the door four years ago and slammed it behind him. Why on earth would they open it back up now? NO GOOD REASON! For those MOM-haters out there, non-partisan groups acknowledge that Maryland is in better fiscal shape than most other of the 50 states, and they give O'Malley the credit. In fact, had Boobie stayed in office the last four years, Maryland would resemble a shanty town.
Anyone thinking of voting for Boobie should ask him what he's been up to the last four years. Who has he been "working" for and how much $$$ has he made doing that "work?" He acted like a Wall Street Big Shot the last several years raking in money like the 2% of the richest in America. His TV ad would like you to believe he lives the middle class suburban life. He doesn't.
He was bad for Maryland form 2002-2006, and he remains so today.

You people make me sad with your talk about hair cuts when our country is on the verge of moral/financial bankruptcy? Please grow up, if not for yourself, do it for our future generations.
