O’Malley: Anti-Ehrlich claim a 'tactical' error
Democratic Gov. Martin O’Malley backed away Thursday from an effort in one of his radio advertisements to link former Republican Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. with the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
The spot, which began airing on local radio last month, features a narrator reading key facts about the gusher, and then names oil companies represented by Ehrlich’s law firm. It also included a clip of Ehrlich saying “Drill, Baby, Drill,” without providing the context: He was quoting former Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele, not necessarily endorsing the position himself.
The Erhlich campaign responded with indignation, accusing O’Malley of taking advantage of a tragedy with dishonest claims.
O’Malley, appearing Thursday on WTOP radio, expressed ambivalence about the advertisement.
“What we should not have mentioned was the fact that the oil spill is going on in that ad, and that was a tactical mistake that my campaign made,” he said.
After the appearance, O’Malley campaign spokesman Rick Abbruzzese said the governor “stands by the facts in the ad.” He added, “It is an ad that used a current event to highlight Ehrlich’s record on the issue.”
Democrats and Republicans around the country are using the spill in campaigns. The O’Malley radio spot was criticized on the editorial pages of The Baltimore Sun and the Washington Post.
In a statement Thursday, the Ehrlich campaign said “dishonest attack ads” are the “least important” of O’Malley’s errors.
O'Malley continues to characterize his opponent as a lobbyist, saying that Ehrlich's role at Womble Carlyle as a government affairs specialist is a fancy way of saying influence peddling and that Ehrlich's failure to register with the state shows merely that he is being disingenuous about his work.

O'Malleys comments and dis-honest ad is why this country is going down....

O'Malley says Arizona law suit is too expensive but has he said he is for it or against it. And I need to know before I vote, is he for illegal immigration. I have a lot of friends and aquaintences in the construction and trade business that are out of work because his boss can hire mexicans and latinos for a couple dollars less/hr. and not pay overtime, or unemployment insurance on them. And they don't pay any taxes to the state or federal govt. not to mention ss.tax.

Bob Ehrlich and his "personal" attorney David Hamilton think they have perfected a way to lobby without registering to do so legally. This behavior is fundamentally dishonest and designed to deceive. They both think they are very clever and that they are above the law. Funny - they're both lawyers who swore to uphold the rule of law. Does that tell you anything about Ehrlich???? PLEASE DO NOT VOTE FOR BOB EHRLICH.

When will the day come when politicians spend time giving solutions to the problems instead of bashing their opponent? Then you have voters who go back and forth on who they will vote for without understanding why.

The ad was a lie a despicable. These types of political mudslinging is an act of desperation. Marty must believe he's got a problem to resort to such tactics.

THIS JUST GOES TO SHOW HOW DESPARTE O MALLEY IS. RATS ALWAYS FLEE A SINKING SHIP.

A "'tactical' error?" I guess that's the new euphemism for "lie."

O'Malley is infamous for his dirty campaigning. It's what won him the election last round.....unfortunately. Good politicians run on their on record, no on their opponents.
Posted by: mike | July 15, 2010 10:20 PM
This is O'Malley's way. He's an opportunitst. If this state was mostly republican, he'd be a Republican. He is and always has been out for no one but himself.
This ad is just like the ones he actually won off of last election. They are meant to distort the facts. They are intented to do the same thing as last time, divert the attention away from the Erhlich's rhetoric and politics and associate him with the negative issue of the day. The last time, it was Constellation energy and GW Bush. This time, it's the oil spill. I just hope that this time, those who voted for him look at their lives and honestly ask if they and this state are better off now than 4 years ago. Trusting O'Malley with the future of MD for another 4 years is like guarding the hens with the fox.

O'Malley on the radio for an hour? Where is the outrage? Will Ehrlich get equal time? Why doesn't O'Malley appear on the radio in Baltimore for an hour?
Posted by: Connie | July 16, 2010 5:38 AM
If lawyers are now going to be responsible for everything done by their clients, then perhaps we should find out who Mr. O'Malley has represented in the past? Or maybe we should just try and keep it somewhat clean and honest.

"Tactical error" ??? That's like saying "Well it depends on what the meaning of "IS" is" LMAO
I'm actually astounded that the Ehrlich SIGN REMOVAL shenanigans and now this have not gotten more attention by The Baltimore Sun and other TV news organizations. How is it possible that no O'Malley signs have been deemed zoning violations? Unbelievable.
But I guess they are all in O'Malley's camp. We all know The Sun will endorse O'Malley.
It's a foregone conclusion.
But what is most shocking, even for a majority Democrat state, is that someone actually posted here something supporting O'Malley's phony OIL SPILL ad! TOO FUNNY! What a nutty state we live in with so many nutjobs.
The only thing I can think of saying after reading this...
"Bob Ehrlich and his "personal" attorney David Hamilton think they have perfected a way to lobby without registering to do so legally. This behavior is fundamentally dishonest and designed to deceive. They both think they are very clever and that they are above the law. Funny"
ARE YOU ON CRACK BUDDY?
BOTH THE WBAL RADIO SHOW AND THE OTHER PHONY LOBBYING ALLEGATIONS HAVE BEEN PROVEN FALSE BY EVERY CREDIBLE SOURCE and JUDGE OR COURT.
Only David Zurawik is still fixated on the Bob Ehrlich and Kate+8 shows.
Let it go buddy, you're just making an idiot of yourself just like The Baltimore Sun & David Zurawik does daily.
-- Greetings from the Peoples Republic of Maryland --
PS: I have a feeling this will not get posted so I'll post it on another blog if necessary and it'll get more attention then Baltimoresun.com LOL

This Democrat can't wait to vote O'Malley out. Count me as another Democrat for Ehrlich.

Why do you think everything that you don't agree with is "spin"? It's a meaningless word. If you disagree, why not address the specifics of the argument? Is it because you can't?
I think the ad was poorly done, but the argument is sound. Ehrlich's approach to regulation is lax. He believes in "drill, baby, drill". This kind of approach to regulation is what enabled the gulf disaster and who knows what kind of similar disaster could happen in Maryland because Ehrlich refuses to see that government has a role in protecting the population from predatory or dangerous practices from business. He cares more about business (actually his donations from business) than he cares about the people of the state.

The furloughs for State Employees are in place for FY 2011 (July 1, 2010 –June 30, 2011) and are virtually identical to last year's.
Right off the bat, 5 Service Reduction Days (state workers get 'paid' but give the money right back to the state) + 3 - 5 additional days with out any pay. The net result: a 3 - 4% pay reduction for all State workers. It is being sold to workers as a 1.3-1.7% salary reduction (the 5 service reduction days are left out of the calculation). Talk about fuzzy math.
This is on top of the additional funds we are now pumping into the pension plan (our contribution was raised 3 years ago ).

Sounds to me like MOM is pulling out all stops in a desperate attempt to stave off his impending defeat. Hopefully the people in the state of MD have finally come to realize what a complete phony he really is and will send the proper message with this election.

For IPFrehley, your comment about politicians receiving money from businesses is laughable. Did you know the President Obama and members of his cabinet received more money from BP then any other politician. It is also convient to see that O'Malley did not bash Pres. Obama for taking a month to arrive in the gulf to veiw the damage. Gee, I remeber Democrats losing their minds about Pres Bush not gettin there for three days.
Gee, let me guess if you sit on the left or right side of the political table. Another thing thanks for voting O'Malley and Obama into office, it has turned out great for the state and country.

Why vote for MOM bellefontegirl47?
Isn't he a scumball lawyer too, like his father in law and his wife, the judge?
How would you explain those fundamentally dishonest and designed to deceive deceptive radio ads put out by MOM?
Can't have it both ways my friend.

O'Mallee sickens me. He was dishonest in the "city that bleeds", so we can't be surprised that he continues to lie with a straight face. I need to find a toilet - quick! The two Mikes are the road blocks for progress in MD. I hope the voters are smarter this year.

That's the second tactical error. The first one was turning this state into a sanctuary one.

Shock breaking news: politicians are corrupt liars. Who New?
Posted by: Bill | July 16, 2010 10:37 PM
Someone suggested that Ehrlich violated the law with signs and O'Malley didn't.
That's false on multiple counts.
#1 Nobody WANTS an O'Malley sign, so there are few to report. However he is an entrenched incumbent so I'm sure he still has tons of signs out there so why are none reported?
#2 The Baltimore County law is going is going to be thrown out by a Federal court.
That's a foregone conclusion on free speech grounds, but it's probably not going to happen until AFTER the election is over. Go figure. Think Jim Smith didn't think about that ahead of time? DUH.
So anyone arguing that one candidate violated the law and the other didn't is a complete moron, regardless of party affiliation.
Why is this is not happening in other counties besides Baltimore County?
Because Baltimore County is run by corrupt O'Malley crony Jim Smith who is NOT running for re-election and thinks he can do whatever the F he wants to try to fix this election!
And so far, local media like The Baltimore Sun and local TV staions are letting him get away with it.
In an overwhelmingly Democrat state, you can't tell me that a 15 to 1 complaint ratio on signs is nothing but politically organized and motivated election fraud.
Clearly, O'Malley campaign volunteers and workers are filing these complaints and Jim Smith has diligently had his staff citing Ehrlich supporters for sport to get the signs taken down ASAP.
Anyone who believes otherwise probably shouldn't have keys to a car let alone be allowed to vote or write for The Baltimore Sun.

Fabby,
That law won't get thrown out. Government is allowed to put reasonable time and place restrictions on speech as long as you have a way of getting your message across, i.e. smaller but still visible signs. The county law passes Constitutional muster unless the "activist judges" like Alito, Scalia and Roberts decide to go against stare decisis.
