MD Dem Party claim: Ehrlich violated FCC rules
Republican former Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. -- who may rematch Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley this fall -- violated the "payola rules" during a segment last year on WBFF-Fox 45, the Maryland Democratic Party says in a complaint delivered today to the Federal Communications Commission.
Ehrlich, a regular on the station's "Political Pulse" show, discussed Baltimore-based Cordish's bid for the Anne Arundel County slot-machine facility license in an appearance April 3. But he did not disclose that his firm, Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, had been hired by Cordish to build support for the company's license, the Democrats say.
At the time, Magna was battling to stay in the game. The Canadian company had also applied for the license, but failed to submit all of the required fees. The license was awarded in December to Cordish.
In the letter to the FCC, the Democrats quote the former governor as saying on the Fox 45 show: "We have one applicant, Cordish obviously, that followed the law, that dotted their i's, crossed their t's, and Magna did not, which is why they are now the lone applicant in Anne Arundel County."
Ehrlich, the Democrats say, "was obligated to inform the station of the fact that he was being paid to promote the position of the Cordish Company and ... the station was obligated to disclose that fact to its viewers."
Since leaving Annapolis in 2007, Ehrlich -- a longtime slots proponent -- and several of his associates, including former communications director Paul Schurick, have been employed in Baltimore by Womble.
Jon Cordish told The Baltimore Sun in March that Schurick "and his Womble communications team" had been hired to help with community relations for the Arundel site, though Cordish noted that Ehrlich himself had not been hired.
Ehrlich spokesman Henry Fawell, also now at Womble, says the Democrats' claim "does not deserve the dignity of a response." He said the party frequently dispatches letters to Ehrlich and "anyone who will listen" pointing out what they see as wrongdoings.
"The Democratic Party is paid to feign outrage and to try to invent boogeymen," Fawell said, citing the FCC letter as an example of that. "The problem is, they're not very good at it. I'd encourage them to keep their training wheels on."

I do not want Ehrlich to run but man, talk about desperate! Or just typical progressive BS!
The 3 year long $2,000,000 investigation into his hiring practice was not enough? Now he has not even declared and the LSD's are firing a pre-emptive shot at his forehead? what a MOB!
Posted by: Voters Ignorance | February 4, 2010 1:58 PM
At $2 million, that investigation was a bargain. The Repubs, under Ken Starr, spent $57 million to throw stuff against the wall to frame the Clintons--and found nothing. Dems, on the other hand, overturned Little Bobby Bootlich's corrupt hiring practices. Money well spent! I wouldn't be surprised if this FCC investigation went a little deeper. Everyone knows there are two sets of laws in this country: One that absolves corporations and their Republican bootlicks of all responsibility, and allows them to practice kickback politics. Then, there's the other that the rest of us have to follow.

The Democratic Party likes to rattle its saber for its own sake.
The poor embattled Democratic Party...
This one party state is a disgrace to everything freedom and democracy stands for.
Well Maryland - you got the party you wanted and what did you get for your efforts.
A big tax increase, a budget that can't be balanced with out slight-of-hand and another big budget increase next year.
Watch all of a sudden the budget will be balanced.
Have you ever heard of "Robbing Peter to pay Paul".
And the Maryland voters will continue to put these individuals back into power.
The Maryland politician answers to two entities: the special interest groups that ALWAYS get them elected and themselves.
Hay Maryland do you really think your vote means anything. Once elected they don't even remember your name.
There are a lot of Maryland voters who a COWARDS --- Are you willing to turn your state back over to these hired guns or are you going to take back what's yours...
It's up to you Maryland...

Hey Biff, get a clue. The slots issue is the wrong one to discuss when portraying the Democrats as victims. If they had not put party politics above the needs of the state slots would have been in place years ago. Instead what we have is the typical Democrat managed SNAFU.
States all around are bringing in sports betting and black jack tables, the horse industry is in worse shape than ever and everybody is still going out of state to gamble because there isn't a single slots parlor in the whole state of Maryland yet.
But, you keep believing that a double standard props up the GOP in this state. Rational arguments are obviously not your strong point.

Biff says "spent $57 million to throw stuff against the wall to frame the Clintons--and found nothing"
NOTHING? Lets see, he was IMPEACHED! He lost his law license.
He paid his bimbo $850,000.
He admitted perjuring himself befoer a Federal judge.
He LIED to his family for months.
He LIED to the American people.
He sent his minions out in public to support his LIES.
Well, yea, I guess that's nothing.

"Dems, on the other hand, overturned Little Bobby Bootlich's corrupt hiring practices."
Oh? and what were they?
NOTHING FOUND Biff!
Do people like Biff REALLY exist? Do they REALLY believe what they type? Liberalism IS INDEED a mental disorder that somehow makes one LIE and DENY!

Typical petty Democratic political BS!
They know what's coming and they will try every dirty trick in the book to smear the next Republican nominee for governor here in Maryland. Can't wait to see the upcoming OMalley press releases slamming Ehrlich!
Book passage on the Titanic OweMalley you are going down.

The Dem Party is a joke. Dudes and dudettes grow up.
The former governor stated a fact. He stated it after the application date. He has no political power to choose who gets awarded this contract. Let's have a conversation with O'Malley, Miller and, Busch and find out how much campaign money they received from Magna or Cordish.
Posted by: Imustbecrazy | February 4, 2010 3:22 PM
Forget about Dem. or Rep., do you not think Ehrlich was promoting something that would benefit himself without disclosing his relationship?
He should have been forthright, he cared more about the money then the viewers was talking to..
This was purely personal not a Dem Rep. issue.
I like Bob better the Martin, but what he did was very uncool.

VI,
How did that Impeachment hearing work out?
I guess lying about hooking up with an intern is so much worse than lying to the American public about starting a war based on lies about the confirmed pressence of WMD's.
Get some perspective.
Concerned Citizen,
Do you think Bob Ehrlich remembered your name when he was in the Bahamas during the state's last financial crisis? Oh, and you should look at his budget proposals. Increased spending on the way out the door, not decreased. Someone mentioned drinking kool-aid before, but it's all about picking your flavor I guess.
Posted by: James C | February 4, 2010 3:37 PM
He WAS impeached but not convicted by the Senate.
Straw men are rampant in your posts.
This is 2010 dude. Your still in the 1900's.

It may be a minor infraction by Fox standards, given the fact that they were briefly the official Teabagger Network notwithstanding the fact that the entire Tea Party movement was created by Dick Armey's lobbying firm on behalf of its the health insurance industry clients... but it was still an infraction, and Ehrlich's sarcasm and personal digs were neither a denial nor a repudiation of the Dems' claims.

Hey Biff,The Republicans always tell the truth.Just watch fox news ,Listen to Rush
or Karl Rove. They will set you straight.
Posted by: Old American | February 4, 2010 4:18 PM
Oh, come on. This is ridiculous - laws are only supposed to apply to Democrats. Leave Bob alone; he was just doing what comes naturally.
Posted by: JohnR | February 4, 2010 4:39 PM
What is with all this mudslinging about? That Biff's comment was a real joke. Even I (a Democrat) knew both Clinton's deserved to go to prison, starting from the hushed Whitewater deeds where others less involved took the fall... to the hushed and obscene covered up Vince Foster wash to Lewinsky and a record number of perjury counts.... and fraud and the convictions stand. How soon some people forget. Ehrlich is an ethical puppy dog compared to the Clinton's and Kenned'ys.

give me a break, you people who condone everything o'malley does better get your heads out of the sand. My sis is a support enf. agent for the state; all state workers are being forced to take furlough days- a cut in pay, while soc. services is instructed to kiss illegals butts. They provide them with free health care, interpreters, housing, daycare...you name it-they get it; ALL FREE. Senior citizens and those on fixed income have to fight for any assistance they can get. AND O'malley is planning to close an in patient mental health facility on the Eastern shore which currently houses some rapists and murderers. I know people who work there and take care of these people. Instead of transferring them to another facility, they plan to RELEASE them into the public. People need to do some research on just who the patients in that facility are. O'malley is destroying Maryland just as obama is destroying america. They want to see all of us suffering and begging for them to throw us a crumb now and then.

Biff says "A big tax increase, a budget that can't be balanced with out slight-of-hand and another big budget increase next year."
He's right - that's just the mess that Ehrlich created with his robbing-peter-to-pay-paul slight of hand "budget balancing" . Two weeks after Ehrlich lost the election (months before O'Malley was even inaugurated) the sun reported that the next governor would take office with a $5 billion shortfall for his first term - BEFORE the subprime bubble burst. What did Ehrlich do? he used a one time revenue surplus to fabricate the sleazy political claim that he turned a deficit into a surplus (but only for a few months).
Blow hards like Biff see no reason to let facts get in the way of their opinions. Who needs them?

Things just never change with the Dems in MD. They just can't stand the thought that people are fed up with Marty O'Mugme and can't wait to reinstate Bob Ehrlich as Governor. As anyone with half a brain knew going in, Marty the Moron has failed miserably and needs to be washed away with all of the rest of the garbage in MD state government. Until that happens, NotSoMerryland will continue to be the embarassing wasteland it has become!

This is another example of Republican hypocracy. Bob Ehrlich is all over the airwaves while continuing to raise money for another political run. On the other hand, Ed Shultz has completely ruled out a run for the Senate from North Dakota and the GOP asked to have him taken off the air for "equal time" laws. But I expect no less from the man who took free helicopter rides from Sinclair Broadcasting, who appointed a professional ice dancer, with no college, to head Homeland Security, to believe our laws don't apply to him

The Republican Party is so corrupted in Evil - they know not what they do...or speak.
Posted by: J Edwards | February 4, 2010 10:38 PM
Voter's Ignorance: Beware, the MDGOP will cut your tongue out.
I totally agree with you.
Ehrlic has no ethics and nothing driving him but power and ambition. He is a control freak and that's why he is considering a run. If he does, Maryland better rope themselves in for another 4 years of O'Malley.
Posted by: keyedup88 | February 4, 2010 11:30 PM
Are you all nuts! How did a single bit of info from Bob Ehrlich turn into a political party bashing? If there was ever any corruptness in MD they need to look not at the Governor, but back before our current governor became governor. Like when he was Mayor of Balto City. He should have been overseeing the checks & balance process of the city while Ms Dixon was stealing from the poor kids, etc. Surely, if someone within the city govt knew how to do a legitimate audit this would have been caught long ago! No, he just looked the other way and moved on down the road to Annapolis. Isn't it funny how no fingers have pointed his direction thru out her ordeal! Wow & he thought Kevein Clark was a distraction to the police dept. Talk about rose-colored glasses. Maybe they were painted solid not tinted! MD better wake up and realize We the people need to take our state back before its too late, if its not already! I'd vote for Bob Ehrlich anyday over the jerk thats sitting in Annapolis today!!!!!

Wow! Maryland Dems have their tails between their collective legs and are running scared! Payola? You gotta' be kidding.
Dems, get a focus on Maryland's problems which you caused (starting with Parris' G.' 2002 orgy of spending which we STILL haven't recovered from). Find some answers or you'll be out in the street. And the answer anin't MOM......

You people whining about the Democrats when they accuse anyone of anything and then you play the Clinton card are pathetic. Your boy, Whinin' Bobby, got caught with his hand in the cookie jar - you call it a witch hunt and want everyone to pretend it didn't happen, but you go out of your way to bring up everything any Democrat ever did. Like I said...pathetic.
BTW - what if Whinin' Bobby IS re-elected? His pet project, slots, was legalized. Now what will he hold onto like a junkyard dog with a steak and then whine about because the legislature didn't play nice-nice with him?

Hey you guys,Are the parties for the people or themselves???
Posted by: Old American | February 5, 2010 12:37 PM
Meanwhile, Larry Sabato says that Ehrlich would win if the election were today (http://www.centerforpolitics.org/crystalball/) on his famous Crystal Ball that folks like CNN and the Washington Post use all the time.
When your Governor passes the largest tax hike in Maryland history, your legislation is busy trying to find ways to ax the death penalty, and people are demanding results from your party than of course you have to go negative, and go negative early. Slimy gutter ball politics, but they can't run on the issues, can't run on GWB anymore and so what do they have left? A poetic guitarist who says Just Believe?
Posted by: Ned | February 7, 2010 5:13 PM
wow. most of you sound like un-parented 5 year olds. waah waah waah. BOTH parties are a disaster and you are just bickering over who is worse. Apparently no on cares enough to stop voting the same old garbage back into office. The latest "victory" for independents was voting in a guy who promised lower taxes, more services and less debt. Do any of you geniuses care to take a stab at how that will work?Bottom line is the guys you are defending care nothing about the average citizen because they have massive financial backing they have to pay back in one form or another. Kinda leaves everyone else out in the cold. Now back to your unproductive wheel spinning arguments.
