Poll: Who's your pick for a Republican gubernatorial nominee?

Former Ehrlich speechwriter Richard Cross published an op-ed piece in the Baltimore Sun last week that examined Gov. Martin O'Malley's re-election prospects, and asked the question about whether the GOP had a shot at the office. Cross called Ehrlich the "prohibitive favorite" for the nomination if he wants it, and briefly touched on other potential candidates: Harford County Executive David Craig; Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold, state Sen. E.J. Pipkin and RNC chairman Michael Steele.

Within months, the 2010 elections will be in full swing. It's not too soon to be thinking about candidates. We've set up a poll for you to select whom you'd like to see as the Republican nominee to take on O'Malley (presuming the incumbent seeks re-election); and whether you think O'Malley will be re-elected.

Click here to take the poll, and please come back and post your thoughts here.

Ehrlich is afraid of O"Malley and will run for Senate.

Redmer is afraid of O'Malley and will run for County Executive

What about Jennings?

The boy gov will be relected only because this state has such a short memory and any Republican if they won would be in the same position Ehrlich was. The R would not get anything they wanted because of the dem control of the state.

Overrides of vetos, stealing legislation, calling something immoral until it is your own idea etc.

It's interesting that, even though this is an unscientific poll, O'Malley is winning question 3 by about the margin I bet most people would predict. Tells you how predictable MD politics are and have been in my lifetime (44+ years). I would love for the Maryland Republicans to be strong enough to keep the Democrats honest but as long as the national party's past use of the tatics of Nixon, Lee Atwater, and Karl Rove continue to taint the party in the eyes of minorites, the Republican Party in Maryland will continue to be a true minority party, with occasional successes like Ehrlich.

None of the above for me.

If I have to I'll write in Mickey Mouse unless some new blood surfaces between now and then.

"Mickey Mouse"?

He is already Gov Carole!

I just took the survey and looked at the results. I was shocked to see that the voters say that O'Malley will be re-elected. I think it saids alot about the voters of this state. They are Zombies that blindly follow the Democrats no matter how bad it gets. I am not talking about the national issues but rather the local ones. All you have to do is walk down Wilkins ave and see what our city has become. Dirty, ill kept, run down with drug dealers everywhere. Poorly run schools and our prison systems filled to capacity. Meanwhile the democratrs have controled this city and state for years and have gotten us no where. Look at the example of the Lottery, if the democrats had voted it in while Erhlick was governor we would have alot of money in the coffers. But they refused and now we can't get anyone to pay the lic fee. Go ahead and vote for a democrat and doom your sons and dqaughters to many more years of misery.

I have to agree with Fed Up. Ehrlich.
would be foolish to run. We have to up with Miller and Busch again. I would not wish that one anyone.

Maybe either Harford County Executive David Craig; Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold might have a chance.

But people will probably vote for Owe' Malley becuase they will forget the $1.8 billion in taxes. We are paying more in BGE prices. General Fund Revenue is down so low becuase of the increase in sales tax.

Maybe we get lucky and someone will beat MOM in primary.

Why isn't a woman on your list? My goodness, there are wonderful women leaders in this state who would do a remarkable job as governor. After all, like her counterpart Ellen Sauerbrey in the House, Senator Nancy Jacobs has done a good job as the first woman Senate Minority whip, and would make a terrific governor. To get away from the Good Ole Boys Network, we might just need take the "boys" out of it altogether!
-----------

Donna:

If Sen. Nancy Jacobs were interested, I'm sure she could mount an effective campaign. True, the list did lack a woman. But it included the two elected Republican county executives (both male); the last governor and lieutenant governor (both male) and a gentleman who has expressed interest. To my knowledge, Sen. Jacobs has shown no desire to seek higher office.

Nancy Jacobs? I thought she was going to retire? Anyway, her staff have blogged stuff that make Joe Steffen's free republic posting look like child's play.

I think Donna has a point. Lets hope one of the woman will run for Governor.

The question is how many women will consider running for Governor against O'Malley?
