Paulson takes a state job

Laura Smitherman reports that David Paulson, the spokesman and happy warrior of the Maryland Democratic Party for the last two election cycles, is taking a job starting tomorrow as communicaions director at the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

"I can't stay at the party forever," he said He noted that Dems have had successful election results in the last two cycles. "I've done pretty much all I can do."

Paulson isn't exactly an apolitical choice for a generally apolitical agency. But not a lot of people in the state can boast his list of contacts among the state's media. He certainly leaves big shoes to fill at the state party.

Big shoes from such a little, little man. Where will WBAL (TV) news get their insider info now that Mrs. Donna Hamilton has a new gig? Oh that's right, Arnie Weiner can fill in the gap with Deb.

Big shoes? How hard is it to lead the democratic party in this State?

Let me get this straight, someone is appointed to the head of DHMH - the State regulatory agency incharge of regulating, Dentists, Physicians, Psychiatrists and Pharmacists, among others - and the person's most notable qualification is "his list of contact's among the state's [sic] media"? Seriously, this is all there is to say? This is pathetic. This is cronyism at its worst. O'Malley would be ashamed of himself if he knew what shame was. Paulson should be embarassed to accept this position.

Where's the Sun's editorial board on this? At least at the national level, the Sun can be excused for barely, if even, mentioning our new President's double speak (2 major appointments withdraw in the same day for similar reasons - reasons which should have derailed our new Secretary of the Treasury, but why should he have to pay taxes?, and this story doesn't qualify as front page news for the Sun?), after all, 88% of the country is still feeling the effects of the inagural kool aid - meet the new boss people. However, letting this story go, in the Sun's own backyard, it almost makes me think that there is a Democratic bias at that "news" paper.

Dear Rob:
Please read the clip again. Paulson is not going to be secretary of DHMH. He is going to be the spokesman and director of communications for the agency. He is qualified for that job.
