Global warming protest frosted with snow

It snowed, but they still came. A heavy snowfall blanketed a global warming protest outside the State House in Annapolis this morning, but it did not dampen the shouts of about 400 activists who urged lawmakers to pass the nation's toughest greenhouse gas control law.
As supporters waved signs, chanted and banged drums, 18 legislators walked down a symbolic green carpet to sign up as co-sponsors to a bill that would mandate that all businesses in Maryland cut emissions of global warming pollution by 25 percent by 2020 and 90 percent by 2050.
"We are going to pass this bill this year," said State Sen. Paul Pinsky, a Democrat from Prince
George's County and chairman of the senate's environmental matters subcommittee. "We are
not going to rest, we are not going to stop....We are going to keep going until we pass this
bill."

Pinsky and co-author Del. Kumar Barve, the house Democratic leader, proposed a similar
but unsuccessful Global Warming Solutions Act last year. It would have created a
system of financial rewards and punishments (known as a "cap and trade" system) to force all businesses to reduce their emissions.
The Maryland legislature over the last two year has approved more limited cuts in carbon dioxide pollution from coal-fired power plants and cars. Together, these add up to an expected 25 percent reduction.
The Maryland Chamber of Commerce, Constellation Energy and many Republicans oppose the 90 percent mandate, saying such aggressive regulation could cripple the states economy if
other states don't have such limits.
"It would be harmful for employment," said Senate Republican Leader David R. Brinkley.
"We have a conscientious business community, and nobody wants to contribute to pollution,
but these guys are intent on making Maryland uncompetitive."
Rob Gould, a spokesman for Constellation Energy, the state's biggest owner of power plants, said federal or international regulation of greenhouse gases makes more sense. And he suggested that power shortages could result from excessive state regulation. "Constellation Energy is very supportive of federal and international regulation. Our concern with last year's bill was that it limited the ability to trade to sources inside Maryland. Given that the only way to reduce CO2 from non-nuclear power plants is to run those plants less, our concern remains that a single small state like Maryland cannot meet these aggressive targets without reliability impacts occurring."
The U.S. Congress is considering legislation that would set up a national system of greenhouse gas reductions through a "cap and trade" system. But the Bush administration has opposed any mandatory limits in part because China, India and other economic competitors of the U.S. have refused to impose cuts.
California has approved a law with an 80 percent reduction by midcentury, and Maryland's law
is modelled after this proposal. The bill would order state agencies to come up with a variety of regulations to increase energy efficiency, encourage mass transit, discourage the burning of fossil fuels and boost clean energy.
After last year's bill failed, Gov. Martin OMalley appointed a climate change advisory commission that recommend that the state adopt a California-style program and cut greenhouse
gases by 90 percent by 2050. A spokeswoman for O'Malley, Christine Hansen, wouldn't say this evening whether the governor would support the Pinsky/Barve legislation, but said he is going to look "very seriously" at the bill. "The governor knows that we need to work to address global climate change," Hansen said.
Many of the protesters who endured the cold to chant "Stop Global Warming!" said they
didn't think the snowfall conflicted with their message. Davey Roegner, a 22 year old student at the University of Maryland College Park, beat on an African Djembe drum to rev up the crowd. He said the snow was a "gift" to remind eveyone about how rarely Maryland has been blanketed with beautiful white in recent years as temperatures have increased.
"It's only the second snow of the year, which is very sad," said Rogner, from Silver Spring. "Global warming is the most important issue of our generation. The state of Maryland should be taking a leadership role in it, because of our vulerability with all our shoreline."
Barve said the snow was a good sign: "At least we have weather appropriate for winter time, finally."
The 18 legislators who "walked the green carpet" to co-sponsor the "Global Warming Solutions Act" included: Senators Frosh, Rosapepe and Pinsky; and Delegates Hecht, Nathan-Pulliam, Cardin, Stein, Bobo, Barve, Carr, Waldstreicher, Manno, Mizeur, Barnes, Kullen, Anderson, Neimann and Ramirez.
Claire Douglass, Maryland driector of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network, told the cheering crowd: “Maryland is the third most vulnerable state in the nation to sea level rise. With over 3,100 miles of coastline, it is our job to protect it.”
Dr. Cindy Parker of the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health said: "I’m a physician, why am I here for a rally for an environmental bill? It’s not an environmental bill, that’s why. It’s a health bill. This is the biggest threat to our health of anything going on right now, and anything we expect this century. We have to pass this bill for our health and for the health of everybody in the world and our children and their children."
Ted Rouse, an owner of the Baltimore-based development firm Struever Brothers Eccles and Rouse, and a leader of the Chesapeake Sustainable Business Alliance, said: "You can make a profit while looking after the planet. There is opportunity in this bill for business. So business supports this bill as well."
Reached by phone, a spokesman for the Maryland Chamber of Commerce disagreed. Will Burns, director of communications for the chamber, said Maryland should not impose restrictions that companies in Virginia, Pennsylvania and other regional states don't face.
"With an issue like this, its best not to act unilaterally. It's best to act regionally, so that you’re not stepping out on your own," said Burns. "Our economy is not like California's...You certainly would put Maryland at a disadvantage when it takes such radical action alone.”
A nonpartisan analysis of last year's proposal, by the Maryland Department of Legislative Services, said the law would impose new regulations on "all businesses, small and large" across the state. "Accordingly, costs could increase significantly, but any such increase cannot be reliability calculated at this time."

Dr. Cindy Parker is mistaken if she really believes that "global warming is a health issue. Warmth and temperance in weather terms accounts for good health and less compromised patient base with terminal or chronic illnesses. I know that in every locale I have lived in, deaths because of the weather were elevated more in winter than summer. In fact, I found that many of my clients in AZ moved there to have the more temperate climate even if having to brave the summer heat because it was so hard to get warm in winter but a cool bath or a fan could cool in summer. Please end the hystronics and lets discuss the cycling of weather in a real time appropriate and historically correct way. Remember, Greenland was named that for its beautiful green valley and its lush flora (National Geographic' IMAX movie-"The Vikings")

Hey, this is great news for people living outside of Maryland. They'll pass these Draconian measures forcing businesses to flee the state making those jobs available elsewhere.
Thanks, Maryland!

It's all about the money.

Sure, we've had climate for 4 billion years before mankind arrived on earth; and it's been exactly the same all that time till, we mucked it up by expelling out carbon dioxide every time we breathe. When are these quasi-socialists and Stalinists going to be honest about what they want. State control over everything. Higher taxes for everyone. And returning to the good old days when the average life expectancy was 30 years old.

Global warming activists who know nothing and believe only what they are told. Global Warming is a religion because people believe in it when there is no PROOF and while there is REAL proof and common logic against it! They don't listen to the scientists who have proved global warming to be a hoax. Also, if the world is "warming" then why the heck is it all cold and snowing? Purely stupid. They have no life and want to take the rest of our freedoms away for there religion!

These arrogant environmentalists probably think they are the first to try to "change" the climate, but this is nothing new. Primitive man blamed changes in the weather and enviroment that he couldn't understand on not giving enough offerings to his gods (Oh, that volcano just has to be our fault!). Medieval man blamed the same climate changes on his own sinfulness (God is punishing us with this drought!). So modern environmentalist man blames his own pollution for the supposed wrath of Mother Earth. Scratch a modern man, and you'll find the superstitious primitive right underneath the surface wanting to feel in control of nature by blaming himself for any changes he can't understand. The comforting illusion being (just like with our ancestors) that if we are to blame for the problem, then we can fix it. The last thing these people want to hear is the truth that climate change is the result of cycles in the Sun's output of solar energy and wobbles in the Earth's rotation (that's why there has been a long cycling of warming trends punctuated by ice ages). They have no control over that, and it really scares them! But instead of trying to stop climate change (which we can't), the wise thing to do is put our efforts into adapting to it. Because it's going to happen whether we like it or not, as it has over and over for as long as this planet has been around.
Posted by: CEW | January 17, 2008 9:18 PM
I don't understand these "ironic" headlines about global warming protests on a snowy day. Cold weather isn't proof that global warming doesn't exist. Global warming isn't about the weather on a particular day. It's about gradual (and subtle) climate change.

They probably believe that government can fix health care, lower the price of fuel, eliminate poverty, pay for their retirement, take care of their children and get everybody a job, except for them. Why? Because then they would not have any time to travel around and demonstrate against the "cause de jour!"

O.M.G.!!! ALERT!! ALERT!! Naysayers always seem quick to jump on global warming when they see a big snow storm. Our weather is definitely out of whack. A week ago in Maryland it was 70 degrees - one of the hottest January days on record.
There is much going on that they choose to be blind to, they don't seem to care that this world is on loan from our children.

Does anyone else see the irony of a Global Warming protest during a freezing snow storm? By the way, Humans emit CO2, a greenhouse gas, are we to be limited too?
Posted by: Greg Jackson | January 17, 2008 10:03 PM
The whole agenda behind blaming ourselves for the eventual destruction of the planet is so far fetched, it frankly borders on science fiction in my mind. While I agree there could be natural warming occurring in places like the Arctic, it is in fact cooling in Antarctica. Greenland received the name from the Vikings, not because it was white, but because it was green.
Natural global climate change has taken place since weather existed and certainly long before man's industrialization. Carbon dioxide is what we all exhale as humans and is a natural part of the planet's makeup. All plant life NEEDS carbon dioxide to survive so it can produce additional life supporting oxygen. So, with that in mind, should we assume that man made global warming advocates want some, or eventually ALL of us all to stop breathing to save the planet?
Assuming we DID have the ability to destroy the planet, then we certainly should have the ability to control the weather and stop these recent horrific snowstorms and deadly record cold temperatures, not to mention the deadly tornadoes that raced through Florida a few weeks ago, shouldn't we? Of course we certainly do not, and never will have the ability to control the weather or destroy the planet earth.
What I DO agree with is that we most certainly have the ability to destroy ourselves. Even in unfortunate event of a worldwide nuclear holocaust, surely man and most every living thing would perish but the planet itself would not. It would survive and in time thrive at some
point in the future. In my mind the REAL threat to all of us today has nothing to do with natural causes. It is the very real, very dangerous threat of Islamo-Facism terrorism. It has already changed the face of Europe and many other parts of the world and if allowed to go unchecked, it will certainly destroy life as we know it as a free, God faring people and a LOT sooner than any perceived man-made global warming.
Unfortunately, most of the main stream media outlets have a very biased agenda supporting the notion of man made global warming but for the life of me and to what end, I'll never understand. I do know that a lot of it has to do with money, money that will continue to go toward supporting anti-American, anti-capitalist movements around the world.
I'll get off my pedestal now, but I encourage you to read the following
Senate report that is one of many that challenges the whole
notion of man made global warming.

Posted by: Brian Hayes | January 17, 2008 10:10 PM
To whomever may think,
Personal greed once again triumphs over the facts. Satellite data fails to confirm a global warming disaster and despite freezing temperatures the factually challenged demand costly government controls on average citizens to combat a problem they cannot even prove exists. Al Gore and his buddies at Occidental Petroleum would benefit from this cap-and-trade or scam. Gore after all would be slated to run the program (convenient and profitable). Potential rivals would be driven from the market and prices would rise. Gore wanted $10 per gallon gasoline in his book "Earth in The Balance." It looks like the rationally challenged American citizenry just might give it to him.

Most people don't realize that global warming actually causes colder, and more brutal winters, as seasonal changes in the ocean temperature are more drastic than they are without the warming. The bitter cold and snow we're seeing is a direct result of the climate change.

If this isn't a gag and these miscreants are actually staging a real protest against so-called “climate change”, then they’re not only arrogant but are genuinely stupid.
Fools who believe this global warming obvious hoax are nothing more than dupes and useful idiots for the international leftist intrigue. They should be humiliated by their own actions proving themselves to be flagrantly naive in supporting the forces of global fascism.
The new Romney Administration will no doubt set to work putting this once great nation back on track again. Among the first efforts will hopefully be to strengthen the United States of America as an independent and sovereign nation once more. The endeavor should include lands and territorial waters re-opened for renewed petroleum exploration and drilling. Construction of refineries and production facilities for gasoline, bio-diesel, hydrogen fuel and other energy sources. A national building program for modern nuclear power and state of the art coal fired plants. The nation runs on electricity and we need more to grow and enhance the quality of life for the people.
Fact is, there is no climate emergency except perhaps within the squirming brains of regressive liberals. Might endeavor to gather some independent information and then try to reach a conclusion on your own instead of following the horde of official stooges. They call this process, “thinking” and sometimes it actually can be fun. In the meantime, I saw a bumper sticker last week that was pretty good. It said, . LIBERALS ARE HERD ANIMALS.

Without the old religions something must take their place. No amount of reality will shake the true believers. Truth is global warming would be good. Global cooling would kill BILLIONS. Not even cooling, just ice. Ice ages are not caused by colder weather, but by more precipitation. Once the snow makes it through the summer in even the smallest patches, it is almost unstoppable.

As much as they want to go back to the Ice Age, I don't think it can happen, atleast not for a long time. And as much as keeping the water/air clean is important, you can't ask somebody to do the same thing and use only 20% of the energy they normally use. There's a certain logic missing here.

You can’t have global warming if the global temperature hasn’t increased in 7 years – it’s over for this cycle. We all know that everything in nature is cyclical so should we now be worrying about global cooling and the need to pump more C02 into the atmosphere?

Yes it's now called climate change. We used to call it seasons. Spring, summer, fall, winter, spring, summer, fall, winter, spring,......See the pattern, four times per year you have the opportunity to scream about climate change. Personally, I'm looking forward to the global warming (spring), it's been in the teens and twenties for so long I was starting to believe we were in an Ice Age. Thankfully, the earths orbit is returning to a closer proximity to the sun and warming will magically occur over the next few months.

Just to echo Dwight, thanks Maryland and the other blue states. The more regulations and taxes you pass the more businesses and jobs come my way.
Posted by: Chris | January 18, 2008 2:08 AM
They won't be happy until all businesses (and jobs) have moved out of the country. They don't comprehend their knee-jerk reactions to climate change. When most businesses (jobs) have gone to China, they'll then turn their attack on homeowners who use gas or oil to heat their homes. Standby and watch. That big sucking sound is blue collar jobs leaving the U.S.
Posted by: Christopher Mellon | January 18, 2008 2:33 AM
Of course we realize it's "climate change"! We also realize there is nothing new to this. The climate always changes! Trying to keep it constant is what is unnatural and dangerous. But capping CO2 is a knee-jerk reaction to "global-warming". So the irony is still there.

Yeah, that's why whenever there's an unusually warm day in January, nobody freaks out that "climate change" is going to kill us all.

The inept Democrats (redundant) of Maryland better hurry up and pass their ‘Climate-change’ legislation before their population freezes to death.

The general public is never content unless they have some crisis to worry about. An intelligent climate doomsdayer with any foresight should begin crisis front running with warnings of global cooling. They may call you crazy right now, but in time, you'll be considered a climate guru. This cycle is peaking and should begin reversing sometime within the next ten years. The hysteria has already played out, and hundreds of scientists are finally coming out of the woodwork condemning it. Sell global warming. . . . buy global cooling.
Posted by: Dave B | January 18, 2008 3:12 AM
I love how the author "qualifies" the flood of comments as coming from "Drudge readers", as if we are all crazy conservative nuts who want to kill the planet.
The Drudge Report rarely posts its own articles, simply linking to various articles from other news agencies (such as your own article!). There is no bias in articles chosen; I have seen the whole gamut of articles from all points of view linked on Drudge Report. If there happen to be a plethora of articles about a lack of warming over the past couple years... maybe you should wake up and re-evaluate your assumptions.
And to Matt LeBlanc, nice try but you just look like an idiot. "Climate change" most certainly means "global warming caused by humans" to Al Gore and family. They certainly aren't saying carbon emissions are cooling the atmosphere (although I wouldn't be surprised to see a shift to that in a few years if things don't start heating up...). As for the whole issue of abrupt climate change (those trying to blame any and every sort of natural weather phenomena on global warming) this is even more fiction than the whole concept of anthropogenic global warming, which is saying something.
Where's the evidence for any of this? No one can come forth with any kind of real evidence for ANY of it. If you think Al Gore's movie is evidence, well, let's just say you need to look up the definitions of gullible and pseudoscience.
It is hilarious to see these uninformed liberals try to patronize and belittle any skeptic of anthropogenic climate change when not only are the vast majority of them not even close to being scientists, but they most likely haven't even read a real scientific study by these supposed "genius" scientists who invented the global warming propaganda machine. I've read everything I can find on the subject and haven't seen a damn thing that comes close to linking humans to any kind of significant climate change!
Furthermore, you should be happy Drudge linked to this article. At least you'll get thousands of times more visitors than otherwise... or do you not want people scrutinizing your work?

hey Mike - Who is John Galt?
He's the man of immense scientific ability who set out to stop the engine of the world - and did.
That engine is a man's mind. His right to live for no other man's agenda - life as defined by using the power of his mind and enjoying its product.
These anti-industrialists have been carried out of poverty on the coattails of the men of science since the industrial revolution. Now they wish to turn the tide back to barbarianism and emotion. First they designed a future. They're clever to twist science as their means to their end. They fall back on duty to God. or Children. or brothers. The 3rd world would love skipping 300 years of achievement via our 'clean energy transfer' to them.
This man-made global warming movement is the most convenient organisation to seize the throat of all of man's activities and achievements, because they know what they can cripple if they control CO2. They will call it 'market-style' regulation, when in reality the productive man will support the others and who will again be taxed for doing so. The 'stick and carrot' is one tool: a thug's gun. They only have power if you assume their guilt. Make them fight for it and we'll see who's the evil on this earth.
Posted by: Ragnar | January 18, 2008 3:16 AM
"Global Warming's" not working so you come up with "Climate Change" so that any type of storm can be blamed on CO2.
Anyway, you impose these regulations on your business' and you will have less business' when they move to another state.
Another thing, polution here is nothing compated to other countries. I've been to Korea and almost threw up from the polution they had while burning rice (smelled like burning feces).
Stop with this ignorant agenda. You are costing people too much money. Except Algore who is making a killing with this bulls***.
Posted by: Drudge Reader | January 18, 2008 3:18 AM
"Global Warming" is an effect of the GLOBAL average. It doesn't imply that all temperatures everywhere are going to go up.
The rapid melting of the Arctic ice-pack, and now the Antarctic ice-shelf, and the overall retreat of the glaciers worldwide, are a much truer picture of what is going on than a few hotspots and coldspots.
The science is, unfortunately, pretty clear. With the amount of carbon-dioxide humanity is producing and releasing into the atmosphere, it would be surprising if GW were NOT happening.

I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone thinks that snow in winter in the northern hemisphere somehow undermines the credibility or validity of a demonstration about global warming (more aptly "climate change"). On the other hand, the validity of concerns about climate change probably get lost in the simple irony. Perhaps a more suitable -- albeit wordier -- term like "global meteorological extremes" would be more suitable.
While I am willing to agree that climate change occurs naturally (i.e., in the absence or in spite of human impact), it is profoundly STUPID to think that humans have no significant impact on the environment or the climate.
Clearly we cannot actually prevent change, as change is inevitable, whatever the cause. On the other hand, perhaps we can help to manage those changes considering the impact the more dramatic potential changes could have.
A 20 rise in sea level would be the end of much of South Florida, and perhaps some would say that that is no bad thing. I suspect the people of South Florida might see it differently. More importantly, the danger extends well beyond South Florida.

About 30 years ago, a "consensus" of climate experts feared global cooling because the temperature had gone down so dramatically in the 1970's. One recommendation was to darken Greenland in order to absorb more of the sun's heat and MELT the ice cap! It was going to save the world. Now we have to stop the melting ice cap - to save the world. Please save the world from the climatologists.

Posted by: Fargin Bastiges | January 18, 2008 7:19 AM
Scientist has claimed that North America was once coved in lush tropical type forests. There is evidence of this in the deserts of the southwest. They have also claimed that North America experienced an ice age. Now, I'm all for taking care of the environment use only the natural resource that we need, clean air, clean water, don’t litter, don’t pollute and so on. I also feel that we should be looking for alternative fuels. But I don’t feel that man has created “GLOBAL WARMING”. This earth has been around for a long time, it will do what it wants to do. There is so much that we don’t know about its creation and history. Why are there those that feel they know so much about it? For those that were around in the 70’s, we where supposed to be going through “GLOBAL FREEZING” then. Once again, this earth will do what it wants to. If you will remember, last year the “GLOBAL WARMING” conference was canceled last year in Washington D.C. due to cold icy weather!!!!!!

Greg Jackson queries: "Does anyone else see the irony of a Global Warming protest during a freezing snow storm? By the way, Humans emit CO2, a greenhouse gas, are we to be limited too?"
ANSWER: Humans are the proximate cause of the rise in CO2 in the last 100 years or so. Plot the annual value for CO2 (Mauna Loa) against the annual value for global population since 1959 and the statistical correlation is 99.85%, which is almost perfect! Clearly, the sum total of all human activities is the cause if the steady increase in atmospheric CO2. Question is: Has this increase been enough to alter the climate over this same period of time? Don't think the answer is clear...yet.

AGW is a complete HOAX predicated on the global redistribution of wealth.
1) The data in the IPCC is useless. This is a policy statement prepared by politicians. They add enough "science" by "scientists" to make it appear credible. These "scientists" were paid by these politicians to produce this policy statement. It you don't see an inherent problem with this, don't bother reading any further.
2) The IPCC report had to be "amended" over and over again. The hockey stick graph has been eliminated, owing to the fact that it was discredited about as soon as it came out. In the beginning there was a statement in the IPCC that there was NO evidence that man was impacting climate change. This was removed as it did not fit their agenda. Several scientists left the panel when they saw the inaccuracies and exaggerations in the report. At least one scientist sued to have his name removed.
3) There are several petitions signed by more than 400 scientists, and thousands of people, that do not agree with the IPCC. There were about 52 "scientists" with the IPCC. There is NO consensus! If you were to poll scientists "anonymously" the vast majority would not agree with the IPCC. It must be anonymous so they won't lose their funding.
4) The models they used do not take in to consideration such things as solar activity, precipitation and cloud cover. The models themselves are not worthy of any consideration with out those three elements. Think about it, the three elements that OBVIOUSLY influence the temperature the most aren't even addressed.
5) Thus, this report is so fundamentally flawed that any true (non government funded) scientist would disregard it. This report is based loosely on "correlation" only. Correlation does not mean causation! There was just an article published that owing to the fact that there are fewer pirates there is global warming, same correlation.
6) AGW doesn’t even pass the most basic “smell test”. CO2 makes up .004% of the atmosphere, there in NO way this extremely small percentage, even if doubled, could impact the temperature as they are inclined to say it “does”.
7) There is NO scientific proof of AGW. There is, however, proof that the increase in CO2 occurs after the warming. This would make much more sense. As the majority of the CO2 on earth is maintained in the oceans, as they warm they realize more CO2. If the CO2 caused the warming it would trigger an unstoppable (regardless of what man did) release of CO2 from the oceans in a never ending cycle. As the earth has warmed and cooled repeatedly, we know that this cannot be true.
8) The earth was cooling up until the 70s, right during the midst of historical CO2 production that should not have happened. The earth has not warmed since 1998, right when China and India have come on-line with massive amounts of CO2, this too, should be impossible. AGW doesn't even pass the most basic "smell test".
9) Its called WEATHER. It gets warmer and cooler; the poles have even been known to switch with each other. There have been ice ages, warm periods, and it will continue to be that way. This is the most inane crap that man has ever contrived!
I agree that we all need to be better stewards of the environment, but this is not the way to do it. I was around in the 70s when the next ice age was coming, as I am a climber I couldn't wait...oh well.
Posted by: John | January 18, 2008 7:49 AM
But wait a minute in 1972 Time Magazine said we were entering into a mini-ice age, right?

People, look at what is going to happen. This Global Warming legislation will raise your already high utility rates, your going to start paying even more strange fees attached to taxes, licenses, and tags for your vehicles.
This Global Warming scheme is nothing more than a vehicle to indiscriminately raise revenue for the growing government. According to the talking heads it will take years, and years, and rears, with study after study after study to get a handle on this Global Warming.
There is no end game with Global Warming. I have to hand to the Democrats and Socialists, they created the perfect way to bleed capitalism, and free enterprise to death.
I just came from spending time in the Philippines, I asked some of the locals what they thought about Global Warming, the reply, "It's B.S." and he motored away.
Asia is growing my leaps and bounds and they are the slightest bit concerned with this Global Warming hoax.
People we have to wake up and stop these insane politicians from stealing even more of our hard earned money.
Something to remember. What is the difference between a crime lord who uses a weapon to steal your money and a politician who uses legislation to steal your money? The answer is, the politician gets elected.

The importance of Global Warming for the Revolution is too great to leave it in the hands of scientists. Do you really think we are that gullible? By calling it "climate change", you can claim that ANY type of whether proves your point. If you call it "global warming", then you only have a 50% chance of being correct. Have you never heard of the ice ages? The climate has "changed" since the beginning of time!
And to the person above who said that colder winters PROVES global warming...PLEASE! Does that mean the warm weather we had in early December proves global cooling??

Why are our standards so low? Why are we stopping at stopping climate change on Earth? This is a system wide problem. We are already seeing its impact on Mars with the polar ice melting there too.
If we don't limit our consumption, close our factories and power plants, and buy carbon credits, we will destroy our entire solar system.
Don't just stop global warming... STOP SOLAR WARMING NOW!!!

All of America's ills are caused by George Bush and/or Global warming.
All liberals have to have a looming disaster. It was Y2k and that fell through then it was the ozone hole and now global warming. They even blamed Cow Farts for global warming. Come on guys-get a life.

It's paradoxical that Republicans on the federal level urge reform be left to the states, yet the Republicans at the state level gripe that the decision should be made on a federal level. That's an awfully convenient way to accomplish nothing. It doesn't hurt to be in bed with a corporation like Constellation Energy, either.

How many times do you guys need to repeat your idea that global warming is a hoax before you think it will get people to stop believing in it? You're saying the same thing over and over, it's mind numbing.
If you don't believe that man has an affect on the climate, would you agree that we are nonetheless polluting it and destroying the habitats of many creatures?

Probably the most interesting component of the above article is the late added warning that the Drudge Report featured this article.
The implication seems to be that the "normal" readership of the Baltimore Sun has been tainted by Drudge Report readers who most likely are global warming skeptics. So feel free to ignore any letters that take this view.
As much as anything this statement reveals the weakness of the arguments in favor of global warming (or climate change to use the new terminology). How good is any "scientific" hypothesis that can't or won't stand up to closer scrutiny?

Nothing quite like being directly insulted by an author.

I disagree with the previous poster who said that the protesters probably hold jobs tied to the "global warming" industry. I would argue that they don't hold jobs at all, otherwise, they would be at those jobs instead of protesting. Most of them are just ignorant college students who are not yet mature enough to think for themselves. The one holding the sign "Stop Climate Change" cracks me up. Gimme a break. The climate is undergoing constant change - it was doing so long before we got here and will continue to do so long after we're gone. The last ice age, mass extinctions, changes in the Earth's magnetic field. Things change - it's a fact of life. Lord knows we could be hit by an asteroid tomorrow that ends all life as we know it. Of course, they'd probably find a way to blame that on greenhouse gass emmisions too.

This is pointless. Russian astronomers, making real scientifice observations, have concluded that the sun is at the high point of a warming cycle.
Anyway, with the Great Credit Crisis of 2008 and the following depression, this protest will seem so 2007 in just a year.

Everyone in MD will be living in tents come 2050. Except for the really smart law makers. It might be good for PA...people will move here to find food, increase our tax base.

More laws. That's what they want. More laws to "force all businesses to reduce their emissions". Laws in the United States shouldn't force anyone to do anything. Perhaps these activists should spend their resources trying to convince these businesses to make such changes voluntarily, if such changes are in fact a good idea. But this approach would require them to know about what they say they care about rather than blindly imploring lawmakers to control other people's actions.

These people should set an example for the rest of us, and prove that it is possible to cut their personal CO2 usage by 90%. That would involve giving up any engine driven transportation and turning off the heat in their houses. Reducing their food consumption by 90% and severely cutting back on their breathing.
And one more thing - give their job to someone in China.

Seriously... You have to be kidding that there are so many denialists in this country. Let's look at it this way, even if Global Warming was not occuring (which it is). What would be the downside to curbing pollutants; less asthma, sickness caused by polluting, cleaner air, better technology, more jobs for industries built around cleaning the environment. I could go on. Forcing companies to clean up there act is a good thing for everyone.
If the government (by the people) did not regulate the emissions of large corporations, all of you idiots that think Global Warming is a fraud, would probably be living in garbage dumps infested by the trash emitted by the companies you so faithfully try and protect.
There is a movement in this country as well as in others for a reason. People all over the world (intelligent ones) who have lived in their home towns for decades recognize that something is changing.
It's time you stopped denying it!

Global Warming – Man Made or Nature’s Cycle R8.
The debate: Is the observed global warming natural or man made?
Global Warming or natural climatic rhythm?
Global Warming Man made or natural cycle?
Compiled by Yehuda Draiman, Energy Analyst.
An extensive look at Global Warming – Cause and effect.
The dominant greenhouse gas is WATER, not carbon dioxide. It is responsible for up to 95% of the so-called "greenhouse effect". Carbon dioxide is only a minor player, and Man's activities put only about 3% as much CO2 into the atmosphere yearly as does Nature. How does the atmosphere distinguish between them? Its concentration is believed to have increased from 0.00028 of the atmosphere to 0.00038 over the past couple of hundred years.
There are numerous pros and cons as to the cause of Global Warming.
After some study and research I share with you the various opinions.
This consensus in this on-line article represents the views of some researchers and forecasters, but does not necessarily represent the views of all scientists. It was not the intention of this article to discount the presence of a human-induced global warming element or to attempt to claim that such an element is not present. There is a robust, on-going discussion on climate change within the scientific community.
It takes a certain kind of gumption to stand up to the status quo.
Folks who challenge the mainstream media and popular culture are subjected to some of the nastiest insults and character assassinations. And such retribution is nowhere more severe than for those who take issue with popular views about global warming.
There are a number of very bright climatologists and meteorologists out there who believe that this century’s warming trend is neither critical nor man made. Now you can agree or disagree with these folks. But you can’t pretend that these folks are crazies or ill informed or just in it for the money. They believe that the models used by the “We’re all going to die!” global warming worriers are far too severe and fail to take enough natural factors into consideration in their climate models. For their audacity to take on the status quo, they have been censured, excoriated and labeled as lackeys for the oil companies.
One degree. On a thermometer, it doesn't seem like much at all. But that degree has sparked intense debate among experts who monitor the temperature on Earth.
In a new report issued by a leading group of scientists and meteorologists, research shows the planet has warmed one degree during the last 100 years. That report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change asserts that Earth will continue to warm between 2 and 10 degrees during the next century.
Those researchers believe that global warming could be boosting the planet's temperature. Global warming is a phenomenon of temperatures rising on Earth. Scientists have said that some human activities cause gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide to build up in the atmosphere. Those gases trap heat closer to Earth's surface giving the planet a worldwide fever.
Many experts say two chemicals -- carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide -- are most responsible for global warming. Cars, trucks and factories around the world emit those chemicals everyday. Once in the atmosphere, those chemicals act as big reflectors, bouncing back sun rays to the Earth and warming the planet.
But there are scientists, climatologists and weather watchers who believe that the warming trend is not an aberrant threat, but part of a natural cycle of warming and cooling on Earth. "We just haven't been around long enough to know if it's a fact," said CNN weather anchor Orelon Sidney. "The Earth is more than 4 billion years old and humans haven't been around that long. So this could just be a part of cycle."
The scientists who believe the Earth is warming say years of research are needed to determine why.
Dr. Lonnie Thompson, a researcher at the Byrd Polar Research Center located at Ohio State University, is among those attempting to discover the causes of global warming. He spends many months away from his home in search of answers.
Thompson's latest trek to the Andes Mountains showed substantial changes in a glacier.
"The glacier we have been studying has been melting at an unbelievable rate," Thompson said. "Where there was once ice, there is now a lake." Thompson photographed the new lake and glacier to show "obvious changes in our world because of temperature increase," he said. Thompson said a warmer earth could lead to more erratic weather. "If energy in the system -- the heat on the Earth's climate system --increases, then you're going to have more water vapor. More water vapor feeds more storms -- larger hurricanes, maybe larger snowstorms too."
As a meteorology student at the University of Maryland, Antony Chen is among those who would watch for those weather changes. He is part of the next generation of researchers who will have to figure out what's behind the cause of the temperature bump.
Chen says we have to look at the big picture then determine what changes people should make on the local level. "We need to know what's going on in the atmosphere, the magnitude of changes we are making to our climate system," Chen said. "Then we can start coming up with solutions."
Professor Bruce Doddridge is one of Chen's professors and is encouraged by the caliber of young people he's seen entering the earth sciences. "I'm impressed with the variety of smart and intelligent people coming through that can do this work," he said.
Doddridge concedes that there are many potential causes of global warming, but said he believes the new technology could help assess and solve the problem. "The issues are becoming more complicated," Doddridge said, "but I think the tools we have to work with are becoming more sophisticated."

1. The authors of Unstoppable Global Warming - Every 1,500 Years, say that history, ice core studies and stalagmites all agree on a natural cycle at roughly that interval that is superimposed on the longer, stronger ice ages and interglacial phases.
They point as evidence of this natural cycle to the “Climate Optimum” - a period of warmer and wetter weather than the present Earth’s climate, which took place 9,000 years ago to 5,000 years ago, and a cooling event 2,600 years ago.
During the Roman warming period from 200 BC to around AD 600 North Africa and the Sahara were wetter and supported crops. In more recent times they point to the medieval warming of 900 to 1300, when Eric the Red’s descendant’s colonized Greenland and the Little Ice Age of 1300 to 1850 which saw the Norse dairy farmers on Greenland grow short from malnutrition and eventually die out.
Mr. Avery, a former US agriculture official whose celebrated earlier book was Saving the Planet with Pesticides and Plastic: The Environmental Triumph of High Yield Farming suggests that the natural cycle of warming and cooling may come from variations in cosmic rays which have been linked to cloud formation.
This theory was validated in a recent paper in a Royal Society journal by scientists from the Danish National Space Centre who showed that sub-atomic particles - cosmic rays from exploding stars - play a major role in making clouds. During the past century cosmic rays became scarcer as vigorous activity by the sun forced them away. So there was less cloud cover to reflect away sunlight and a warmer world, according to the Danish scientists.
2. Policymakers have been arguing for nearly a decade over what to do about global warming. Noticeably missing from this debate has been any mention of the fact that natural fluctuations in the Earth’s temperature, not Man, are the likely explanation for any recent warming.
Proponents of the global warming theory repeatedly cite a 1.5° F temperature increase over the last 150 years as evidence that man-made CO2 is dangerously heating up the planet and will cause huge flooding, severe storms, disease and a mass exodus of environmental refugees. Based on this, the Clinton Administration and its environmental allies want Congress to ratify a treaty that will hike consumer prices 40 percent and cost the American economy $3.3 trillion over 20 years. But the apocalyptic predictions on which they justify these drastic steps are totally unsubstantiated and ignore some fundamental truths about the Earth's climatic behavior.
The fact is, the planet's temperature is constantly rising and falling. To put the current warming trend in perspective, it's important to understand the Earth's geological behavior.
Over the last 700,000 years, the climate has operated on a relatively predictable schedule of 100,000-year glaciations cycles. Each glaciations cycle is typically characterized by 90,000 years of cooling, an ice age, followed by an abrupt warming period, called an interglacial, which lasts 10,000-12,000 years. The last ice age reached its coolest point 18,000 to 20,000 years ago when the average temperature was 9-12.6° F cooler than present. Earth is currently in a warm interglacial called the Holocene that began 10,700 years ago.
Although precise temperature readings over the entire period of geologic history are not available, enough is known to establish climatic trends. During the Holocene, there have been about seven major warming and cooling trends, some lasting as long as 3000 years, others as short as 650. Most interesting of all, however, is that the temperature variation in many of these periods averaged as much as 1.8° F, .3° F more than the temperature increase of the last 150 years. Furthermore, of the six major temperature variations occurring prior to the current era, three produced temperatures warmer than the present average temperature of 59° F while three produced cooler temperatures.
For example, when the Holocene began as the Earth was coming out of the last Ice Age around 8700 B.C., the average global temperature was about 6° F cooler than it is today. By 7500 B.C., the climate had warmed to 60° F, 1° F warmer than the current average temperature. However, the temperature fell again by nearly 2° F over the next 1,000 years, settling at an average of 1° F cooler than the current climate.
Between 6500 and 3500 B.C., the temperature increased from 58° F to 62° F. This is the warmest the Earth has been during the Holocene, which is why scientists refer to the period as the Holocene Maximum. Since the temperature of the Holocene Maximum is close to what global warming models project for the Earth by 2100, how Mankind faired during the era is instructive. The most striking fact is that it was during this period that the Agricultural Revolution began in the Middle East, laying the foundation for civilization. Yet, Greenhouse theory proponents claim the planet will experience severe environmental distress if the climate is that warm again.
Since the Holocene Maximum, the planet has continued to experience temperature fluctuations. In 900 A.D. the planet's temperature roughly approximated today's temperature. Then, between 900 and 1100 the climate dramatically warmed. Known as the Medieval Warm Period, the temperature rose by more than 1° F to an average of 60° or 61° F, as much as 2° F warmer than today. Again, the temperature during this period is similar to Greenhouse predictions for 2100, a prospect global warming theory proponents insist should be viewed with alarm. But judging by how Europe prospered during this era, there is little to be alarmed about. The warming that occurred between 1000 and 1350 caused the ice in the North Atlantic to retreat and permitted Norsemen to colonize Iceland and Greenland. Back then, Greenland was actually green. Europe emerged from the Dark Ages in a period that was characterized by bountiful harvests and great economic prosperity. So mild was the climate that wine grapes were grown in England and Nova Scotia.
The major climate change that followed the Medieval Warm Period is especially critical as it bears directly on how to assess our current warming period. Between 1200 and 1450, the temperature plunged to 58° F. After briefly warming, the climate continued to dramatically get colder after 1500. By 1650, the temperature hit a low of 57° F. This is regarded as the coldest point in the 10,000-year Holocene geological epoch. That is why the era between 1650 and 1850 is known as the Little Ice Age. It was during this time that mountain glaciers advanced in Switzerland and Scandinavia, forcing the abandonment of farms and villages. Rivers in London, St. Petersburg and Moscow froze over so thoroughly that people held winter fairs on the ice. There were serious crop failures, famines and disease due to the cooler climate. In America, New England had no summer in 1816. It wasn't until 1860 that the temperature sufficiently warmed to cause the glaciers to retreat.
The significance of the Little Ice Age cannot be overestimated. The 1.5° F temperature increase over the last 150 years, so often cited as evidence of man-made warming, most likely represents a return to normal temperatures following a 400-year period of unusually cold weather. Even the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the chief proponent of the Kyoto Protocol global warming treaty signed in December 1997, concludes that: "The Little Ice Age came to an end only in the nineteenth century. Thus, some of the global warming since 1850 could be a recovery from the Little Ice Age rather than a direct result of human activities."
Leading climate scientist Dr. Hugh Ellsaesser of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory says we may be in for an additional 1.8° F of warming over the next few centuries, regardless of Man's activities. The result would be warmer nighttime and winter temperatures, fewer frosts and longer growing seasons. Since CO2 stimulates plant growth and lessens the need for water, we could also expect more bountiful harvests over the next couple of centuries. This is certainly not bad news to the developing nations of the world struggling to feed their populations.
Thus, far from being a self-induced disaster, global warming is the result of natural changes in the Earth's climate that promises to yield humanity positive benefits. In the geological scheme of things, the warming is not even that dramatic compared to the more pronounced warming trends that occurred during the Agricultural Revolution and the early Middle Ages. Moreover, there is strong evidence that this long-needed warming is moderating. All things considered, global warming should be viewed for what it is: A gift from the often fickle force of Nature. Enjoy it while you can.
3. Global warming is a natural geological process that could begin to reverse itself within 10 to 20 years, predicts an Ohio State University researcher.
The researcher suggests that atmospheric carbon dioxide -- often thought of as a key "greenhouse gas" -- is not the cause of global warming. The opposite is most likely to be true, according to Robert Essenhigh, E.G. Bailey Professor of Energy Conservation in Ohio State's Department of Mechanical Engineering. It is the rising global temperatures that are naturally increasing the levels of carbon dioxide, not the other way around, he says.
Essenhigh explains his position in a "viewpoint" article in the current issue of the journal Chemical Innovation, published by the American Chemical Society.
Many people blame global warming on carbon dioxide sent into the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels in man-made devices such as automobiles and power plants. Essenhigh believes these people fail to account for the much greater amount of carbon dioxide that enters -- and leaves -- the atmosphere as part of the natural cycle of water exchange from, and back into, the sea and vegetation.
"Many scientists who have tried to mathematically determine the relationship between carbon dioxide and global temperature would appear to have vastly underestimated the significance of water in the atmosphere as a radiation-absorbing gas," Essenhigh argues. "If you ignore the water, you're going to get the wrong answer."
How could so many scientists miss out on this critical bit of information, as Essenhigh believes? He said a National Academy of Sciences report on carbon dioxide levels that was published in 1977 omitted information about water as a gas and identified it only as vapor, which means condensed water or cloud, which is at a much lower concentration in the atmosphere; and most subsequent investigations into this area evidently have built upon the pattern of that report.
For his hypothesis, Essenhigh examined data from various other sources, including measurements of ocean evaporation rates, man-made sources of carbon dioxide, and global temperature data for the last one million years.
He cites a 1995 report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a panel formed by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme in 1988 to assess the risk of human-induced climate change. In the report, the IPCC wrote that some 90 billion tons of carbon as carbon dioxide annually circulate between the earth's ocean and the atmosphere, and another 60 billion tons exchange between the vegetation and the atmosphere.
Compared to man-made sources' emission of about 5 to 6 billion tons per year, the natural sources would then account for more than 95 percent of all atmospheric carbon dioxide, Essenhigh said.
"At 6 billion tons, humans are then responsible for a comparatively small amount - less than 5 percent - of atmospheric carbon dioxide," he said. "And if nature is the source of the rest of the carbon dioxide, then it is difficult to see that man-made carbon dioxide can be driving the rising temperatures. In fact, I don't believe it does."
4. Is human activity warming the Earth or do recent signs of climate change signal natural variations? In this feature article, scientists discuss the vexing ambiguities of our planet's complex and unwieldy climate
Newspaper headlines trumpet record-breaking temperatures, dwindling sea ice, and retreating glaciers around the world. Concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide, one of the greenhouse gases responsible for scalding temperatures on Venus and at least 33 degrees C of normal warming here on Earth, are on the rise. Our planet seems destined for a hot future!
But is it really? Or are we simply experiencing a natural variation in Earth's climate cycles that will return to "normal" in time?
Correlations between rising CO2 levels and global surface temperatures suggest that our planet is on a one-way warming trend triggered by human activity. Indeed, studies by paleoclimatologists reveal that natural variability caused by changes in the Sun and volcanic eruptions can largely explain deviations in global temperature from 1000 AD until 1850 AD, near the beginning of the Industrial Era. After that, the best models require a human-induced greenhouse effect.
In spite of what may seem persuasive evidence, many scientists are nonetheless skeptical. They argue that natural variations in climate are considerable and not well understood. The Earth has gone through warming periods before without human influence, they note. And not all of the evidence supports global warming. Air temperatures in the lower atmosphere have not increased appreciably, according to satellite data, and the sea ice around Antarctica has actually been growing for the last 20 years.
It may surprise many people that science -- the de facto source of dependable knowledge about the natural world -- cannot deliver an unqualified, unanimous answer about something as important as climate change.
Why is the question so thorny? The reason, say experts, is that Earth's climate is complex and chaotic. It's so unwieldy that researchers simply can't conduct experiments to check their ideas in the usual way of science. They often rely, instead, on computer models. But such models are only as good as their inputs and programming, and today's computer models are known to be imperfect.
Most scientists agree that no single piece of data will likely resolve the global warming debate. In the end, the best we can expect is a scientific consensus based on a preponderance of evidence.
5. 30 Natural Global Warming Episodes Have Occurred During the Past 5,000 Years.
David Dilley of GWO has discovered a powerful natural forcing mechanism that controls global warming cycle, hurricane track landfalls, El Nino cycles and many other climate weather cycles.
David Dilley of Global Weather Oscillations Inc., Ocala Florida, has completed groundbreaking research on Global Warming. This research found that the current global warming episode is a "Natural Recurring Cycle", and that this current cycle will begin to diminish as early as 2015, and no later than 2040.
Mr. Dilley’s 15-years of ongoing climate research has uncovered a very powerful external forcing mechanism that causes shifts in regional weather cycles, and the world’s climate. This forcing mechanism is called “the Primary Forcing Trigger Mechanism”, or PFM. The PFM is a cyclical forcing mechanism that can be forecast years in advance, or even traced back through the earth’s climate history. The major influence of the PFM on the earth’s climate is that it causes the world’s dominating regional high-pressure systems to shift position, or become displaced from their normal seasonal position.
Because the PFM is cyclical, the earth’s weather and climate is likewise cyclical. As an example of an induced PFM climate cycle, the subtropical high-pressure system in the central South Pacific normally causes the ocean’s water temperature to stay relatively cool in this region. Dilley’s El Niño research (see link) explains that the PFM cycle induces a shift in the position of the high-pressure system where El Niños form. The resulting wind shift then triggers the formation of an El Niño by inducing a rapid warming of sea surface temperatures. Dilley says that research going back to 1915 showed 24 such PFM cycles and 24 El Niño occurrences. This research is currently under peer review and will go to a leading climate journal this summer.
Further research by Dilley and Global Weather Oscillations, indicates that this same PFM forcing mechanism displaces high-pressure centers in such a way to control the tracks of hurricanes from one year to the next. (See hurricane link) Knowing how and why this forcing mechanism controls weather cycles opened the door to the ground breaking global warming research.
Mr. Dilley states that the current global warming cycle is without a doubt the result of a known external “natural” forcing cycle. According to Dilley, most government officials, climatologists and meteorologists are looking only at the increase in temperatures and carbon dioxide (CO2) levels over the past 50 to 100 years. These correlations and findings are only representative during global warming episodes. When you take into account nearly 30 other global warming episodes over the past 5 thousand years, it becomes very apparent that CO2 levels cannot be the forcing mechanism that has caused global warming, but rather Long-term PFM climate forcing cycles. These cycles likely displace high-pressure systems and the polar jet stream northward during an approximate 200-year recurring PFM forcing cycle.
the years 1050 to 1205 AD. The peak warming of this cycle lasted 90 years from 1090 to 1180 AD, as delineated by the red box. The second global warming cycle was from 1285 to 1415 AD, with a 65-year peak from 1315 to 1380. The third global warming episode was from 1440 to 1590 with a 50-year peak from 1520 to 1570. The fourth was from 1700 to 1845 with a 45-year peak from 1740 to 1785. Finally, the current global warming episode began about 1910 and the peak about 1950, or about 57 years ago.
The graph and research indicates that each global warming cycle has duration of 130 to 160 years, and the peak of each cycle has duration of 50 to 90 years. Analyses of the 5 warming cycles and the history of PFM cycles, indicates that the current cycle is about the same duration as the one that occurred about 900-years ago. Therefore, the current global warming cycle will run from 1910 to 2060, with the duration of the peak warming occurring between 1950 and 2015. The peak warming will level off around 2015 and then begin diminishing rapidly by no later than the year 2030 to 2040. Once cooling begins it will only take 20 to 30 years to cool to the lowest part of the cooling cycle, temperatures much like what was recorded in the 1800s.
In addition to the 5 global warming cycles found during the past 1000-years, it should be noted here that a total of approximately 30 global warming cycles have occurred during the past 5000 years, with the warmest cycle occurring approximately every 1000-years, and the peak of the warmest cycle having a duration of 60 to 90 years. Referring to the 5000-year graph, the present long-term warming cycle can be seen on the right hand side of the graph, and 4 other long-term warm cycles date back 5000-years on the left side of the graph.
Analyses of the 5000-year graph indicates that long-term warming cycles have durations as short as 500-years as seen in the 2 cycles labeled A, to as long as 1000-years as seen in cycle C nearly 4500-years ago. Further analyses of cycle durations indicates that if the current long-term warming cycle which began in the year 1500 AD was of the same duration as cycle A, the peak of the current warming would of ended back in the year 1750, and it did not. In addition, if the current cycle was the same duration as cycle B, the peak warming of our current global warming cycle would have ended in the year 1900, and it did not. Now let’s take a look at cycle C. in the next paragraph..
Further research by Research by Global Weather Oscillations indicates that the PFM climate forcing cycle normally occurs in cycles of 5. Therefore looking back 5 warming cycles and 5 PFM cycles, we find cycle C that occurred 4,500 years ago and had a 1000 - year duration of the entire warm cycle. Using the mid-point of this cycle (500-years), the current long-term warming that began around the year 1500 AD will peak around the year 2000 AD, and end by 2500 AD.
Reconstructed Carbon Dioxide CO2 and Temperature Proxies Past 400,000 Years.
The graph below shows reconstructed Ice Core temperatures and carbon dioxide concentrations over the Antartica from near present time back 400,000 years. Of particular importance is that this graph shows 5 Natural Cycles during the past 400,000 years and as temperatures rise the carbon dioxide concentrations also naturally rise, thus mirroring the cyclical temperatures. It is well known throughout the scientific community that warmer temperatures can hold more water vapor, and water vapor absorbs and holds carbon dioxide. Thus these 5 Natural Cycles during the past 400,000 years mirror the 200-year global warming cycles shown early. Therefore, it is likely that the peak of all 30 global warming cycles during the past 4,000 years likewise had carbon dioxide concentrations very similar to the values found today.
Thus, carbon dioxide levels are not the cause of global warming....all global warming cycles are "Natural".
Natural Global Warming Cycles …. Putting it all together
The current long-term 1000-year warming cycle began about the year 1500 AD and will continue to near 2500 AD. This current long-term cycle will consist of 5 cyclical short-term global warming and cooling episodes. The world is now in the third of the 5 short-term cycles, and the warmest of the 5. The first short-term global warming episode peaked between 1520 and 1570 AD, followed by a cooling period until the next global warming episode peaked between 1740 and 1785. Temperatures remained cool throughout the 1800s to early 1900s, and then the third short-term global warming episode began. The peak of this current global warming episode began in earnest around 1950 and will level off as early as 2015, and no later than 2030-40. Then within 20 years temperatures will cool rapidly to the same levels as seen in the 1800s. The global warming cycles are approximate 200-year cycles, so the next global warming cycle will peak about 150-years after the end of the current cycle, or about the year 2200. This will be the 4th of 5 cycles within the current 1000-year primary warm cycle, and it will not be as warm as the current episode.
Global warming research has found 5 natural global warming cycles during the past 1000-years, and approximately 30 global warming cycles during the past 5 thousand years.
Actions - While we argue a lot about details on how bad global warming is and how responsible mankind is for it, we did agree that individuals acting on their own to conserve energy or clean the environment is always preferred to a government mandated, centralized policy of coercion. In that respect, I was able to support his project of working with Corporate America and other companies to give consumers incentives to buy energy-saving light bulbs—a private sector initiative that he claims will save a lot of energy and produce less CO2.
Cleaner burning energy that takes some of the profit out of the pockets of our “friends” the Saudis wouldn’t be such a bad thing. It may not be much, but it’s a start and a way to bring two divergent sides of the global warming debate together.
Perhaps a non-coercive method of voluntary action on CO2 emissions will work. The one thing we’re learning from the example of Europe’s Kyoto experiment is that government coercion doesn’t work. Freedom of choice is not only right, it’s practical!
In conclusion - let the reader make up his own conclusions.

Global Warming scientist skeptics list is growing...
6/23/2007
Many former believers in catastrophic man-made global warming have recently reversed themselves and are now climate skeptics. The names below are just a sampling of the prominent scientists who have spoken out recently to oppose the perceived alarmism of man-made global warming.

400 ... but it made the news .... mmm .... maybe cuz it's snowing... still ... doesn't make sense. We need to start thinking more about the news that gets fed to us, that makes it to the front of what we see and hear. We need to look for the news that gets held back, the news thats not as obvious. Just a thought.

It is extremely incredible how many times we see that global-warming symposiums, seminars, and news conferences are blanketed in snow accompanied by cold temperatures. I really believe that GOD is displaying HIS sense of humor here.

This is no hoax, guys. Take an honest look at the science. The global scientific community has reached an unprecedented consensus on climate change. The only real unknowns are how bad and how soon.
Besides, we're not arguing for the perfect climate. We just think it would be a good thing if our climate could continue to support human civilization. We are, after all, very likely to see food and drinkable water crises like nothing we have ever experienced if we don't reduce greenhouse gas emissions and we don't start soon.
This would NOT mean economic disaster for Maryland. Instead, this could be an opportunity for significant innovation, new industries and new jobs. Changing the way we do business does NOT mean the end of business. It means change and growth.
One way or another, we're going to change. We still have an opportunity to exert some control over that change. Let's take it!
Posted by: Sandra H-S | January 18, 2008 9:20 AM
Does this mean I can stop panicking now? The IPCC will be a quarter of a century old soon. The world's longest emergency is called off.
But if we warmed the planet with this evil CO2 that plants need, we would require less fossil fuels to heat our warm homes in the winter.
Posted by: mememine69 | January 18, 2008 9:22 AM
Now it's not "global warming" but "climate change"? RIght... Because I remember in that brilliant piece of cinema from the Nobel prize winner where he had that cool graph that supposedly showed how the climate randomly changed with CO2 increases. It didn't supposedly show that the climate got warmer with CO2 increases.
Every time the manmade-global warming believers have to admit that the climate isn't doing what they thought it was going to do because of all us evil humans destroying it, they just modify their beliefs to include what's actually happening. So the winters have been cold the past couple of years and now it's "Ignore what we said about warming - what we meant to say was change".
To quote the usually-brilliant John Stossel, please, please give me a break!!

Larry helpfully points out, "for all the people coming from the Drudge Report... you do realize it is 'climate change' and not 'global warming', right? So the irony of a snowfall during a 'global warming' protest is a bit lost."
The climate is always changing. Always has been.
Is the present change anything out of the ordinary? (Try to think in terms of geological time spans, rather than the past umpteen years. Makes more sense in those terms, seems to me.)

As I read these comments, I am shocked by the glib nature of them.
It doesn't take a scientist to understand the implications of releasing so-called "greenhouse" gasses into our atmostphere. The earth that we live in is an eco-system. If you remember middle school earth science classes (assuming you had them), you'd remember that an eco-system has a careful balance. If there is not enough algae in the pond, the fish die. If there is too much algae in the pond, the fish become sickly and die.
Yes, humans breathe out carbon dioxide. That's not the problem. The problem is that as a society, we output much more carbon dioxide than can be recycled into the environment. And how is Co2 recycled? By trees. In order to recycle the amount of Co2 that humans are releasing into the atmosphere, we would need a forest roughly the size of Australia. there simply isn't enough room.
"Global Warming" is a horrible name for the problem. I personally use "Catastrophic Global Climate Change". Because in the end, that is the major problem. A small change in the climate of the earth has huge implications. If you were following the news a few years ago, the sea temperature off the coast of Scotland rose by 2 degrees. This caused the plankton in the sea to die out. As a result, the fish who fed on the plankton died. As a result, the birds who fed on the fish died. It really doesn't matter in the short run whether the earth gets hotter or cooler. What matters is that the earth, like any system, will react to a change in it's climate. And in the case of "Global Warming", it means that the earth's natural cycle of an ice age every 12,500-25,000 years will speed up. It's very concievable that the next time the earth has an ice age, we will be unprepared as a race for it. Is it ironic that they hold a "global warming" protest in Maryland and it snows that day? Maybe.
So who's crazier? The people who are trying to limit their consumption, or the people who believe that they have no effect on the natural balance?

I don't know what is more ignorant and arrogant, thinking we are the complete cause of global warming or that we can stop it.

I'm a Drudge reader with two simple questions.
What caused all the weather fluctuations in the past (let's say pre 1000 AD and the millions of years prior)?
What has changed on our planet and within our solar system so that we should expect a stagnet and unchanging climate?

The inconvenient truth that Earth IS in the balance is obviously too nuanced for the neocon brain to comprehend.
The science is settled, the debate is over and you wingnuts LOST. You would know this if you ever read anything other than the Drudge Distort.
Global warming caused by humans generating huge amounts of carbon dioxide is a FACT.
The problem is even worse than you can imagine. Human-caused global warming is now spreading to other planets and is causing the polar caps on Mars to disappear.

"global warming pollution"? You mean CO2? That's not a pollutant. Nothing on this Earth would live without CO2.

You know if the weather man can't tell whats going to happen tomorrow, people can't tell or control what will happen to the climate in the long run. We have a lot more important issues to worry about than the non issue of global warming. Its not America, it's China, India and Brazil that need to work on emissions, that's just a responsible thing that needs to be done.

90% of the posters mistakenly think that a snowstorm 'disproves' the fact that humans can and do influence the climate of the globe. However, climate change is about aggregate differences... the comments themselves reflect very vocal and FRINGE minority of the world's population.
In contrast, this is the truth:
1) in the past there have been major upheavals in climate without mankind
2) nevertheless, humans have an influence on the environment
3) this influence on the environment gradually warms the atmosphere and intensifies severe storms and changes local weather patterns, including the severity of snowstorms, while at the same time producing an overall AGGREGATE temperature increase
4) the resulting increase in global heat will change how our children and grand-children live, though it will NOT cause mass flooding or catastrophe like Gore proclaims. It will however, cause more extreme droughts and MAY cause problems for our species' survival 100 years down the road. This is particularly true when we have to deal with 1 billion chinese and indians buying cars.
In short, BOTH sides have it way off. The environmental extremists don't look close enough at the data and instead make wild and fantastic extrapolations, and the neo-libs and Drudge-ites ignore the data that do exist and that show something real is going on, even if it appears to be a small blip in the cosmic scheme of things, these 'blips' nevertheless radically alter our way of life. In addition, you have to be an idiot not to think that people can't influence and change nature in unexpected ways.
In short, ALL of you are morons, idiots protesting in the snow and the idiots criticizing them. Global warming does exist, and we need to do something about, but that doesn't mean we're all going to die "the day after tomorrow."

Two observations:
1. The Maryland legislature is a pack of incompetents because they don’t focus on “real” issues. I am sure they will find the time to waste on this bogus issue.
2. The protesters are incompetents also. Not only have they fallen for a hoax, but they can’t schedule properly. If they had their act together, they would do the global warming protesting in the summer and the “big box” store protesting in the winter. This schedule would still leave Thanksgiving open to protest “factory farming”.

Global warming is a lie created by politicians and backed by politically correct scientists, and it's great evil is when people begin to believe, even to some small extent, that "Global warming is the most important issue of our generation." What evil! That men and women would postulate that climate change is the most important issue of our day!
What about MORALITY?
What about the disintegration of the family?
What about the gradual extinction of the white race?
What about the threat of radical Islam?
What about the neglect Washington has today for the Constitution and it's principles of individual rights, free trade, and personal responsibility?
Even if global warming was REAL, I would rather die from global warming a free man, in a free society, than live my life in a society crippled with climate fear and taxed and regulated to the bones by Al Gore and those who swallow his disgusting lies.

“The inconvenient truth that Earth IS in the balance is obviously too nuanced for the neocon brain to comprehend.” - Insults are never a balanced or articulate way to start a debate.
“The science is settled, the debate is over and you wingnuts LOST.” - No legitimate scientist would ever make this assertion. Science is always open to test new ideas. In science, the debate is never over.
“You would know this if you ever read anything other than the Drudge Distort.” - Another insult, instead of an argument.
“Global warming caused by humans generating huge amounts of carbon dioxide is a FACT.” - There are a surprising number of scientists who would disagree with this statement.
“The problem is even worse than you can imagine. Human-caused global warming is now spreading to other planets and is causing the polar caps on Mars to disappear.” - I wonder if you truly believe this. My favorite sign: "Stop Climate Change"
First, No "Stop Global Warming" signs? I imagine that it was not politically advantageous to display such a sign in such "unfavorable" weather to the cause.
Second, What is the goal of "climate change" advocates? Are they for a climate "neutral" Earth? Wake up people: the Earth goes through natural cycles of warming and cooling. As a result, it is warmer during the spring and summer seasons and cooler during the fall and winters seasons. What is so outrageous about that? If you want to live in a climate "netural" area come to San Diego. On second thought, don't; I can't stand all the nuts that we have in California already, stay home and keep up the warming trend.

"The people who buy the man-caused global warming hype are they same type who would have drank the Kool-Aid at Jonestown."
The "Kool-aid" reference is overused, demeaning and too simplistic. Those poor souls in Guyana had armed guards surrounding them in a trapped enclosure. In contrast, these 'climate-kooks' have enclosed themselves within their own ignorance, narcissism and myopia.

Global Warming is coming...
"But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat." -- 2 Peter 3:10-12

All right thinking people want the same basic thing: FREEDOM.
But, the 'sky-is-falling' crowd of ecoterrorists have an entirely different agenda: They hate freedom.
Clearly, AlGore and his ilk want you and I to live in absolute poverty and they truly believe that America should become a third-world country.
What arrogrance - what absolute arrogance - to think that with the very limited data that 'scientists' possess, we humans can accurately predict what is occuring on a global scale. Sorry, guys, we just don't know enough.
As for the schmucks protecting in the dead of winter, you can bet they rushed home in their heated gas guzzling cars to their heated home! Hypocrites.
Listen: Here's the deal - if you want to live in a cave - go right ahead. I prefer to live in prosperity and blessing!

Oh Jeff... Considering Jimmy-boy Carter (probably one of the worst Presidents in history) and Arafat also received Nobel prizes I don't think the Nobel prize means so much. Your further comments prove that you, sir, are the idiot. It's not right wing vs. left wing. It's common sense vs. quasi religion.
Posted by: mark | January 18, 2008 10:17 AM
Jeff,
“So you brain-childs believe the Nobel prize was a mistake and Al Gore is a fraud?
Oh, of course humans couldn't possibly impact our environment; Or is it that it just doesn't matter because God gave the Earth to us humans and God will save all the believers in a Rapture - is that what U people believe?
Evolution is fake too? Science is all bunk and George Bush should be coronated for life then Jenna can take over... Get your heads outta of the sand. Who are idiots? “
What a mature tactic. Belittle your opponents for their perceived beliefs. Therefore you cannot be called upon to defend your assertions. How maniacally simple: I say that you that you say 1 + 1 = 3 (you never actually said it but it matters not, I said you did) – therefore it’s obvious to all that you’re an idiot because I said you said something stupid and then said it was stupid. The beauty is that it allows everyone to cease cranial activity and engage in name-calling. I couldn’t measure your scientific acumen but you political prowess is unmatched.

MARYLAND: Soon to be out of business.
Not that they don't deserve it: Increase taxes across the board and don't cut spending. Be a sanctuary state for illegal immigrants, give them driver's licenses (letting them kill Marines by drunk driving on Thanksgiving), give them free health care and then wonder why you wake up and feel like you are living in Tijuana . And now, further cripple business with the hoax that is man made global warming.
People are tired of it but they all keep voting in the jokes that are liberal Democrats. These same people will move to VA to escape the high taxes and forgotten liberties and then vote for the same liberals they did in Maryland, messing it up too. Then they wonder why? Wake up morons.

Global weather change is real. If not caused by humans or by natural reasons..respond accordingly. For all of you Bible thumpers out there remember Mr Noah and his ark? All of your cute little remarks dont change the fact that climate is a fluid not a solid. "Humans dont change things" LOL just ask the fishermen off the east coast of New England about the effect of humans on nature.
We need answers not 4 sentences of sitcom humor and sarcasm.

Global warming is going to be the end of mankind and must be stopped immediately. All private property that emits greenhouse gases should be seized by the state and destroyed. Desperate times call for desperate measures. We cannot continue to drive cars around and rape the planet and then act blissfully ignorant of the climate change that is going on around us. These protestors, although mocked, are on the right side of our generations great moral question. And many of these posts are shameful.

"Help stop Climate Change" says the banner...Yeah, that's great, let's stop Continental Drift while we are at it, and let's set limits on the activity of the Sun.
Perhaps we should set a curfew for the Sun after which it has to go down every day.
We could also ban volcanic activity since it disrupts the atmosphere and the climate far more than any SUV ever could.
And lets set speed limits for the wind too, that way there won't be any more hurricanes or tornadoes.
Yeah, that should do it....

So many comments here say global warming is a hoax. Where's the evidence you say exists? I'll give you some evidence : There is a giant whole in the upper layers of our atmospheres as a result of chlorofloral carbons emitted by cars and power facitilites to name a few. This hole will continue to grow and in the future it WILL negatively effect our climate and the way we live. But wait, why care? That won't happen for generations. At least that's what Premier Bush says and I believe everything he (I mean Karl Rove) says.

In a startling new revelation, researchers today announced that our real problem is not man-made Global Warming but the slowing of the Earth's spin, which is causing longer days and consequently more time for the daily heating and cooling cycles to disrupt the weather! Scientists are divided as to the cause but think it is either the increasing weight of humans on the planet (in which case we need to toss a few billion off) or the effect of all those GW activists' protest signs, thrust up into the air and acting like parachute brakes on the ground below. So... Please, enlightened politicians... Save the world! Stop night and day!

Suggested reading is Crichton's "State of Fear". Global (Warming, Cooling, Climate Change) is just a means to an end. Even if the worse case scenario played out that the global alarmist claim will happen, it would take hundreds of years before it impacted humanity. Hollywood has brain washed the masses into thinking they will die tomorrow from tidal waves and glaciers that ice over the planet in a week. Crichton's books usually always become movies, but "State of Fear" will never be made as it directly exposes the underbelly of the global alarmist movement.

Scientific consensus can be purchased using research grants which are administered by liberal academics with an agenda.

You clowns do realize that you are using a sample size that, for example, is equivalent to one day of your life. The first thing anyone learns in science is that you need an appropriate sample size. For example, it's like basing an action on what the weather was like in the last 24 hours "today". Thirty years ago, or "yesterday", it was global cooling. Scientists have irresponsibly ignored the most important rule, in order to promote a theory that doesn't have anywhere near the amount of data to proven scientifically.
Although it means nothing, I can't help but laugh at these demonstrations and conferences, that never fail to be held during a blizzard. It's as if a dark, cold, cloud is following them everywhere they go.

The proposed limits on greenhouse gases would harm the environment, hinder the advance of science and technology, and damage the health and welfare of mankind.
There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gasses is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth's atmosphere and disruption of the Earth's climate. Moreover, there is substantial scientific evidence that increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide produce many beneficial effects upon the natural plant and animal environments of the Earth."

This is what is wrong with MD and the USA...too many liberal idiots rewritting the law and overstepping the foundation rules set forth in both state and US Constitutions.

Here's something interesting from Wikipedia (which isn't always accurate, but usually their stats are fairly reliable) on the topic of CO2.
Even when vented, carbon dioxide must be introduced into greenhouses to maintain plant growth, as the concentration of carbon dioxide can fall during daylight hours to as low as 200 ppm (a limit of C3 carbon fixation photosynthesis[ citation needed]). A similar event on a global scale occurred after the Permian period, when Earth life almost became extinct. A repeat of such conditions (a decrease of carbon dioxide concentration to about 60-65% of its current level) would kill 99% of existing plants and undoubtedly eliminate human civilization (carbon dioxide deficit was also the most likely reason for most big life "extinctions" on the planet and will also finally end the Earth life)[citation needed]. Plants can potentially grow up to 50 percent faster in concentrations of 1,000 ppm CO2 when compared with ambient conditions.
So could it then be said that the Zealots of the Church of Global Warming are actually striving to kill life on Earth by reducing CO2?? And the soccer mom driving a giant Hummer is actaully helping to save the planet?
;-)
Well, I wouldn't go that far, but I point to this when I make my case that CO2 is not a "pollutant" per se, and the Eco Cops do a diservice to the whole subject when intermix CO2 with real pollutants in their rhetoric. Just be honest and level with the people instead of deceitful, and we are all better off with a more accurate discussion of pollution and the enviroment. :-)
Why is that so hard?
(And for those of you with a more liberal leaning, yes, I know there's those on the right to distort things too, trust me. I focus more on the Eco Cops and Church of Global Warming because the media pretty much take all they say and parrot it as gospel, while the distorters on the right are given no voice or credibility by the media, and thus languish on the fringes. So it's real clear which distorted message is getting out to the people and which is not, and hence I focus more on them. :-) )
For the record, the flip side of CO2:
5,000 ppm is considered safe for an 8 hr work day, and above 50,000 ppm is the dangerous limit for any breathing. The atmosphere averages 385 ppm.
So not trying to sugar coat anything, but again, it's not a pollutant. A pollutant is something harmful that is introduced into the atmosphere that isn't normally there. We need a certain level of CO2 in the air, just like we need a certain level of O2 and N2. Too little CO2 and all the plantlife on earth dies. Too much O2 and fires burn out of control. way too much O2 and the air itself can catch fire. To much N2 (which will displace the O2) and we all suffocate.
CO2 is as much a "pollutant" as N2 and O2 are...

Most of us prefer to refer to ourselves as "climate activists". Our goal is NOT to stop normal climate variations; that would be insane. Our goal is to stop the dramatically accelerated changes (caused primarily by CO2 but also other gases) that threaten sea rise that could drown coastal cities and could lead to extremes of drought and storms that would force, for example, millions of people to escape to safer areas of the planet, not to mention cause migrations in disease patterns that will bring formerly tropical diseases to mid-Atlantic states in the US.

Every ten years there is a new environmental problem.
In the 1970s, there was global cooling.
Then the acid rain issue came and went away after a multi-billion dollar government study showed that the trees in New England were dying because of acid soil and not acid rain. The net effect is no one talks about this problem any more after billions were spent because it was never a real problem.
The global warming issue has been around now for many years. Major universities are raising billions of funding dollar to study the problem but nothing has been proven one way or the other.
Today in Russia it was –65 degrees.
Time will tell who is right.

It's very frustrating when those who believe in global warming say that cold weather in fact proves the theory because it is some sort of anamoly caused by the unusually warm weather.
it really is symbolic of the whole global warming sham- making the evidence fit your beliefs rather than formulating your beliefs from the evidence.
years from now, all these people will look back and realize how foolish they were.

The "planet that has done pretty well for billions of years without our help" would more accurately be phrased "planet has done pretty well for the last million years in spite of us". The point being 1) humans have only been around for approx 1 million years and 2) until the last hundred years or so, there haven't been enough of us or enough of our industry to screw up the planet beyond its ability to recover. That's changing now and it's changing fast.

Stop Global Whining NOW !
Climate change is normal. There is no evidence that CO2 causes climate change. The "evidence" used by the UN and environmental whackos like Al Gore and others to support the idea of manmade global warming has been thoroughly discredited. The Hockey Stick is discredited.
Posted by: Mick Taylor | January 18, 2008 12:33 PM
The rise or fall of CO2 in the atmosphere FOLLOWS the rise and fall of temperature, always has always will. CO2 is only .04 of 1% in the atmosphere. Man made CO2 is a small fraction of that. Water vapor is the main green house gas, accounting for about 95% of all green house gas. No person who understands the basic facts believes CO2 causes global warming. Politicians use global warming to control how you live, and to extort more taxes.

We're just reading off different sheets of music. We ought to try to be humble enough and honest enough to evaluate what is going on without our egos getting in the way.
I, for one, am not just a climate activist; I'm a grandmother. As a grandmother, I would like nothing better than to find out that global warming is not threatening the world that my grandkids and their grandkids are going to inherit. Yet, I'm not willing to be deluded for any reason.
I want to know what is really happening, how and why. I'm willing to review the science and evaluate both sides of this "debate". And I hope some of the rest of you feel the same and do the same.

Politicians of both democrat and republican stripes are only showing their ignorance when they jump into world-wide weather, which they know absolutely nothing about! Not only did they get snow in Annapolis but a year ago some brilliant politicians planned a global warming conference which was poorly attended because of Wash DC snow. If I were planning such a meeting I think I would schedule it on Neal Diamond's hot, steamy August night--never, ever in mid-Winter. These guys show their low IQ by when they schedule these events. I teach Earth Science and have taught both at a University and Public High School, I assure you we can neither warm or cool this planet. But if the Maryland legislature wants to act environmentally friendly, I suggest they set up the state equivalent of the federal Super Fund to clean up the streams, rivers, and Chesapeake Bay which have been polluted by man. Yes man can screw-up the environment but not the weather. Maryland likes to say that much of the agricultural fertilizer pollution comes from Pennsylvania, but if they want to spend tax payers money let them propose to Pennsylvania legislators that the two states should build and fund a water treatment plant on the Susquehanna to filter out some of that fertilizer pollution. Or if they can find no cooperation from Pennsylvania clean up streams totally within Maryland that have been polluted by mines, farmers, and factories in Maryland. Stop beating their head and wasting your money on the Global warming fiasco and start fighting man-made pollution which will make Maryland better for its current residents and future residents. They can still appear Green and really accomplish something that will help people, animals, plants, and microbes. It's a win-win. Global warming efforts only hurt the troubled economy and therefore hurting the Maryland resident and will accomplish absolutely nothing--an obvious lose-lose situation.
Prediction: they will keep fiddling while the economy burns and pass more Global Warming rules that will be much ado about nothing accomplishing NOTHING--both in Maryland, and Washington DC (and other states too)!

First of all, I got done reading the article and found the "note" blaming Drudge Report for the comments people have left. I did not come from there. Real classy Baltimore Sun. They are the ones who wrote an article showing the irony of these crazy protesters. How could they not expect comments like the ones here.
I'm in the Northwest and we are currently having one of the coldest and snowiest winters in some years (yea for great, but COLD skiing!!!). I'd like these MD folks to come protest here. Climate change varies by season and location. It happens. Try living in Fargo, ND in winter (I did for 4 years) - they could USE the global warming.
Don't get me wrong, I am truly for taking care of our environment when I can. I don't go off trail when I am in the mountains, I recycle when I can and avoid excess waste. Drive a smaller car with lower gas emissions, higher gas mileage - the works.
What I am saying is that I think this whole "global warming" is quite the hooey. Last winter was warmer than usual and this one is much, much colder. It happens, it's called nature.

This past summer my family and I went on a cruise to Alaska. One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to Glacier Bay Alaska. The ship slowly putted around the various glaciers and it was absolutely beautiful.
One of the things they did was have a National Park Ranger come on-board and give a talk and tour of the Glacier Bay area. They started with a history of Glacier Bay and said its formation was due to the cyclical advance and retreat of the various glaciers. As a matter of fact the native people to Glacier Bay (the Tlingits) had a name for Glacier Bay, they called it “Valley of the Grasses” due to its abundant greenery and their ability to live off of the vegetation in the valley. Tlingit history also tells of being chased out of the valley by the advancing glaciers.
So here we have a park ranger telling us that the bay was formed by the cyclical advance and retreat of the glaciers over many thousands and thousands of years… well before the industrial revolution and well before “man” was homo sapiens. The ranger then went on to say that the glaciers were now retreating at an alarming rate but that this time it was due to man-made global warming! HA!
On another note, as a species we are far more able to survive a warming of the planet than another Ice Age… which will occur at sometime. There may come a time (ironically enough) when we as a species are purposely trying to heat the planet to stave off mile thick glaciers from covering much of our planet.
I am all for clean water and air but these are not the same issues as "man-made" global warming.

CO2 is NOT causing global warming. Ice core studies show that rises in CO2 FOLLOW rises in temperature, not the other way around. These protesters do not want to look at the science. Witness:
http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/283/5408/1712
High-resolution records from Antarctic ice cores show that carbon dioxide concentrations increased by 80 to 100 parts per million by volume 600 ± 400 years after the warming of the last three deglaciations.
http://www.realclimate.org/index.php?p=13
At least three careful ice core studies have shown that CO2 starts to rise about 800 years (600-1000 years) after Antarctic temperature during glacial terminations. These terminations are pronounced warming periods that mark the ends of the ice ages that happen every 100,000 years or so.
http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/1143791
Deep-sea temperatures warmed by 2°C between 19 and 17 thousand years before the present (ky B.P.), leading the rise in atmospheric CO2 and tropical–surface-ocean warming by 1000 years
http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/paleo/taylor/indermuehle00grl.pdf
The simulation yields a lag of (1200 +/-700) yr. This value is roughly in agreement with findings by Fischer et al. [1999] who reported a time lag of CO2 to the Vostok temperature of (600 +/- 400) yr during early deglacial changes in the last 3 transitions glacial-interglacial.

Global warming will destroy us all! We humans are killing off the planet, even though cows create more greenhouse gasses than we do!
Oh, wait... studies say the average temperatures on Mars and Venus have also increased within the past several years. There don't seem to be a humans on those planets, but, hey, maybe the people at NASA taped the Moon landing on Mars with black and white film or something....
By the way, to the flaming evolutionist "Jeff": I am a Christian, and I do not believe in the rapture, i believe in micro-evolution (but those topics are for argument in another place), but I also know that scientists have been trying to tell people that global warming is fraud for years now.

Keep in mind, everyone, that politicians aren't expected to be experts in every possible field; they consult with experts. That allows the experts to do the science and the politicians to use expert knowledge to forge policy. That's the way it's supposed to work anyway.

1. Weather is a highly complex, stochastic system. Why should we believe a forecast a century from now when the forecast five days from today will be wrong? Climate change is the only absolute about weather and man cannot alter it in any meaningful way.
2. Periodic periods of glaciation are caused by Milankovitch Cycles - convergence of orbital precession, orbital eccentricity and axial tilt. See Milankovitch cycles.
3. According to NASA, 168 billion metric tons (BMT) of CO2 are deposited in the atmosphere annually - 100 BMT from oceans, 30 BMT from decaying biomass, 30 BMT from respiration. Of the 8 BMT added by man, only 6 BMT are from fossil fuel. If we ceased using it today, we would only reduce atmospheric CO2 by 3.58%.
4. The greenhouse effect is not a climatic forcing function. See Dr Bjorm Lomborg.
5. The most effective greenhouse gas is water vapor, accounting for 80% of the greenhouse effect in the first 30 feet above the surface. Carbon dioxide accounts for only 0.08%. Water vapor is 1000 times as effective as CO2, yet Dr Michael Mann's computer model ignores it. See Dr Reid Bryson.
6. If all the floating polar ice melted today, it would not change sea level at all. Ice, as a solid form of water, displaces its mass in liquid water. Since the crystalline structure occupies more volume, it floats. When it melts, the mass does not change. (Glaciers and pack ice excepted.) See Archimedes
7. In the past 20,000 years as Earth emerged from an ice age, sea level has risen 150 Meters. Annual rise of sea level over the past 6,000 years has been 0.83 mm.
Let's not wreck the industrial world's economy on a solution to CO2 when it's not the problem.

While it might be anti-intuitive, global warming does not imply that every place on the planet will be warmer at all times. It does imply an overall warming and it does imply far greater fluctuations in climate than we are used to seeing.
Don't be fooled if it's colder than normal where you are. Check out what's happening around the globe, especially at the poles.
Posted by: Sandra H-S | January 18, 2008 1:07 PM
wow just imagine tropical weather all over the world, sound good to me.
Posted by: ChristopherLong | January 18, 2008 1:11 PM
Climate Change vs Global Warming
When temperatures dip below "normal" the greenhouse theorists need to change their argument to: climate change. Conveniently, "climate change" is supported whenever temperatures deviate from the norm. So now the greenhouse theorists argue that temperature deviations, both up and down, are caused by warming of the planet. Just like when you boil a pot of water you could probably find a cold spot somewhere, right? It's not evenly hot within the pot??? If you turn up the heat sometimes the stove gets colder. Right???
So now these activists are protesting against weather variability. WELCOME TO PLANET EARTH! Get used to it. Temperature and weather VARY over time on this planet. It's been happening since the dawn of history, way before the industrial revolution.
Sit back, relax. Be here now.

I lost count of how many total falsehoods were quoted of these protestors in Maryland, but let's begin here, with the photograph, specifically the sign that reads "Help Stop Climate Change". duh
Climate change happens! Forces much greater than we puny humans are the cause of any climate change, whether warming or cooling. Consider this fact; at 98% of all the mass in our solar system, our sun is by far the largest, most powerful object in our solar system and by far has the greatest influence on our climate. Our existence is absolutely nothing compared to the influence of the sun.
Consider another fact; Global 50 year average temperatures peaked in 1998! Global average temperatures were higher in 1930s than they are now, and Marylands shoreline is perfectly safe.
Good grief, there are Viking settlements in Greenland still frozen under glacial ice! Polar ice is not constant! While ice sheets shrink in one area, they grow in another area. Polar bear populations are on the increase in Siberia.
Reject the new religion, I implore you. Algore is a false prophet. Climate change happens naturally. It is inevitable. Adapt.
Just one question. Does the CO2 I create while making homebrewed beer count toward my carbon fricking footprint?
Green... It's the new Red!

Global warming = more winter snow (good for skiing and for western states who depend on snow for summer irrigation)
Global warming = longer growing season (means more food and greater variety, especially in local markets)
Global warming = less use of natural gas and heating oil in winter (freeing up more oilto make gasoline for our cars)
Global warming = fewer cold-related deaths in the Northern Hemisphere
Global warming = increased flooding on the coasts (reducing property values of celebrities)
Global warming = a boom for the air conditioner industry
So, even if it's true (which it probably isn't) the results are not all bad...

This is pure propaganda. This season Maryland has seen 7.2 inches of snow, which is 1.8 inches above Maryland's seasonal snow fall of 5.4 inches. To put this into language these simple dolts will understand "It has snowed more this year than normal". This is something neither the BS nor these pathetic propagandists will put forth. Poster Patrick Henry, who implies he’s one of the “intelligent ones,” suggests that even if Global Warming was a myth (which he say is not), the curbing of pollutants would reduce asthma and sickness. Okay, Earth to Patrick: Yes, the curbing of air pollutants, such as sulfur oxide, nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, as well as other various airborne particle matter can reduce “asthma and sickness” and should be paid appropriate attention. However – how can C02, the natural gas we expel after every breath, (and the gas Al Bore and his sheep attribute to global warming) cause “asthma and sickness?” I guess you have to be one of the “intelligent ones” to figure that one out.
Also, I love the blatantly transparent disclaimer posted by the author or editor of this story: “(Note: this story was featured on the Drudge Report soon after it went online this evening, and so many of the comments you'll see below are from readers who came to this blog from that web page)”.

That's funny, approx 310 demonstraters will get their own article & pictures in the Sun.
Thousands were down in Annapolis infront of the statehouse protesting the tax increases and the Sun didn't even recognize that they were there.

this is a joke....THE GRANDFATHER OF METEROLOGY SAID GLOBAL WARMING WAS A MYTH SPIT OUT BY A BUNCH OF MONEY HUNGRY SCIENTISTS TRYING TO GET FUNDING FROM GRANTS BY SCARING PEOPLE....its aweful the russians have said we are heading into another ice age and its true the period of climate warmth from the 17th centry until now has ended. Time to start bying some fur coats...hopefully they are clubbed baby seals.....flipping libs...the reason the temperature is fluxing has nothing to do with greenhouse emmisions(or what ever catch phrase was coined or the myth by some liberal think tank) its because of the salinity levels in the ocean....the amount of salt in the oceans determins the amount of heat it stores in the day, protecting use from the sun,,,and how much heat it can release at night giving us a warm happy feeling when the sun is bye bye....does it have to be dumbed down anymore for you crackpots....OH OH OH and if any lib holding a sign can point to one orbiting weather satalite that has shown a temperature average increase of greather then .00000006 degrees F over the last 30 years then please do....YOU WONT...CAUSE ITS NOT THERE...THE WEATHER STATIONS SHOWING ANY INCREASE IN WARMTH ARE IN OR NEAR LARGE CITIES YOU NOW WHERE REFLEXTION FROM GLASS BUILDINGS AND ASPHALT AND HUDDLED MASSES OF PEOPLE NATURALY INCREASE THE TEMPERATURE...WOW I REALLY HOPE GLOBAL WARMING IS CORRECT AND IT EATS UP ALL THE WHINNING LIBS!

I HOPE THEY PAID THE LINE ITEM ON THEIR PERMIT TO PROTEST THAT COVERED THE CARBON FOOTPRINT THAT ALL OF THEIR HOT AIR CAUSED.

Using Al Gore's logic, this is inarguable proof that crabcakes cause insanity.

One more thing to consider about targetting 25% reductions in CO2 emissions by coal-fired power plants...
There are only a few ways to accomplish this goal
1. only run the power plant 75% of its former run time which obviously will reduce emmissions by 25%.
2. install CO2 capture equipment on the flue gas stream. Existing state of the art capure technology will, AT A MINIMUM, reduce the electric output of a coal-fired power plant by 20%. Generating company business plans will make up for these losses by, surprise!,raising sale prices of electricity.
Leaving aside the many other technical issues of carbon capture technology either option 1 or 2 above will seriously impact electricity costs to the consumers, manufacturing and business sectors.
I'm glad to see that the majority of posts on this article are skeptical of CO2-GW theory but if we (skeptics) don't inform our genius elected representatives en masse we are going to get hammered when they pass legislation monetizing carbon dioxide molecules.
In the EU a metric ton of CO2 was worth, on average, $30 USD last year. A medium sized 500 MW coal-fired plant produces about 3,000,000 tons of CO2 per year. Do the math boys and girls- you know who is going to be stuck with the bill for this fiasco!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok- so maybe the SUN is warming earth like it has a hundred times in perpetual flux since the planet formed, but long before man came along. Now we have the real threat: morons trying to usurp freedom and power from us with a scare tactic- and it is working on the tiny brained panic first class of fools. But it is not working on free happy Americans, thank god.. nor a lot of oflks around the world. You morons- you want to panic about something? well, WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE, if we do not win against fanatical stone aged murder cultists of islam. THAT is a real, present, immediat threat you idiots. Vote American, not democrat!!!

Speaking of "dense population," when will these folks with the MMGW ["man-made global warming"] rings in their noses ever wake up?
They're dancing in the deepfreeze closet in the name of a wacko religious theory which is put forth by the likes of Gaseous Al Gore --- and amounts to nothing more than a fraud and a swindle. The enviro concerns over clean air and water are legit --- but these MMGW envirowackos are giving the legit concerns a bad name, or so it appears to me.

I love the part about "Just because we have cold weather doesn't mean that global warming doesn't exist"..What a bunch of followers..they can't accept the facts, the overwhealming proof that's emerged to refute the warming theories.. Those protesters should be wearing swimwear if the truly believe in this "global warming" nonsense. You could tell them "The moon's made of cheese," and if the person saying it was hip-looking and had the contemporary mantras at hand, the simpletons would go for it. I don't know of any bigger bunch of ignoramuses, except radical Islam extremists, perhaps..It's kind of a toss-up between the environmentalists and the radical Muslems...All this "green" proselytizing is really getting on my nerves.

WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE. That much is true, but that will happen despite the fact that the global warming hysteria is so much hot air. These people need to get a life.

You are all morons. Only an idiot would laugh in the face of a millions of scientists while they are being told by those same scientists that the world is crumbling around them. They've spent years studying these kinds of things. How long have you even known of such thing as global warming? Stop assuming you know everything. There is no politics in science. Biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics do not work in terms of democrat or republican.

It is amazing that no posts have been approved this week but one; where are my posts?
Anthropogenic Global Warming is not happening. It stopped getting warmer after 1998 which was the fifth hottest after 1934 after the temp data was corrected by a guy who had to reverse engineer Hansens data. Hansen slants his data to change the record by as much as ten degrees based on his opinion. And he refuses to reveal or even discuss why he changes the raw data by such large amounts. It is a farce.

This is clear proof of the existence of God and that he has a great sense of humor!
Global Warming alarmists make me sick.

You people are all so ignorant! The only time you people would actually start caring is when it's too late to change the damage that's already been done. Those protesters are fighting now to try and prevent any more damage before it's too late. You guys would only start caring when YOU start feeling the effects creeping up on you. So close-minded....

Hey Steve in Tulsa.
You're right Global Warming will make you sick.
Just think of all the millions of unknown microbes out there just waiting to thaw out and make you sick.
I just read all these messages and its typical of the ignorance these people have of the world around them.
You all are so worried it's going to cost trillions of dollars to combat a foe that doesn't exist. Wow, aren't we doing that now in Iraq? Where's the WMD? Where's the boogeyman other then the ones we created when we occupied the country? Millions of dollars a day, billions a month and that doesn't phase you people. Absolutely incredible.
We waste billions of dollars over there over a country that was not a threat to us physically, yet you go bonkers here spending funds to make us more energy efficient.
By spending 1 percent of our GDP now we can prevent spending 5 percent later when we will eventually be forced to face the music of our ignorance. At that point we will not only need the money to spend on repairing the damage we will also be forced to spend even more changing our habits. Talk about damage to the economy.
All you naysayers just use Iraq as a model. We're spending billions now on Iraq and the economy is still sound right? Then what's the problem spending billions now to run a more energy efficient and less oil dependent nation? I see more benefit in the ladder then the wasting money on the former.
I installed a high efficient AC and heating system. It cut my electric bill by a third even with rates going up and charging my electric car. In talking with my neighbors we have the cheapest electric bill on the block.
There is nothing wrong with spending money now to save us from spending more in the future when it will hit us twice as hard.
But I don't expect you all to be able to comprehend this.
So just go back to driving your gas guzzlers and paying $3.50 for gas and living your life of conspicuous consumption at the planet's expense. It will heal itself.

Man Made Global Warming --- the New Faith based Movement -- Facts not needed.
Let’s not forget that it was so cold this year that we had floods in WI, IA and MN in June from a late spring. Aspen CO re-opened up for Skiing on Father's day (June) cause they still had so much Snow with the late Spring Across the Country we are below the Average (120 years) for temperature
here is NOAA's Chart Jan-Oct
NOAA Temps Jan--Oct 2008
Global Warming and Cooling has been going on forever -- Man Made Global Warming is a Hoax and the Only solution these people have is More government intervention to their man made Hoax.
If there is a Real problem in any area of Society the Free market YOU AND I) will come up with a Solution -- Not Nancy Pelosi and John McCain -- People need to stop looking to the Government for a Bailout -- Our leaders are fools backed by big Business and they will only take our Liberties away with this non-sense
In Minneapolis it is now Illegal to idle your car for 3 minutes -- Washington State you can no longer have a beach bonfire due to carbon output ... and the list goes on and on
