Palin drawing new criticism for use of 'blood libel'
Sarah Palin is drawing condemnation from some Jewish leaders for her use of the phrase “blood libel” to describe criticism leveled against her following the Arizona shooting attack on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.
The former Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential nominee used the phrase Wednesday morning in her most expansive comments yet on the attack that left six dead and 14 more, including Giffords, wounded.
In the aftermath of the shootings, Palin’s opponents revived criticism of the violent imagery she used during the 2010 congressional campaign, when she urged supporters, “Don’t Retreat, Instead – RELOAD!” and posted a map of the United States with crosshairs over Democratic congressional districts, including Giffords’.
In a video released Wednesday, Palin deplored “the irresponsible statements from people attempting to apportion blame for this terrible event.”
"Journalists and pundits should not manufacture a blood libel that serves only to incite the very hatred and violence that they purport to condemn,” she said.
“Blood libel” most commonly refers to the claim, dating to Medieval Europe, that Jews used the blood of Christians in their rituals.
“Unless someone has been accusing Ms. Palin of killing Christian babies and making matzoh from their blood, her use of the term is totally out-of-line,” said Simon Greer, president of Jewish Funds for Justice.
“The term ‘blood libel’ is not a synonym for ‘false accusation,’ " Greer said. "It refers to a specific falsehood perpetuated by Christians about Jews for centuries, a falsehood that motivated a good deal of anti-Jewish violence and discrimination ...
“The fact that Rep. Giffords is Jewish and Ms. Palin is Christian makes the accusation even more grotesque.”
From Abraham Foxman, the national director of the Anti-Defamation League:
“It was inappropriate at the outset to blame Sarah Palin and others for causing this tragedy or for being an accessory to murder. Palin has every right to defend herself against these kinds of attacks, and we agree with her that the best tradition in America is one of finding common ground despite our differences.
“Still, we wish that Palin had not invoked the phrase ‘blood-libel’ in reference to the actions of journalists and pundits in placing blame for the shooting in Tucson on others. While the term ‘blood-libel’ has become part of the English parlance to refer to someone being falsely accused, we wish that Palin had used another phrase, instead of one so fraught with pain in Jewish history.”
And from David A. Harris, president and CEO of the Naitonal Jewish Democratic Council:
“Instead of dialing down the rhetoric at this difficult moment, Sarah Palin chose to accuse others trying to sort out the meaning of this tragedy of somehow engaging in a ‘blood libel’ against her and others. This is of course a particularly heinous term for American Jews, given that the repeated fiction of blood libels are directly responsible for the murder of so many Jews across centuries — and given that blood libels are so directly intertwined with deeply ingrained anti-Semitism around the globe, even today.
“Perhaps Sarah Palin honestly does not know what a blood libel is, or does not know of their horrific history; that is perhaps the most charitable explanation we can arrive at in explaining her rhetoric today.”

Comments
"To take up arms" means to take up arms. "to vote" mean to vote. Sarah Palin, who - as everybody know - is famous for her use of guns and riffles and shooting animals. She has a passion for it. When she said "Don't retreat, Reload" she did not say don't retreat, vote. Who among us, even for a second believes that she did not mean what she said. How can we understand her at all if we are suppose to replace the words she uses with some nicer version of those words. What did she mean by "Blood Libel" Why use those particular words. Sarah Palin is not dumb. She is a smart woman who knows what she is saying and she says what she means and means what she says. If I tells militants, like the Tea Party to take up arms, what does she expect them to do, wait two years and then vote. Take up arms does not in any way imply waiting around for two years to vote. Sarah knows what she is saying and it is her strategy to become president. It may work, it may not but it's Sarah's show and it will be an interesting two years to say the least.
Thanks.

Sarah Palin is a cancer on our political system. How do you tell people "Don't retreat; reload!" and put crosshairs on people and then act surprised when violence breaks out? Then, as a defense, she invokes a phrase with deep anti-Semitic overtones. She does not possess enough intelligence to be a town dogcatcher, much less the US President. This is why she gives "interviews" only to fellow morons like Glenn Beck and posts things on Twitter and Facebook where there can be no back and forth or questions. She just runs her mouth and every time something else moronic comes out. I wish someone would just tell her to shut up and go away.

I am Jewish and I don't mind the use of blood libel. It doesn't have the same meaning it did a generation ago. Just like our society is becoming less racist toward blacks with each generation, we must allow history to be in the past. Blood libel has several meanings; when not referring specifically to Jewish history, it isn't anti-Semitic.

Sarah Palin’s comments and polarizing rhetoric catering to her strength the extreme right had nothing to do with the tragic events in Arizona. Both the left and the right engage in far too much inflamed rhetoric. Democrats did it in 2006, apparently they had targeted districts that were Republican. We had President Obama saying if they bring a knife we are going to bring a gun. Sarah Palin not being the sharpest knife in the drawer likely had no clue what blood libel’s meaning in history was. If she did then that would simply make her even dumber than most already believe her to be.

In the fall of 2006,John Kerry appeared on Bill Maher's Real Time HBO show and commented about his wife's recent birthday.
MAHER: You could have went to New Hampshire and killed two birds with one stone.
KERRY: Or, I could have gone to 1600 Pennsylvania and killed the real bird with one stone.
In June 2009, Kerry was speaking about the brief disappearance of South Carolina womanizing Governor Mark Sanford.
The Bay State senator was telling a group of business and civic leaders in town at his invitation about the “bizarre’’ tale of how South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford had “disappeared for four days’’ and claimed to be hiking along the Appalachian Trail, but no one was really certain of his whereabouts.
“Too bad,’’ Kerry said, “if a governor had to go missing it couldn’t have been the governor of Alaska. You know, Sarah Palin.’’

Palin is outraged because the Republicans and those right of them are finally being seen for what they are, dangerous:
"Get on target for victory in November.” prompted an ad by Ms. Giifords’ Republican opponent Jesse Kelly, “Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office. Shoot a fully automatic M16 with Jesse Kelly,"
We all recall Rand Paul supporters stomping on a woman’s head last October.
Remember Pastor Steven Anderson of Phoenix Arizona praying for the President’s death in 2009.
Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn's chief of staff Michael Schwartz in 2004: “I’m a radical! I’m a real extremist. I don’t want to impeach judges. I want to impale them!”
Michael Scanlon, former chief of staff to Tom DeLay: “This whole thing about not kicking someone when they are down is b.s. Not only do you kick him—you kick him until he passes out—then beat him over the head with a baseball bat….”
"Don't retreat. Instead - reload!" Sarah Palin Tweet.
"...if this Congress keeps going the way it is, people are really looking toward those Second Amendment remedies. They're saying: My goodness, what can we do to turn this country around?" Sharron Angle.
Congressman Steve King (R-IA) last year “Let’s beat that other side to a pulp! Let’s take them out. Let’s chase them down. There’s going to be a reckoning!”
Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-MN) “I want people in Minnesota armed and dangerous.”

Why are Libtards so frightened of Palin?
After all she was governor of one of Obama's 57 states.
I don't think she spent 20 years in a racist, anti-American "church" either.
Jewish people do not have a monopoly on suffering.
By the way, when will Hollywood make a film about the 100 million killed by the communists in the 20th century?

My guess is that Palin was searching for an inflammatory term with emotional resonance and was clueless about its historical and anti-Semitic origin. As with so much else, it doesn't speak well of her.

The fact that Palin has once again removed her foot from her mouth just long enough to say something clueless should be of no surprise. Now in the highly unlikely event that she ever says anything requiring intellegent thought, that would be surprising.

Any more comments on the speculation or recriminations or words used that resulted from the shootings in Tucson should "Cease and Desist". Prez Obama's words last night were eloquent, purposefull and a wise commentary for all to hear and heed. And I did not and most likely will not in 2012 vote for him.

Cato -
I don't believe Jewish people have the monopoly on suffering in the least, but in this particular case Jewish folks are the only people that blood libel can refer to. Sadly, this is one monopoly no one would want, but unfortunately they own.
Unfortunately, she just misspoke and the person to blame for it is her and her staff. Any speech writer worth their salt would have caught this poor use of language. It just makes her look foolish.

Agreed David. She misspoke like when she made up the word "refudiate."
Cato says we are "frightened of Palin." Sarah thinks she can see Russia from her backyard. I'm not concerned with her intentions because her aim is limited by her vision, which is lacking.

The attacks on Governor Palin were and continue to be pathetic. America needs vibrant and spirited debate. She is spot on in her analysis of this recent debate.
The Gov. of Alaska has been the target of hatred by the left and the media and she has every right to defend her positions and she does a good job at it.
I only hope she can continue to reload and never retreat in the face of the lefts attacks. Haha, the last sentence must really send some of you in a tizzy! Gov. Pain's verbal responses in the defense of our great country are a breathe of fresh air. Keep it up Sarah, don't retreat!
The left and their media allies use much more coarse language usually personally attacking individuals like Gov. Palin.
Anyone that seeks to blame Gov Pain, or anybody for that matter, except the crazed killer himself for last weeks awful murders are not to be taken seriously.
Shame on the left and the Media and this Jewish Group for their selective outrage of Gov. Palin. Look into the mirror before you vent your so-called outrage - it rings on hollow ears.

Who says Palin is a Christian? Saying it doesn't make it so. Power, and not Jesus Christ, is lord of her life. Nothing that she does or says exemplifies Christ.
Posted by: henr4 | January 16, 2011 11:36 PM
Not all Jewish groups.
Rabbi Shmuley Boteach and Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz state that Palin had every right to use the term "blood libel" to defend herself after an avalanche of media assaults.
And media assaults it was. Immediately the Sun ran an article using Palin's name and one can only read the comments to see how this stirred up people more than talk radio.

Andrew - The "hollow ears" you mention must refer to the space between the ears of anyone stupid enough to support someone as stupid as Sarah Palin has proven (by what she excretes from her own mouth) to be. With the recent threat to run for president in 2012 by Sharron Angle, the race to prove who is the most ignorant Right-winger in America (after Louie Gohmert {R-Uranus} of course) is, with the inclusion of Michele Bachmann, now a three way race.
Posted by: Robert Littel | February 1, 2011 10:38 PM
Wow Littel you can't even manage to criticize easy targets like Palin & Angle without using the same kind of inflammatory rhetoric they use. You actually sound every bit as bad as they do.
Posted by: Anonymous | February 2, 2011 12:12 AM
(Clay) Anonymous - It is amusing that you can give such people as Palin, Angle, Bachmann and the ever in-eloquent Louie Gohmert (R-Uranus), any credit at all for the rubbish that issues from them every time they open their brain disconnected mouths. My lowly opinion of them is only exceeded by the loathing disdain I feel for people so cluelessly stupid that they actually believe and support these stupid brainless twits, earning them names that even this fair forum would refuse to print. Ignorance and stupidity must be identified for what it is, and those who perpetuate it, for what they are. You have been so kind as to show yourself to belong to that august group of the truly clueless, and like all deluded fools, proud of your surrender to the inculcation of an array of absurdities, both religious and political.
Posted by: Robert Littel | February 4, 2011 9:02 PM
Littel once again you let your stereotyping bias cloud your reasoning skills. I give them no credit for anything. I was simply amazed that someone who mentions rational mind, reason & logic as much as you couldn’t even make a one against such an easy mark. Ignorance and stupidity run rampant through out your post. A logical, reasonable rational mind would have no trouble showing those type of extreme political ideas up for the rubbish they are. Instead you use the same tactics they use in an attempt to outshout them and in the process show you really are no better.
Posted by: Anonymous | February 7, 2011 2:21 PM
(Clay) Anonymous - It is not necessary to provide you with the rationale for why these characters, currently all practising self political suicide every time they open their mouths, and to go through the exercise in your attempt to cause me to waste my time jumping through any hoop you might choose to hold. I could write out volumes for each of them that would prove that they are what they are, brainless opportunistic twits, but what would be the point, as all of that information is already public knowledge. You might as well ask me to prove Clay is a brainless delusional automaton, which he has already shown to be fact.
When it comes to reasoning skills, I would be far more worried if were in your shoes and had to justify your beliefs in your mind, a prospect you seem to have never addressed, or even attempted.
Posted by: Robert Littel | February 7, 2011 7:04 PM
Littel you are correct you have no duty to provide any rationale for what’s wrong with such individuals political views or agenda, just as I have no duty to prove God to your satisfaction. I find it rather ironic that your ideas never require any proof yet you demand opposing ones be proven beyond any doubt. Somewhat hypocritical don’t you think. My reasoning for the comment was your claims to be a rational thinker using logic and reason. Statements like you are making are irrational, emotional and devoid of logic which brings your claim into serious question. I don’t believe you’ve ever made an argument based solely on logic and reason in all the time I’ve been here.
The only apparent fact is you lack the ability to make a logical rational argument and resort to insults and ridicule in a desperate attempt to bully or annoy those who disagree with you into submission. Really no different then the right wing extremists you attack. Not surprising considering you are a left wing extremist. All you are is the other extreme trying to outshout them. Your opinions merit no serious consideration as they reflect the same intolerance and distain as does Palin, Angle and the like.
