Reid challenger cites 'calling' from God

Republican Sharron Angle says her campaign to unseat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in Nevada is "a calling" from God and that her faith is helping her endure a fiercely competitive race in which Democrats have depicted her as a conservative extremist, the Associated Press reports.

"When you have God in your life ... he directs your path," Angle told the Christian Broadcasting Network in an interview posted on its website Wednesday.

Asked why she entered the race, Angle said "the reason is a calling."

"When God calls you he also equips you and He doesn't just say, 'Well today you're going to run against Harry Reid,'" the tea party favorite said.

In the Bible "Moses has his preparatory time. Paul had his preparatory time. Even Jesus had his preparatory time," the former legislator said, citing her years in public office as her preparation for the race.

"God knew all of this in advance," Angle added. "I don't know what's coming up tomorrow but I do know that He is there. He saw it and that He has provided a way of escape and a way for me to endure."

In a wide-ranging interview, Angle said her media appearances are guided by the need to raise money for her campaign and she defended an overhaul of her campaign website in which many of her earlier positions on Social Security and other issues were rewritten, condensed or deleted.

Angle, a Southern Baptist, has called herself a faith-based politician who prays daily. Among her positions, she opposes abortion in all circumstances, including rape and incest.

Since her come-from-behind victory in the June 8 primary, Angle has appeared largely on conservative media outlets. She said her public schedule is being driven by the need to raise money and she gets the best return for her time on conservative programs, which drive up donations.

"The whole point of an interview is to ... earn something with it and I'm not going to earn anything from people who are there to badger me and use my words to batter me with," she said.

In mainstream media outlets "there's no earnings for me there," she added.

Asked about the retooling of her website, she said she was advised by consultants to condense the long-running text on her site. Reid's campaign later posted the website's original language.

"I am pretty wordy," Angle said. "We're still working on those precise statements."

She sounds certifiably crazy. Let's just hope that the Nevada electorate are saner than she is. Those of you who are into such can pray this is the case.

It's better that way BankStreet. More loonies from the Republicans mean more votes for Democrats. God bless her and God bless her situation.

Yoy say this woman is a loonie because of what she feels about God's calling and then you say yeah more votes for the Democrats and then you say God bless her and her situation? You are a phony, and you can try to talk your way out of it any way you want. I thank God there are more people on here than about 5 who cut down Christians and say the same things over and over. It is boring. And now they play ads when you leave a message?

Clay,

From what I have read about this woman, beyond what I see here, she is as close to being a lunatic as one can be and still be allowed to walk the streets. It's not her Christianity I find scary (lord knows, I've voted for a lot of Christians in my almost forty years as a voter ....) -- its her wacked-out policy positions that she wraps in Chritian piety.

I agree with Dana that with each such candidate the Republicans nominate in the primaries, the Democrats stand a better chance of winning the general election.

Clay - Dana's comment is based on her extreme right positions not her faith. How is calling someone a phony a Christian act?. Even if you were correct, and I don't believe you are, didn't Christ call on us to love everyone even those who persecute us? Wasn't his last act on the cross to ask God to forgive the very people who cruified him? Aren't you a bit concerned that Angle is comparing her preparation time to that of Moses, Paul and Christ? From a purely political perspective Dana and Bankstreet are correct. The more extreme to the right Republican candidates are the less likely they will get enough moderate votes to take any seat from the Democrats.

Sharron Angle is a certifiable nut case and if she wins in November, it will be proof positive that representative democracy has failed, again. Her absolutist religion and her absolutist politics both disqualify her from serious consideration. It does not surprise me in the least that idiot boy Clay, has come to her defense, he is cut from the same piece of dried sludge.

Besides...polticians who hear voices amke me very nervous.

No surprise that Bobbie Littel simply can't refute why Angle is a bad choice and instead launches into a tirade of insults and ridicule. I guess only candidates which meet his approval winning represent representative democracy. You're every bit as scary as Clay and every bit the idiot as well.

Clay,

I'd like to think that your own views on abortion are a bit more moderate than those of Ms Angle -- that you would allow an abortion for your (perhaps theoretical) daughter or wife, should she be the victim of rape.

(Fake), or Abstenonymous, or whomever you are gutlessly hiding under the Anonymous label - What do you want? If it looks like it, smells like it and tastes like it, would you step into it too. Sharron Angle is a jack@$$ of the first magnitude and if you can't see that, then my opinion of you being the same way, has validity. SHE is a walking and talking insult to intelligence and a measure of how gullible the electorate actually has become.

Clay, great Christian women tend to be characterized by humility and a fervent desire to do God's will. Think of Theresa of Avila or Joan of Arc. Ms. Angle is a politician, nothing more.

No, I am opposed to abortion even in cases of rape. The person being killed didnt choose to be created that way and they dont deserve to die. If this lady feels she is being called by God to do what she does, I dont automatically reject her because she brings God into politics. How could a Christian not bring God into politics? I look at her as a Christian sister of mine. People who arent believers and who dont want politicians messing with gay rights or whatever see her as a right wing nut because she doesnt support their left wing ideology. And then to say God bless her is phony. If someone truly cares about God, then they wont reject her as a Christian sister. I thank God for politicians like Sharron Angle, and I mean it.

Clay,

I wonder how your (theoretical?) wife and daughter would share your comfort with allowing them to carry a child born or rape or incest full term.

I am always amused when folk describe the campaign for marriage equality as "left-wing." I'd think you family-values types would be our biggest champions as we seek to embrace this most conservative of institutions, which fosters monogamy, committment, and stability for children. But then again, it *does* signify change and evolution (which are anathama to the troglodyte party). And then there's the "ick factor."

On a related point, I wonder if you would support the ballot initiative being proposed in California (petions are currently be circulated to place it on the November ballot) that would ban divorce. Totally and absolutely. After all, marriage is a "sacred institution," and Scripture is a *lot* more clear on this issue than it is on anything dealing with same-sex marriage. You ready to go there? What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander, no?

Obviously the wife or daughter wouldnt like the experience. Christ said except in cases of sexual immorality, he who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery. So it wouldnt be adultery in cases of sexual immorality but that doesnt say that He approves of divorce. We are expected to try to work through things. However, since He does say that divorcing someone in the case of sexual immorality and then marrying again isnt adultery, I cant say that the government shouldnt allow divorce. In cases of violence against a spouse, I would certainly say that the couple should more than likely be seperated from one another, at least physically. You cannot get better by getting God out of government. It only gets worse. Thanks.

Clay,

So your (theoretecial) wife/daughter/mother "wouldn't like the experience"? What experience?

- Being raped?
- Terminating the resulting pregnancy?
- Carrying the pregnancy full term?

I take it, from your earlier statements, that your wife/daughter/mother would have no say in how the matter was resolved.

Must be nice to be in charge.

If a woman wants to have an abortion bad enough, there certainly wouldnt be much I could do about it. Have a good one.

Once again you bring homosexuality into a discussion where it had not been an issue Clay. You can't get gay people out of your head.

You'll have to explain to me, Clay, how it is phony to say “God bless her,” in reference to someone who is mentally ill. I don't reject her as a Christian sister at all Clay. I reject her politics and I reject her comparison of her simple self to Moses.

I also reject your portrayal of me as a phony. If you've read these blogs for any length of time or if you have googled my name then you know that I have been an evangelical gay catholic. And that's why you call me names Clay. You don't like Catholics and you don't like gay people.

Christian women (and men) do God's work and continually pray, as Joan of Arc did of God's will: “If I am not, may God put me there; and if I am, may God so keep me.”

They are not haughty and puffed up with pride.

Dana, there is nothing wrong with comparing what we do to a biblical figure, as long as we dont say we are exactly like them etc. We try to be like Christ all the time, even though we didnt do what He did of course. There is nothing wrong with bringing these things into politics. Its seems that you are afraid of people like her being anti gay. I dont hate gays or Catholics, but I am not afraid to tell it like it is. There is a bumper sticker that reads, "you cant be pro abortion and be Catholic." If you saw one that read, "you cant be pro homosexual and be Catholic," it wouldnt be any less true. What these things are saying is that we shouldnt embrace a sin and then act as though the church approves of it. It doesnt. Yes, we are all sinners, but we cant pretend that our sins are ok when they arent. As your reference to Joan of Arc says, may God put you and keep you where He wants you to be. That just might not be where you are now. What I want to do is to help you realize it, even though I wonder if it will do any good. And yes, I am not always where God wants me to be either.

Clay,

Here's another bumpersticker for you:

"Don't Like Gay Marriage? Don't Have One."

I don't know why you would say “Its seems that you are afraid of people like her being anti gay,” when I never mentioned anything about her stance on LGBT issues. You are the only one who has brought it up. As far as your bumper sticker theology goes Catholic teaching on the sanctity of life goes far beyond the bumper sticker. The catechism teaches that “formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense.” Most Catholics would hope their brothers and sisters would be pro-life. That said, being “pro-choice” is not a sin. Only direct action is sinful. Similarly you do not understand the teachings of the church on issues of human sexuality. The Catechism directs that gay people “should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection.” A good goal for all of us.

I couldn't imagine a Catholic bumper sticker like the one you imagine. We just don't fill ourselves up with hateful thoughts like that.

If the church doesnt want people to be homosexual then it cant be a hateful thought. Not that I am expecting to see it on a bumper anytime soon. Thanks.

It's also possible to have nice Christian bumper stickers without offending anyone. Perhaps not, though, if your religion requires you to offend others.

O.k. the last two weren't Christian, but they were cute.

Clay,

The church "not wanting people to be homosexual" would be like the church not wanting people to be left-handed, have beautiful singing voices, or be lousy at macrame. Your god created a variety of folk. Some of us are Gay.

Dana,

Those sound suspiciously like the witticisms that some churches post on their "marquees."

Well... maybe not those last two...

BankStreet, you're right!

At any rate they don't attempt to offend anyone.

Clay - Your problem is you tell it how you think it is.

Bobbie Littel - I want nothing from you. I gave up long abo that you could simply rebute someone with intelligence and logic. Even someone who whould be as easy to do it to as Ms Angle. Instead you prefer to post bullying name calling personal attacks against anyone who doesn't share your extremist views.

These would make great bumper stickers too. I found them in the current issue of OutLoud.

“If Michelangelo had been straight the Sistine Chapel would have been wallpapered” (Robin Tyler)
“If God had wanted me otherwise He would have created me otherwise” (Goethe)

Dana,

That quotation from Goethe is going on my FaceBook wall tonight. I'll deal with the "god" part some other time...

O my Gay Brothers and Sisters, let's somehow avoid the very tempting conclusion that all straight people have bad taste. They don't. They would not wallpaper the Sistine Chapel. They might realistically , however, make the women look less like East German female shot-putters, and more like entrancing muses. And certainly they would probably have not lavished so much glory on the fabulous physiques of the men.

More's the pity, Mr Fuchs...more's the pity.

BankStreet,

Here's my definition of good taste, on this particular subject. Go to Youtube and Check out: " Vivaldi - Ercole su'l Termodonte (Stains)"

You will be glad you did!

Peter

Peter,

Thanks for the recommendation. I enjoy opera even more than I ever did now. That tenor has a particularly impressive ... voice.

I hate to make hasty generalizations Peter. But the lack of interior design skills among the straight population is a proven scientific fact.

And what's wrong with Butch?

Dear Augustine,

Then how do explain the fine design sense of a straight man like Michael Jackson? I remember watching one of his shopping sprees on TV, where he dropped a cool four hundred thousand in one shop. Giant ceramic elephants, encrusted plaques, pleasing gargoyles, and various lustrous flora in shiny metals. What does straightness consist of if not confidence in one's own taste. De Gustibus.

Peter

Michael Jackson? Straight? Surely you can come up with a better example of straightdom...

I'm thinking Larry the Cable Guy. Or Richard Nixon.

In a spirit of full disclosure, I should point out that I am 100% Gay ... and have the fashion/decorating sense of Larry the Cable Guy. Or Richard Nixon.

Michael's shopping spree was the crass materialism of the Nouveau Riche. His theatrical talents did not extend to other æsthetic sensibilities. A gentleman would never flaunt his wealth or his possessions. It would be bad enough if he would do so in front of his friends and acquaintances, but to do so in front of a camera is a vulgar display indeed.

A well bred man might wear a Patek Philippe or a Vacheron Constantin watch, for instances, with a simple leather band. The only way one would know it was not a Timex would be to be close enough to hold hands. A crass pretender, though, wears a Rolex President and makes a point of checking the time often with no reason. Gentlemen are always among equals because they never set themselves above another. And in practice this means to have the courtesy of never permitting a visible difference in wealth or status.

I learned this from my parents. Sorry for the drift.

My husband really fancied a Max Bill designed watch, but we kept on getting outbid on ebay. Then I found a watch that looks a lot like the Max Bill watch, and we bought it for much less money. it is a limited edition watch made for the Soviet Navy. It is great looking and fills his more severe design hankerings. Proving again there is always a fine, less expensive option.

Dana, there is no such thing as topic drift.

Woke up this mornin' turned on my TV set
There in livin' color was somethin' I can't forget
This man was preachin' at me.. yeah.. layin' on the charm
Asking me for 20 with 10,000 on his arm

He wore designer clothing and a big smile on his face
Selling me salvation while they sang Amazing Grace
Asking me for money when he had all the signs of weath
Almost wrote a check out.. yeah.. but then I asked myself…

Would He wear a pinky ring, would He drive a fancy car
Would His wife wear furs and diamonds, would His dressing room have a star
If he came back tomorrow there's something I'd like to know
Would Jesus wear a rolex on His television show

Would Jesus be political if he came back to earth
Have his second home in Palm Springs.. yeah.. but try to hide his worth
Take money from those poor folks when He comes back again
And admit He's talked to all those preachers who said they'd been-a talking to Him

Would He wear a pinky ring, would He drive a fancy car
Would His wife wear furs and diamonds, would His dressing room have a star
If he came back tomorrow there's something I'd like to know
Could ya tell me - Would Jesus wear a rolex
Would Jesus wear a rolex
Would Jesus wear a rolex on His television show
Would Jesus wear a rolex on His television show

just what we need another religious head-case in office.
