Guest post: An opportunity for peace

Shaukat Malik is a Muslim-American Certified Public Accountant from Potomac. A native of Pakistan, he arrived in the United States in 1980.

The flotilla incident is an unfortunate accident born out of Israel’s need to maintain its naval blockade of Gaza and the activists' objective of breaking Israel’s blockade. Instead of abseiling from helicopters onto the lead ship, which resulted in the loss of innocent lives, Israeli patrol boats could have escorted the flotilla to port.

Hamas’s non-recognition of Israel and demanding the return of Palestinians to a pre-1967 Jerusalem is undiluted rhetoric and must be treated as such. Declaring Hamas as terrorists, naval blockades and tit-for-tat bombings have not yielded any positive results. They have effectively derailed the peace process. Gaza has essentially become an internment camp.
Blockades leave unhappy memories. We should not forget the British blockade of Palestine in 1945 that forced flotillas carrying Jewish immigrants from Europe to turn back.

We must remember that Hamas won the 2006 elections in Palestine. Hamas won 76 of the 132 parliamentary seats, giving the party the right to form the next cabinet under the Palestinian Authority's president, Mahmoud Abbas, the leader of Fatah. A reason for their victory was the corruption of the Fatah government.

In today’s unsettled world, beset by recession and America’s economy destroyed by Wall Street robbers and the BP oil spill, it is extremely important for Israel to take the lead in peace efforts. A peaceful Middle East is extremely important for winning America’s war on terror. Terrorist recruiters are celebrating the flotilla incident.

Islamic parties, when forced to face reality, will change. This is confirmed by the ruling AKP Islamic party in Turkey, which has today transformed the nation into a benchmark for a functioning democracy in the Muslim world.

We cannot rule out a similar outcome with Hamas and Fatah wings of Palestine if they are allowed to form a government and are put through the rigors of meeting the needs of Palestinians in a democratic set up.

Israel can redeem itself from the flotilla fiasco by engaging Hamas and Fatah for a concerted and honest peace effort in the Middle East. America’s envoy to the Middle East, George J. Mitchell, can play an important role in this effort. Hamas and Fatah must mend fences between them if they seriously want the peace process to move forward. The U.S. Congress must openly support the Obama administration in this effort by confirming such an effort through a resolution that celebrates a two-state solution.

As children of Abraham, the Israelis and Palestinians are connected by religion, history and geography, and the present situation demands that we must move forward and secure a peaceful coexistence between permanent neighbors.

Again Malik is at it from his armchair--Israel must make peace, Hamas after all won elections--O yeah? What kind of election? And what is the world to do--if Islamic nations keep electing terrorists we have to eat meals with the terrorists and negotiate with them in good faith--and what is the reward for that? Terrorists fundamentally have no character or constraints--they don't sign truces they want to keep--they don't abide by the rules of the diplomacy game--they say one thing and do another--does Israel do the same? You betcha! And so you have two parties disinterested in the truth--interested only in intimidation and eternal enmity-- and Malik wants them to come to the table so America will wage a better war on terror. All these wars are nothing more than mirages--war on terror, war on poverty, war on drugs--the war metaphor is used against common folks by the bureaucrats in power--it gives them something noble to do--it justifies their existence--their fat cat salaries--we have to bow and be cowed--our existence threatened constantly--then the bureaucrats and elected officials will suit up and ride on white steeds to save us--the terrorists are at it for attention--it is more fun to kill than to roll over and die in obscurity. The various governments across the world, the failed states--economic zeros-- need enemies--the terrorists are great in that role--the civilians of this world are caught between the so called "good guys" and the bad guys--the war is never ending Malik--don't you see it--it is almost necessary to keep the status quo--and you want peace! Are you nuts? The world wouldn't know what to do with peace! The silence will be deafening--when the thunderbolts stop and the lightning is no more hurled from the violence of humans, the race will be over--we'll be extinct from boredom Malik! The flotilla incident of course was a publicity disaster for Israel--are the terrorists jubilant that the flotilla incident happened? Yes, they are! So what? You don't need a flotilla incident to increase recruitment in the terrorist camps of Pakistan or Iran--the Islamic world simply grows terrorists like strawberries on summer bushes--the word jihad turns young Islamic men on more than the word food or wine or women--because everything is forbidden in Islam--wine--forbidden--women--very screwed up the relationship of Islamic men with women--they'll come up with a hundred different perfectly normal explanations for the way they are with women and tell us that the prophet was a passionate man, had women galore, had machismo and sexual prowess a plenty, he never made women second class, except for Saudi and a few other Islamic nations the status of Islamic women is actually better than that of Western women--blah, blah--but the simple truth is this:Islamic men don't know if they are coming or going when it comes to women--about 50% of the population is second class in the Islamic culture--in the name of modesty the women are stifled--and the men need an outlet in these sexually repressed societies--jihad is a perfect outlet--whether Israel attacks some damn flotilla or not the Islamic young men are ripe for jihad--in fact their libidos are screaming out for release--for an open and free commingling of the two sexes--instead they are to pray 5 times and sublimate nature--they are praying alright--and after prayer--they turn away from Mecca and mutter murder to themselves for the fun of it, for the notoriety, for the perverse power and the twisted gratification of holding people in thrall--if Israel were to be a purrfect pussy, Islam would still have its terrorists--Malik has simple answers to complex problems--Israel negotiates with Hamas--Israel lifts the blockade on Gaza--ah! The birds start to sing in the trees, young men across the Islamic World lay down their arms, they wear white arm bands for peace, they release doves into the air, they sleep with the Israels beside the sea of Galilee, like lions and lambs the two groups lie together and all is well with the world! The recruitment of terrorists in the Islamic world is an internal problem--its engine is not Israel or Israel's intransigence or America's aggressions--its source is the repressed libido of the Islamic male--the abject poverty in the Islamic World, the lack of reform in the Islamic texts and subtexts, the manipulations by the mullahs of Islamic youth for self aggrandizement--if Israel didn't exist, the Islamic men would be waging jihad--these men are educated and are willing to leave their wives and children to martyr themselves--many religious Turks died on the flotilla and what was the reaction of their relatives? Celebrate the martyrs and send more martyrs out--martyrdom--a sexy word in Islam. Come on Malik--you're kidding? The terrorists are not looking for peace and tranquility--terror, drugs and religion are big business in the Islamic world--the prophet is big business--in fact if the prophet never existed the Islamists would have invented him for succor and intimidation--the same story with all religions man. A case of multiple poxes on the world! Israel too--no more than a religious state masquerading as a secular one--the religions will destroy the world if we don't destroy them first.

PLEASE COME UP WITH A LIST OF SUGGESTIONS.
ALL JEWS AND PALESTINIANS AWAIT YOUR COMMAND

I just pray that I live to see the day when Israel and Palestine are just regular countries that anyone can visit and enjoy. This feuding has gone on long enough!!

I think this is an open minded view on the issues at hand, he is no way commanding those nations to bow and accept his ways. This is an opportunity to express opinion, ps very ARTICULATE RAVENSFAN ANON:

The author has pointed out a very important change that is taking place in the American economy. Between the trillions spent on the war on terrorists, Trillions robbed by the Wall Street Robbers, at Goldman Shocks, City-looters, Wells Forgo
Morg-moneyStolen, America is game(AIG),and the two Freddie and Fannie the US taxpayer and eternally optimistic citizen is lost.

Add the BP oil spill and our appetite for Oil price shocks due to oil price hikes precipitated by uncertainty in the Middle East especially with respect to palestine and and Israel/Iran stand-off is very gone.

BP Oil spill could destroy the lives of millions of Americans and in the process any price hike stemming from a middle east conflict could conceivably create unnecessary animosity for America's most important Ally Israel. This is possible , especially if good relations are not reestablished with Turkey and Peace process is not started with the Palestinians.
Invisible hands are quietly busy isolating Israel into a corner and Mr Nothing-to-you is not helping matters with his belligerent and bellicose declarations.

Mr. Michell was successful in Ireland and there is no reason why he cannot succeed in Palestine.

Israel should seize the Flotilla incident to save face for Mr NopeaceYahoo and move forward with negotiations.

The author has written a very balanced article that is indeed a tribute to CPA's generally not known for penning such pieces. CPA's are supposed to be boring individuals who sit silently behind their desks all day.

Israel needs to move away from the victim mentality and that the whole world is out o destroy Israel – this is far from truth. Israel as a mature nation must take responsibility of its actions, and have the boldness to accept its mistake, one such being creating Hamas. Two state is the solution to current crisis, and Israel Government must work to make it happened for their own good.

THERE is a growing realisation among AMERICANS that it is becoming too expensive to reestablish the KINGDOM OF DAVID in terms of blood and treasure although the voices are muffled.READ the bolder and pragmatic ISRAELI press to get a reading
