Lesbian teen sues school district over prom

A lesbian student who wanted to take her girlfriend to her senior prom is asking a federal judge to force her Mississippi school district to reinstate the dance it canceled rather than let the couple attend, the Associated Press reports.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi on Thursday filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Oxford on behalf of 18-year-old Constance McMillen, who said she faced some unhappy classmates after the Itawamba County School District said it wouldn't host the April 2 prom, the AP reports.

"Somebody said, 'Thanks for ruining my senior year.'" McMillen said of her reluctant return Thursday to Itawamba Agricultural High School in Fulton.

The lawsuit seeks a court order for the school to hold the prom. It also asks that McMillen be allowed to escort her girlfriend, who also is a student at the school, and wear the tuxedo.

The district's decision Wednesday came after the ACLU demanded that officials change a policy banning same-sex prom dates because it said it violated students' rights. The ACLU said the district violated McMillen's free expression rights by not letting her wear a tux.

McMillen said she never expected the district to respond the way it did.

"A lot of people said that was going to happen, but I said, they had already spent too much money on the prom" to cancel it, she said.

McMillen said she didn't want to go back to Itawamba County Agricultural High School in Fulton the morning after the decision, but her father told her she needed to face her classmates.

"My daddy told me that I needed to show them that I'm still proud of who I am," McMillen told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "The fact that this will help people later on, that's what's helping me to go on."

The school board statement said it wouldn't host the event "due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events" but didn't mention McMillen. District officials didn't return calls seeking comment Thursday.

At least one supporter has offered to help McMillen and her classmates hold an alternate prom.

New Orleans hotel owner Sean Cummings told The Clarion-Ledger of Jackson he was so disappointed with the school board's decision he offered to transport the students in buses to the city and host a free prom at one of his properties.

"New Orleans, we're a joyful culture and a creative culture here and, if the school doesn't change its mind, we'd be delighted to offer them a prom in New Orleans," he told the newspaper. "Concluding your high school experience should be a joyful one. One shouldn't conclude that experience with all their friends on a negative note."

Not entirely sure why this story is here in "In Good Faith." Other than the transcendant "moral" issue, I see no religion angle. Morals play into lots of jounalistic beats ... crime, business, parenting ... stories from any of those could just as appropriately be part of "In Good Faith." Not every story about sexuality issues is a religion story, just as every teen's struggle with sexuality doesn't necessarily have to collide with religion.

Wow, Mississippi-- way to stay true to stereotypes. I remember a lesbian couple attending my school prom at Atholton High in the early 90s. It was considered no big deal and that was almost 20 years ago.

re-captcha: sad bigots

I think the comments of Ms. McMillen's daddy and the offer of the New Orleans hotel owner show that the loving hand of a just God prevails over hatred and contempt.

Wow, faggs really think they can take over this country. This is just another display of where we have to give a certain group special rights.

BankStreet - Well said. Sorry about GY's bigoted post. It's ashame that we can't be more civil even when we don't agree on something.

GY,

Not sure that going to the Prom with someone you care for rises to a "special right."

Although in your case, it might've been.

So of course she wants to show up in a tuxedo and make a big spectacle of herself. People are uncomfortable around such oddities, hence why they are more likely to opt for a private affair rather than deal with it as a school-sanctioned event. There is nothing wrong with the students wanting to have the ubiquitous prom without controversy.

ravensfan,

Thanks ... but you needn't apologize on anyone else's behalf. The beauty of blogging is that an idiot's posting is its own punishment.

Sounds to me like any "controversy" was generated by the school board, not by the young lady wanting nothing more than to attend the Prom with someone she cared for, wearing a tuxedo ... like half the crowd. Had the event been allowed to proceed... no controversy, no spectacle.

Christians often face unhappy people after doing what God wants. Can non Christians never expect to face unhappy people after doing what God doesnt want?

Clay. Maybe I'm a little slow. What exactly is it that God wants???

BTW. There is no reference to lesbianism in any version of the Bible sweetheart.

Wrong. Homosexuality is condemned in the old as well as new testaments. If it doesnt mention two women I wouldnt take that in any way as acceptance. Many people who are homosexual twist things around so that they end up saying that God isnt really upset with them. Johnny Weir said that he thinks Christ is a woman. Whatever makes you feel good? Not really. A former gay man, now Christian, told me, "it doesnt matter if you are born gay because we all have decisions to make in life and we have to be sure we make the right decisions." He is now saved because he made the right decisions. Thanks.

So sorry Clay. I didn't really want to challenge your hermeneutics. At least not in this venue. I was just asking you what it is that God wants, in the situation at hand.

Does God object to Ms. McMillen wearing a tuxedo?

Does he want her to wear a prom dress?

Would blue jeans, or some other gender non-specific attire please Him?

Clay,

Your friend is, most likely, not "a former Gay man." Much more likely, he is a Gay man who has learned to lie, to you ... and perhaps to himself.

But as long as you are happy facilitating his lie, who am I to intrude on your fantasy? I do, feel great sorrow for this man because of the box (sometimes called a closet) he has decided to crawl into.

I just hope he has not married a woman and/or fathered children in his attempt to give credence to his fiction. Much better he not compound his own pain by causing pain to others.

I dont understand why you are asking these questions when you know (or at least suspect) that God wants her to go to the prom with a guy if she chooses to go to the prom. More importantly, He wants her to know Him. How do we know? He says it in His word about same sex relations and being saved. Thanks.

Dana,

I suspect Clay's God isn't happy that Ms McMillen is a Lesbian. Although, for the life of me, I can't quite figure out how an omnipotent god let her slip by with that one little "flaw." Seems a shame that the young lady now has to incur her creator's displeasure for what seems to have been part of her design from the get-go....

There are former homosexuals who have gotten married and are very happy with kids and all. Its simple. You either obey God or you dont. Anyone who doesnt and talks themselves into thinking it is ok is listening to a lie from the devil. The serpant told Eve when she was tempted by the fruit from the tree that God had told her and Adam not to pick from, "surely you wont die." However, if you are dead from God you cant suffer any more than you will when you leave here.

Clay,

As you may remember, I was married and was (and remain) very happily a father. None of that changed the fact that I was Gay. They are badges of heterosexuality, but they don't in any way indicate a change in one's innate orientation. The overall record of the "ex-gay" movement should not be encouraging to you. The damage it does is incalculable.

Clay and his talking serpents, damn he is an idiot.

FAITH PROFESSOR CLAY ANSWERS CREATION SCIENCE QUESTIONS FROM CHILDREN #4

Timmy: Faith Professor Clay, what is the Sun?

F.P.Clay: A very good question Timmy. The Sun is a divinely created orb of light, created by God when he uttered the words, "LET THERE BE LIGHT" some 6000, or so, years ago.

Timmy: Faith Professor Clay, What is the Moon?

F.P.Clay: The Moon, Timmy, is the back side of the Sun, which is why we see it at night.

Timmy: Faith professor Clay, Sometimes I see the Moon during the daytime and in a different part of the sky, how can this be.

F.P. Clay: Oh Timmy, you have to remember what the Bible says and apply it to the principles of Creation Science. When you see both the Moon and the Sun in the daytime sky, you are seeing the Sun and its reflection. The Earth is surrounded by the Firmament, where God stores the water he used to flood the Earth during the time of Noah. That is why stars twinkle as their light passes through it. The Sun, of course, is below the Firmament, otherwise its heat would be absorbed before it could reach the surface of the Earth, as God intended. When you see the Moon during the day, you are seeing the back side of the Sun reflected off the underside of the Firmament to another part of the curved underside surface, creating the illusion that both exist separate from each other.

Timmy: Thank you Faith Professor Clay, You make everything so easy to understand.

F.P.Clay: Your welcome Timmy. It is so easy to understand everything as long as we focus on the inerrant word of God and apply it in a logical manner to our lives.

Interesting parable Robert, starring the marvelous characters of "Timmy" and "F.P. Clay". I think you could be on to something with that! Maybe a mini-series? Although, is Clay a professor of Christian Science?

Thanks for the morning gig!

If it wasnt coming from God, chances are I wouldnt say it. If it wasnt coming from the devil, chances are some others wouldnt speak up either. Thanks.
