On Valentine's Day, O'Brien to celebrate marriage

To the flower, greeting card and candy industries, Sunday is Valentine's Day. To the Catholic Church, it's World Marriage Day. Archbishop Edwin F. O'Brien plans to mark it with a Mass.

The longest-married couples from each parish in the Archdiocese of Baltimore will be honored at the Mass at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen. A reception will follow in the parish center.

We shouldn't really be 'celebrating' marriage.... the fact is that it is a olden-times construct that just demeans the people in it by making it appear that they are only 'good enough' to have sexual relations with one person their entire lives.

Marriage needs to disappear, it was meant to cement familial alliances 400+ years ago.... it hasn't been necessary for the past 200, at least.
Thankfully, more and more men and women are REFUSING to be trapped in marriages and are realizing that humans are changeable and the person you love one day might be your worst enemy the next.

Abresh,
Perhaps you are a bitter man--what woman tripped you up--or perhaps you want to say something you think is original to stir the pot--for once O'Brien is right--let him celebrate marriage---the institution is alive and well--it is not an anachronism--homosexuals want to marry--every girl wants a companion for life--guys want that too--marriage is not for everyone and it is not a sin to flit or to be single--as long the sex practiced is safe--but marriage too can be fun--and a long marriage like a ripe mango can be sweet and satisfying.
