Church fires suspect had books on atheism, demons

Investigators have seized books on demons and atheism as well as rifles and knives from in a home linked to one of the men charged with setting an east Texas church on fire and suspected in a string of similar blazes, the Associated Press reports.

Jason Robert Bourque, 19, and Daniel George McAllister, 21, were arrested Sunday and charged with a single count of felony arson in the torching of the Dover Baptist Church near Tyler about 90 miles east of Dallas.

Court documents link the suspects to the Feb. 8 Dover Baptist fire and another the same day at the Clear Spring Missionary Baptist Church in nearby Lindale. The churches are among 11 that have burned in Texas this year in suspected arson attacks.

Investigators searching a home Sunday in rural Grand Saline where Bourque's girlfriend and family live discovered paperback books titled "Demon Possession" and "The Atheist's Way," according to an affidavit filed Tuesday by Texas Ranger Sgt. Brent Davis. Also found were four rifles, three knives and a GPS device at the double-wide manufactured home, the affidavit said.

Nevermind that they also found bibles, or that atheists don't believe in demons.

Demos and Atheism are incongruent and very separate beliefs ... one the belief in the supernatural and the other the lack of belief in the supernatural, gods or demons or any other superstitious this or that. My guess is that there are many more murderers, child molesters, druggies, and more all with Christian materials or other religious materials in their homes. In fact, billions are good without god or gods.

News reports also said these two scumbags ATTENDED THE SAME CHURCH. Apparently Matthew Hay Brown is too stupid to understand that ATHEISTS DON'T GO TO CHURCH!!!!!

One of them was also reading Nietsche (as in MAN & SUPERMAN, the "roll model" for the central character in CRIME & PUNISHMENT). These kids were rebelling against religion and parents, is my guess, taking the most radical stance they could. When you tangle with real demons, one of the first things you encounter is the delusion that they don't exist. These guys may need exorcism by now, certainly absolution when they repent, and our ongoing prayers for them and their horrified families. They have committed the mortal sins of Sacrilege & Arson, terrible sins. May the mercy of Christ bring them to sincere and lasting repentance.

The book The Atheist's Way is about living a full, ethical life. Sounds like these boys should have actually read it but didn't.

Anonymous - Apparently you were too stupid to understand what Matthew Hay Brown wrote. He bever said they were Atheist only that books on atheism were found.

Why is every two-bit newspaper in the country trying to manufacture a story out of the fact that those losers had a book on atheism. They were losers, period. Atheism had nothing to do with anything!

US prisons are dominated by Christians, while the percentage of atheists in prison is much lower than their percentage in the general prison. Oh, and before someone posts the inevitable "Hitler was an atheist" Big Lie: NO HE WASN'T. He was a Christian.

Other reports state that Bourque's home contained three Bibles. Why does Matthew Hay Brown not report on that?

So they had a book on atheism. What other irrelevant items were found on the premises? Fried pies? Number two pencils? A toothbrush? Please, report all the trivia.

Or, if you think it is somehow relevant to their crimes that they have a book on atheism, please explain why you think that is the case. So far, you have nothing but innuendo.

I'm a card carrying Atheist, who if I dropped dead tomorrow, would be found to be in possession of an entire library of books on and by religionists. I have them because it is always good to know what the enemy is saying and thinking, but possession of such material does not make me a delusional superstitionist any more than it make two idiots with books on Atheism (and demons) anything more than what they are, stupid.

It's kind of funny seeing atheist get so worked up over a story which merely says some atheist books were found on them. I wonder if they had burned abortion clinics and the police had found bibles how many would be linking them with Christianity. Robert you are now making the very same argument you attacked me for making when discussing the history of religion causing suffering in the world. Does it really matter if they are or aren't atheist? What they did was wrong and the will answer for it under the law.

The old satan is a liar, and he is most effective when he has convinced a victim of his that the supernatural does not exist. He will tell you: there is no God, no satan, no heaven or hell, no after life, no wrong, no right. Yet, in his same sulfuric noxious breath, he will draw such victim to himself in satanism, wiccan, new age, things--some other "god". Satan will not "waste a crisis", the void will be filled with something, and whatever the void is then filled with will take the victim further away from the reality of God.

ravensfan - The article gave the wrong impression, and considering the impressions that most Americans take to heart, there was a need to clarify things before the Clays and pattycakes started calling for a pogrom against us poor heathens. Look how many stupid idiots still believe that Iraq had a hand in the 911 attacks.

Robert - I won't disagree. My point is that had it been abortion clinics getting burned and they found bibles on these guys you'd be the first one using it to attack Christians with it so I don't see any difference except you are on the other side of the fence. I agree completely that there are those who have foolish notions of Iraq’s involvement in 9/11. Just like there are those who still have the foolish notion that Bush stole two elections.

There may have been bibles in the man's house but God wasnt the one whispering to him to burn anything. There are about four people on these blogs who sound awfully unhappy basically because they listen to the same guy who was doing the whispering. God bless.

ravensfan - Not one abortion clinic bombing or torching has happened that wasn't directly tied to a fanatic religionist. There is a difference , you know.

Way to go, Baltimore Sun. Slandering all atheists because a couple of criminals had ONE book related to atheism. Why the hell don't you go through your police blotter and detail how many of those criminals had Bibles in their homes?

You need to rename the column "In BAD Faith". Printing trash like this is irresponsible and biased.

I'll be cancelling my subscription, thank you very much. I won't support such vulgar bias.

rino,
hitler was not a Christian. He may have been raised in it as a child, but HItler was steeped in occultism tinged with eastern mysticism. Even his swastika and concept of an Aryan race were borrowed from the East(India). His belief centered around the Reich which he saw as superior to Christianity. In fact, he forbade Christian baptism for Nazi children. A Nazi naming ceremony took the place of Baptism.

Kennu - When did I say he was a Christian?

Robert - So what your saying is religionists as you call them are the only ones who can commit fanatical acts. The sad part is you actually believe that.

ravensfan - OK, I'll bite. Show us the list of terrorist acts committed in the last twenty years by Atheists.

Robert,
You bit too fast--Ravensfan and Rino will point to the two guys above as supreme examples of Atheists who committed terrorism--they will say they need to look no further than this blog to find their atheist terrorists. They will also fault you for confining yourself to the last 20 years--that won't give them a chance to harp on Stalin--Stalin--Stalin--Mao, Mao, Mao--and you have forgotten the dreaded Castro, who is accused of throwing his foes in prison to this day. And then the members of the KGB, who have been pursuing and killing the Chechens all over the world--and also remember the former KGB guy who got poisoned with radioactivity in England by his current KGB pals? You won't win this one, I am afraid. Anyone can commit fanatical acts but the religionists commit them with greater zeal, with mightier impact, with phenomenal frequency and with such conviction, that religion and fanatical deeds have become synonymous. Look at the head of the Lord's Resistance Army--Uganda--god believer, look at Osama bin Laden--god believer, most of those who burn churches actually come from the churches--they are not atheists, the anti abortion killers are professed Christians, Bush who attacked Iraq on false pretensions--a god believer, Saddam who threw chemical weapons at the Kurds-- a god believer, the Turks who slaughtered the Armenians--god believers, the Israelis who commit targeted killings of the Palestinians--god believers, the Palestinians who throw Katushya Rockets at the Israelis--god believers, and so on and so forth endlessly do the god believers ruin the world with their god belief. Do Atheists do the same--yes, some do--but again, not with the same frequency and effectiveness as the god believers. God seems to bring out the devil in humans.
Ravensfan Anon

Robert - Contrary to what Anon thinks I'm not going to give you any list. for one we've been down that road before and you only rationalized those examples then. However, it was YOU who made the claim "Not one abortion clinic bombing or torching has happened that wasn't directly tied to a fanatic religionist" So using the idea that the person making the positive claim has the burden of proof that would make place that burden on you.

The title of your article intentionally "demonizes" atheists, which is typical for you religious freaks. Atheists make up about 1% of prison poulations. That means that 99% of scum in prison believe in god. Atheists don't believe in demons, or the devil, and we certainly don't go around burning churches. We leave that to the pious "christians".

scooter - The article was from the AP and I seriously doubt there are many religious freaks there. No one knows what the people who did this were and even if they were atheists so what just as all Christians shouldn't be stereotyped based on the actions of a few the same would be true here for atheists.
