Did candidate Obama mislead on his Christian faith?
Did President Barack Obama mislead Christians about his faith during the 2008 presidential campaign?
The question, posed by the Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney of the Christian Defense Coalition, has provoked an interesting exchange. In a release last week, Mahoney said Obama has not gone to church regularly as president, and his family has yet to find a church home in Washington.
"It is important to note that it was President Obama who made his regular church attendance and the importance of a local church community a major part of his campaign,” Mahoney says. “He stated in the national press that he, 'regularly attends church while on the campaign trail.'
"The issue is not whether a President has to attend church on a regular basis to be an effective President. They do not. The issue is one of integrity and honesty. To portray yourself as person of deep Christian faith and very involved in the life of the local church during the campaign and then abandon that position after you are elected reduces faith to a commodity and religion to a political tool.”
Over at Religion Dispatches, the Rev. Candace Chellew-Hodge questions whether the majority of Americans who don’t attend church weekly themselves are likely to care about Obama’s church attendance.
“Being in church doesn't make you any more a Christian than being in a garage makes you a car,” writes Chellew-Hodge, associate pastor of Grace United Church of Christ and founding editor of Whosever: An Online Magazine for GLBT Christians. “Most Americans, I would think, could tell the character of a person's faith by how they live, not where they spend Sunday morning. By that measure, I myself, have some questions about Obama's faith, especially as he backpedals on his promises to the gay and lesbian community, his penchant for bending to Republican pressure, and his commitment to continuing Bush's war in Afghanistan – but his church attendance isn't something I care about.
“The religious right, however, seems obsessed with the church going habits of the current resident and what that says about the depth of his faith, but I don't recall them complaining about George W. Bush's lack of church attendance or the backsliding by Ronald Reagan (because security would be disruptive to service, he said). Instead, these are regarded as ‘Godly men’ by the religious right, mainly because they agreed with the religious right on social issues. As long as the White House occupant is on board with their issues, they can spend Sunday morning doing whatever they please without fear of retribution or complaint - but let a ‘Kenyan-born, secret Muslim’ try it and the concern trolls will always crawl out from under the bridge to lodge spurious complaints.”

Comments
I still find it astounding that anyone gives a crap how/where the President worships his God. Jeez - as long as he runs this country well, leave him alone. His religious beliefs don't play into it.

The issue isnt where Obama spends Sunday morning. The issue is what he said in his campaign and how it differs from what he does.
Posted by: Clay | January 4, 2010 1:28 PM
Obama's faith, or lack of it shouldn't have been an issue for anyone when he was campaigning for election. Likewise it shouldn’t be an issue now. Crafting images to suit various groups of voters is done by most all candidates running for office. How well he sticking to the promises he made is how Americans should be judging him.

Much like the Rhode Island Bishop who told Patrick Kennedy to stop taking communion because of his position on abortion, all too often religious leaders fail to resist the temptation to "play the God card", and label politicians as bad Christians, as a tool to exert political influence.
If we have any sense, we play that card back to them, and ask them why the religious right are so silent on torture, on war, on the death penalty. Are we to presume that Jesus would be "totally cool" with these? Somehow I suspect not.
We might also ask them why they are not leading the charge for universal health care. Jesus was pretty clear about his views on the poor and the sick.
They seem to be accusing Obama of using religion for political gain. I guess they fail to see the irony of this accusation, when they look in the mirror.

As something of a secular hunanist (and a Gay one at that), I was pleased that Candidate Obama came from a Universalist tradition ... and didn't wear his relgiosity on his sleeve. That beiong said, I was saddened that he felt compelled to suck up to the likes of Rick Warren ... but such is the price we demand of our candidates: if they are to be successful, they must pander to the faith-driven, who must have thier litmus test. Because I *was* paying attention during the campaign, though, I am not altogether surprised that this President --- although demonstrably thoughtful and humane -- is not given to public display of faith. We'll leave that to the Pharisees.
Posted by: BankStreet | January 4, 2010 2:15 PM
If Christ says that torture and the death penalty (killing) are wrong, then they are wrong. Remember, if a man like Martin Luther King Jr. was president, we would be more successful as a nation because God would be behind us, even if he didnt know a thing about politics.

I think it is prudent to watch what a man does in addition to what he may say. Kind of a reality check. American Indians call that a straight line connecting the mind the mouth and the heart...integrity.
Obama has shown that what he says on many occasions bears no resemblance to his actions. In other words, he is relativist of the first order...and I'm being nice with that characterization.
Posted by: sam | January 4, 2010 5:31 PM
It confounds me that anyone would not have seen through the Christian facade to begin with.
And Mr. KJ, a person who puts on a persona as a Christian in order to decieve for votes is not a person of integrity...and that makes a great deal of difference when running a country.

OBOMA LIES ALL THE TIME AND WHAT MORE DO YOU EXPECT FROM A PRESIDENT THAT VOTES TO KILL BABIES IN A NATIONAL HEALTH BILL AND APPROVES OF SAME SEX MARRIAGES. GOD HELP US AND THIS COUNTRY. THANK GOD JESUS IS COMING SOON TO SEPARATE THE GOATS FROM THE LAMBS. HOPEFULLY OBOMA WON'T CONTINUE BEING A GOAT IN SPITE OF NOT KNOWING WHAT COUNTRY OR RELIGION HE COMES FROM!

Obama is the most pro-abortion president in the history of our nation, there is nothing Christian about that. I am not surprised and it doesn't change my mind about him if he goes to Church or doesn't go; it makes no difference.

ravensfan said: "Much like the Rhode Island Bishop who told Patrick Kennedy to stop taking communion because of his position on abortion, all too often religious leaders fail to resist the temptation to "play the God card", and label politicians as bad Christians, as a tool to exert political influence."
The Rhode Island bishop instructed Kennedy in private. Kennedy brought this to the public -- two years after the fact -- to play the God card, himself, to the public. He is responsible for the bishop having to clarify what Kennedy misrepresented.
In terms of health care, the bishops are in favor of health care reform, although you'd never know it from the way it is not covered in the mainstream media. However, giving the congress and president carte blanche to do as they please is not the answer. This needs to be done thoughtfully and responsibly, not only for those who need insurance coverage, but for those who could be endangered by the wrong legislation, such as the unborn, the handicapped and our children and grandchildren who will have to pay for our foolishness.

I am astounded at how many people ignore the fact that life is so short and eternity so long. Much as many people would like to dismiss facts, God is still very much in charge and not to be used or abused if they value their salvation. Call me a nut, but don't be a nut. Obama's extreme liberalism was well known before the election and anyone who thought he was in tune with Christian values was very much in denial or had no clue.

If a grown man who is an Ivy league graduate (allegedly) and married with children doesn't know when life begins and insists (3 nay votes on the born alive infant issue) that a crying newborn isn't even a human person unless it's mother and her abortionist believe it is why would we have the audacity to think he is a "religious" person much less a Christian. Case Closed

The irony: this is taking religion and reducing it to a political tool. You would think that if the good reverand was truly concerned about reducing religion to a political tool he would not engage in behavior that, intentionally or not, will have the same effect.

How sad that America is finally waking up to the fact that we have been deceived in so many ways, that is, those who voted Obama in. I personally was not one of them.. At this rate we are not facing anything good happening in the near future.

For one year since him he took the oath of office I have noticed one thing about Obama that is blatantly obvious. He speaks out of both sides of his mouth on EVERYTHING. Whether he goes to church or not is the least of the issues I have with him. I didn't vote for the man and I hope that those who are not blind mice following the Pied Piper anywhere he leads them will see what is going in his administration. And I am sure that many who did vote for him acquiesce with his policies, the USA be damned.

Perhaps Obama has more important things to do than attend Church, like run a country--something Bush should have done.

Wake up America! God is not an uninterested spectator. Our blind country voted for a president who has a voting record for INFANTCIDE, (This means to literally throw a live baby in the garbage) Obama is worse than HITLER!!! Do you not see the ANTI-CHRIST is working thru him!! Pray for your families because our country is going to fall hard and fast. Pray for God's mercy on our poor pathetic country.

It is extremly important when the President of USA tells the World on live TV he is a Christian, He attends Church regularly and that Abortion will not be paid by American Tax payers and then to find out it is all LIES - In other words The President of USA is saying to all Americans your not important I can tell you what ever I want believe it or not you do not matter - The President has bare faced lied to the Nation - Our President is a LIAR
Posted by: Black | January 5, 2010 2:37 AM
If a person lies about his religion and faith practices he is a liar. To compare one president's lies to another does not make the present liar not a liar. If a person lies about such a serious matter as religion and faith they will lie about anything. It does matter. But, how much it matters will have to be God's call.

I'm glad that most of the comments show people being open-minded to the truth!! Thing is, a country is not for one person and their opinion..no matter what, it's always of many people. Individuals affect the whole, though because individuals make up the whole. E pluribus unum (out of many, one)

The relevant point is that Obama lied. He made a show of attending services during the campaign and so led people to believe he was a practicing, devout Christian. As soon as he was innaugerated he threw Jesus overboard. When he spoke at Georgetown he ordered the crucifix to be covered or he would not speak.
As for Candace Hodge's comments it surely does matter if a Christian attends services on Sunday if he is able.
Lastly, the issues of the poor and sick, health care, the death penalty, and "Bush's war' are irrelavent to the issue of Obama's personal integrity in the matter of truthfulness about what is arguably the most important thing in a Christian's life-Worship.
But in regard to those ancillary issues:
1. Jesus took care of the poor himself and directed his disciples to do the same. He never said to pass that duty to the government. He healed the infirm by his own power and gave his disciples power to do the same through prayer and in his Name. Never mentioned a thing about government health care. As a matter of fact he said the poor would always be with us and that we could do nothing (good) without Him.
2. The only comment Jesus made about the death penalty was that Pilate was given that power by God himself. One of the thieves who was crucified with Jesus admitted they (both thieves)desreved their punishment, and Jesus did not disagree.
3. As for "Bush's war": As of 20 JAN 09 it became Obama's war. He has the power to end it immediately. Why has he not done so?
Posted by: Poindexter | January 5, 2010 11:15 AM
Perhaps Obama's church attendance rather soured, after Rev. Jeremiah Wright's sermons attracted scads of attention.

MARY - Considering the way that some of the more bigoted teabagger types have portrayed President Obama in their propaganda posters, I find it interested that someone who is not a supporter would find it a negative point of condemnation that he hasn't participated in your symbolic cannibalistic rituals.
I find it far more comforting that we have a president now, who does not think that some god told him to invade Iraq, like the idiot clown prince that fraudulently preceded him into the White House.

Writing from London.
Well done, Mr. Hay Brown for your blog post. The word ‘misleading’ was a very good choice. Why did Obama go to a church with a congregation of thousands when he was in Chicago? Then go to many ad-hoc churches when he was on the campaign trail? Obamas ‘religious practices’ garnered enormous media attention. Obama was the ‘progressive’ holy Joe.
There are misleaders, but there are also those who are willingly misled. It’s not always easy to judge if a politicians ‘religious practices’ are genuine. But quick viewings of YouTube videos of Obama speeches prior to the election are very revealing. Just look at Obama criticises the Sermon on the Mount. Then on the CNN interview where he lauds the Bible and calls himself a Christian. Hmmm!?
Oh dear, I had better stop before I’m called ‘a right-wing extremist’. That was the offensive stereotype used to gag anyone who dared provoke debate on Obama’s inconsistent religious practices. Going to any church where he could poach voters pre-election, then stopping attending church services altogether. The most glaring example being that the Obama family did not attend a Church service during either Christmas 2008 or 2009.
There are misleaders, but there are also those who are very willingly misled. It’s not always easy to judge if a politicians ‘religious practices’ are genuine, but voters must show more fortitude in questioning politicians’ religious practices: are they genuine? If you don’t, it is your religious practices that are being mocked by a scoffer in disguise. I write this from London, but I would exhort ALL American voters to refuse the name-calling of ‘extemist’, merely because you seek the truth on the religious practices of a man who wants your vote. It is ‘they’ who are censoring your right to free speech with their preppy screeches of ‘but that’s so right wing!’ No the truth does not belong to a ‘wing’. It exists of itself, for itself; ‘seek you the truth and the truth shall set you free.’

When the man asked for a crucifix to be covered before he would give a speech at Georgetown University, what else is neccesary to even be said about this topic?
Posted by: Clay | January 7, 2010 10:25 AM
Clay,
It would be singularly inappropriate for the President of the United States to appear to be speaking with religious authority. Such authority might be communicated, were the President to speak with religious symbols visible behind or above him. This may have been the reason that the White House asked that Georgetown remove or veil the religious imagary that might otherwise have appeared as the President spoke on economic issues. The University, by the way, had no problem acceeding to the White House's request. No great conspiracy here. No great offense to anyone, except to those who will invent conspiracy and offense.

First of all, it says a lot about the difference between how he portrayed himself during the campaign and what he does now. Second, you couldnt be in more trouble by offending anyone than you are by offending God. He is the One saying it is an offense. Thanks.

I assume an omniscient god is familiar with the Constitution and will not take offense at a man doing his job.
As to the President's positioning himself as a religious man during the campaign, please read my earlier posting. I was satisfied then that he was sufficiently secular (albeit regretting the extent to which he had to "talk the talk"). I was certainly tired of having a President who used his purported religion as an excuse for many very unholy deeds.
After all, we were electing a President, not a pastor.

Maybe Obama is afraid he will find another church where the preacher will preach God Dam America, or should i say he can't find one that preaches God Dam America, so he is not comfortable hearing God's true word.

Clay - That doesn't surprise me at all. Absolutist fundy Christians avoid facing criticism of their mindless beliefs by ignoring the outside world all the time. It is the fundamental precept behind the idea that ignorance is bliss, which means people of your mindset must be experiencing never ending explosive orgasms as a normal matter of course.

Some of you may or may not know about young Patrick Kennedy's recent public spat with Providence Bishop Thomas Tobin over Kennedy's pro-choice stance on abortion. Without Ted around to keep him quiet, Patrick is self-imploding, especially on this issue.
It's time for him to go!
His opponent, state rep. John Loughlin (R), is a businessman, an Eagle Scout, a retired Army colonel and PRO-LIFE. John has raised more money than any of Patrick's previous opponents. We finally have a fiscal conservative who has a real shot at unseating Kennedy.
Find out more about John at: www.johnloughlin.org

Also, don't mock God. he's fully aware of the Constitution; I'd argue He inspired the authors in various ways when they wrote it. yet., He's above all law!! Wisdom begins with having respect for the Lord!!

And good citizenship in our secular nation begins with having respect for the Consitution.
Posted by: BankStreet | January 19, 2010 1:24 PM
And the constitution doesnt say that church and state shall be seperated. Our country is successful because of God and our willingness to be obedient to Him. When we go astray, we lose. And that has happened with Republicans as well as Democrats.
Posted by: Clay | January 19, 2010 1:56 PM
Clay - For someone who talks a lot about what God wants are you sure he wants you saying things like that about someone?
Posted by: Anonymous | January 19, 2010 3:43 PM
Clay - Have you actually read the first amendment?
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
It has been interpreted to prohibit the establishment of a national religion or give preference to any religion or religious idea over another where there is no secular purpose. That means Christianity can not be given preference over any other or for that matter no religious beliefs.
We will all be judged based on our faith and not that of the nation or its leaders.
Posted by: ravensfan | January 19, 2010 5:08 PM
What? That both Democrats and Republicans can be sinners and make mistakes and be punished? Why wouldnt God agree with that? Look at what happened with Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton. What gets me is the anything goes attitude of liberals and how they practically dismissed it all as "oh well. If we agree that gays should marry and sex changed people should serve in important Obama positions why worry about a little fooling around on Bill's part?" If one thing is ok, then the next thing is ok. If I go to sin and think "well he did it, I dont see why it is so bad for me to" then I am headed in the wrong direction. Far left people dont even see a similarity. If Bill fools around it is wrong because he hurt his wife but it is ok for me to have gay relations because I am true to my partner and we are both deciding to do this? God sees both as wrong, Democrat or Republican.
Posted by: Clay | January 19, 2010 5:33 PM
Clay – I don’t recall saying they couldn’t sin. What I said is no one except them will have to answer to God for it. God will not punish the innocent for the sins of others. Go back and read Lot’s conversation in Genesis. Clinton’s extramarital affairs are between him, his wife and God. Since you have no way of knowing if he has repented why are you throwing the first stone? I don’t recall reading anything in the Constitution that says homosexuals or people who have had sex changes can’t serve in government. What you seem to have trouble accepting is we are not a Christian nation and never have been. We are a secular nation that was founded predominantly by Christians who intended to keep the two separated based on centuries of seeing what happens when the two are mixed.

Clay - I found this on a website while back.
"It has often been seen on the Internet that to find God in the Constitution, all one has to do is read it, and see how often the Framers used the words "God," or "Creator," "Jesus," or "Lord." Except for one notable instance, however, none of these words ever appears in the Constitution, neither the original nor in any of the Amendments. The notable exception is found in the Signatory section, where the date is written thusly: "Seventeenth Day of September in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty seven". The use of the word "Lord" here is not a religious reference, however. This was a common way of expressing the date, in both religious and secular contexts. This lack of any these words does not mean that the Framers were not spiritual people, any more than the use of the word Lord means that they were. What this lack of these words is expositive of is not a love for or disdain for religion, but the feeling that the new government should not involve itself in matters of religion. In fact, the original Constitution bars any religious test to hold any federal office in the United States."
Posted by: Anonymous | January 20, 2010 12:11 PM
Look again, Clay. The same Eirst Amendment that allows you to exercise your faith excludes it from the civil laws that govern all of us.
Posted by: BankStreet | January 20, 2010 12:12 PM
So if there is no law saying that we must have "In God We Trust" on our money, then it is legal to do so. It sounds encouraging. And of course if we keep it the way it is, we wont be hearing any complaints from the president. He is fine with "God" which could represent Allah. Atheists I suppose can just pretend it is the god of money or whatever. I think our country would be more successful if we put "In Christ We Trust" on the money.
Posted by: Clay | January 20, 2010 12:53 PM
Of course, then, Clay, it wouldn't be *our* country, would it? Yours, perhaps, but not mine.
You do, realize, don't you, that "Allah" is merely Arabic for "God" and is the term Christians use for "God" in Arabic-speaking countries...? But then again, I forget that I am dealing with a person who cannot fathom the notion that a President with a non-Anglo name could possibly be a Christian. A person with a painfully narrow view of his own god's creation.
Posted by: BankStreet | January 20, 2010 1:10 PM
Clay - It gives preference to a religion which makes it unconstitutional. However, unless someone wants to make a legal challenge it will probably remain. Do you honestly think that having God on money is something that would please God or that taking it off would offend Him? The Bible especially the NT really doesn't paint money in a flattering light anyway. It's faith and how we live it not what gets put on money that will please God. Bankstreet is correct "Allah" is Arabic for "God".
Posted by: Anonymous | January 20, 2010 1:45 PM
Remember, when people use "Allah" they are usually referring to God without Christ. God without Christ is impossible. Thanks.
Posted by: Clay | January 20, 2010 3:32 PM
Clay - Arabic-speakers of all Abrahamic faiths, including Christians and Jews, use the word "Allah" to mean "God". I would suspect that all Arabic speaking Christians probably use the name "Allah" instead of then name "God" used by English speking Christians. In German it would be "Gott". I think you are getting hung up on langauge rather than religion.

Dear President Barrack Obama considers, from 9/11 till today, America has conducted many war operations in connection with War on Terror, resulting the circle of war has spread hundred times. Millions innocent persons have died.
In this war. Many More have been rendered homeless. One Lak (10000) war affected youth joined the army of Al-Qaida and Talban by the help of anti American countries have begun gorilla war in a horrible manner. It is the result of wrong war strategy. In the end Talban by their will handover, their Weapons to Pakistan Gov, they will come to Table Talk and Suicide Bombing will come to an end in Pakistan. Through this War Strategy Pakistani and American Gov can save expenses on war. Through this planning American and Pakistani Gov can utilize their saving on war budgets for development of Schools, Hospitals, Colonies, Markets, Industry, Roads, Bridges, Dams, Canals of Swat and Tribal Areas of NWFP that are war affected.
Due to wrong war strategies of the American and NATO forces.
The war on terror is getting worst mainly due to use of air craft, tanks, Cannons.
Because nine innocent people are killed for a single terrorist this way in these circumstances thousands
of innocent people lose their life or properties and any other source of income.
In the result many people join terrorist or become suicide bomber. As they think there is no other way to take revenge of the innocents killing of their relatives these are the basic reasons that hundreds of suicides are generated very quickly and easily in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq particularly who further kill thousands of other innocent public.
On account of present war strategy, Billion Dollars are being wasted yearly.
This war can cause Fall of America instead of continuation of war; my best suggestion for America must keep his Supper Power on the World and should conquer the World instead of war, but by his No-1 scientific technology spending on agriculture, industry, trade, education, scientific development and tourism, all round the World.
